WIP excerpt: “Match is technically also a Luthor”. (( chrono || non-chrono ))
Match slants his eyes back to Luthor, who still just looks indulgently amused and does not seem inclined to correct his . . . whatever Lena is. She called him “Father”, but since Luthor’s also referred to himself as both Superboy’s and his father, that isn’t necessarily trustworthy intel.
Also, if nothing else, Lena clearly doesn’t know his assignment or understand his purpose here any better than he does, so that also implies her to be a poor source of intel.
“Am I her replacement bodyguard?” he asks Luthor skeptically, because admitting he doesn’t know something is better than making a mistake.
Probably.
“Right now, you’re her babysitter,” Luthor replies dryly, then pauses and amends, “Or she’s yours. I’m still unclear on your capacity for long-term independent function, to be honest, and I wouldn’t trust the opinions of the idiots who plagiarized you even if I had bothered to read them. We’ll fit in some independent cognitive tests at some point this week, I suppose.”
“. . . ‘cognitive’ tests,” Match repeats blankly. “Cognitive” is the last thing the Agenda ever cared about testing him on, because he isn’t supposed to be–he isn’t thinking about anything. Obviously.
Physical tests would make sense. Combat assessments, physical readings, DNA scans; that kind of thing.
. . . then again, he supposes Luthor already knows everything that’s in his DNA, doesn’t he.
Assuming the Agenda “plagiarized” him well enough, anyway.
“To start, yes,” Luthor says. “For now, if anything goes wrong, the security system will alert me. Don’t let her eat too much sugar. Or eat too much sugar yourself.”
“. . . I have no idea what ‘too much’ sugar is for either of our metabolisms,” Match says.
“I’m sure you can google something,” Luthor says, giving him a wry look.
“I have no idea what that is either,” Match says. He doesn’t like admitting not knowing things, for obvious reasons, but also there is no possible way that Lex Luthor can’t pronounce “googol” correctly, and also he can’t imagine how a googol would even be relevant to whatever the hell Luthor is saying anyway.
“Hm,” Luthor says, his eyes narrowing slightly. Match does not let his hackles raise. “I should’ve murdered more people in that lab, apparently.”
“Google Search is a web-based service operated by the American multinational corporation Google LLC as the most popular search engine globally and most-visited website in the world,” Lena informs him promptly, ineffectively pulling at his hands again and using her full weight in a entirely fruitless attempt to get him to move. “It has a share of ninety-two percent of the search engine market and its parent company’s current net worth is valued at 1.97 trillion dollars.”
. . . that seems like something that should’ve been covered in his uploads, yes, Match thinks, eyeing her warily. Assuming she’s actually correct, anyway, which–again, she’s been a poor source of intel so far.
. . . is that even normal information for a kindergarten-aged child to have, either way? Especially one who’s not even intelligent enough to realize how futile trying to drag a telekinetic metaweapon twice her size around without any enhancements of her own is? Match has no idea.

Superman (2023) #20
to be honest, I’m now thinking that giving a reformed Lex amnesia is a good way to test his changed morals, seeing how they hold up when he can’t be really be manipulative and scheme.
and it reminds me of another amnesiac Lex story that involved Lena, which was one of her only 3 appearances, until she got brought back in this book, from after she was reverted back to being a baby at the end of the Our Worlds At War event.
this story took place when Lex was President. after he got amnesia he developed an anti-corporate worldview, which is antithetical to his typical worldview, but he maintained his ordinary belief that “power and influence” were “his birthright” and he became jealous of Superman when they ‘first’ met. he also had no filter and actually became even more blatantly egotistical.

Adventures of Superman (1987) #600, published in January 2002
he’s eventually brought out of this state by being confronted with Lena. Clark is dismissive of Lex’s relationship with Lena at this point, so it’s actually Talia Al Ghul’s idea to do that.

Adventures of Superman (1987) #600
that Lex “was never one for diapers and mid-night feedings isn’t true. the first time that Lena was a baby he was typically portrayed as trying to take care of her as much as he could, both enjoying being with her but also wanting her to only be attached to him. he didn’t want to have any competition for her love. he had Lena be cared for by others minimally and had her kept nearby to him during those times.
Lena has so few appearances in her second stint as a baby that we don’t get much of a picture of what Lex’s parenting looked like then.
at the end of this story Lex was angry with Superman over getting his memories back, missing the “freedom” he experienced without them. and it’s interesting to me that this is expressed by Lex both throwing the wig was wearing, which is a representative of the “Alex” identity he lost, and hitting a picture of Lena, who is really who allowed him to be brought back to himself.

I don’t think that Joshua Williamson is necessarily that interested in working with Lex’s characterization from this period. but considering that this was Lena’s very last comic appearance before he brought her back, that he’s now chosen to do a Lex amnesia storyline, and that Lena is the one trying to help Lex regain his memories- I think this story could possibly have some influence on where the storyline goes.

I think it'd be interesting if all of them coexisted and met each other. (though you'd probably have to give Lex Jr the superman backstory or something so that he can survive lexor's destruction)

the more i think about it the more im convinced the way to fix the luthor retcon is just "using the female characters". that's it. we bring in the contessa (say she duped westfield by putting lex luthor's dna in there, somehow, and this is the actual retcon part. it's smaller, and doesn't contradict rots), say that it was some secret plan of hers that never came to fruition. then we get lex being as blindsided by it as kon, and we get the contrast in how he treats baby lena vs how he treats kon (his child vs a failed tool that's nothing to him now). and we can keep the superfam as a found family, with clark, the steels, and the eradicator all reaffirming their love for kon, regardless of whose 0.01% of human dna was used to stabilize him. AND we can keep his eventual bond with lori luthor. best of both worlds!
bam!!! fixed!!! luthor retcon, now with 100% less eugenics, and 100% more of keeping kon's original scifi themes and strong feelings on personhood and conflicted feelings on how he yearns for a family!! that's it babey!!! it could've been that easy!!! the key is just... its the female characters. it's the female characters!!!!

Match won my "who should I write about tomorrow?" poll, so here's some more of "Match is technically also a Luthor". (( chrono || non-chrono ))
“Most people are idiots,” Match says, because that’s an objective, observable fact. Luthor laughs, which is–startling, frankly, and makes Match immediately leery. He doesn’t know what to expect from that.
“Come on!” Lena complains huffily, tugging at his hands again. Match continues not to move, because he cannot think of a single thing that makes less sense than the idea of following her. Just . . . what. What does she even want, exactly?
He really, really doesn’t know what six year-olds are like. He only has a rough idea of her physiological age at all because of his uploads, not because he actually knows a literal single thing about children.
Luthor still just seems amused, though, and clearly the bodyguards aren’t going to interfere, so . . .
What is he even supposed to do here, exactly?
Aside from avoid open combat, apparently.
“Lysaaaaanderrrrr,” Lena whines, which seems like a significant waste of time. The designation is already long enough without her dragging it out even more. She’s also still attempting to drag him, which seems like something she should also have noticed as being a waste of time. “Don’t you wanna come draw with me?”
“No,” Match says, absolutely fucking mystified by both why she’d expect him to want to do that and why she’d want him to want to do it. At least, it seems like that’s what she wants. Lena immediately looks offended.
“Why not?!” she demands indignantly. “You’re the baby, you’re supposed to wanna do what I do!”
. . . that can not be an accurate statement. On so, so many levels.
