So my singing voice is alright. I can harmonize like a motherfucker but on my own I’m just like. Okay.
This one day, years ago, I was at work in retail, it was a slow day without customers. I had a coworker, M, who was extremely temperamental, but a wonderful performer. Her voice was angelic. She’d do a ton of open mics with her guitar, and rooms would fall silent to hear her.
A different coworker, A, asked me what I was getting my partner for the holidays. “Oh,” I said, “I want to get him a shirt with Marceline from Adventure Time with some song lyrics!”
“What’s the song?”
At this moment, I rolled the only nat 20 I’ll ever be granted for singing, and I sang the first two lines. It’s a dumb song by a cartoon vampire. But it sounded. So. Good.
And when I looked up three of my coworkers were staring at me, jaws dropped. One of them was M, who looked absolutely furious. I made an enemy with those two lines, upstaging her at the thing she was supposed to be best at.
Fully convinced the universe used me to punish that girl for some reason. She never forgave me for having that one beautiful moment of singing, and I’ll never be able to replicate it.

One thing I wish I'd see more of among Ratio fans is some thought about how he views himself as a teacher.
Like yes, of course he refuses to compromise on the quality and rigor of the education he imparts, and he would find it unforgivably unethical to lower his standards in order to pass more students who had not genuinely learned the material. This is core to his character.
However, as someone who is a teacher IRL, I know the absolutely miserable feeling setting that kind of standard can cause. There's the obvious disheartening sense of disappointment ("Are students these days really not capable of doing the work correctly? Is our future in danger, if this is the highest level of understanding our current generation of students can achieve?"), but even worse than that is the self-doubt.
"Is this somehow my fault? Am I not teaching this material in the right ways for the students to learn? Is there something I could have done differently to get through to these students? Would a better teacher have a higher passing rate?"
We know that Ratio does (or at least did) struggle with feeling inferior to the Genius Society, so I think it is also likely, as much as he absolutely will not budge on his academic standards, that he has doubts about his teaching ability as well.
This is the man who wants to educate the entire world to cure the disease of ignorance, and yet only 3% of his actual students are able to get there. How can someone who gets so few of his direct students to a state of enlightenment hope to enlighten the whole universe? If so few students are successfully learning the material of a given class, doesn't that mean the teacher is doing something wrong?Would a better teacher--would a genius, maybe--not be able to impart their knowledge more efficiently and educate even the most challenging of students?
As someone constantly struggling with that balance between keeping academic standards high while also meeting the needs of today's students, I think the passing rates of his courses must affect Dr. Ratio much more deeply than I've seen fans discuss. I think he would question himself harshly over his class success rates, and I think he must be constantly trying to push himself to become the best teacher he possibly can be.
tl;dr: I hope one day the HSR fandom will stop sleeping on the fact that Ratio is an actual practicing professor who probably has astronomical levels of teacher angst. 😂

Soupymeltymuddy timeywimey nonsense
Tumblr media
So there were some interesting tidbits in Lessons 53+54, but one thing we want to discuss is the whole dilemma around MC's power.
Last time the story focused on MC and their power, it was all the way back in OG Season 2, when their power was literally destabilizing the Three Realms. But that whole matter was solved once MC got the Ring of Light, and for four seasons across two games and innumerable centuries, everything was all dandy again.
But not anymore~! ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ ୭ ˚.⁺⊹ .ᐟ
(spoilers up to NB Lesson 54 below the cut!)
Suddenly, MC is casting spells without incantations, and seemingly without even intending to use magic. Apparently, MC's power is growing, and once again, it's now getting too powerful for us to control. Fortunately, this time, it's not causing massive inexplicable damage to major historical sites of the different realms, but it's still a problem for someone with so much magical power to not have full control over what that magic does.
So, what changed?
Well, we got sent to the past and ended up having to make pacts with the demon brothers all over again in order to get back to our own timeline.
Essentially, MC now has double-pacts with all the brothers.
Tumblr media
We've already been told that time does not act in a linear fashion -- it's soup or mud. Even in the past, the power from the original pacts still existed to a certain extent; MC still had some limited magic and could still use "stay" on the brothers, but it was just more limited because MC didn't have those pacts "yet" in the past. Now that we're back in the present, the power of our second set of pacts with them has presumably traveled forward with us, and it seems we might perhaps be finally seeing the more serious consequences of our little trip to the past.
The question is -- where is the story going with this?
We have the whole situation of Simeon turning into a demon. We spoke before of all the ramifications this would have on the Three Realms. We even got a bit more in these lessons showing Raphael on the verge of a meltdown over it. Simeon's situation alone is a big conflict in the story.
Tumblr media
But so far, that's all an entirely separate matter from MC's growing power. Plus, the teaser trailer for the season seems to have Lucifer saying, "Take my hand, master" and then shows a darkened partial image of Simeon, but Lucifer can't make a pact with Simeon if he becomes a demon, we already have a pact with Lucifer, and if overly powerful pacts are the problem for MC's magic, it wouldn't make sense to make another pact with Simeon next. And then, of course, there's the mysterious titular Nightbringer, whom we haven't seen or heard from in quite a long time now. So...what's going on?
We're unsure of where they're going with this, but Nightbringer did say back in the past that he wanted us to make pacts with all the brothers. So if this sudden increase in MC's power is a result of that, perhaps we'll finally find out what it is that he wanted?

"It's rotten work," Ren says. His tail swishes nervously. He has the demeanor of a sad scolded puppy even though no one's scolding him.
False looks up from where she's placing down mud blocks in accordance to the roads that Ren lined out. Ren's theatre kid behaviour must be kicking in now, because to call her work rotten is dramatic and almost insulting.
"It's not rotten to me. There's stuff I would call rotten work, but this is no where near it."
False places down another block. Ren obediently shuffles out of the way.
"Rotten work is when I'm at a tourney and no one's listening to my strategy so I'm left all alone, but then they use my strategy and we actually win while everyone ignores me. Rotten work is when someone sabotages me and I'm the one left to sweep away the pieces. Rotten work is when someone attacks me on purpose and I'm the one who has to apologise for being mad and pacify everyone else. This?" False pulls out another mud block, "is building. And building is not rotten work."
Ren cautiously observes what False is doing, then also pulls out his mud blocks. He moves a few steps forward so he's placing blocks, but out of her way. "It's still work," he admits. "A lot of work, in fact."
False is nonplussed. "But that's what builders do, don't they? And I am the Minister of Transport."
Ren laughs, but it's a quiet laugh. He pauses like he's hesitating, then he mumbles,
"I'm a lot of work."
Now it's False's turn to pause. Her hands continue with placing the blocks, because that's what she does. Building. Grinding. Helping friends out. So on and so forth.
"It's peculiar work for sure," False says, her tone light. "Picking up your stuff when you spontaneously explode. Bugging you about MCC. Teaching you basic colour theory. You can't get orange from blue, Ren. It sadly doesn't work that way."
Ren chuckles at the jab. "Worth a shot, eh?"
False coughs. "Yeah, like I said, peculiar work. But it's fine. I like doing peculiar work because I'm a peculiar person and you're a peculiar person. But together we are normal. Very normal indeed."
Ren considers it. "What if I don't want to be normal?"
"Then we won't be normal."
"What if I want to be normal?"
"Then we'll be normal. Or at least pretend to be."
Ren laughs. "That doesn't make any sense."
False smiles wryly. "Come on now, Ren, when have I ever made any sense?"
He shoots her a grin. "But you're like the most sensible person in the Neighbourhood!"
False lets the silence hang between them for comedic effect. "... No."
"No?"
"If I were sensible, I would've left the Neighourhood long ago."
"Hey!"
"Just kidding. That's why I'm not sensible. That's why I like not being sensible. Besides, I'm not the one who organised the ministry or planned the roads. You did. You're the one with the vision. I'm just following it."
Ren looks around the paths and his tail wags in excitement. "But you're contributing to the vision! I saw the bits and pieces you added! It looks great, by the way!"
False nonchalantly continues placing. "Yeah, you see, that's part of the peculiar work. You draw up the canvas and I edit in the details. It's like how we did the raceway last time."
"Yeah, but I haven't grinded as hard this time around. Too busy with my permit, my dude."
False giggles. "Would you call getting the beacon permit drawing a short straw?"
"I mean, I was the second to die in Demise, but you won and everything worked out in the end, so I don't mind." A pause. "Also gives me a chance to kill those dastardly withers as revenge for all the times they defeated me."
"Right, it's a lot of work to kill them, never mind farm them."
Ren sighs deeply. "There's definitely a lot going on. Especially those buttons, man."
False glances up. They're both still doing the roads. She watches Ren shift up a step and place down a mud brick slab.
"Yeah, but it'll be worth it. I'll buy your beacons. Actually, you can go do your buttons. You can kill some withers. I'll take care of this."
She can almost hear his apologies— sorry that she's doing the roads that he was supposed to do, sorry that he didn't reply to her messages, sorry that he's the way he is.
(And maybe he picks it up too— the way she actually means "I'll take care of you". He always seems to instinctively know what she means under her contradictory and confusing words. In the same way she instinctively knows what he means.)
Ren softly chuckles. "It's peculiar work."
"It's peculiar work especially if it's me, and especially if it's you—"
False sets down a mud brick slab right next to the one Ren placed. Just one slight push, and the pattern of the bricks align like they'd been inseparable from the get go. The corner of her lips quirk up.
"— but that's why I do it."

There's something at the tip of my tongue about the parallels between Jackie and Wilson and Who We Are
How the narrator of Jackie and Wilson wants to run away with a woman that he's carved out of his imagination based on a brief interaction. How they would try the world, but good god it wasn't for them. So they run away from it into a fantasy world where they live by their own rules.
And then comes the narrator of Who We Are, who dreamt his whole life of finding someone who would hold him like water or like a knife, only to find that running away from the world will only get them so far, since "the hardest part is who we are". And only to find out that the "phantom life" he's fantasized about is actually just that: a phantom. And its absence sharpens like a knife

MCtober 2024 - History of Magic Class
Tumblr media
(I added numbers on the speech bubbles bcs I fucked up the composition... and I may have read only manga lately hence the right to left.. sorry bout that)
Winter loves History of Magic, though, admittedly, she dozed off in the first few classes. Furious with herself for “wasting time” instead of properly studying the subject, she decided to always sit beside Amit—the passionate student—and focus entirely on her own reading, ignoring Professor Binns' droning. And when she’s stuck with certain topics or in need of more enlightenment for things not mentioned in the textbook, she came with a barrage of questions for Professor Binns.
Ominis always grumbles because her endless questions interrupt his well-deserved nap time. The rest of the class roll their eyes at this "QnA sessions". Others are able to blissfully ignore, but a few secretly enjoyed Winter’s mini-interrogation. Anything to make Binns’ lectures a little less of a sleep spell, I guess.

*Disclaimer: Information are taken from multiple Harry Potter Wiki Pages specifically about Ulick Gamp (first British Minister for Magic), International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, and the Leaky Cauldron. I wrote them into a script, run them through Quillbot/Grammarly (bcs I suck at proper English and it’s not my native language), and tweaked a few sentences in chatGPT so they'll sound more like English vocabs & phrases used in 1890.

I imagine Raven becoming a professional musician when she’s older, getting her start writing and performing protest songs against the legacy system (like when she rewrote the Legacy Day song off the cuff in the first book). She diversifies as she grows more comfortable with the spotlight and expressing vulnerability to the public. She sings about her love, her doubts and fears, her friends, her family. It’s very cathartic to be seen and heard, truly listened to, and shown empathy as well as admiration for being sincere and sentimental and silly and, well, human, in front of a huge crowd. Not just the next Evil Queen or the brave Rebel leader. She hones her wit, craftsmanship and patience too, the hobby teaching her the value of time management and disciplined study far more than school, though she’ll never be as organized as Apple. It feels good creating wonderful things through hard work, no magic required. Every Queen has had magic. This is all her own. The more royal responsibilities she takes on over the years, the less free time she has for her music. But she still releases new songs every now and then and enjoys performing when the chance arises.

almost every origin being more fun and compelling to play as a woman but Morrigan only being romanceable by men is so cruel of bioware. how dare. anyway love and light to Rory, I hope he lives the dream (kissing Morrigan)
its sick and twisted fr...
i’m having fun with rory though!! f!brosca is most notable for not being anything like her sister and performing this very masculine role instead, which whether she likes it or not kind of removes her from her gender in others’ eyes and has some really fascinating moments. (brosca origin is really incredible for this. taking a man’s role as well as a warrior caste role in the proving, leske saying hail to the sodding king! regardless of brosca’s gender... crazy. love it.) m!brosca is the more obvious answer for a tough carta dwarf guy and less blatantly has Something Going On, but also on top of that he was primarily raised and educated (insofar as he is educated) by his trained courtesan sister, which has a little sprinkling of fun gender to it in itself. in that he’s like the reverse of that action woman trope whose older brothers taught them how to fight. i’m not sure yet how far i’m pushing that—he still is the rough carta guy—but i think that’s going to be really fun to play off morrigan who in some ways has quite a prescriptive idea of what men are like or at least in her experience finds threatened masculinity easy to target. i don’t think “guy who will offer to do makeup and braid hair without batting an eye at any comments over it” is really a category of guy she’s adapted to especially when it’s not really what you’d guess from looking at him
