The man who walks in is the complete opposite of the vision that has been haunting Charles’ dreams. He’s wearing a muted sweater-vest under a tweed jacket, all of it pressed within an inch of its life. His hair is neat with pomade. But Charles would know that bone structure in his sleep, even if Mr Payne didn’t clock him instantly and falter in his step, all the blood draining from his face.  Charles manages a shaky “All right, mate?”   “Are you quite well today, Mr Payne?” says the head librarian. “You look as though you’ve seen a ghost.”   “I am perfectly well, thank you, Miss Nurse.” Barbara — no, Mr Payne — has recovered; now he steps towards Charles, utterly composed, and extends his hand to shake. “Please call me Edwin.”   “Charles. Charles Rowland. Great to meet you. Properly chuffed, like.” Charles realises he should probably have stopped shaking Edwin’s hand by now. He drops it like it’s scalded him. Edwin’s eyes flick to his hand, then to Charles’ face. Is he…is he looking at Charles’ mouth? Charles is suddenly conscious of how dry his lips are. He really should moisturise, like Crystal keeps telling him. He runs his tongue over the cracks in his bottom lip and Edwin’s gaze narrows and, yep. Definitely looking at his mouth now. Shit.   “I know we aren’t paying you by the hour, Mr Rowland, but you might still hop to it,” says the head librarian testily. “Some of us haven’t got all day.”
