#aaaa dangit ;v;#first of all it's honestly unfathomable you managed to draw this on your phone how on earth#you must have some intense fine motor skills to achieve this kind of precision on such a small screen#zero judging necessary#their body language seems so natural yet expressive I love it#the way Vasco is leaning over the counter like he owns the place (he doesn't but certainly does his best to give that impression)#his expression is terribly endearing as well#to me he seems a tiny bit hesitant which is a fun contrast to his confident pose#and Machete sipping his coffee with such finesse#you made him look so refined#but he's just called white boy now#really makes you think of the awkward and drawn-out trying-to-break-the-ice phase that probably preceded this#this is so sweet and you depicted them so well! thank you!#gift art#nejd08#own characters#Vasco#Machete#modern au#I wonder if Vasco is a genuine caffeine wizard#or is he just average at best or even lowkey awful and Machete keeps going there anyway because the barista is cute and nice to him

how to revise effectively
revision is a very important part of education, but many people have no idea how. in this post i'm going to outline the basics of revision. it's important to note that different subjects will require you to revise differently, there is no one size fits all when it comes to revision.
less is more- studying for 30 focused minutes is way more effective than a 5 hour study session while you watch tv.
work on exam technique- this is such an overlooked part of revising for an exam, but if you know how to answer the questions and what structures to use, it will really help you. ask your teacher or search for your exam board online to find out the best way for your subject and exam board.
manage distractions- if like me you get distracted super easily, you need to create an environment with limited distractions. this means put your phone on do not disturb, if your house/place of study is noisy put some headphones on and listen to classical music or study ambience (my favourites are the Harry Potter rooms by Asmrweekly on youtube). if you get distracted while studying by thinking of things you need to do, something that's really helped me is to have a piece of paper next to me that i can write all my thoughts on, so i can continue studying and do what i've written afterwards.
set precise goals for your study session- this helps to reduce procrastination. for example, if I put "study geography" on my to do list i'll procrastinate, but if I put "do 30 flashcards for the topic hazards" I have a clear idea of what I need to do
use the pomodoro method- having breaks is really important in keeping you engaged while you're studying. I don't follow the typical timings, but I usually do between 30-45 minutes of studying followed by a 10-15 minute break depending on how I'm feeling
utilise your study breaks- it's so easy to pick your phone up and scroll through tiktok until you realise your 5 minute break turned into a 3 hour tiktok binge. when I go on a study break, I only go on my phone to snap people back, or for a little scroll on pinterest. I also like to get some more water, grab a snack and stretch. If I'm having a longer break, I'll try to get outside and go for a walk, especially if the weather is good (in England this is about 5 days of the year haha)
now, onto different ways to revise
doing past papers
doing flashcards
making timelines
doing essay plans
making mindmaps
blurting
quizzes
if you study languages, practicing translations or specific types of questions that come up in the exam (for my exam board this is things like gap fill activities, 90 word listening or writing summaries, finding synonyms in a text etc.)

Stop pretending to know Spanish to seem more diverse 🙄 it doesn make you less of a white girl
*flashbacks to talking to a Colombian woman who just moved to the US and helping her learn English because I can talk to her in Spanish* yep that’s definitely what I’m doing, I’m pretending to be diverse

an approximate map of pre-european contact (though the last one seems to be post-contact) language families in continental north america, showing the spread and migration of different groups throughout the continent. some notes:
these maps include 42 independent language families, 37 isolates, and over 20 linguistic areas altogether.
the oto-manguean (180), uto-aztecan (69), algic (46), and na-dené (45) families have the most languages within them.
the north american family with the most widely-spoken languages is the uto-aztecan family. the most widely-spoken indigenous language in north america today is nahuatl, an uto-aztecan language which is spoken in central mexico and diaspora in the united states by over 1.7 million people.
other widely-spoken indigenous languages in north america today are the various mayan languages spoken throughout guatemala, belize, and mexico such as q'echi', k'iche', mam, tzeltal, and tzotzil.
in general, mexico, guatemala, and belize are home to most of the most commonly spoken indigenous north american languages. other large north american countries such as the united states and canada house comparatively few speakers. (the most common in the former is navajo (na-dené, 170,000), and in the latter, cree (algic, 96,000).) differences in colonization methods and population density/climate/environment before the fact account for the lower numbers.
the linguistic diversity/number of language families in a given area is mostly due to climate and environment. drier and flatter regions are lower in linguistic diversity as the space facilitates the movement of the population within them. (the same thing happened with the turkic and uralic families.) more mountainous and lush environments discourage this. (this happened in what's today papua new guinea.)
the relation between north american and siberian indigenous languages has been hypothesized, but no definite conclusion has been accepted. the most famous theoretical grouping is the hypothetical dené–yeniseian family, which links the na-dené family with the yeniseian languages of central siberia. a family which definitely stretches out to siberia is the inuit–yupik–unangan family (referred to here a eskimo-aleut).
due to colonization, including forced displacement and assimilation, there are many native languages which are either unattested to or were wiped out altogether. these maps only consist of what we know about.
#turtle island#languageposting#my posts#couldn't find a great map of central american languages#or of the carribean islands. sorry about that#also please don't take ''colonization differences'' as the british somehow being worse or the spanish being kinder#the spanish british french dutch portugese and russians all had the same goal they just had different ways to achieve it#(yes russians were there too they were just on the other side of the continent & not as successful)

Okay I understand the confusion of “lose” and “loose”(I don’t) but “YOUR” AND “YOU’RE”???
Are we actually being serious? Is it laziness or did we actually forget first grade spelling class. I’m not talking about non-native speakers but the ones that only know English what are we doing? Same thing with “two”, “too”, and “to”. What kind of epidemic are we living through because there’s no way you’re not understand the difference.
And I tried to be understanding at first because I know a lot of people who aren’t fluent in English or just didn’t grow up with it, my family included. But for my friends that have lived here their whole lives and have never spoken another language this is an issue. Every time one of them writes “your” but they mean “you’re”, a small fragment of my soul fades. “You’re house” am I??? The little blue dots underline the word as I write this.
When I say it’s going to be rare to know how to properly write in the future I was not kidding. Some mistakes are just mistakes but there’s people that never get it right, not even once. Once again, this doesn’t apply to the non native speakers. Although I must say, my mom has very limited English vocabulary but she knows the difference.
Do you know how much I cringed while revising my friend’s final essay. He was complaining that his English teacher scolded him for writing “u” instead of “you” and it was hard to keep my mouth shut— I repeat it was his final essay, and the final draft. And it’s not the way we’ve been taught it, because I know a handful of people that understand grammar and the majority of us have been taught the same thing in the same classroom.
I know people who brag about not knowing multiplication by 4, but that’s a different conversation.
I was born here, but I grew up only speaking Spanish until I started school and I’m thriving, so maybe it’s just me that can’t comprehend how someone who was born and raised here, whose entire family only knows English, who only writes in English can’t understand the difference between “you’re” and “your”. If there’s actually something that prevents you from learning it or understanding it then this isn’t about you either. I am talking about the people who just don’t care to learn or who don’t try at all. No one else other than that.
I’m sorry for this rant but I’m not because it had to be said. I apologize if it’s controversial but I just had to share. I’m not the queen of English grammar either but I know the basics (the bare minimum). For the final time, I am not talking about non-native speakers, or people genuinely have a hard time learning this stuff or remembering it. Take what I said with a grain of salt but my opinion remains and I express it shamelessly.
#if you speak another language you’re off the hook because that’s a whole achievement#but only English speakers…#if you’re going to only know one language at least know it right#what the hell do I tag this as#rant#grammar#or lack of thereof#I am a member of the grammar police#english language#school#proper grammar#difference between your and you’re#your: 1. belonging to or associated with the person or people that the speaker is addressing.#your: 2. belonging to or associated with any person in general.#you’re: you are#that’s all#thanks for reading#I want a man that knows proper grammar is that too much to ask

something that really annoys me is when antis make fun of joonie when he words things in english a certain way. like this man is self taught. he learned an entire language by himself, and has been translating for the whole group since debut; even when translators are present bc it's become expected of him. like one thing we're not going to do is downplay his intelligence because his sentence structure in a self taught second language was a little off in a casual live. western kpop stans keep showing their asses n its wild.
#and its so wild bc likeeeee#none of these idols even have beef#its the fandoms#and they bring the idols into it for no reason#and its saurrrrrrr interesting how whenever western stans wanna poke fun#it always comes back to language#or attempting to boost white western artists in charts solely to bar asian acts from achieving things and breaking records#funny how it always comes back to appearances#like noses or eyes hmmm#weird how that happens#weird how it always comes back to that#u suck n if i could pelt u w tomatoes i would

the amount of tumblr posts that i've seen that are like "obviously we should all be against the genocide and support palestine liberation, but also don't call for the dismantlement of Israel or curse out the IDF or call zionism evil cause have you considered our feelings???" bestie i think you don't rly support indigenous liberation then
#zionism is a death cult and it's so clear#but in tumblr it's annoying cause they know how to cover it up with woke language#if your ethnostate requires you to murder and lie and depend on genocidal war machines to be achieved#then maybe your ethnostate doesn't deserve to exist. like. didn't we cover ut on decolonization 101

Wicked the Musical is a flawless masterpiece and here’s why
it touched my heart as a child and so no flaw it has means anything to me or my everlasting love for it
#this post is not about anything#why talk to me about ‘the pacing in the second act’ or ‘the lyrics you find awkward’ when I love it? what do you hope to achieve?#I‘ve memorised the entire show in two languages and I’m currently working on a third#it’s probably been years since more than a week went by without me singing a song from it#sometimes things match the frequency of your soul and you can’t help but become connected#inextricably#in a metaphorical way not a ‘buy crystals’ kind of way#posts that are nothing#posts that mean nothing#posts that are just for me#wicked#wicked the musical#musicals#musical theater#musical theatre#if the movie is good I will be happy#if the movie is bad I will not care#my partner performs in 3 stage musicals and I perform in 0 and somehow *I’m* the musical theatre nerd between us#the ‘somehow’ is that it’s true and I am

the carpentry crew got sick of listening to the same pop playlists at work yesterday (Spotify algorithm makes everything so samey even if you try vastly different starting points) so for the last two hours of the workday I went out on a limb and requested opera bangers. it went over terrifically despite initial skepticism. makes sense once I realized that classical music (“classical” in the broadest sense) is what we use culturally to signal elevated moments of high drama or emotion. even sweeping sawdust feels epic when carmina burana is the soundtrack
#i got a good grade in workplace music taste something that is reasonable to want and possible to achieve#I’m so shy about music requests bc my actual listening habits are either a niche we have not explored as a group#ie irish-language folk tunes or kpop (could go over well but likely polarizing and I’m scared)#or things I know other people also like but are not gonna get us through the workday (soft folkpop/folk rock for contemplative lesbians)#many people at work enjoy listening to hozier but in a week is simply not gonna give you the oomph to pick up the 300 pound wall#the coworker who is most irritated by the samey playlists is in fact a surprise opera enjoyer so I also satisfied his tastes! HAH!#i will go mad with power and next thing they know they’ll be trapped in four hours of 15th c Italian madrigals#tree.txt

where's my meandering, character-focused, meticulously worldbuilt fantasy novel about a character being exiled from their homeland and forced to start a completely new life in a very foreign land. would love to write it but I have too many other things in line. I deserve to read it though
#I'm imagining with like the same approach to plot as The Goblin Emperor#with some similarities to The Kingkiller Chronicles maybe. and The Hands of the Emperor#bonus points if it's kind of like The Priory of the Orange Tree in that two parts of the world are very cut off from one another#mc should be either some kind of minor prince figure or an up-and-coming academic or expert at something#that was just on the brink of achieving some long-sought-for goal or glory until everything went wrong and all of that came crashing down#now they are cast out into a strange land with nothing but a little (foreign) money and the clothes on their back#they don't even speak the language!#their previous skills/titles/accolades aren't valued in the same way/they no longer have credentials or access to their previous safety net#they don't even know the right way to eat the food!#they have a lot of cultural biases that they're going to be forced to unlearn very uncomfortably!

being this fluent in english kind of fucked me up because now i have this huge standard i set for myself when it comes to languages that im never gonna achieve again and it makes me feel disheartened and intimidated about start learning a new one
#like im probably never gonna achieve this level of fluency in any other language and thats ok#english is extremely over abundant onlyne theres whole WEBSITED (like this one) with millions of people where over 90% of users post#exclusively in english#all the most famous tv shows and songs and books and youtubers etc are in english#obviously other languages also have all those things but theyre not gonna be as easy to just come by#and youre not gonna be swimming in it. they arent gonna be the norm like english is#so yeah ill probably never gonna be as fluent in any other languages and i need to let that expectation go or ill just be scared forever and#never learn anything else#anyways. i kinda want to start officially learning spanish#as a brazilian thats kind of just whatever like its not hard or Different™ by any means but its gonna be more useful in my day to day life#than something like idk french of mandarin (which i would also like to learn)
