TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Bargain (2022, South Korea)
Director: Jeon Woo Sung
Writers: Jeon Woo Sung, Choi Byeong Yun & Kwak Jae Min (based on the short film by Lee Chung Hyun)
Mini-review:
I have to say I loved how batshit crazy and unhinged this drama is. You can never really know what it's going to throw at you next, and I feel like that's very hard to achieve these days. Beyond that, the drama makes brilliant use of its long single-take, real-time scenes, which make you feel like you're right there with the characters. The sets are also incredible, and they make the whole thing feel so claustrophobic (in a good way, I guess). On top of that, Jeon Jong Seo, Jin Seok Kyu and Chang Ryul give three show-stopping performances that certainly rank among the very best of their careers. Tbh, I can understand why many people disliked it (the characters tend to ramble, the epilogue feels very unnecesary and sometimes it gets a bit too crazy), but I personally enjoyed every second of Bargain.

The fight for justice starts with a little invitation...
Tumblr media
...because evil is prevalent and vehement.
Here's a reminder that Season 2 of The Fiery Priest is scheduled to air on Friday, November 8, 2024 in South Korea. The Fiery Priest is the second of Park Jae-Beom's "Justice Trilogy" as it's frequently called (Chief Kim aka Good Manager ; The Fiery Priest; Vincenzo in order of release) and I would love an invitation into screenwriter Park's brain because his creations are so very very good.
On this blog, I frequently talk about movies but dramas, specifically "kdramas," are another delight and from script to director(s) to casting to cinematography and soundtrack, this trilogy holds a special place for me. I think I could write a novel on the themes and scenes in Vincenzo alone. When not only the titular character but the entire cast keeps you watching, you know it's the good stuff. So happy all three shows were twenty episodes and didn't follow the more current trend of shortening the season. The slow character development enabled the viewer to discover individual stories without muddying up the plot too much.
I'm looking forward to watching as soon as Season 2 of The Fiery Priest is available for me to view, and if you haven't seen any of the above shows, I recommend them!
*Pictured above: Kim Nam-Gil as Father Kim (top) and Song Joong-Ki as Vincenzo. Two unconventional "heroes" fighting the good fight.

Here are my thoughts on each contestant so far (spoilers up to ep. 9). These are just my impressions of their roles in the limited context of the show, not as actual people.
- Lee Si-Won: The mad scientist! My favorite, though not necessarily my favorite to win. Sharp, strong-willed but loyal, and most of all, persistent. She and Seok-jin have incredible synergy. If the competition comes down to the two of them, though, I feel like she wouldn't have the heart to beat him...
- Ha Seok-jin: ...while he would have no such qualms. Crafty, independent, and observant, a real genius when it comes to scheming to an almost scary extent. He's definitely most at home in a "villain" role where he doesn't have to protect anyone. He and Si-Won give me the vibes of a natural talent and a hard worker teaming up instead of fighting over their differences.
- Seungkwan: Actually pretty interesting. Whether he intended to or not, he's the only one who has managed to strike a balance between being a threatening contestant and an exploitable one. He leans more towards the latter, but not to the extent that people are targeting him. In fact, everyone likes him a lot. That's an idol for you.
- Guillaume: Just smart in general. It was especially sly of him to play dumb throughout the first game. Seemed like an all-rounder. It wasn't his or really anyone's fault he got eliminated. His team just had to decide on a strategy early on that they weren't able to change later.
- Kim Dong-Jae: Very similar to Seok-jin. Schemers, the two of them. The main difference is that while Seok-jin is fine with keeping a tight circle or even flying solo, Dong-jae wanted to build trust with others. His fatal mistake during Secret Number was not committing to either closing ranks or cutting off contact with Seok-jin and Si-Woo. I'm very interested in what the writing test for this show was like, for him to be one of the two to get a perfect score.
- Lee Hye-sung: She didn't get to do much. I like that she trusted Dong-jae, but she was too trusting. I think she should've stood her ground and compared numbers with Yu-min first, then leveraged that information to ensure Dong-jae's loyalty. That might have helped Yu-min feel secure enough to not betray them later.
- Seo Yu-min: Way too dependent on others, though she seems to have taken the results of Secret Number to heart. She has the right idea about taking advantage of other people's sympathy for her, but the helpless act only works in the long term if it's just an act and not, you know, real. Also, Seungkwan has already filled the niche she wants. She should make more use of her greatest asset: Joon-bin, who clearly still feels guilty about Secret Number.
- Park Kyeong-rim: She's so sweet. If I had to choose, she's the one I'd want to meet in real life the most. But in the show, she's way too much of an open book and bleeding heart. I like that she's more cautious of Yu-min after Laying Grass, though that just means she'll divert more of her attention to helping Seungkwan.
- Kwak Joon-bin: He's funny because he talks a big game about wanting to turn traitor and cause chaos, but he's a huge softie who refuses to exploit weaker contestants. I don't think he's crafty enough to take down stronger opponents either. He's proven himself as an active participant in the games, which is really all it takes to not be marked as exploitable even if your most of his ideas go unused. But people don't trust him because of his big ol' mouth.
- Seo Dong-joo: Also smart in general, bold. The Si-won to Orbit's Seok-jin, kind of. She's more of Orbit's second-in-command than his partner, though that's only because Orbit is that much of a force of nature while she's content to play a supporting role. She's pretty loyal to Orbit, but she doesn't care that much about the others and only helps them because he does. Even then, she's been having doubts about him since Zoo. I think she could go head to head with Orbit if it comes down to the two of them.
- Orbit: Love him or hate him (looking at you, Si-won), he's incredibly influential. He's so much of a leader that it's kind of stifling. Extremely smart in a technical way, the best at coming up with group strategies based on actual game theory. This complements his "protect the weak" ideology, though that has been breaking down. He can't save everyone, even at the expense of the other team. I think he first realized that after Zoo and then truly accepted it during Laying Grass.
- Cho Yeon-woo: She was too passive, exploitable. But while Seungkwan is loveable and Yu-min is pitiable, she never found an approach that would make someone hesitate about targeting her. I wish she got the chance to show her strengths, but Seok-jin's robbery was frankly a brilliant move so I'm not that mad. I think she should've cozied up to Si-won more, especially by telling her about the safe. Seok-jin would've disapproved but Si-won would've stood up for her.

Kwak Jae-soo: Yang Hyun-min Interview
Tumblr media
(google translate)
Q. Please tell us your thoughts on the end of 'My Sweet Mobster'. A: It's been a really hateful() two months! (Those who watched the drama will know why ) I sincerely thank everyone in Korea and abroad who loved our drama!
Q. Was there anything you focused on internally or externally while acting as 'Kwak Jae-soo'? A: Internally, the part I focused on was the character's boundaries. I think the most difficult part was to draw the line between showing affection, consideration, and a favorable disposition while being a rough gangster. I think that was because it was difficult, so I trusted the director and acted. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the director. Externally, the makeup and costume teams did a great job, so I didn't have to worry about it. Thank you to the makeup and costume teams.
Q. If you were to define the charm of 'Kwak Jae-soo' in one word, what would it be? A: I think it's perfectly covering ignorance with cheerfulness.
Q. As the story progresses, Jae-soo's thoughts on Eun-ha seem to have been different. What kind of existence was Eun-ha to Jae-soo? A: At first, she was a rat's drop who was an 'uncomfortable thorn', because of the prejudice that she was an unconditional enemy, but with her warmth and kindness in treating brother and us sincerely, the rat's drop has become an indispensable existence to all of us and to Jae-soo.
Q. Jae-soo has extraordinary chemistry with various characters in the drama. How was it working with the actors you acted with?
A: It was really, really great, and great! I would like to thank everyone, without exception. I sincerely thank all the actors who worked with me and who accepted my lacking acting.
Q. I'm also curious about the episodes on set. A: It was a set where I laughed so much that I was hungry, laughed so much that I made NGs, and laughed so much that I was happy. Every single day of filming was an episode.
Q. What was the most memorable scene or line in 'Playful Woman'? A: There are many, but I think it would be 'really hate' as I mentioned in the first question. It was a line that I never expected would be liked this much.
Q. 'Kwak Jae-soo' from 'Playful Woman' also received a lot of love. What would be the most memorable comment or reaction from people around you?
A: There are still comments like 'Jae-soo hates so much'
Q. Lastly, please say a word to the viewers who have been watching 'My Sweet Mobster'. A: I sincerely thank you for loving 'My Sweet Mobster'. We will come back with a work and role that will not disappoint you as much as you have loved us. By any chance, writer and director! Playful Woman Season 2, let's go?

Family Matters
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Family Matters (2024, South Korea)
Directors: Kim Gok & Kim Sun
Writer: Kim Jung Min
Mini-review:
Started this because of the cast and... that's basically the main reason why I finished it. The last two episodes were really good but, before that, I spent a lot of time just scratching my head. It felt like the show was simply setting things up for what's to come, so it never gave enough information to properly tie its many plot threads, nor did it follow a clear logic. And it was pretty obvious that a lot of stuff was left on the cutting room floor in order to reduce the initial 8-episode order. Furthermore, its sense of humor was very hit-or-miss; sometimes I laughed out loud and others I was like "wtf". Still, the cast is fantastic, and like I said before, I enjoyed the final episodes a lot, so I would probably come back for a second season of Family Matters.

The battle in the basement of the apartment building, where we see Nam-san use a shotgun to blast his way through some of the doctor’s ‘enhanced’ individuals, is a total exhilarating blast. Ma Dong-seok has been a powerhouse for most of his career post Train to Busan, but he sends people flying whenever he throws his fist or pulls the trigger. _Badland Hunters_ also has to break a record for most decapitations in a film. **Full review:** https://bit.ly/bdlndhntr MovieGuys: Badland Hunters does something things well, others just passably. Action is wall to wall and well choreographed.Special effects are excellent. Characterisations are solid if predictable and the acting is not to be sniffed at. However, the story is unremarkable, with a climax that feels, well, anti climatic. In summary, an okay but hardly exceptional watch, that would have benefited from more creativity on the storytelling front. Ritesh Mohapatra: “Badland Hunters: A Visually Striking Action Spectacle with Narrative Shortcomings” In this post-apocalyptic action thriller, Badland Hunters, while suffering from a repetitive and clichéd plot and uninteresting characters, excels in stunning hand-to-hand choreography and scintillating action set pieces. The film benefits greatly from the expertise of its veteran stunt coordinator turned director, known for his work on Train to Busan. Commendable world-building, visionary concepts, and excellent VFX are hindered by conventional writing. The short, crisply edited runtime avoids unnecessary elements. Don Lee’s exceptional portrayal of Nam-san, with exhilarating action sequences, overshadows the film’s narrative weaknesses, making it a guiltily satisfying popcorn-worthy entertainer, particularly for adrenaline enthusiasts. 2017 SBS Drama Awards - December 31, 2017
Best Supporting Actress (Park Jin-Joo)
Hae-Sung hayata döndüğünde kardeşleri; Sung Young-Joon (Yoon Sun-Woo) doktor, Sung Young-In(Kim Ga-Eun) mağaza görevlisi, Sung Hae-Cheol(Kwak Dong-Yeon) serseri, Sung Soo-Ji(Kim Hye-Jun) ise öğrencidir.
Her bölümü izlerken IQ seviyemin düştüğünü hissettim. Ve salağa anlatır gibi konuşmaları…  Cümlenin başında ortasında sonunda, gerçek anlamda tek bir cümlede 3 kere isim söylemelerine inanılmaz takıldım. İzlerken çıldırdım.
Son olarak oyunculardan biraz bahsedeyim. Kwak Dong-Yeon’a Vincenzo dizisinden beri bayılırım. Her an o göz yaşını akıtmaya hazır duruşu takdir edilesi. Cinderella and the four knights dizisinin parlak dudaklı oyuncusu.

Tumblr media
Korean Air's Han Jung-yong, Lim Dong-hyuk combine for 26 points Korea Express wins 29 points in Burkina Faso
Korean Air extends its winning streak to five games with a sweep of Samsung Fire.
Korean Air swept Samsung Fire 3-0 (25-20 25-19 25-22) in the men's Dodram 2023-2024 V-League at Gyeyang Gymnasium in Incheon on Friday.
Riding a five-game winning streak, Korean Air (6-2, 19 points) pulled within striking distance of first-place Woori Card (7-1, 20 points).
Jeong Jung-yong (14 points) and Lim Dong-hyuk (12 points) led the way. Jung added three blocking points and one service ace. Lim Dong-hyuk had a very high attacking success rate of 60%.
Korean Air's team attack percentage was also high at 57.57%. The defense was also solid from the first set.
Despite losing their second straight match, Samsung Fire (5-3, 14 points) remained in third place.
Samsung Fire's foreign player Yosubani scored 14 points but had an offensive success rate in the low 30s. She also had 12 turnovers.
Korean Air dominated from the start of the game. Led by Jeong Jung-yong, Korean Air scored three straight points with a back-attack by Kwak Seung-seok and a block by Kim Kyu-min to take a 7-4 lead.
Korean Air then took the lead for good at 18-16 with back-to-back kills from Jung Jeong-yong before taking advantage of a Yosubani service error at 24-20 to take the first set.
Samsung Fire lost the first set helplessly due to Jupo Yosubani's poor play.
The second set followed a similar pattern. At 3-2, Cho Jae-young's fastball and Kwak Seung-seok's block made the difference. Korean Air extended its lead with a variety of attacks and widened the gap at 18-13 with a quick opener from Lincoln.
Korean Air pulled away from Samsung Fire late in the second set with kills from Lim Dong-hyuk, Lincoln, and Jung Jeong-yong.
With the victory in hand, Korean Air took the lead early in the third set with a quick offense that included fastballs and quick opens. They went on an 8-3 run and raised their opponents' spirits.
Samsung Fire fought back and tied the score at 14-14 with Yosubani's serve and attack.
Korean Air, however, capitalized on Yosubani's back-to-back errors to widen the gap to 17-14. At 24-22, Korean Air ended the match with another service error.
Samsung Fire self-destructed with 26 errors, 10 more than Korean Air.
Meanwhile, Korean Air surpassed 32,000 set wins for the first time in its history.
The women's team won 3-1 (25-23 25-22 18-25 26-24) against Pepper Savings Bank at the Gimcheon Indoor Gymnasium.
Foreign player Vukiric led the way with 29 points, while Tanacha and Jeon Sae-yan contributed 16 and 10 points, respectively.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for DOT (2W-6D-9P), which moved up to fifth place, pushing IBK (3W-5D-8P) to sixth, and also avenged a first-round loss to Pepper Savings Bank.
Trailing 23-24 in the fourth set, the road construction company made a deuce with a timed attack by Bae Yuna, then ended the match with a service ace by Jeon Sae-yan and an open attack by Tanacha.
Pepper Savings Bank (2-6, 5-5) remained at the bottom of the standings.
Pepper Savings Bank's foreign players Yasmin (29 points), Park Jung-ah (17 points), and Lee Han-bi (12 points) struggled but could not prevent the loss.
