what if your doppelgänger wasn’t evil it was just a person. what if your doppelgänger wasn’t trying to replace you it was just trying to learn to be a person and you were the best model it had. what if your doppelgänger looked at you with your eyes and said with your voice that it just wanted to be loved. what then.

"The Two Faces of Superman!"
Superman #137 (1960) by Jerry Siegel
I was skeptical about this story, but I actually got surprisingly invested in the villain- Supermenace.
Goofy name, I know, but he's a "force duplicate" of Superman who landed on Earth and was taken advantage of by criminals, training him to one day kill him. The story is about his birth, life and death, and how he suffered an existential crisis from sheer jealousy from the fact that's he's not truly a real person and that his parents never really loved him. Big recommend.

I think people miss the point that Lex Luthor is not supposed to be a realistic character a lot.

“Get up, mother. This isn’t seemly. You still haven’t told me why you forced a new contest on me.”
“Because I didn’t want to lose you. In the dreams.. I saw the future and I knew I was seeing truly.. I saw a great evil pass over patriarch’s world.. And I saw the Wonder Woman die!”
