I was reading Monster Duke recently, and I noticed Gus didn’t have that large of a role. The fic is great, one of my favorites in the fandom, but I was a bit disappointed by the lack of Gus. I was just wondering why that is?
Honestly we got really caught up in the plot and we forgot about Gus. It's unfortunate because we also love Gus, but we're ADHD dumbasses who tried to bring him back into the story then promptly forgot him again.
We're making up for it, though, our new fic Legends of Gravesfield has Gus front and center and a large part of that is to make up for our egregious oversight. It also focuses on the Gus and Luz friendship which hardly anybody focuses on.
Here's the first chapter, go nuts!

I have a question about Philip and Caleb in The Owl House:
There are statues of the 2 of them in Gravesfield.
Tumblr media
But, according to the story Masha told, they were initially just two orphan boys who stumbled into the town and then got spirited away by a witch. Even in "Hollow Mind", the memory portrait in Belos's mind shows them as just boys when they first met the witch.
Tumblr media
But if they were just boys or teens when they were spirited away, and if they had no family or prior legacy in the town, then even as witch hunters, why would the town build statues of them?
So...did they actually move back and forth between the towns? Did they grow up in both worlds? That would explain why some of the memory portraits later show them much older.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So...Did they move back and forth between worlds during their lifetime - until Philip finally killed Caleb? That would explain how they had enough time to build a legacy strong enough to get statues made of them in the town - and how the "legend" Masha explained had enough time to be spread, so much so that it's still being told in the present. (It would also explain why the statues of them were depicted as adults, although the story mentions them disappearing as "boys".) And if that was the case, what happened during all those years? (Plus, I'd really like to know what those two became famous for in the town, cuz I'm pretty sure it's not for witch-hunting, or for the fact that people know they were the two disappearing boys in the legend.)

Some Owl House headcanons, written by me at 3am (these take place around the timeskip)
The former coven heads are the last to get their sigils removed. When they do, the whole Isles celebrates
Hunter is one of the first people to get his coven sigil removed though
The University of Wild Magic is always chaotic, but when Luz gets there, the chaos increases, and it’s not uncommon for students to hear about the headmaster and the human student exploding something or committing crimes together
Luz’s Titan form was caught by Daily Knee Views and a few other penstagram accounts that update automatically, so there’s very blurry footage. Amity loves it anyway
Hunter’s palisman carving shop is attached to his house, and it becomes one of the spots where the Hexsquad hangs out the most
After Luz is out of college, all the Hexsquad buys a big house together and they live there together
Hunter is often surrounded by a ton of random palismen, he’s like a Disney princess, his friends never stop teasing him about it
Raeda’s wedding is attended by like half the staff and students of the University of Wild Magic, because everyone loves headmaster Eda and wants to see her happy
Hunter carved Waffles a few years after Flapjack died. He sat in front of Flapjack’s gravestone and asked if it was ok if he carved a new palisman, and he knew that Flapjack would be ok with it. He carved Waffles while sitting in front of Flap’s grave, talking to them both as he worked. He talked a lot about his wishes for the future, and his favorite memories
Flapjack and Waffles are honorary siblings
Willow helps Hexside’s flyer derby program
Gus and Willow both help coach the University of Wild Magic’s flyer derby team
Eda’s the coach for the University’s grudgby team, and she has a half-joking sports rivalry with Gus and Willow, who both take this rivalry very seriously
The old light glyph becomes a symbol of resistance and hope throughout the Isles
Luz takes a memory photo of King’s dad for him
The Nocedas are kinda local legends in Gravesfield
Part 2: here

having given it a little time, I will say while I still would have liked one or both of them somehow referenced in the finale, I am actually happy we never saw a flashback of Caleb and Evelyn
I like that they’re folklore, that we’ll never be given a concrete account of their relationship, of how Evelyn first met the brothers, how Caleb ran away with her, how the final confrontation with Caleb and Philip really went down
we get Gravesfield’s ‘old town legend’ account of it, we get Belos’ scratched-out, torn and burned memories, we get Flapjack’s existence and (presumably) the Clawthorne family line, and that’s it
they haunt so many aspects of the narrative and that’s how it will always stay

From The Human Realm Spiderweb thing, the Internet.
Welcome to Historic Gravesfield
Tumblr media
We invite you to come to Gravesfield and visit one of Connecticut’s oldest established townships.
Gravesfield is deeply devoted to preserving our authentic New England heritage, now over 375 years in the making. Heritage tourism is an important component of the community’s identity.
We think you’ll find that the Historic Gravesfield district has many things to offer visitors from an extended weekend getaway to a pleasant day trip. Visitors to Gravesfield can rediscover our nation’s heritage in an authentic, living New England village whose artifact-rich museums, historic homes, shops and places of interest offer experiences for all ages.
Tumblr media
Walking along these quiet streets, with brick-paver sidewalks shaded by mature trees, you’d never know you were just a stone’s throw from busy I-91. The historic district of Old Gravesfield is a little world unto itself.
Tumblr media
One early building is the old Wittebane House on Main Street. Believed to be built in the 1650s, it’s the setting for the historic mystery of the Wittebane Brothers, who both mysteriously disappeared during the 1662 Hartford witchcraft hysteria, the first widespread witch panic in New England history. There is a statue, reputed to be of the Wittebane Brothers, in the town square.
Two separate but equally disturbing incidents triggered the panic: the “diabolical possession” of Hartford resident Ann Cole and the fatal illness suffered by eight-year-old Elizabeth Kelly.  Young Kelly’s damning last words “Goody Ayers chokes me!” were enough to set witch accusations flying.  In all, eight people were formally charged; three, and possibly a fourth, were executed.
The disappearance of the Wittebane Brothers occured at a high point of the witchcraft hysteria.
The legend that is most often cited these days recounts that one brother had got involved with a witch, and had been spirited away by them. In this story, the other brother is reputed to have followed after the witch and his brother, in an attempt to save him.
Whatever the truth of the mysterious disappearance of the brothers, the story has continued to excite interest in the centuries since. The statue being erected by public subscription in 1866, to commemorate the township's involvement in the witch trials.
The fund also opened a new subscription lending library in a building near the church.

I'm not sure if anyone has asked this before, but do you have any headcanon about the brothers? I really like reading your comics and seeing how Caleb is as equally fucked up as Philip xD
Hi! I'm flattered that you enjoyed my comics ✨
I have some headcanons about wittebros. Some of them can be messed up, considering the time period when brothers lived so be careful. I won't be talking about the relationship between Caleb and Evelyn, how Caleb changed his mind about witches, how he decided to live in the Boiling Isles, etc., because I didn't decide or find the answer myself yet (I have a feeling of a plot hole right now tbh). So some of my headcanons that I'm mentioning here take place before Evelyn's appearance.
Their parents were hanged. Mother for "dealing with the devil," i.e., witchcraft, and father for aiding and abetting the witch and hiding her. Then the bodies were thrown out to be devoured by animals. It was decided to banish the brothers from the city, leaving their fate to "God's will" as a sign of mercy (but before doing so, they made them watch their parents being executed, so that they would learn their lesson).
They have hatred for their parents after. "Why did they abandon us, why did they sell their souls to the devil?"
Since they were puritans ("The Idea of the Holy Trinity" - home, church and school), education played a role, so Caleb knew some literacy, could read, write and count. He taught Philip too. However, household chores like sewing and cooking took some time for them to learn (the boys spent more time with their father helping him with his chores).
Brothers tried to survive as best they could, so there was stealing, too (and once Caleb took things from the corpse of a hanged man, "a beautiful doublet, an unworn one, should be nice"). Usually, it has been Caleb as the eldest who ran the outing. In Philip's words that this was wrong, Caleb replied that repentance was their chief savior and that God would absolve them of their sins because God had inflicted enough suffering on them (rather, Caleb was just repeating what he had heard from adults without fully understanding the meaning).
Upon arriving at Gravesfield, Caleb invented the legend that their parents had been murdered by witches and strictly instructed Philip to stick to that legend.
The brothers took refuge in an abandoned house on the outskirts of Gravesfield.
The brothers feared the Inquisition because of their parents' accident and also feared that "witchcraft" had been passed on to them. So as not to fear the reckoning of their parents, Caleb and Philip decided to imitate the witch hunters, and were frequent visitors to church (to fit in).
Caleb learned wood carving for the first time so he could make dishes with it. Carved a sword and sewed a witch costume for him and Philip to practice witch hunting. He also made a few toys for Philip.
Caleb was retraining Philip to write with his right hand, for if one wrote with the left, it could be considered a sign of the devil's presence.
Once Caleb discovered a mole on his lower back that might have been considered the mark of the devil. He was so afraid of anyone seeing it that he cut it out with a knife. He told Philip that he had cut himself at work by accident.
My other headcanons I've shown in my works. There was also a bit in my answers to other questions.
The post turned out to be quite long, so that's it for now✨ Thank you for your question!

I am once again thinking about the nuance and tragedy of the wittebro situation, and especially about the impossible choice Caleb had to make. As a reminder this is what he looked like while he lived in Gravesfield:
Tumblr media
TOH is very deliberate about details, especially in the shortened season three, where each second is precious. We can pretty safely all agree that they want us to know that he was miserable.
But then he meets a witch in the woods. And what happens next is important.
He left. Hit da bricks, as the kids say. But we still don’t know exactly how or why Caleb left. Hopkins’ book and the tale of the brothers Wittebane are our only two sources. And they are not exactly reliable for one important reason. There is only one person who could have been a solid primary source for the legend:
Philip.
And knowing his track record, I don’t think he would be above leaving out key details of the story. So we need to take everything we’ve been told with a large grain of salt.
(Btw I’m not including HM in the stuff we know since we don’t have a painting that shows Caleb leaving. So maybe that in itself hints that Philip wasn’t present for it? Hmm. Food for thought, and I digress).
Anyway. Let’s get back on track.
Did Caleb hit his limit with Gravesfield and casually decide to peace out to the BI to chase his bliss? We don’t know!
Did he do something very uncool and leave while Philip was young and still needed a caretaker? We don’t know!
Was Philip also friends with Evelyn? How long were Caleb and Evelyn “very good friends” before he chose to leave with her? Did they try to convince Philip to leave with them, and did Philip refuse? Did Caleb even tell Philip he was leaving? Did Caleb have to escape to the BI in an emergency because he got caught hanging out with a witch? We don’t know!
But what we DO know is that, in some capacity, Caleb had to choose between Gravesfield and the Boiling Isles.
My siblings in Christ, he had to make SUCH a horrible choice. Either way, there is no winning. One one hand you could stay in Gravesfield and be miserable, but also have comfort that you’ve still got your little brother. Your only family. The person that has leaned on you for so long.
But by staying you won’t ever get to fully be yourself. You won’t ever get to relax and enjoy your blossoming relationship with a fascinating new friend, except in shadows and secret.
Because you come from a community of witch hunters. And your friend is a witch.
You will always be looking over your shoulder and wondering and waiting. Waiting to get caught. Waiting to go on trial and possibly die for your illicit actions.
Either way, Caleb is losing something. Pick the Demon Realm and lose Philip. Pick Gravesfield and lose Evelyn. Pick happiness and lose your only family. Pick your only family and lose your passion.
Happiness or misery. Leave or stay. Live or die.
What a heart-wrenching choice.

What did you think of Season 3 and its episodes? Also, do you think fans who weren't satisfied with Belos, Caleb, or Wittewife being ungrateful? I saw on Twitter that people who are upset are because Philip, Caleb, and Wittewife got more compared to other characters. Also that we didn't need to see a flashback because we already know from the Hollow Mind portraits what happened. Finally, what do you think of the Wittewife interpretations? How do you interpret her?
Get ready, because you’re in for a doozy of a rant, because Season Three was full of mixed feelings for me.
Thanks To Them:
I loved TTT because it felt incredibly suspenseful and horrifying to watch Luz and Hunter search for Philip. The exploration of Hunter’s personality and interests are heartwarming, and I can completely relate to him about wolves. It’s also interesting to see the ways Hunter grows and reacts to his Grimwalker situation and the similarities between him and Caleb.
Masha was obviously amazing, and I loved their depiction of the Wittebane Brothers’ Tale. I did notice that the local legend supposedly took place about twenty years before Gravesfield was reported to have been founded on the sign. That may be a sign that their story was incorrect, but who knows.
What really interested me was the implications of the story. Philip was an orphan with very little connection to his parents due to losing them when he was very young. Clearly, he was heavily dependent upon Caleb for his sense of safety and security, as well as his stable point to interact with the world. With Caleb leaving with Evelyn, Philip must have been left traumatized and terrified.
And Caleb…If Evelyn truly wasn’t evil, then he abandoned his brother by choice. It doesn’t really matter if he thought he’d be better off. His brother needed him, and he left.
Evelyn shares less of the blame, in my opinion, because Caleb might not have mentioned that he was an older brother or spoken of Philip. I tend to imagine her as a kind but spirited person who likely made Caleb realize there was more to life than the strict rules of Puritan society. She would likely have been a friend before they became lovers.
With that analysis done, I’ll get back to TTT.
During the possession scene, I was pretty conflicted. The animation was beautiful, and the voice acting was amazing. But I feel like it was needlessly cruel to Hunter to possess him, scar him for life, kill his therapy animal, and re-grow his hair so that he looked like his Ortet when his whole arc was about becoming his own person and learning he is not Caleb. Additionally, I’m mildly bothered by the writers making him want to carve palismen like Caleb when he had already demonstrated interest in sewing.
For The Future:
Philip’s travels were so interesting. It was horrific to watch him slowly fall apart as he desperately searched for a new body, even possessing an unfinished grimwalker to try to do the job. Some story boards and behind the scenes content revealed that Caleb and the Golden Guard ghosts were, in fact, hallucinations.
This was extremely impactful to me because it indicates that Philip had some inkling that what he’s doing is wrong, but he has fallen into the sink cost fallacy: the idea that something can’t be wrong because you invested so much time, energy, and resources into it. To put it simply, his guilt is driving him mad, but he has to continue because he knows there is no redemption for him.
New Hexside was okay. It was mildly annoying due to the change in tone feeling forced and disrupting compared to the extremely serious tone of Philip’s section. It was cool to see the way society had turned out for those who survived. I adore that it was an absolute mess, because it’s incredibly accurate for something run by teenagers.
I disliked the bit with Kikimora because it felt like a retcon of her arc in Kings Tide. She had been so obsessed with pleasing and serving someone in the pursuit of approval and greater power that she forgot she was also in danger from her hero’s plans. To restate it a way I’ve heard, “she was so focused on the boot she had on others’ necks that she didn’t notice the one on her own.” It was very gratifying to see her get retribution against Philip and play a part in saving the Isles. So FTF felt like a backslide to her.
Boscha was an interesting parallel to Philip in feeling abandoned by someone she cared about. So she attempted to force that person to stay. However, she is able to move on and accept that things have changed. It’s what would have happened if Philip had been able to let go, and I like that.
Willow’s breakdown was understandable, but not handled the best, and I dislike that she was “saved” when she doesn’t really like that sort of thing. It would have been better if Hunter and Gus had talked to her and let her slowly unload her feelings instead of being “saved” by Hunter.
I also dislike where their arcs end with them holding pinkies. Don’t get me wrong, I think that Huntlow is adorable and has a lot of potential. I just think that should be dealt with after they are more emotionally stable.
King and the Collector’s story was the least interesting to me, though I think the “new” Collector is adorable. I loved the dynamic they had as a somewhat malicious and irreverent being that will poke and prod at anything for some amusement. It really made him feel like a threat, and I liked that.
The new interpretation revealed by the interactions with King was sweet but less compelling to follow. I would have found it much more interesting for King to help him slowly come to understand human/demon/witch morals and the way what they did was wrong.
Philip’s tricking of the Collector felt like a little bit of a stress, but potentially in character as someone who was desperate to regain the power he had likely lost due to Vee. King’s dialogue for that bit felt kind of forced, but I can excuse it.
Watching and Dreaming:
Oh crud, here’s the real doozy. Watching and Dreaming was the biggest let down for me. It was stunning visually, and the animation was fluid as a whole. It looked amazing, and I was thrilled with the episode the first time I watched it. But the more I thought on it, the more issues I’ve found.
I thought the nightmare sequence was going to be far more significant than it was. I was hoping for a deep analysis on the ways that Luz and Philip mimicked each other in their desire to be the hero, protect the people they care about, and escape the unsatisfactory reality that they had previously lived in.
I thought we would see Eda face and potentially live out some of her greatest fears. Maybe she would accidentally hurt King or Luz. It would have been interesting to see her grapple this during an intense battle that would decide the fate of the Isles! It was disappointing for that to be over in fewer than ten minutes without any of the depth. I don’t really have much to say for King’s nightmare sequence.
On a far more minor note, I disliked Philip’s design during this episode. Yeah, Kaiju Philip was interesting looking, but he doesn’t carry any of the same weight or fear that he used to. The lack of detail and speech from him felt off, because he is a character who puts so much weight into words and manipulation, and we never really get to see him.
I also dislike the way that his color scheme changed. I really liked the dark green and glowing blue thing he had going on. It felt like ooze and rot, like the decay and destruction of a person’s very soul until it’s so twisted it’s no longer human. The lighter green feels sickly, and it gives me the same feeling I get when I touch a grainy eraser. I shudder, and I don’t know why. However, that’s about all on Philip’s design, now to the more major concerns and thoughts.
Luz’s death would have been far more effective if she had died more slowly and if people had noticed she was dead. Without anyone else acknowledging it, I just felt kind of hollow for the whole thing.
I thought that Papa Titan was cool, but I really dislike what he did to the narrative. This fight was set up to be horrific and challenging, that it would take every ounce of the characters’ strength. And King’s parent just kind of took that away.
Additionally, she denied all the buildup that was put into Philip’s character. Philip was set up to be tragic and sympathetic. It implied that anyone could become an extremist and hurt others because they got in too deep, and I related to Philip a lot as a character, as well as Hunter. To see him called just plain evil was disrespectful to the rest of the work put in and everything Wittebro fans hoped to see.
Some people believe that the backstory we got was sufficient for Philip’s character. Respectfully, I disagree. The pictures that were in the background of Hollow Mind were exactly that—background. It implied a tragic character that went off the deep end when he lost the only person he loved.
It suggests that, in a better world, Philip could have moved past his biases and the manipulation he experienced the way Boscha and Caleb did. He could have had a happy ending and been the person that Luz thought he was. By saying he was just evil and ignoring his backstory, Papa Titan and Luz do the exact same thing that Philip does: dehumanize the enemy and say that the group/person should be killed without remorse. It also dehumanizes or hurts those that connect with him due to religious trauma or other reasons.
It feels wrong when only a scene ago, Luz was telling the Collector that things weren’t that simple. But now, they magically are.
Papa Titan also breaks all of the themes that were set up earlier: the idea that you have to choose yourself, that there is no divine being that is going to make you special, and that Luz got where she did because she was open minded and hard working. By making the Titan gift her the runes, it discredits all the hard work she did and supports Philip’s comment that the reason he couldn’t get glyphs easily was because the Titan was making it difficult (as opposed to him being a closed minded individual who couldn’t connect to the Isles).
Luz didn’t really have a choice, and it’s never really addressed the way that the found family theme is ignored as a result of her being chosen. It also implied that all the growth she did over the previous two seasons was pointless, because she was the chosen one.
After that, the tone is distinctly more action based and exciting as opposed to the horrific and stressful encounter I was expecting. It felt like the fight wasn’t being taken seriously by the characters or the writers, and it made it hard to stay invested or take the stakes seriously.
The fight could have been the whistle Hexsquad taking on Philip and supporting each other. Hunter could have helped get people out of the way when they were being attacked. Gus could have distracted Philip and help people escape or even left him open to attack. Willow and Amity could have grappled him and harmed him. Camila could have given it her all with the bat. It could have really pushed the theme of community and connection and the way they impact people.
Finally, I want to talk about one last thing: Philip’s death. I laughed at it the first time I saw it. It was amusing and more than a touch satisfying, but it’s not what Philip deserved.
Philip was a tragic, hurt character who sacrificed his health, his morals, and everything about himself in the pursuit of protecting humanity from witches. He was evil and irredeemable, and I do not want him to be redeemed.
I wanted him to learn that it was all for nothing and that his guilt was justified, that he was fed lies by the people he admired and told what he did was right when it wasn’t. I wanted to see him break down at the knowledge of his actions and their consequences, the sins he committed. Then, I wanted him to die.
In later watching, the scene where Raine, Eda, and King stomp him to death feels cruel. I agree that he needed to die, but Philip couldn’t fight back. It doesn’t feel like something that good guys would do. And Luz just watching them do that felt wrong.
Epilogue:
I liked the epilogue as a whole, except for a bit on Hunter. The thing with him and Willow was cute, but he didn’t cut his hair again, and he went on to carve palisman. I feel as if it violates everything previously set up about him choosing to be himself, and that makes me a bit sad.
In Conclusion:
I think that the people who weee unsatisfied with the Wittebane lore have every right to be. It was the most impactful series of events for the future of the Isles. It was built up for ages and never carried through. Obviously, my opinion would change if there was a series or movie on them.
Evelyn was “spring” to Caleb, as she introduced him the first life and light that allowed him to be who he wanted to be.
Season Three had amazing animation and visual depiction, but it fumbled on the themes it had previously established and some of the character development.
I am so sorry for rambling/ranting so much on this. I hope I haven’t scared or upset you. Have a great day!

having such a hard time deciding whether Caleb should be killed by the owl beast or the common mold 😭 😭 bro I just want Philip to have trauma
Anyways here's the notes so far:
The Wittebane brothers live in the woods on the outskirts of Bonesborough in a little cabin
Caleb wears old clothes from gravesfield for nostalgia sake
Caleb makes clothes for Philip
Philip doesn't lie to the grimwalkers about their origins. He is bad at names- the first one he made he tried to lie to, but he couldn't handle it. The grimwalkers are created to be witchlings- yes, capable of magic, just very limited- so that they can go into public without a hood. The grimwalkers run errands and sometimes even go to school.
The current grimwalker, Hunter, named himself because he read the word in Caleb's old diary. He thought it was cool and philip didn't have the heart to tell him what it meant.
When Caleb was still alive, he was not careful- running into town, hanging out with Boiling Isles wildlife, or getting himself hurt trying to make his brother clothes.
Philip has fashioned an old hut in the woods into his home. Out of universe, it's like his owl house.
Hunter is in the abomination coven.
Eda is evil...well, kind of.
Philip only made a deal with the collector to help his brother.
The collector got bored of Philip and found Eda. She was much more reckless and willing to set him free - as long as he gave her power over her curse and sister.
Eda doesn't know yet that Lilith cursed her- she keeps her in a stasis mode of being young forever as a way to look down on her
Lilith acts as her bodyguard and student
Eda enforces the coven system - it was collector's idea and she agreed begrudgingly
Canon Luz and Canon Hunter accidentally travel to this warped reality during the events of Hollow Mind: after they land in the real midscape, after the knee memory, but before inner kid belos reveals himself as evil. Like in Canon, Eda, King, and Hooty successfully make the potion to get Luz and Hunter out. Since Eda is proficient in potions, she notices something odd about the potion. According to it, Luz and Hunter are actually close to what's known as a False Memory. However, Eda ignores this as she is just trying to bring Luz back.
The main break from the Canon is that instead of heading into the collector's painting, kid belos leads them into one showing belos sitting beside Caleb in a sick bed. Caleb's eyes are not scratched out.
Canon belos cones through the false memory along with Luz and Hunter. Since he is displaced, he ages rapidly until he is at his 400 year look.
Belos runs away as soon as he realizes he has entered a false memory. He knows the collector and therefore knows the legends of false memories. He accuses Luz for doing this to him but this is before he fully ages so she still sees him as inner kid belos and tries to explain
False Memory: a memory placed in a person's head by a higher power (the collector, probably idk) that does not belong to them in this timeline. It acts a portal of sorts into the reality it depicts. Since it's the collector's magic, only a titan (not glyphs or blood, just a titan itself) can pull someone out of this false memory
Please ask me questions I want to expand this lore

I'm glad that everyone brought up the uncertainty of Wittebanes' past, because I fixated on this way too much. 💀
We don't know exactly when Caleb disappeared from the human realm, even tho it's essential for understanding both Caleb's and Philip's personalities. Ton introduced us a piece of Wittebanes' story as an urban legend + it's also implied that Caleb and Philip contributed to the development of Gravesfield, bc it's weird to have such a pretencious monumet for just a local folklore characters. History insists that Philip was an adult when Caleb left, but still could not cope with the loss . However, why do paintings in Hollow mind show Philip as a child at the time of Caleb's disappearance?
Option one: the memory of Caleb running away is not an exact moment of his disappearance, it just shows that he and Evelyn traveled between worlds. The next memory shows Philip already on the Boiling Isles and he looks like a young adult. Perhaps he just guessed where Caleb had disappeared, based on his observations.
Second option: Caleb left Philip as a child. Philip grew up, dedicated his life to discover the portal to the demon realm, simultaneously participating in the life of the city and thus perpetuating himself and Caleb. This option is very unlikely, imo, because town stories portray brothers as equal acting personalities.
So the contradiction between Hollow mind pictures and urban history is either a plot hole or clever depiction of memory distortion. I remember Hunter in Hollow mind said smthing like "maybe he don't remember things correctly". Maybe he is. Toh has already dealt with how trauma changes memories as it was shown with Luz and Willow. The loss and betrayal of a parental figure (from Philip's pov) can easily put you in a vulnerable state comparable to how an orphan feels. Our memories are not necessarily objective, so it is quite possible that Philip's mind, could depict himself as a child, despite being an adult ass man at that time. It's all about trauma
Sorry for a long take, I just needed to release this verbal shit 💀💀

Shadow Puppets AU
Hey~o, I’m Dollie, my twin sister and I just finished watching the Owl House a week ago and started an AU rp on our private discord, but I made this blog to share little crumbs here and there, some writing, some art, if people are interested I might post big lore dumps but here are some basics
The Collector’s tablet has been hidden in the Human Realm, and was initially found by priest from Gravesfield who buried the tablet believing that a being of great Evil was inside it,
It was later uncovered by young Philip Wittebane, who is at first wary of the legends about the Devil in the Woods, but after hearing the Collector speak of living in the stars with his siblings, Philip comes to believe that what he’s found is actually an Angel
They quickly become friends, and play together a lot, their first real bonding experience being to make shadow puppets on the wall (hence Shadow Puppets AU)
Since the only people who can hear or see the Collector are people who have touched the Tablet, their antics are usually chalked up as Philip’s imagination as a lonely kid
However the Collector can also momentarily manifest and affect things in the physical plain, such as catching Philip when he falls out of a tree, or scaring away wolves, which has led to divisive whispers that he either has a Guardian Angel or has summoned a demon
Years later when Caleb leaves for the Demon Realm with Evelyn he takes the Collector’s Tablet with him, having been warned that there is a dangerous entity from the Demon Realm trapped inside
there’s more to this AU that extends into Philip’s adult life, and the Belos Era and more stuff about his childhood friendship with the Collector (who Philip names in this AU, it’s so cute) but I only promised the basics, I’ll elaborate later if there’s interest

I’ve been thinking about the timeline of the Wittebane brothers some more after talking with @sepublic and some friends on the TOH server, and I think I might have pieced together what happened back when the brothers disappeared.
With the first painting, it appears that that was the brothers' first encounter with Evelyn, as it would have taken time to either build or modify the archway, Philip's facial features and hair between the two paintings suggesting several months/years had passed before his presumed arrival to the Demon Realm, and how Philip couldn't have immediately followed Caleb or else Gravesfield wouldn't have a legend about the brothers in the first place.
As such, it could be Caleb and especially Philip drove Evelyn off during their first encounter, but unbeknownst to Philip, Caleb and Evelyn had made a connection during the meeting - particularly with Caleb convincing Philip not to tell anyone about meeting a witch in the woods. Over the next several months/years, Caleb and Evelyn would continue to meet in secret with a few trips to the Demon Realm at some point and falling in love. Eventually, Caleb came to the decision that he wanted to live in the Demon Realm permanently and be with Evelyn, never to return.
There, Caleb came clean to Philip about what he had been doing in secret ever since they met a real witch a while ago, talked about the incredible world where he would be living now, and asked if his brother and only other family member would come along before he left.
Since the jacket that Philip wears from the second painting to the present used to be Caleb's, perhaps it had been either handed down to Philip as clothes, or - as a friend suggested on Discord - maybe the jacket was part of a witch hunter's outfit that Caleb wanted to leave behind.
Tumblr media
However, anticipating that Philip might take the revelation badly, Caleb made and hid several rebuses and vials of Titan blood around Old Gravesfield so that if Philip changes his mind, he can follow them to the Demon Realm himself. After all, it appears as though Caleb had had quite an affinity for owls that left a strong impression upon his brother, and just like the rest of Old Gravesfield would have likely been well versed in making rebuses/familiar with the town's layout:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, Philip took the news of his brother's departure badly and maybe was unable to stop it, and told the rest of the town what happened before setting out to "rescue" his brother, wearing the jacket of a witch hunter in pursuit. Thus, both brothers disappeared and were never to be seen again - one out of their own choice to be with the witch they loved, the other on a mission to bring their brother "back home."
Holding this speculative timeline in mind as well as the passage of time for Philip's beard to grow out, it sure makes Caleb's elated expression and heartfelt embrace of his brother in the following paintings all the more tragic:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's not just Caleb seeing his brother after being separated for a while, this is Caleb who had left the Human Realm behind on likely a bad note with his brother. Caleb who despite the possibility that Philip wouldn't follow him through - still held onto the hope that his brother would come to be with him and change his mind after however long it took for them to reunite. Caleb who overlooked the possible witch hunter's outfit out of happiness at seeing that his brother "HAD" changed his mind.
Then just like fire creating the smoke along the left edge of the first painting, that happy reunion went down in flames...

A Personal Farewell to a Fic
So...
I've done these before, usually as a last note for a fic I did very few author's notes on, but I've never done one on Tumblr and most people probably don't want to hear this, but fuck it, I'm writing it.
This is my personal farewell to Bride of the Monster Duke, a fic that to this day is my longest and most popular and will probably remain so for quite a while. It's a fic that has a lot of meaning to me as a project and a symbol of how far I've come in a decade of writing fanfiction, and looking back on those ten years I've definitely come a long way from that lonely thirteen-year-old writing Warriors and Gravity Falls fanfic in her room.
And honestly, to that thirteen-year-old, I wanna say you've got this. Don't stop writing, don't stop creating, don't give up on anything because one day, you're gonna write things that people will love. You're finding yourself in your work, someone that people will love and care about deeply if you just take the time to put it out there and find those people.
Anyway, this is about a current work done by me in my twenties, not soothing my inner child, heh.
I started BOTMD as a personal project last May, inspired by a love of romance fantasy manhwa, at the time not realizing that not only would it become my most popular story ever but it would lead me to meeting friends online, people I probably never would've met otherwise. Star (love you so much, funky little internet-sis) and I were in the same server, but the same could not be said of Storm (love you too, big internet-sibling!). I only got into contact with them because I put this particular work out and they read it. And that's not even mentioning all the artists who for some unknown reason thought my writing was good enough to make art for it.
I was utterly flabbergasted with how much love BOTMD received, and I cannot be more grateful than I already am for everyone who's ever read the fic. Whether you found it on day one or you're finding it a year from now, everyone who's given the story this level of love and support deserves the biggest fucking internet hug I can give.
Thank you, everyone.
Thank you to the artists who brought this brainchild to life.
Thank you to Dana Terrace and the Owl Crew for bringing me this show that I fell in love with.
Thank you to Hunter and Willow for being my biggest inspiration and the source of my biggest writing streak in years.
Thank you to Star and Storm for sticking by me with this story and helping me write it, even when I was being weird and crazy, and for being my partners on our next project, Legends of Gravesfield.
And of course, thank you to the readers, because you guys made sure this story went around and more people read it.
Love all of you.
So long and thanks for all the fish!

What I want to see in the remaining episodes of The Owl House
The full backstory of Wittebane brothers
I want to know why they are so important for Gravesfield and how they became an urban legend. I mean they are very famous for being orphans, and Belos' memories were mostly about his own rage. I get the feeling that we still have some missing information.
The Birth / Reveal of Luz's Palisman
It is about to hatch and I'm very curious about what form it will have. I think it might be a griffin but there are lots of hints about it being a snake or an otter 😅
Raeda Wedding
This is just my wishful thinking, but seeing them get married on screen would be wonderful. Plus, Dana seems petty enough to put even gayer scenes 🥹
Lilith and Hooty
I miss them a lot and I want to make sure they are ok 🥺
The Collector and King Being Besties
I know most of the fandom is scared of the Collector but I just can't see them as an evil being. Compared to the salty incel Belos, they are a lonely kid with god powers. With King or other characters as their friend / playmate, they can be good.
Belos vs The Collector
I really want to see if Belos stands any chance against the Collector. I hate him as a character, but he is manipulative and powerful enough to fight in a duel. Any outcome would be interesting. Even better if Belos is destroyed completely in the end 🤬
Camilla and Eda meeting and becoming besties
I want them to meet and understand each other as the awesome moms they are.
Alador divorcing Odalia and putting her in jail
I know, this is another wishful thinking and we probably won't get enough time to see how their conflict ends up 🤦 But I'll be fine as long as there is a Blight family reunuon 🥹 AND LUZ NEEDS TO HEAR THAT SHE IS WELCOME IN BLIGHT FAMILY. ALADOR CAN BE A FATHER FIGURE TO HER 😭😭😭
Dadrius reunion with Hunter
I really want to see DADRIUS as a proud papa 🥹 He would be so proud of Hunter's sewing skills 🥹
CATS + Camilla vs Belos
I want them to go apeshit on Belos for all of the evil things he did 🤬
Realm Fusion or A Permanent Portal Between Realms
I want them to be able to coexist together. Either in a single, fused realm or through a permanent portal door. Humans being able to see magic and witches learning about humans would be so wholesome 🥰 And especially Luz, Camilla and Hexsquad would remain together 🥰

Hollow Fangs: Part Three
<Previous Ao3
tw: body horror, mild gore, animal death
Hunter stepped through the trees, snow crunching beneath his boots, Flapjack fluttering just ahead. Tweeting that he saw more of the prints in the snow and that Hunter should follow. Hunter complied, trudging forward hands in his pockets and breath visible in ghostly puffs. It might have been freezing cold, but thanks to the full moon he could see perfectly fine. The cool light glowing against snow drifts and casting black shadows off of pine trees
This human kingdom of ‘Maine’ reminded him of the knee with all its cold and snow and miles of wilderness, but according to Camila there weren’t any slitherbeasts here–
His throat abruptly went tight at the reminder, blinking back the sudden burning behind his eyes he pushed down the feeling and continued on through the snow.
There might not be slitherbeasts out here but there was something else.
Not a beast, a friend, a friend who desperately needed help.
“I should have noticed something was wrong!”
“Sweetie this isn’t your fault,”
“You don’t understand, I helped Un– Belos with his curse for years. I was with her when she got bitten! I know all the signs, I should have seen how much she was–”
Without warning Camila stepped around the counter and wrapped him up in a tight hug “I wish Luz had reached out to me to, I wish she told me how much she was struggling, but she chose to hide it from me, from all of us. And that was her choice and not your fault,”
Hunter buried his face in her shoulder with a sob.
Three months, it had been three months since they’d seen Luz when she tossed them into the portal with her last bit of clarity.
Actually it had been eleven weeks, five days, and approximately fourteen hours.
Not that any of them were counting.
It had taken three weeks to sort things out in the Boiling Isles and get back to the human realm, but by then Luz had been long gone from Gravesfield. Leaving them to chase rumors and urban legends in a desperate attempt to find where she’d gone. One day they’d have to try and hunt Belos down the same way but for now Luz was more important. In the meantime while trying to track her down they’d also worked on a way to actually help her once they found her…
Reflexively Hunter reached up to feel the shape of the bottle in his jacket pocket.
He and Eda had worked together, combining his knowledge of Belos’ curse with her potions know-how to come up with something that would help Luz. Luz was human so they couldn’t just use Eda’s elixir. And palismen were not an option, fortunately they’d found a much more potent alternative.
Titan’s blood was powerful stuff, their entire cauldron of modified elixir had only needed one tiny drop donated by an equally tiny titan–
“Bring her back, I’ll give you all the blood you need, just bring her back!”
Then just two weeks after they’d developed their ‘elixir’ they received a break. Hopkin’s cousin posting to his blog about the demon he’d seen flying around the backwoods of Maine.
That brought him to where he was now; him, Willow, Gus, and Amity prowling through the dark woods searching for any sign of Luz, lit only by the glowing moon, each with a bottle of modified elixir. They’d split up to cover more ground, with Eda covering the skies, but each of them had a human ‘radio’ to contact the others if they saw anything.
This was their fourth night of searching woods without any trace of her. Just tonight Hunter had been walking for hours, even through the coat and cloves the cold bit into him, but he forced himself to ignore it. Using years of scout training and practice to stuff down his own discomfort and focus on following the tracks he’d spotted twenty minutes ago. Large and clawed and dotted with blood. No matter how hard it was they couldn’t give up, he couldn’t give up. Luz had sacrificed everything to keep them safe and he couldn’t just let her–
Flapjack tweeted sharply in alarm, Hunter looking up at the sound and freezing midstep.
Up ahead the tracks led into a clearing, coming to a stop by a massive animal with black fur, a bear he remembered from Camila’s lessons about human animals. It lay sprawled on its side in the snow unmoving, blood dripping from its fur and muzzle.
But that wasn’t what stopped him in his tracks.
Another creature, just slightly smaller than the bear, was crouched in the snow, face buried in the bear’s belly. Wet crunching and tearing noises echoing through the cold woods as it devoured its– her meal.
Dark purple from head to toe, a pair of large wings sticking out of her back. Horns, not antlers sprouting straight up from the sides up her head, but crooked horns sweeping back from the top of her skull.
In many ways the sight in front of him should have been horrific, but Hunter wasn’t scared at all. Despite the cold he felt a warmth spreading out from his chest. A hopeful, desperate flutter rising in him.
Luz.
She was here. After months of searching here she was, right in front of him.
Shaking his head, forcing the surge of emotion back under control, Hunter squashed the urge to rush to her side and pulled out the radio. Raising it to his face and pressing down on the button.
“Guys, it’s Hunter, I found Luz,”
For a few seconds there was nothing but silence, then Eda’s voice crackled out of the device “How close is she, you have eyes on her?”
Hunter glanced up again, spotting Luz still facing away from him munching on the bear, his presence still unnoticed “I see her, she’s straight ahead out in the open, about forty feet west of my position,”
“Alright I’m heading your way, for now you keep watch on her. The rest of you kids stay quiet and try to surround the area we’re in in case she tries fleeing on foot. We’re bringing her home tonight,”
“Affirmative, over and out,”
Hunter put the radio away and stepped over to a nearby tree, partially crouching behind it to conceal his position. Flapjack fluttering over to perch on his shoulder as he settled in to wait.
He didn’t have to wait long.
Only a minute or so later he heard the soft flapping of feathers on air and saw a shadow swooping over the snow. Eda descending down in the clearing about twenty feet behind Luz.
Talons crunched against the snow, Luz snapping upright at the sound, gleaming gold eyes piercing through the silvery night, jaws dripping in blood.
“Hey kiddo,” Eda’s voice was soft “It’s ok, it’s just me,”
Luz hissed, backing away until she was perched on top of the bear’s carcass, wings flaring in alarm.
“Hey hey I’m not here to hurt you,” Eda folded her wings behind her back and knelt down in the snow, probably trying to make herself look smaller and less threatening “Three months fending for yourself in the wild, dang kid, I always knew you were tough,”
Another hiss and Eda made a shushing sound, Hunter didn’t move, eyes locked on the two of them.
“You fought the good fight, but you don’t have to tough it out any more…” Eda pulled out her own elixir bottle, a deep sapphire blue in the dark woods “We’re here for you, just let us help,”
Luz snarled, this time the sound was almost a roar. Teeth bared and wings fluttering rapidly, ready to take flight.
Eda slowly got to her feet, eyes never once leaving Luz “Blondie get ready to move,”
Hunter started a bit when he realized she was addressing him.
“Luz is gonna make a break for it any second,” her voice stayed low and steady, even as her wings spread to their full length, gaze never once leaving Luz “I’m going to try to grab her, but if she gets away from me I need you to be ready with your elixir, can you do that?”
“Y– yes,”
“Good,” Eda lowered into a crouch, wings flared, Luz mimicking her stance with a growl “Get ready…”
All at once Luz launched into the sky only to have Eda shoot up and tackle her in midair.
The two tousled in the sky, Hunter watching with a death grip on his staff, not even daring to breathe.
“Come on kid, easy does it…” Eda uncorked the elixir with her teeth “I’ve got you–”
Luz opened her jaw wide, wider, hanging down unhinged, for a moment he couldn’t help but think of Belos–
An ear splitting shriek echoed through the woods, Hunter slapping his hands over his ears in a franting attempt to try and dull the drilling pain. Eda was writhing in midair, struggling to keep her grip on Luz.
Quick as lightning Luz stretched her arms out, grabbed Eda by the shoulders, and threw her off.
Eda shot past him and crashed through the brush beyond Hunter’s line of sight. The sapphire blue elixir spilling uselessly on the snow. At any other time he’d run to Eda’s side to check for injuries, but right now–
Luz shook herself off, wings fluttering to regain her bearings, readying to take off into the sky.
Hunter wasn’t going to give her that chance.
He flashstepped once, twice, three times and he was directly behind her. Throwing his arms around her neck without wasting a second.
Luz howled, thrashing and clawing at him from behind. Wings like clubs battering him left and right but he forced his grip to stay iron.
This was bad. She was strong, really strong. It was only a matter of time until she threw him off or screamed again. He needed to disorient her long enough to give her the elixir. He’d only ever tried this once so he had to make it count–
Gritting his teeth, Hunter adjusted his grip to shift his staff up into his hands, barely able to hang on to the twisting, howling Luz.
Then he stepped.
Luz’s writhing increased tenfold, her shriek of rage turning into one of confusion, and he stepped again.
Hunter managed to step three more times before he became disoriented himself. The two of them crash landing in the snow.
Before Luz could regain her bearings he positioned himself directly between her wings, swinging his staff around her front and grabbing it. Gripping the staff tight with both hands and pulling her back to his chest, her wings thrashing harmlessly on either side of him, arms pinned to her sides as she screeched and clawed at the air.
I’m sorry I didn’t see how much you were hurting, I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you needed me. But I’m here now and I won’t let you down again.
Luz shrieked and howled and thrashed in the snow, Hunter having to fight to maintain his grip, but he didn’t have to hold her forever. It was only a matter of time until she tried her sonic scream again, had to time this just right–
He shifted the top of his staff into the grip of his elbow, grabbing the elixir with his now free hand.
In front he heard the tell tale pops of her jaw opening.
Hunter’s gloved hand tightened around the bottle, heart pounding.
Almost, almost…
He saw her jaw dropping open impossibly wide, heard the sharp intake of breath–
Now!
Hunter popped the cap off with his thumb and shoved the bottle into her wide open maw, pouring its contents down her throat.
Her shriek trailed off into a gurgle, claws scrabbling against the snow as the glowing blue elixir slowly drained away and vanished down her throat.
The now empty bottle dropped soundlessly into the snow, Luz still hissing and thrashing against him as Hunter held her back with his staff.
For a few moments nothing happened, then a shudder swept through Luz’s entire body, arms and legs trembling and wings slowly but surely shrinking away.
Heart leaping, Hunter nevertheless kept his grip steady as Luz’s body slowly but surely shrank in his grip. Wings and horns receded and vanished, purple bled away into brown. Then he was holding Luz, human Luz. Standing there in the snow, Azura costume reduced to filthy rags and hair in tangles hanging down to her waist.
She wobbled on her feet, Hunter dropping his staff, Flapjack fluttering around to her front, in order to grab her by the shoulders. Holding her upright, keeping one hand firmly on her shoulder as he stepped around to face her.
“...ugh…Hunter? Wha…” Luz looked up at him, brown eyes blearily blinking at him through tangles of dark brown hair “Wha…what did I…”
She glanced down, staring at her arms and watching her fingers flex, going up to touch the dried blood still caked on her face, eyes going wide and horrified as the realization sank in.
“It’s ok! That’s…that’s just from a bear,”
If Luz heard him his words didn’t have any effect, arms going up to wrap around herself, entire body trembling “Hunter I– I– I’m sorry I did– I didn’t–”
“I…uh…like what you’ve done with your hair,”
Luz looked up sharply at him.
Hunter gave an uneasy smile, curling a finger through his forelock.
She just blinked back at him.
Oh titan how could he be so stupid, after everything Luz had been through of course she–
A wet sound bubbled up from the back of her throat, then another, a third and a fourth and Hunter realized the sound was laughter.
Luz was laughing hysterically, before he knew what was happening Hunter was laughing right along with her. The two of them laughing and sobbing standing there in the snow in the dark woods, tears rolling down their cheeks. The emotion coursing through them more than their bodies could contain.
“Wait is that– Luz!”
“Luz!”
“Luz!”
They snapped their heads around, seeing Amity, Gus, and Willow running through the woods towards them from various directions. Three sets of eyes shining with tears
“Luz!”
“Sweet Potato!”
Amity swooped her up into a tight hug that Luz just as readily returned. Hunter had just enough time to smile at the sight before Willow and Gus collided with them and snagged them in their arms.
Someone was squeezing him, he and Luz were still laughing, everyone was crying. Then another voice cut through the sobs and hiccups.
“Luz…”
Luz’s eyes went huge, the rest of them shuffling out of the way giving Luz a clear view of the person hovering at the edge of the clearing.
“Eda….?” her voice was small, eyes large, staring like she expected the harpy witch to vanish at any second.
Eda’s own black and gold eyes filled with tears “Luz!” she swooped forward, trapping all of them in a tight, feathery hug.
There were feather’s in Hunter’s face, someone’s elbow digging into his ribs, his arms pinned to his sides from the crush of bodies, and it was still freezing cold. But there was nowhere else he’d rather be than right here.
Luz, their Luz was here, right back here with them.
Above all the other cries Luz let out a keening sound that trailed off into a wet sobs “Guys…I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. It’s just– at first I thought it was nothing, but then when I figured out it wasn’t– So much time had passed and we were all so worried about making a new portal and I didn’t want to make you feel worse–”
Eda shushed her, the eleven armed two winged group hug pulling in tighter “That doesn’t matter now, the important thing is you’re back,”
“Yeah,” Gus piped up “We can talk all about that stuff once we’re out of the snow,”
Luz let out another wet laugh “Yeah, now that you mention it, it is very cold out here, and I am not dressed warmly,”
They all laughed again.

If Pip’s curse is getting worse, does that mean one day he might get stuck as the monster?
Hypothetically yeah it could happen, but I love my edgelord son too much make him go through arguably a fate worse than death, though it’s a really interesting idea.
But it’s a later rather than sooner thing.
Main reason is because it mostly just gets worse when Pip’s really going through it in the latter half of season 2 and especially all of season 3 because of stress of literally everything that is going on and not being able to properly fully control the curse by eating magic (this only applies really in season 3) so usually it’s not so extreme that it shows on his body or he fully transforms.
Another thing is that the curse is not as strong as it should be, when Belos was creating Pip he inadvertently sort of split the curse, kinda like what Lilith did with Eda but in a much more literal way (usually grimwalkers only need a bone just to infuse them with the dna but Belos had to hack one of his arms off because he really wanted to get the perfect copy of himself) which ended with at most maybe slightly less than half of the curse in Pip.
Also Pip is like only 15 to 16 in the au, he hasn’t lived long enough like Eda or Belos for the curse properly spiral out of control and have a risk of fully taking over forever, so it’ll probably take a couple years for it to happen unless he decides to stop eating magic which will quicken the process even more.
It does almost happen in season 3 multiple times tho just because the human realm really hits Pip in the face, he also ends up accidentally causing a new urban legend and people now think Gravesfield cemetery/woods are haunted by a demon or in one case a alien science experiment that escaped the government, in reality it’s just Pip who’s stuck, feral and looking for something to eat.
Soz for the long post, asks like this make my brain go brrrrrrr so thanks ^^
