ugh not to have a Hot Take TM but I cannot help but roll my eyes and immediately click off of any fanfic that has to put down the male main character to make the female main character better by comparison.

Especially when in the source material the two are similar/on an even playing field in canon.

What's weird is I usually only see this in the m/f ship fic I read? To my knowledge I have not read any m/m or f/f fic that does this. Not saying it does not exist but that i have not seen it.

And it's one of those things that's like "ok am I just feeling this way bc misogyny or is it actually annoying" and I've decided its just actually annoying. I hate it when fics and even original fiction have to put down one half of a ship or duo or certain main character to boost the other.

And when I say "put down" I usually mean the male character gets treated as not just weaker, but less intelligent, or canon strengths taken away and/or given to the female half of the duo.

Vice versa would also be annoying if I ever read it. But so far, I have not read it vice versa, actually.

Alright long but silly post, going into the reason why the furry versions are the animals they are. A few choices are influenced by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles v.s. Batman, some choices are already associated with the character (Catwoman, Penguin, etc.). Most choices are an uneven mix of visual, symbolic, and behavioral. So some have more thought put into them than others but it's all for fun.

Batman (Bruce Wayne) -Vampire bat

A pretty obvious choice. I think specifically a vampire bat is fitting, they are very stealthy and aware. They come built with the perfect tools for lapping blood and cause little harm (excluding diseases). Just as Batman always comes with what he needs and only causes as much damage as necessary. Bats are also social creatures and thrive in groups, so there is a bit of irony there. Bruce can put on a good face for the public and business but isolates himself and therefore goes against his nature. He craves family but keeps his loved ones at arm's length in fear of losing them.

Joker (John Doe) - Red-banded spitting cobra

This is a choice influenced by the TMNT v.s. Batman. Also haha Lego Batman clown snakes. I chose this because I'm tired of both snakes and clowns being seen as evil. John is already the way he is because both Sarsee and I agree clowns should be silly and whimsical instead of how more modern media portrays them as creepy and scary, which also includes the Joker. Snakes are my favorite animals. So keeping Joker as a cobra represents what we have set out to do with the au in the first place.

In terms of behavior, John acts mostly the opposite of what you would expect. Snakes are mostly solitary and overall not very social. John is a very outgoing person and extraverted, but he's social skills are stunned from both being autistic and his childhood. So not quite fitting in but he enjoys standing out. Though cobras are a more intelligent species of snake. John is very clever but most wouldn't guess that. As the Joker, John relies on the element of surprise and subverting your expectations. As a bonus spitting venom is similar to a clown's flower spraying water.

Two-Face (Harvey Dent) - Puma

A partial TMNT chose. Instead of just a cat, I went with a puma. Pumas are not classified as big cats but are the largest cat in North America. Despite not being a big cat their presence demands respect. Even when you do not see them if you are in their territory you would be wise to be careful. Pumas know how to pick their fights, taking on challenges with strategy and retreating when they know they are outmatched.

I think these things fit Harvey and Two-Face quite well. He may not be as high on the social ladder as say, Bruce, but he is no less of an important figure in his community. You know when he is in the room and you think about him when he isn't there. He is intelligent and strategic. He's never to be underestimated and most fear and or respect him. These things apply as a rogue or as a candidate. These strengths are what put a target on his back and thus becoming Two-Face. I also do not know enough about this but pumas are not as solitary as other cats. Which fit with Harvey's ambivert personality.

Harley Quinn (Harleen Quinzel) - Spotted Hyena

This one is also an obvious one I would think. Spotted hyenas are a matrical species, meaning the females are in charge. Harley as a character I think usually represents feminine strength at least in recent years. Hyenas are very strong, they take what they want and fiercely protect what is theirs. They have a nasty reputation but live in a pretty unforgiving environment. Hyenas actually do hunt and have to protect their prizes from animals like lions. They have good reason to be the way they are.

Harley is a pretty unpleasant person but she has her reasons. Having dealt with a lot throughout her life. Her actions come from a place of pain though ruthless. She is not satisfied with what she does at the end of the day. She knows she has a lot work to do and a lot to figure out. Scary as she is.

Poison Ivy (Pamela Isley)- Orchid mantis

Another animal associated with feminine power. Mantis are fierce and confident, they stand their ground even against other animals much bigger than they are. They are not very fast and can't fly very well, but are a top insect predator. They have no need to chase, just sit and wait until the opportunity to strike comes to them. Of course, they have the reputation of eating the head of their mates, but that's actually common for insects. Still fitting.

Ivy is a powerful person literally and personality-wise. She has incredible control of her environment as long as there are any plants around. She is beautiful and deadly. Anyone who can get close to her is very lucky. She's pretty content keeping to herself and her plants and is laid back when she is comfortable. She takes opportunities when they are presented to her with full force. Best stay on her good side and give her space. She makes a wonderful mantis.

Bane (Antonio Diego) - Grizzly bear

Bears are incredibly strong but it's not just brawn they have brain too. Bane is not just a brute, he knows how to use his strength well and is incredibly strategic. A bear can be a very scary animal but also fun to observe. Some find them cute, and some find them terrifying. Bane also comes off in a similar way, it just depends on what you know about him. He is someone you can have deep and philosophical conversations with but most would be too scared to approach him. Unfortunately, his addiction makes him unpredictable and behave in a way he would not want to. Bane does have a code he follows and will return the respect you give him. Just a bear will respect your space if you know how to behave in their territory.

Catwoman (Selina Kyle) - Domsitic long-hair cat

Yeah, Catwoman is meant to be a cat in person form so, I don't think there is much to explain. She comes and goes as she pleases and does what she wants. She likes to bother those with no interest in her. The whole shebang. Not bad but not good, just her own brand.

Mad Hatter (Jervis Tetch) - Arctic hare

Arctic hares are one of the largest species of hare. They mainly live alone but come together for warmth and mating. I'm still not too sure about this, I haven't found much on this yet but it seems like rabbits are much more territorially and aggressive than hares. Either way, most think Jervis is a rabbit and not a hare, because of his height and demeanor. Hares are often seen as crazy and generally have a wild reputation, and Jervis is pretty demure. This instead comes out as passion for the things he loves. However, if he is pushed too far all of his pent-up emotions and frustrations will come out in an explosive response. Despite his appearance, he's very fit and strong. He has metabolic issues that make it difficult to lose weight so in his efforts to lose it he instead makes himself stronger. A similar effect to powerlifters. I thought specifically an Arctic hare was fitting because of this reason, as an arctic animal it's incredibly important for them to gain weight to survive the harsh weather. Something that others believe including Jervis himself thinks is a weakness actually becomes a strength. He does become more comfortable with himself eventually, but he has a lot of trauma to overcome to fix his own self-image.

Riddler (Edward Nigma) - Domestic rat

Rats are very social and intelligent. Despite media depictions, they keep themselves clean and are very affectionate. Ed is very much an extrovert and hates being alone, though he can be overbearing at times he loves those close to him very much and gives as much as he takes. Rats are great at getting around being able to squeeze into most places and can tread water for a long time (ironically Ed cannot swim). Ed can also squirm his way into anything be it physically or finding information. Rats enjoy causing mischief and are often high-energy, they need a lot of enrichment. Ed is functioning at 100% and crashes to 0% once he's out of energy, he has to keep himself busy and do little evil genius tasks until he's completely exhausted himself.

(I drew these on stream and Marxtheimpish asked to give Ed a cheerio, and Jervis lettuce, Ed is mad he only got one single cheerio.)

Scarecrow (Jonathan Crane) - Milksnake

A pretty biased pick since I mentioned snakes are my favorite animal, and Scarecrow is my favorite rogue but I have a good reason for my choice. First of all, as someone raised in the South, I associate milk snakes (and therefore corn snakes and rat snakes) with the country. They can often be found on farms and are great pest control and that also makes me also associate them with scarecrows. Milksnakes mimic coral snakes to scare away predators. Jonathan does something similar and comes off as scary and intimating but for the sake of his own protection. Snakes really want to be left alone and so does Jonathan. Snakes are often misunderstood and seen as something evil (especially by some religious people), but they are anxious skittish creatures and will stay out of your way. The religious association is another reason I picked a snake. Most people assume the worst in Jonathan because of his appearance and aloof disposition. He's pretty tired of trying to prove them wrong and has convinced himself he can't be anything else. But know this, there is no such thing as an offensive snake there are only defensive snakes.

Music Meister (Darius Chapel) - Golden-breasted starling

This one is mostly a visual choice. Darius is a pretty boy so of course he should be a pretty bird. Starlings are also a songbird and incredible at mimicking sounds. Just as Darius is an incredible singer and has a wide range of expressing himself musically. I think starlings are sometimes seen as pests or nuisance, I've only heard that in passing. If that's true that fits with Darius. Some people find him annoying but he's a very pleasant person.

Polkadot man (Abner Krill) - Spotted newt

Spotted newts are poisonous and their spots and color advertise that. Just as Abner has dangerous spots. This is mainly the reason why I chose a newt for Abner. I think aposematism, when an animal is colorful because it is toxic, is a really cool thing that happens in nature. I couldn't pass up the chance. Newts are also very cute and humble animals so all the more reason.

Mr.Freeze (Viktor Fries) - Polar bear

Of course, Viktor is a polar bear. Polar bears are solitary animals, especially the males. They only need themselves, and can only afford to care for themselves in the environment they live in. Viktor is a very independent person. He's confident in his abilities and can do almost anything by himself. Nora is an arctic fox, I bring this up because arctic foxes often follow polar bears around. So they are a perfect match. Polar bears are very formidable, you do not want to get in Viktor's way. Though he may seem cold, he is a good person with a big heart.

The Penguin (Ozwald Cobblepot) - Emperor penguin

Yeah, penguin. Emperor penguins care very deeply for their families and don't much care for anyone else. They will brave harsh weather and dangerous waters all for the sake of their families. Oz does not like anyone besides his family. He'll go through any extreme he needs to, no questions asked. Just a cranky old man that wants to give his loved ones a good life.

I'm much better at expressing myself visually than verbally so I'm not sure if this was comprehensive enough. I don't feel like I got out what I had in my head properly. So please feel free to ask any questions. Also, most of these facts are from my memory and may be inaccurate, but I did my best to fact-check myself when I was unsure of something. So if I got something wrong please correct me, I love learning more about animals. Otherwise, enjoy this word vomit infodump.

Getting back into HotD for a bit now we have a release date for season 2 and....

I gotta say I really don't understand one thing about the HotD fandom that didn't seem to be as big a thing when the show first came out but is now huge even with people who are pro team black:

Everyone's always refering to Rhaenyra's kids as 'half-breeds' and 'fake valyrians' and Alicent's kids as pure blooded valyrians?? Like Harwin and Alicent have the same amount of Valyrian blood (0)???

Besides whatever weird regressive moral panic everyone seems to be having about Rhaenyra having kids out of wedlock, social rules about bastardry don't change genetics?

Only difference is Rhaenyra took a huge L having them look like Harwin and the Hightowers have weak genetics or something. Jace as a future king would have just as much Valyrian content in his blood as Aegon, and his kids even more Valyrian blood than Aegon's if he had them with Baela, who has more Valyrian blood than Helaena.

I see this thing all the time where people are saying Rhaenyra is destroying house targaryen and weakening her blood line by trying to have her kids inherit but the line actually gets weaker overall if Aegon inherits instead, so really the only problem is that her kids were had out of wedlock and like guys, how is that something we're condemning in 2023?

In the show the religious moral purity argument makes sense sure, bc they're a heavily patriarchal society that undervalues women and doesn't let them inherit except under very strict circumstances, and also that likes to punish and censure women having any of the same freedoms as men (reminder here that Aegon also has bastard children- he just doesn't raise or love them).

This is just something that is so weird to me as the defining reason people give to call Rhaenyra a 'spoiled whore' (?? In 2023??) and support Otto stealing her throne. I like and find characters interesting on both sides (especially Alicent), but at the point the show is at Rhaenyra is both the legal, rightful heir (as decreed by the king) and whatever her faults, a morally superior choice to Aegon if you think about relative ability to rule fairly and with the good of the people in mind.

Anyway rant almost over, but I would be interested to see if anyone could explain to me how Rhaenyra's children are less Targ than Alicent's apart from in appearance (which no one cared about when it was Jon Snow) and why their paternal parentage should even matter to US as the audience when we know for certainty that Rhaenyra's their mother. Even in-universe over half the realm supports Rhae (showing they don't care either).

(Side note: the Velaryons weren't gonna get done dirty at all in the long run either bc Luke and Rhaena's children would have both Velaryon blood and a huge chance to claim more dragons for the Velaryon house with the double dose of Targ blood on top. If they wanted the Velaryon look desperately they could just marry Rhaena's kids to Baela's kids, or to Vaemond's children/grandchildren.)

No hate to people that prefer the greens or anything I just don't understand the flack Rhae and the Strong boys get, especially since even if you don't like Rhae, characterisation-wise Jace and Baela as a ruling team (diplomatic, dragon riders, honorable, intelligent, dutiful, like and respect each other etc.) have the best chance out of the whole crew to successfully unify and rule Westeros in the future.

It just feels like it has to be a sexism thing bc otherwise it doesn't make sense to me 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Bnha 375: A Mess

So guys, our gals are back with some premium drama and let's start talking about it without wasting anymore time:

So finally! After like 30+ chapters of completely and utterly neglecting this battle, Horikoshi finally decided to bring it back into the picture and we're back again at the Okuto Island, which is ofc a beautiful Southern Island, completely isolated by the world where Ochako and Asui vs Toga is talking place.

Let's also ignore the fact that, this is probably the only battle that is not taking place in a symbolic location like Kamino or UA, because ofc those spots are reserved for our Big 3: Bakugo, Deku and Shouto.

Firstly, I hate the fact that Ochako is not a part of the Big 3, like why?

She was given so much importance in the beginning, always helping Deku out, having her own goals etc and now it's all given to Shouto. Not that I have anything against Shouto. I love the Todoroki plotline but sometimes it feels so off to not have a proper female representative in the show who actually does something and be a part of some major event.

That's total disrespect.

Anyways, enough rant. Let's just talk about the chapter for now:

Man, Ochako's going strong with this one. Guess her CQC training is getting better and coming handy. Also, what's up with this misdirection thingy? Is Toga some sort of Ninja whose voice echoes from every direction? Also, 4 people on one villain? Not wise.

Toga intelligence coming into picture. Also, unlike leaks this Wednesday, the real version says 30-40 minutes which is pretty accurate for Toga because we've seen Toga use Ochako and Deku's blood.

I like how Toga didn't took into account that Heroes would make a proper combat strategy only for her. Guess the heroes are not taking chances with this one. But for Toga, this just means that every path she takes will lead to her dead end.

Just like a normal person, she's afraid of dying.

But thing to notice here is the fact that previously Toga never had a strategy in mind. She was just playing around, doing her lovely dovey stuff etc etc.

But hostility and Resignation turned her into a full fledged villain.

I love how great this line is! Toga has turned into a villain now and this needs no more explanation.

She was a normal girl with an abnormal quirk. The society never accepted her and she had to leave home. Wearing a school uniform to camouflage herself with others because the world would be a little less harsher.

She joins the league, and finds someone she cares about the heroes she loves so much took him away...and when she comes back home, she finds all of her stuff thrown away.

She has no family to live or care for. No one that could give her the happiness or validation she seeks. And finally when even Deku and Ochako whom she thought would be a little more understanding does not give her a proper answer, she unleashed her full powered army.

It's ironic how the heroes already did everything in their power to secure victory and are still losing, and how the villains just decided to believe in their friends and just keep on winning making the situation even worse.

I like how this is the first time, Tsu's intelligence backfired on her! Being a proper villain now, Toga also took measures to stop Asui.

Since, Asui is a cool headed and calculative person , it was just as easy to predict that she would go after the veil. But, but, but! It literally backfired on her.

Also, does Asui not know about how quirk copying only works with the people Toga loves? Did Ochako not warn them?

Anyways, so this battle of intelligence just keeps on getting better and we have Asui being attacked by the high ends now.

Lol, classic shonen trope. At least I thought so. I thought it would be a game of Ochako recognising who the real Asui is. Or was Toga planing on killing Ochako pretending to be Tsu?

And then, a miracle happened.

Aren't usually these type of things reserved for heroes? Even Kinoko wonders how worse this situation is gonna get?

And we have, Ochako going for a last ditch effort saying they never had a chat about love like Toga wanted, which I guess was to distract her? She looked pretty serious about it but who knows? She's been thinking about Toga this entire time, afterall. We don't know what's going on in Ochako's mind either.

And Toga replies with how great it would be if we could. Which makes sense. It implies that all hope is already lost. The author is making it look like it.

And woah, we have SAD GIRLS PARADE!

Dayum! This was epic or what!

And finally look, who do we have here going the real battlefield?

I'm not sure if Tsu passed through the portal or not but this was chaotic! Like super duper chaotic!

Also, it reminds me so much of the 1st Paranormal Liberation War with Gigantimachia reaching the main battlefield and the war reaching its final climax. I can't help but think how similar the panelling is.

And with Ochako being here it opens so much possibilities.

You can't help but notice her between all the powerhouses and her being the only normal person-hero here. With her being in the front and centre it feels like she will be the one to turn the tables.

The seemingly normal, chubby little girl from Kansai will the first in destroying the plans of AFO.

Conclusion;

I really liked this chapter. It was a bit rushed with how we got to see this gang after a long time and yet it was just for one chapter. It has some major good points like mind game b/w Tsu and Toga. Villains relying more on nakama power than the heroes. Asui still coming in the clutch, like she's used to and Ochako entering the main battlefield.

Now this was good. This is literally the first time where Ochako is a part of something major. I know, she could be just there to counter sad man's parade but maybe she could contribute to something better.

I would talk about this in my next article.

LIFE OBSERVATIONS ❁❁❁

I see a lot of men crying about women/female nature and how they were manipulated/cheated/ betrayed and then they go to the gym to grow from pain, but they only become colder/ narcissistic/ egotistical and this stupid villain archetype that gets you pretty empty arguing and crying about women's bodycount/ their loose s*x lives/etc... But the stupidest thing is that the highest percentage of humans who consume p*rn, onlyfans, and all that shit are men, WTF?, if you see that this is happening it is mostly because we are allowing it. if men were really picky(mature), if we learned to manage our s*xual energy better, if we became more sensitive to life and less to our egos(minds), if we find something more transcendental than our beliefs/thoughts/feelings, and we become really clear about what we want from life/relationships and know what our real needs are...well, nothing of this would be happening. This whole issue of relationships/dating is something quite psychological and energetic, women are looking for the father figure that they did not have or had but is no longer in their lives in other mens, looking for the father archetype’s in each man (someone economically stable, independent, emotionally intelligent, funny, masculine, strong, wise, attractive, adventurous) and let me tell you that this is called: Divine masculine (the same thing happens with men). Why do men only look for s*x? Because if they unconsciously/instinctively see that a woman has nothing more to contribute/offer to a relationship other than demands and s*x, then they will only look for what gives them pleasure the most, that is s*x, and then they will forget about her / this goes both ways, and this my friends is called “Hookup Culture”. The funny thing is that as long men and women don't find something more transcendental than society, Ego, their minds and themselves... they will only continue to become more perverted, stupid, with shitty mental health’s, making decisions they regret, s*xually dirty /nasty because they don't know anything more transcendental than that. Also i noticed that depressed people are mostly sensitive people who don’t fit in with the superficialities of the society/world and well, traumas, childhood issues and all that too. Another thing, therapy is a very powerful / important but delicate process, so trying to do therapy on your own is like trying to do surgery on your own, because you are treating something very important but delicate that is your mind/mental health. Also therapy can make you really attractive, not the attractiveness of the Ego or Narcissism but genuinely attractiveness, Yes you can do the route of Ego attractiveness, it’s Okay, nothing is stopping you but see how it goes on the long run, it could make you feel very empty and is a really really hard working process, and therapy is a healing process, but you have to know how to go to therapy and this is where people stagnate or do not have good “results”, because many go to therapy just because they want to heal or be treated but they do not know very well what they need/want to heal, so my recommendation is to make a list of things that you want to treat in therapy, because that will open the doors and possibilities of your deep healing. So don't do things like self-diagnose and stuff like that because it's a pretty stupid move for your evolution/process. Another thing, if someone did you wrong or did hurt you your job is take care of yourself, of course you could talk with your friends about the issue and with your therapist, but is not your job destroying the life of that person, actually that is very nasty and it leads nowhere, because starting to destroy/expose the lives of the people who hurt you so that other people practically destroy them, you are committing a horrible crime, you are practically leaving no room for error and growth, which is part of human nature, you are practically using again the tyrannical practices that the Nazis did, yes I know it is painful, but your job is to take care of yourself, heal and move on, not destroy someone else's life, and if you think they should pay, believe me they will pay, Saturn will take care of that, don't worry. 🌿If you wanna see more posts like this, tell me on the comments<3🌿

AI scaling myths

So far, bigger and bigger language models have proven more and more capable. But does the past predict the future?

One popular view is that we should expect the trends that have held so far to continue for many more orders of magnitude, and that it will potentially get us to artificial general intelligence, or AGI.

This view rests on a series of myths and misconceptions. The seeming predictability of scaling is a misunderstanding of what research has shown. Besides, there are signs that LLM developers are already at the limit of high-quality training data. And the industry is seeing strong downward pressure on model size. While we can’t predict exactly how far AI will advance through scaling, we think there’s virtually no chance that scaling alone will lead to AGI. 

Research on scaling laws shows that as we increase model size, training compute, and dataset size, language models get “better”. The improvement is truly striking in its predictability, and holds across many orders of magnitude. This is the main reason why many people believe that scaling will continue for the foreseeable future, with regular releases of larger, more powerful models from leading AI companies.

But this is a complete misinterpretation of scaling laws. What exactly is a “better” model? Scaling laws only quantify the decrease in perplexity, that is, improvement in how well models can predict the next word in a sequence. Of course, perplexity is more or less irrelevant to end users — what matters is “emergent abilities”, that is, models’ tendency to acquire new capabilities as size increases.

Emergence is not governed by any law-like behavior. It is true that so far, increases in scale have brought new capabilities. But there is no empirical regularity that gives us confidence that this will continue indefinitely.

Why might emergence not continue indefinitely? This gets at one of the core debates about LLM capabilities — are they capable of extrapolation or do they only learn tasks represented in the training data? The evidence is incomplete and there is a wide range of reasonable ways to interpret it. But we lean toward the skeptical view. On benchmarks designed to test the efficiency of acquiring skills to solve unseen tasks, LLMs tend to perform poorly. 

If LLMs can’t do much beyond what’s seen in training, at some point, having more data no longer helps because all the tasks that are ever going to be represented in it are already represented. Every traditional machine learning model eventually plateaus; maybe LLMs are no different.

Another barrier to continued scaling is obtaining training data. Companies are already using all the readily available data sources. Can they get more?

This is less likely than it might seem. People sometimes assume that new data sources, such as transcribing all of YouTube, will increase the available data volume by another order of magnitude or two. Indeed, YouTube has a remarkable 150 billion minutes of video. But considering that most of that has little or no usable audio (it is instead music, still images, video game footage, etc.), we end up with an estimate that is much less than the 15 trillion tokens that Llama 3 is already using — and that’s before deduplication and quality filtering of the transcribed YouTube audio, which is likely to knock off at least another order of magnitude.

People often discuss when companies will “run out” of training data. But this is not a meaningful question. There’s always more training data, but getting it will cost more and more. And now that copyright holders have wised up and want to be compensated, the cost might be especially steep. In addition to dollar costs, there could be reputational and regulatory costs because society might push back against data collection practices.

We can be certain that no exponential trend can continue indefinitely. But it can be hard to predict when a tech trend is about to plateau. This is especially so when the growth stops suddenly rather than gradually. The trendline itself contains no clue that it is about to plateau.

Two famous examples are CPU clock speeds in the 2000s and airplane speeds in the 1970s. CPU manufacturers decided that further increases to clock speed were too costly and mostly pointless (since CPU was no longer the bottleneck for overall performance), and simply decided to stop competing on this dimension, which suddenly removed the upward pressure on clock speed. With airplanes, the story is more complex but comes down to the market prioritizing fuel efficiency over speed.

With LLMs, we may have a couple of orders of magnitude of scaling left, or we may already be done. As with CPUs and airplanes, it is ultimately a business decision and fundamentally hard to predict in advance. 

On the research front, the focus has shifted from compiling ever-larger datasets to improving the quality of training data. Careful data cleaning and filtering can allow building equally powerful models with much smaller datasets.

Synthetic data is often suggested as the path to continued scaling. In other words, maybe current models can be used to generate training data for the next generation of models. 

But we think this rests on a misconception — we don’t think developers are using (or can use) synthetic data to increase the volume of training data. This paper has a great list of uses for synthetic data for training, and it’s all about fixing specific gaps and making domain-specific improvements like math, code, or low-resource languages. Similarly, Nvidia’s recent Nemotron 340B model, which is geared at synthetic data generation, targets alignment as the primary use case. There are a few secondary use cases, but replacing current sources of pre-training data is not one of them. In short, it’s unlikely that mindless generation of synthetic training data will have the same effect as having more high-quality human data.

There are cases where synthetic training data has been spectacularly successful, such as AlphaGo, which beat the Go world champion in 2016, and its successors AlphaGo Zero and AlphaZero. These systems learned by playing games against themselves; the latter two did not use any human games as training data. They used a ton of calculation to generate somewhat high-quality games, used those games to train a neural network, which could then generate even higher-quality games when combined with calculation, resulting in an iterative improvement loop. 

Self-play is the quintessential example of “System 2 –> System 1 distillation”, in which a slow and expensive “System 2” process generates training data to train a fast and cheap “System 1” model. This works well for a game like Go which is a completely self-contained environment. Adapting self-play to domains beyond games is a valuable research direction. There are important domains like code generation where this strategy may be valuable. But we certainly can’t expect indefinite self-improvement for more open-ended tasks, say language translation. We should expect domains that admit significant improvement through self-play to be the exception rather than the rule.

Historically, the three axes of scaling — dataset size, model size, and training compute — have progressed in tandem, and this is known to be optimal. But what will happen if one of the axes (high-quality data) becomes a bottleneck? Will the other two axes, model size and training compute, continue to scale?

Based on current market trends, building bigger models does not seem like a wise business move, even if it would unlock new emergent capabilities. That’s because capability is no longer the barrier to adoption. In other words, there are many applications that are possible to build with current LLM capabilities but aren’t being built or adopted due to cost, among other reasons. This is especially true for “agentic” workflows which might invoke LLMs tens or hundreds of times to complete a task, such as code generation.

In the past year, much of the development effort has gone into producing smaller models at a given capability level. Frontier model developers no longer reveal model sizes, so we can’t be sure of this, but we can make educated guesses by using API pricing as a rough proxy for size. GPT-4o costs only 25% as much as GPT-4 does, while being similar or better in capabilities. We see the same pattern with Anthropic and Google. Claude 3 Opus is the most expensive (and presumably biggest) model in the Claude family, but the more recent Claude 3.5 Sonnet is both 5x cheaper and more capable. Similarly, Gemini 1.5 Pro is both cheaper and more capable than Gemini 1.0 Ultra. So with all three developers, the biggest model isn’t the most capable!

Training compute, on the other hand, will probably continue to scale for the time being. Paradoxically, smaller models require more training to reach the same level of performance. So the downward pressure on model size is putting upward pressure on training compute. In effect, developers are trading off training cost and inference cost. The earlier crop of models such as GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 was under-trained in the sense that inference costs over the model’s lifetime are thought to dominate training cost. Ideally, the two should be roughly equal, given that it is always possible to trade off training cost for inference cost and vice versa. In a notable example of this trend, Llama 3 used 20 times as many training FLOPs for the 8 billion parameter model as the original Llama model did at roughly the same size (7 billion).

One sign consistent with the possibility that we won’t see much more capability improvement through scaling is that CEOs have been greatly tamping down AGI expectations. Unfortunately, instead of admitting they were wrong about their naive “AGI in 3 years” predictions, they’ve decided to save face by watering down what they mean by AGI so much that it’s meaningless now. It helped that AGI was never clearly defined to begin with.

Instead of viewing generality as a binary, we can view it as a spectrum. Historically, the amount of effort it takes to get a computer to program a new task has decreased. We can view this as increasing generality. This trend began with the move from special-purpose computers to Turing machines. In this sense, the general-purpose nature of LLMs is not new. 

This is the view we take in the AI Snake Oil book, which has a chapter dedicated to AGI. We conceptualize the history of AI as a punctuated equilibrium, which we call the ladder of generality (which isn’t meant to imply linear progress). Instruction-tuned LLMs are the latest step in the ladder. An unknown number of steps lie ahead before we can reach a level of generality where AI can perform any economically valuable job as effectively as any human (which is one definition of AGI). 

Historically, standing on each step of the ladder, the AI research community has been terrible at predicting how much farther you can go with the current paradigm, what the next step will be, when it will arrive, what new applications it will enable, and what the implications for safety are. That is a trend we think will continue.

A recent essay by Leopold Aschenbrenner made waves due to its claim that “AGI by 2027 is strikingly plausible”. We haven’t tried to give a point-by-point rebuttal here — most of this post was drafted before Aschenbrenner’s essay was released. His arguments for his timeline are entertaining and thought provoking, but fundamentally an exercise in trendline extrapolation. Also, like many AI boosters, he conflates benchmark performance with real-world usefulness.

Many AI researchers have made the skeptical case, including Melanie Mitchell, Yann LeCun, Gary Marcus, Francois Chollet, and Subbarao Kambhampati and others.

I had a funny thought that turned a bit angsty. Let's say Alpha has their kid with them and said kid is just like their Omega parent and it's really obvious to those who know their Omega parent (like Naruto's kid in front of Iruka) and the Alpha just goes "yeah, my mate hit copy/paste with them. That's all them. I'm pretty sure they reproduced asexually like sponge and I'm just here for fun." It's meant as a joke and I feel like, some of the Naruto Omegas would laugh, make a joke ("you think you're fun?"), and move on and some would get very weirdly insecure about it. I feel like Neji specifically (in the au where he has his one kid) would be like "did...do you not like our kid? I tried very hard on on them. Are you mad that they are more like me?" I also feel like some Omegas would be like "are you not feeling valued? Why do you think you're disposable like this?"

Naruto thinks it’s hilarious how strong his genes are! You joke about him hitting copy and paste and he’s like “of course, because our child had to have the best genes!” Until it’s time for you to help your child with their homework, then Naruto is suddenly all, “they learn more like you! They’re basically a carbon copy of you, intelligence wise, they only look like me so I think you should help 😊”

Sasuke doesn’t find it funny, but also doesn’t care. He hns in acknowledgement of what you said but doesn’t say anything back. Uchiha genes are strong and you were both aware of that, he expected his child to look exactly like him (even though he was secretly hoping for a more balanced mix). Tbh, he’s likely too busy figuring out how to deal with a child that can out-brood him and mentally apologizing to Kakashi, to give your joke much thought.  

Shino does get worried when he hears your joke. He knows that his child looks and acts a lot like him, and when you start adding the clan things, like his kikaichu and the glasses and the high collar, suddenly his child looks like a miniature clone of him. Has Shino been leaving you out by accident? Has he been pushing his clan and family traditions so hard that he’s forgotten to incorporate your family traditions? Are you going to love your child less because of him doing that? Will you resent him? Leave them both? He gets a bit lost in his head. He sits his alpha down that evening and apologises formally, promising to always consider what you want in regards to your child a little bit more etc. Words are not his strong point but he feels like he owes you a good apology at the very least. Of course, his alpha is like “baby, please calm down, I’m not going to leave our family because our child wears the same sunglasses as you??”

Shikamaru snorts and makes a comment about how he doesn’t hear you complaining when their child sleeps through the night every night and goes down for a nap with enthusiasm. Then his alpha is like ‘true tho’ and the conversation moves on.

Sai is just like, “humans can’t reproduce asexually?? We had sex, don’t you remember??”. Joke killed instantly.

You are absolutely right about Neji though, he takes it quite personally. It was so hard for him to expand your family, and there’s no way he’s ever going to be able to do it again, so the idea that you might be unsatisfied fills him with equal parts despair and anger. On one hand, he always hears people talk about how much they want a mix of them and their partner running around, and he can understand why you might be disappointed and he’s heartbroken, but on the other hand, his alpha knows what he went through for their pup and for them to disregard that and disrespect their child makes Neji very angry. Neji brings it up passive aggressively the next day and his alpha really has no idea how he reached the conclusion he reached. His alpha tells him how much they love that their child is just like Neji, how they’ll also grow up to show more of them in time. Then they make a mental note never to joke about their similarities again.

Iruka takes the joke in good fun, as he does most things, and his response will depend on who is there with him. If the pup is there, Iruka will turn the joke on them, saying “well, if they’re exactly like me then it means they must love vegetables! We’re only eating vegetables from now on!” He finds their protests very amusing. If the pup isn’t there, he makes a joke about how lucky they are that their pup takes after him, because then there’s a hope that they’ll be able to [insert household chore alpha is bad at] in the future.” Then he side eyes you hard, before laughing at your offended face.

Itachi finds the joke vaguely amusing, and if he’s only around very trusted people. He may even joke back, letting you know that if he did know how to produce children that way, he wouldn’t have needed to get married to you at all. He finds his alphas fake offence even more amusing. Itachi likes having a child that’s just like him because he feels like he can understand them and their needs better. His aim, after all, was to make their childhood happier than his, and if he knows how to make them happy, he feels a lot more relaxed. Although, this sort of joke might be inappropriate if Itachi has only just given birth. He’s a lot more sensitive at that time and might take it as a critique than a joke.

The joke makes Gaara feel a little isolated. Him and his alpha are a team, they made the pup together and they raise the pup together, the pup is literally both of you, so why would you say that? He ends up pointing out all the physical features and behavioural traits that the pup shares with his alpha, no matter how small, and when his alpha just laughs and says “I know, sweetheart, it was just a joke”, that makes him feel better. It was just a joke, he feels relieved and a little embarrassed that he still fails to pick up on these things sometimes.

A Mad Rant About Chase Davenport: A DisneyXD Character That Hasn’t Been On Air Since 2016

If you opened this post you know who he is. You know what Lab Rats is. You know why I’m here and you’re in this shit with me.

I am going to set up one quick thing, though. Disney has Unofficial Rules for how their sitcom casts look and Lab Rats was no exception to those rules. This means Chase’s actor doesn’t exactly represent what we are Told about Chase and his appearance/age. For this analysis we’re not going to look at the screen for what Chase looks like, we’re going to look at the script. The beloved leo-dooley-lab-rats did some looking and calculated that at episode one of Lab Rats, Chase is either 14 or 15. Every character in the show calls Chase small, a runt, wimpy, etc, and it’s worth noting that he’s also the youngest of his siblings. So when I talk about Chase, his self perception, his deal with masculinity, I ask you to not picture Billy Unger but instead imagine a skinny 14/15 year old boy. A little gamer rat of a kid. Cool that’s it let’s go.

Chase’s primary bionic ability is extreme intelligence, from day one of life this kid has had a super computer built into his brain. This extreme intelligence is why he’s granted the position of Team Leader despite being the youngest and smallest. This enhanced intelligence Especially stands out next to Adam, who iirc had his intelligence artificially knocked down by his bionic chip in order to balance out being super strong. So Chase spends the first 14/15 years of his life locked in a basement with nobody but his siblings, Eddie The Wall Menace, and Donald Davenport. Davenport isn’t exactly mature or wise or a good role model or at all suited to raise three children and yet he’s the only caretaker Chase had growing up. Davenport’s emphasis on the importance of intellect above all else, his focus on Chase’s intelligence, his jibes at Adam’s intelligence, and his misogyny (which isn’t very intense but definitely Exists) would and definitely did effect Chase. This isn’t me blaming Davenport for everything or saying Chase is beyond blame, I just think it’s important to recognize that Chase’s developmental years were spent in Donald Davenport’s gamer cave and the only people he ever spoke to were his siblings and a robot that hated him. Speaking of siblings, Bree and Adam mock Chase for being small all the time. Like at least two jokes per episode levels of all the time. Davenport makes the jokes a little less iirc but he definitely still makes them and god knows Eddie makes them. 

And that’s his life for 14 years.

Shock And Awe Chase is actually kind of an asshole in Lab Rats. He’s controlling, he’s got an insane superiority complex, and he demeans and sabotages anyone that he considers competition. Oh my god it’s almost like this kid was raised being called Team Leader and getting bullied by that team for being small and told his only value was his intelligence which isn’t even technically his own intelligence it’s a super computer welded onto his brain oh my god who could’ve imagined he wouldn’t turn out so great woooow. He’s the smartest man alive and he’s got the need to prove it because that’s what matters, right? It doesn’t matter that his big brother throws him across their room and his sister laughs, because Chase is the smartest boy ever. The robot that watches them from the walls calls him weak and a girl but it’s fine he’ll win in the end because he’s Smart. He’s also got that same low level Disney Sitcom misogyny that all the 2000’s and early-to-mid 2010’s Disney shows have. The beloved hairasuntouchedaspartoftheamazon once said:

“Chase has to get over his misogyny. Like it's funny his misogyny is not because he thinks women are less than men in general he just thinks everyone is stupider than him specifically and he's a man so a girl must be dumber than him. He needs to get over that, and it needs to be intellectually. He's aware any given woman on the planet could kick his ass physically. He needs to learn that computer brains can only go so far.”

And that last sentence is what a better show would’ve fixated on for giving Chase an arc and making him grow as a person. He’s put his entire value on his STEM smarts because he’s not only been taught that he’s terrible at every other skill or type of intelligence, he’s also been taught that those other skills and intelligences are unimportant and worthless anyway. He’s barely a teenager and he grew up in a weird as fuck, closed off environment so ideally as he grows up and away from that place he’ll also grow as a person.

Sadly Lab Rats was a Disney channel show so that never happened.

Chase’s flaws are openly discussed but only ever as a joke. There’s never any deep-dive into why the fuck he’s such a fucked up little man or any attempts to grow. It’s just, “Here’s Chase. Freaky little man. Girly. Has nearly killed people when trying to prove to himself and others that he’s worth something. Weird, right? Wimpy. Anyway -” like Bruh. 

For FOUR SEASONS Chase NEVER evolves as a character. like yeah disney sitcoms rarely have character growth but Lab Rats had an actual canonical timeline of events with Supervillains and Plot Developments and CGI, they claimed to be Different from the rest of the disney linup AND YET THE CHARACTERS REMAIN STATIC. Hell when his character gets carried over to the mighty med crossover series (Lab Rats: Elite Force) and he has to deal with Superheroes (the embodiment of “computer brains can’t beat or explain everything”) his mental state never changes. Chase should’ve had breakdowns on bathroom floors. He should’ve gotten his shit wrecked, and his old bones broken so that they could heal into a healthier shape. He should’ve gotten a friend other than his siblings that wouldn’t betray him, that would support him but still call him out for being an asshole, that could show him there’s more to life than calculations. Give him reason to grow and then let him grow.

but chase hasn’t been on the air since 2016 and disney did him dirty when he was on air anyways so fml guess i’ll spend the rest of my days imagining the wacky adventures of chase and his wizard bestie (who is, crucially, a girl that doesn’t excel in computer smarts but is still an intellectual equal) who wingman for each other (badly, but they try)

Has basically lost the ability to trust and care for others other than his family- which is why it’s so difficult for him to socialize and make friends, as well as partake in teamwork- he fears others won’t accept him. Wants to heal his suffering more than anything and return to a happy life that he once knew.

Enjoys opportunities to prove his power and intelligence, and test his mettle, hard work and skill in the face of challenges- which is why he enjoys strategic board games and videogames like Fire Emblem, Battleship, DND, etc. Loves creative activities such as writing and drawing, and creates his own world and character for the DND sessions he, Sundrop and Moondrop have.

Has high expectations and hopes for himself, as well as everyone and everything around him- which is why he gets so bored of certain books, food and other things rather quickly.

Overall, a morally grey character- generally a misguided and traumatized soul with his respectable merits and concerning flaws, but overall a wonderful kid with a kind heart and undying spirit deep down.
