#aaaa dangit ;v;#first of all it's honestly unfathomable you managed to draw this on your phone how on earth#you must have some intense fine motor skills to achieve this kind of precision on such a small screen#zero judging necessary#their body language seems so natural yet expressive I love it#the way Vasco is leaning over the counter like he owns the place (he doesn't but certainly does his best to give that impression)#his expression is terribly endearing as well#to me he seems a tiny bit hesitant which is a fun contrast to his confident pose#and Machete sipping his coffee with such finesse#you made him look so refined#but he's just called white boy now#really makes you think of the awkward and drawn-out trying-to-break-the-ice phase that probably preceded this#this is so sweet and you depicted them so well! thank you!#gift art#nejd08#own characters#Vasco#Machete#modern au#I wonder if Vasco is a genuine caffeine wizard#or is he just average at best or even lowkey awful and Machete keeps going there anyway because the barista is cute and nice to him

Went on a bit of a Google adventure this morning because the hanzi name for China is 中國 (Middle Kingdom) and then Duolingo started me on education terms and presented me with 中学校 (middle school). I wasn't entirely sure whether China even has the same education levels as us or if this was just a very literal translation (verdict: different terms used, but 中 is present), but I am aware that some Chinese American kids go to Chinese school to learn the language and culture. In Duolingo at least, to indicate Chinese cuisine they just write 中餐, not 中國餐, which made me wonder, would Chinese school also be 中学校? Could someone, at least someone working within the American school system, reasonably say that they need to leave 中学校 on time so they can go to 中学校?
The answer appears to be no because the website for our local Chinese school at least says 中文学校 (Chinese language school), but it was interesting to contemplate from a linguistic chaos perspective.

how to revise effectively
revision is a very important part of education, but many people have no idea how. in this post i'm going to outline the basics of revision. it's important to note that different subjects will require you to revise differently, there is no one size fits all when it comes to revision.
less is more- studying for 30 focused minutes is way more effective than a 5 hour study session while you watch tv.
work on exam technique- this is such an overlooked part of revising for an exam, but if you know how to answer the questions and what structures to use, it will really help you. ask your teacher or search for your exam board online to find out the best way for your subject and exam board.
manage distractions- if like me you get distracted super easily, you need to create an environment with limited distractions. this means put your phone on do not disturb, if your house/place of study is noisy put some headphones on and listen to classical music or study ambience (my favourites are the Harry Potter rooms by Asmrweekly on youtube). if you get distracted while studying by thinking of things you need to do, something that's really helped me is to have a piece of paper next to me that i can write all my thoughts on, so i can continue studying and do what i've written afterwards.
set precise goals for your study session- this helps to reduce procrastination. for example, if I put "study geography" on my to do list i'll procrastinate, but if I put "do 30 flashcards for the topic hazards" I have a clear idea of what I need to do
use the pomodoro method- having breaks is really important in keeping you engaged while you're studying. I don't follow the typical timings, but I usually do between 30-45 minutes of studying followed by a 10-15 minute break depending on how I'm feeling
utilise your study breaks- it's so easy to pick your phone up and scroll through tiktok until you realise your 5 minute break turned into a 3 hour tiktok binge. when I go on a study break, I only go on my phone to snap people back, or for a little scroll on pinterest. I also like to get some more water, grab a snack and stretch. If I'm having a longer break, I'll try to get outside and go for a walk, especially if the weather is good (in England this is about 5 days of the year haha)
now, onto different ways to revise
doing past papers
doing flashcards
making timelines
doing essay plans
making mindmaps
blurting
quizzes
if you study languages, practicing translations or specific types of questions that come up in the exam (for my exam board this is things like gap fill activities, 90 word listening or writing summaries, finding synonyms in a text etc.)

Stop pretending to know Spanish to seem more diverse 🙄 it doesn make you less of a white girl
*flashbacks to talking to a Colombian woman who just moved to the US and helping her learn English because I can talk to her in Spanish* yep that’s definitely what I’m doing, I’m pretending to be diverse

... and there will be no more monsters in human skin like me.
~
caterpillar, the man you are. a 400yo prison dweller who only broke free to let an innocent little girl reunite with her family. hoyo needs to stop giving us deeply compelling and layered hilichurl npcs this cant keep going on like this.
this was a joy to work on! the direct link between cater's human colour scheme and his hilichurl one made everything fit together so nicely, and i had fun trying to catch all the little details (like the two feathers hanging out from underneath his cardigan that represent the feathery neckpiece on the churl form). not only did this piece succeed in freeing me from the brainrot it also gave me more confidence in my capability to do nice full pieces digitally. so its a win win!
#lil tam arts#caterpillar genshin impact#genshin impact caterpillar#caterpillar gi#genshin caterpillar#boy isnt popular enough to have one fixed tag smh#genshin impact fanart#genshin fanart#digital art#the hilichurl fur was so rewarding to shade i was so scared but i actually love that detail the most#also the butterflies. i love them#i wanna look cater deep in the eyes and tell him that hes everything a human should be. that he achieved what he was tasked with. that#he left his chrysalis a long time ago#and hes free to fly on his own#once again going insane over the fact that hoyo keeps humanizing the hilichurls#the monsters the game tells us to kill from literally the very start#i keep thinking about how they have a genuine language that can be learned. how they used to be human genuinely literally in canon.#how they have so many rituals that they share with humans#they are a people. and yet#and yet#ANYWAYS i hope if u read this far u like the art lol ily bye

an approximate map of pre-european contact (though the last one seems to be post-contact) language families in continental north america, showing the spread and migration of different groups throughout the continent. some notes:
these maps include 42 independent language families, 37 isolates, and over 20 linguistic areas altogether.
the oto-manguean (180), uto-aztecan (69), algic (46), and na-dené (45) families have the most languages within them.
the north american family with the most widely-spoken languages is the uto-aztecan family. the most widely-spoken indigenous language in north america today is nahuatl, an uto-aztecan language which is spoken in central mexico and diaspora in the united states by over 1.7 million people.
other widely-spoken indigenous languages in north america today are the various mayan languages spoken throughout guatemala, belize, and mexico such as q'echi', k'iche', mam, tzeltal, and tzotzil.
in general, mexico, guatemala, and belize are home to most of the most commonly spoken indigenous north american languages. other large north american countries such as the united states and canada house comparatively few speakers. (the most common in the former is navajo (na-dené, 170,000), and in the latter, cree (algic, 96,000).) differences in colonization methods and population density/climate/environment before the fact account for the lower numbers.
the linguistic diversity/number of language families in a given area is mostly due to climate and environment. drier and flatter regions are lower in linguistic diversity as the space facilitates the movement of the population within them. (the same thing happened with the turkic and uralic families.) more mountainous and lush environments discourage this. (this happened in what's today papua new guinea.)
the relation between north american and siberian indigenous languages has been hypothesized, but no definite conclusion has been accepted. the most famous theoretical grouping is the hypothetical dené–yeniseian family, which links the na-dené family with the yeniseian languages of central siberia. a family which definitely stretches out to siberia is the inuit–yupik–unangan family (referred to here a eskimo-aleut).
due to colonization, including forced displacement and assimilation, there are many native languages which are either unattested to or were wiped out altogether. these maps only consist of what we know about.
#turtle island#languageposting#my posts#couldn't find a great map of central american languages#or of the carribean islands. sorry about that#also please don't take ''colonization differences'' as the british somehow being worse or the spanish being kinder#the spanish british french dutch portugese and russians all had the same goal they just had different ways to achieve it#(yes russians were there too they were just on the other side of the continent & not as successful)

I have taught an entire discord server the German word for pussy. This has awoken the desire to learn German in at least one person, who has been speaking in full sentences and with passable pronunciation after only half an hour.
Santa is skipping my house this year, but damn if I'm not impressed.
#fun with language#German#sharing is caring#friends don't let friends conjugate alone#I've taught them the formal you to make some of the sentences moderately more polite#you can achieve anything with the right motivation#right being subjective here

Okay I understand the confusion of “lose” and “loose”(I don’t) but “YOUR” AND “YOU’RE”???
Are we actually being serious? Is it laziness or did we actually forget first grade spelling class. I’m not talking about non-native speakers but the ones that only know English what are we doing? Same thing with “two”, “too”, and “to”. What kind of epidemic are we living through because there’s no way you’re not understand the difference.
And I tried to be understanding at first because I know a lot of people who aren’t fluent in English or just didn’t grow up with it, my family included. But for my friends that have lived here their whole lives and have never spoken another language this is an issue. Every time one of them writes “your” but they mean “you’re”, a small fragment of my soul fades. “You’re house” am I??? The little blue dots underline the word as I write this.
When I say it’s going to be rare to know how to properly write in the future I was not kidding. Some mistakes are just mistakes but there’s people that never get it right, not even once. Once again, this doesn’t apply to the non native speakers. Although I must say, my mom has very limited English vocabulary but she knows the difference.
Do you know how much I cringed while revising my friend’s final essay. He was complaining that his English teacher scolded him for writing “u” instead of “you” and it was hard to keep my mouth shut— I repeat it was his final essay, and the final draft. And it’s not the way we’ve been taught it, because I know a handful of people that understand grammar and the majority of us have been taught the same thing in the same classroom.
I know people who brag about not knowing multiplication by 4, but that’s a different conversation.
I was born here, but I grew up only speaking Spanish until I started school and I’m thriving, so maybe it’s just me that can’t comprehend how someone who was born and raised here, whose entire family only knows English, who only writes in English can’t understand the difference between “you’re” and “your”. If there’s actually something that prevents you from learning it or understanding it then this isn’t about you either. I am talking about the people who just don’t care to learn or who don’t try at all. No one else other than that.
I’m sorry for this rant but I’m not because it had to be said. I apologize if it’s controversial but I just had to share. I’m not the queen of English grammar either but I know the basics (the bare minimum). For the final time, I am not talking about non-native speakers, or people genuinely have a hard time learning this stuff or remembering it. Take what I said with a grain of salt but my opinion remains and I express it shamelessly.
#if you speak another language you’re off the hook because that’s a whole achievement#but only English speakers…#if you’re going to only know one language at least know it right#what the hell do I tag this as#rant#grammar#or lack of thereof#I am a member of the grammar police#english language#school#proper grammar#difference between your and you’re#your: 1. belonging to or associated with the person or people that the speaker is addressing.#your: 2. belonging to or associated with any person in general.#you’re: you are#that’s all#thanks for reading#I want a man that knows proper grammar is that too much to ask
