Mondstadt Girls and an Inazuman Deserter!Reader - Amber, Rosaria & Eula x Male!Reader

A/N: A bit specific to be sure, but I hope it's still entertaining! C/W: Some mentions of frontline hardships and horrors.

There weren't any early warning signs to what was about to befall Inazuma. 

It was as if the Almighty Shogun, so beloved by her people, one day decided to pay her subjects back by trampling on their ambitions. And so Inazumans were forced to, willingly or less so, give up their Visions. Not all went smoothly, however. An obvious backlash was what Narukami’s outrageous demand to hand over Watatsumi’s Visions had been met with, escalating into an invasion in a matter of days. 

At first, the small but professional army of your homeland managed to strike at Watatsumi's unprepared shores, but excited news reports of rapid progress soon died down. Watatsumi's resistance was ferocious, which in tandem with the enlistment of every Vision Bearer in the small state forced the shogunate’s troops back. Not only did they defend their home island, but also succeeded in taking the fight to the bordering Yashiori Island. Unofficial channels reported mounting losses, and with mounting losses came the dreaded mobilization. 

The recruiters and state officials chanted the word “defend!” at anyone who would listen. But what ethical merit had it when you were the aggressors? 

As a male in his prime years, you were one of the first to get drafted when things got rough for the Shogunate. The punishment for evading this duty was harsh - multiple years of prison and unavoidable social ostracism was what awaited you if you were to refuse the God of Thunder's call. With only 24 hours to pack, you took only the necessary items and said your goodbyes for what could very well be your final time. You were off to the frontlines, fighting a war you never asked for and had no business supporting. 

What awaited you was hell. 

With the competent commanders either dead, wounded or having deserted altogether, the military was condemned to fight under inexperienced and cowardly commanders. Soon the “meat assaults”, as your comrades called them, would become the staple of military tactics. There was scarce food, scarce medical assistance, intelligence, scouting, ammunition and everything necessary to fight, and your comrades were melting before your eyes. No friendship lasted - sooner or later a “category second load” was all that you were left with. Bodies were everywhere, rotting under artillery fire in the trenches, on the fields, beaches and forests with nobody to collect them, let alone give them a burial. You lived among them, getting weaker and sicker with each day. The stench was overpowering, barring you from keeping anything in your stomach - not that you had anything to eat but dry crackers and cat soup anyway. The wounded lay scattered among your unit, slowly bleeding out and succumbing to their injuries with few chances of being rescued and tended to. With the losses mounting, you soon came to regret your skill at avoiding suicidal assaults. You were surrounded with homeless and criminals forced into uniform. With the latter came prison discipline as rank integrity and morale decayed. You found your “comrades” to change from fellow citizens to murderers, rapists, robbers, smugglers, bandits - criminals both petty and serious. Humiliations, beatings, lynchings and animalisation became an integral part of your daily life as you found yourself amongst them. Until you couldn't take it anymore. 

You fled. You deserted your post, cast your weapon into the sea, burned your uniform and spent all your savings on bribing locals to smuggle you back to Ritou where you took off with the Krux towards the mainland. 

Whatever you faced there would be a far better life than one of chaos and decay on the frontlines. 

You survived, yes. You made it through hell with your life, but it didn't mean you were proud of it. In the eyes of your people, you have become a coward, a traitor and an unworthy man. Would others share their outlook?

Your first encounter with a certain Outrider wasn't long after you've got yourself a job. As an equipment technician for the Knights of Favonius, you were charged with keeping her and the others’ weapons and armor in top condition. 

Amber made quite the impression on you when she came crashing through the balcony and into the workshop, scattering tools, weapons and outfits across the entire room. She knocked over a candle while bashfully apologizing, setting some fabric on fire. Despite the rough landing, the mess and the arson, her genuine smile and bright disposition sparked a true wildfire in your heart, one she - as you would come to know - shared. 

All was well for a few months. Amber didn't take interest in politics, placing the war outside of her attention. She did once mention it, but stopped at simply wishing your family safety. She didn't pay much attention to your scars - she had many of her own from the various accidents she had and adventures she regularly embarked on. You having some too didn't really strike her as unusual. 

What Amber did notice was your attitude towards certain topics. Wherever her service in the Knights or war in general came up, you turned rather pessimistic and dismissive. Phrases akin to “we’ll die anyway” or “we are replaceable” would frequently reach her ears. This, combined with your general dislike towards war-related topics and scarce - if any - sharing of your past in Inazuma gave her more than enough clues. She quickly put two and two together and, preferring to stay genuine, asked you outright. 

After hearing about what got you in Mondstadt, she didn't know what to say. She just sat there, blinking, her mouth slightly agape. In her defense, nothing could have prepared Amber for a story about sleeping amongst rotting corpses or hearing another soldier cry for help for hours until he finally bled out. 

It's no wonder you wanted out. Nobody deserves this treatment for risking their lives for their god. What kind of god Raiden Shogun even is? One who strips her followers of their Visions and sends her soldiers to fight in these conditions, without even bothering to show up and support them? Your desertion, no, your escape is fully justified. If anything you should be proud to have made such a bold decision, risking execution if your despicable superiors were to find out. 

For Amber, hearing you doubt yourself as man was an honest surprise. In a situation as inhuman as that, how could you even consider societal expectations? Only people truly separated from reality would call you a wimp. These people are likely women or those fortunate enough to never experience actual war first hand, so you shouldn't bother about their opinions.

As for herself, well… Amber knows that, as an Outrider, she will be sent to the frontlines should the need arise. But she rests easy, knowing that offensive warfare isn't something very likely to be in Mondstadt’s future. Even if there will be, Amber is sure that it will happen only if absolutely necessary and in good cause. 

Amber: You've been through things that no man should ever experience. You are very brave to have said ‘enough’ and left that hell behind, no matter the risk. Now, my brave warrior, you deserve to rest - I swore to defend every citizen of Mondstadt, including you. If you could, leave the defending to me! I’ll make sure that you won't ever have to fight again! Outrider's promise!

When you arrived in Mondstadt, you were obviously placed in Rosaria’s sights. Every outlander that takes residence in the city must be investigated, as per her orders. There wasn’t a lot to go off, as she found. You didn’t speak Mondstadtian, only the universal language of Teyvat. Your face was slightly different from the locals, hinting at a South-Eastern origin. You were of a rather sturdier stature, suggesting your previous occupation involved physical tasks. After a few weeks of witnessing absolutely ordinary behavior from you, she just tagged you as a blue collar immigrant and called it a day. 

The war left you hurt, but it did leave you with some skills too. You were in generally fit physical form - after eating up, that is - and more than remembered the training you received back in Inazuma. Being practical, you decided to start with a simple guard job. As it happened, the leader of the nation left his city to embark on a crusade of sorts, leaving the local force - The Knights of Favonius as you came to know them - very short handed. This meant that you were quickly accepted first as a squire and then promoted to a regular knight after a few months of work and some exams. 

Nobody wanted to be on guard duty. Except for you, that is. You were tired of killing, tired of constantly being on alert and risking your neck every second. You were thankful for the opportunity to lean back and pretend to work while still getting the money and the credit for standing in for someone else. And that’s how your life flowed for the most part. 

The first time Rosaria actually spoke to you in person came when she was outside the cathedral for her usual smoke break. Normally she would smoke inside the church, but that day she wasn’t in the mood to put up with the whining of that one young nun who would always make it out as if it was a big issue. When she reached into her pockets, as luck would have it, she couldn’t locate her cigarette pouch. When she started heading home, annoyed, she stumbled upon you, casually smoking in a secluded spot. It was a habit you caught from your comrades - the stress had to be resolved in some way, after all. When Rosaria came up to you and asked for one of your cigarettes, you gladly shared - and that’s how the relationship started. 

The closer you got to each other, the more interested Rosaria became in your past. You never spoke of it, and she could tell it was not the most pleasant of topics for you. She understood that - Rosaria herself disliked talking about her “was”, after all. But she couldn’t stop her curiosity from asking the questions - where did you get all these scars? From monsters? As if a guy like you would succumb to some Hilichurls. 

She would come to learn the truth one Friday night. Both of you had just a little too much to drink, resulting in the alcohol loosening your tongue. You went on and on about what happened to you in Inazuma, and Rosaria managed to remember enough of it to piece together a coherent backstory in the morning.

It was a story like many others she heard throughout her life. A mistreated soldier, fighting for a cause he didn’t support, escaping back to freedom. The recurrence of stories like yours didn’t make it any less tragic, of course. But that’s just it, no? It happened, and there was nothing you could do about it anymore. It was fate’s dark design, and no matter how much you would try, you couldn’t change it. The right course of action was to make peace with the past and move on. 

Much to her surprise, however, you didn’t seem to take the reasonable route this time. Your choice of desertion seemed to weigh you down. You were frequently referring to yourself as a traitor and a coward, both of which Rosaria would find amusing. Because you were neither. 

Rosaria: “Ah, really now? This “coward” you speak of somehow had the courage to go against the will of his god, just as this “traitor” saw the so-called conquest for what it was - a civil war. You refused to accept tyranny, you refused being treated by your god as some nameless cannon fodder. More - not only did you resist and escape with your life, but you also recovered. You rolled your sleeves up and returned to civilian life, determined to regain what was taken away from you. This is a feat no ordinary man is capable of, Y/N.”

After an entire year in hell, there was no chance you would be willing to ever find yourself near a weapon anymore. Not professionally at least. You needed a job to keep yourself afloat, and you decided that the simpler, the better. You decided to do as many have - you took a loan and started your bakery. 

It was a difficult task at first, but you managed to get a foothold, and it was fairly simple from then on. Was it monotonous? Sure, but that’s what you signed up for. You decided that routine would do you good. 

During your uneventful but still busy days, you would turn your attention towards the streets and the people that walked them. One particular, blue haired woman caught your attention. She was clearly a member of the Knights, but unlike the others she wasn’t very popular among the people of Mondstadt, so much so that other shopkeepers oftentimes refused to sell her any of their wares. Was she a criminal of some sort? An outcast? You asked your fellow store owner for a reason, and it absolutely baffled you. 

It turned out she was Eula Lawrence, a woman from a tyrannical clan that once ruled the city. When you asked a few knights that did their shopping at your store about what kind of a person she was, your suspicions turned out to be true. She has been hurt by her family name and her somewhat distant attitude, on top of her way of speaking of course. 

When she came to you the first time, she asked if you also didn’t want her to visit your shop. Her face betrayed genuine surprise as you handed her a loaf of fresh bread, but she was even more suspicious when you refused to take her money. There was something very unusual about your attitude, so starkly different from how others treated her. 

Nonetheless, she accepted the gift. She accepted it the second time. And the third. And the fourth, and the fifth and over and over and over again. The profit decrease of a few loaves of bread was negligible, but Eula still insisted on paying for her food after being given so much. You still gave her a discount, though. 

Over time you started getting along better and better. You started looking out for her in more ways as well, getting her medication when she was sick or getting her back to the Knights of Favonious barracks when she went overboard with alcohol. It was a bad habit, and you tried distracting her from her worries with offers to go out, even if she wanted to drink - at least she wouldn’t drink alone. 

This quality time brought you closer, progressing up to the point of you inviting her to live in the same home. Eula obviously welcomed the chance to take her living conditions up a notch, as the barracks weren’t really a nice place to live in. You were overjoyed at her accepting the proposal, but anxiety lingered in your mind - how long would it be before she found out? And what would happen when she did? Eula was a woman of honor, a proud soldier with a well developed moral code and the determination to stick to it. How would she look at you when she found out you were nothing but a pathetic deserter? 

Unbeknownst to you, the Spindrift Knight has long since figured that something is up with you. No ordinary baker would have a body so rugged as yours, and you seemed aware of the fact - whenever she invited you for her ice baths, you would politely decline. On hot days you still wore a more revealing shirt, letting her see and examine your scars discreetly. She had seen many of such marks before, she herself had many, and it was easy to guess that they were man made. Your habits also supported her suspicions - she found a dagger under your pillow and a dusty spear in your closet, though she never saw you use either. 

One day, Eula decided enough was enough - if she were to love you with all the honesty of her heart, you would have to be genuine as well. She approached you with a stern expression and a single demand - “spar with me”. You accepted, being uncertain at first but later relaxing and giving it your all. You thought that a woman such as her wouldn’t be impressed with weakness, and so you called on all your experience and knowledge. What you didn’t realize was that Eula kept a close eye on you and concluded that you had to have any sort of military training to fight like you do. You still lost the fight though. The captain called you out and, not wanting to keep pretending anymore, you told her everything. 

Eula was, above all, pleased that you were able to be honest with her (and that she figured everything out correctly, of course). Admitting to such a decision required bravery, just as escaping the horrid conditions you were fighting in. Facing the risks involved with avoiding detection and sailing to a whole new nation, filled with foreign designs and speaking in a foreign language was a true testament to your courage. 

Second, far stronger, came the disgust. How could any soldier be treated as deplorably as the men of Inazuma were? No food, no water, no supplies and no help are the rewards for putting your lives on the line and taking the lives of others? Just the thought makes Eula’s teeth grit to this very day. To think that all these neglected aspects of planning might as well have killed you…

She didn’t need time to consider if she loved you now that she knew of your past. You were still the man that gave her bread that one day, still the man that faced monsters with her, side by side, still the patient and caring man that touched her heart. If anything, knowing of the extent of your bravery and determination only made her admire you more.

Eula: “The right to live isn’t something exclusive to women, children and the elderly, you know. Every man has the same right to not die in a war as a woman. Not only those that volunteered deserve respect - any soul that carried the burden of war deserves acknowledgment for their bravery. What you had been forced into was not war - it was a crime. And for that I will have vengeance on that god of yours, I swear it.

Bwaaah!! Kai and Nya designs for my au!!

I always loved Nya as Samurai-X, so in my au she gets to be a Samurai again, as a treat (Pixal still gets to be there as a Samurai too, don't worry 👍)

While these are mainly based off of their original season 7 outfits, I went a little bit farther on changing Kai's because I had a Specific Idea in mind that will sorta influence how the twins (specifically Acronix) react to him because he is Ray's son, along with Kai's own conflicted feelings over his parents

Also yeah!! In my au, during the first serpentine war Acronix and Krux were good friends with Ray and Maya. Which makes everything that happened later hurt alot more, unfortunately

You can tell the writers didn’t really have a plan/explanation for why Chen didn’t have Wind or Water despite apparently needing all of the elements for his spell. I know YEARS later they eventually came up with an explanation via Wojira, but if we’re being real from a Doylist perspective, they just could not be bothered to explain it. Despite Water being established in the very same season as Tournament of Elements, and Morro planned later that year, even showing up in the last second of S4!

Between this and the show being vague on how Morro got to the Cursed Realm -Tommy had to explain in a tweet that dying after doing bad things also qualifies you for it- and I honestly kinda wish/headcanoned that Clouse sent him there. Think about it…

Morro goes off to prove he’s the Green Ninja, leaving Wu. Chen hears that the Master of Wind is a lone child and realizes how easy it’ll be to claim the first element he needs. He and Clouse corner Morro, steal his power, and then banish him to the Cursed Realm to hide the evidence.

When Kai destroys the Staff of Elements, the power of Wind is released and crosses dimensional boundaries to return to Morro; Shortly afterwards, Clouse is banished to the Cursed Realm, allowing Morro to swap places with him. He watches everything that goes on from afar, gathering intel, hence his brief appearance at the end of S4.

As for Water… The writers teased that Chen knew what happened to Ray and Maya. And then never really followed up on it despite Tommy having a pretty sensible explanation in mind.

Let’s put it this way; Kai is the first child of Ray and Maya and he gets Ray’s power. He doesn’t know how to use it. Next comes Nya. Maya chooses to hold onto her power for now so that someone experienced and well trained can protect the family with it; Once Kai is old enough to use his powers, she’ll pass hers onto Nya.

Alas, Krux targets the two. He strikes a deal with Chen, who planted the idea in his and Acronix’s mind to take power for themselves; In exchange for sending his minions to help Krux capture Ray and Maya, Krux will allow Chen to take Maya’s element of Water for himself. Likewise, Chen gives Krux the Vermillion eggs he found in exchange for this boon. Everything goes as planned, Chen takes Maya’s element and then Krux holds both parents hostage and forces them to make armor for his new Vermillion army.

This is how Chen knows what happened to Ray and Maya, and explains his claim about them betraying the alliance by working for Krux (even if under duress). When Kai destroys the Staff of Elements, Water is released and doesn’t return to Maya, instead entering Nya because it was always meant to go to her.

This explains why Wu never trained Nya as a ninja until S5; She straight up didn’t HAVE an elemental power until the latter half of S4. And amidst all of the other chaos, Nya has to grapple with some mysterious element having bonded with her for some reason; In the end, she doesn’t have time to figure out or master her new element, so she sticks to being Samurai X for the rest of S4. Once Chen is dealt with, only then does she have the space to start exploring this new power and the implications of her mother’s power having been held by Chen, who claimed to know Maya and Ray’s whereabouts. S4 already set up a couple of story elements that would be expanded upon in S5, what’s another one?

…This doesn’t count for Time of course, but that was only added two years later. So it’s a bit more understandable of a retcon, whereas the writers knew about Water and Wind when writing S4 and still didn’t bother to explain it. Idk maybe Time isn’t actually an element but a ‘power’ (hence it being split into four powers across two masters), and Acronix and Krux’s beef stemmed partially from wanting Time to be recognized as an element on equal standing with the rest of the alliance, especially after contributing so much to the war effort. Being left out because they weren’t viewed as ‘real’ Elemental Masters created an inferiority complex that Chen took advantage of. Maybe the Hands of Time connected with Skylor’s mother over Amber also being dismissed as not a real element, and like them she listened to Chen, which led to her having Skylor with him.

I Rewrite The Climax Of Hands Of Time By Just Changing ONE Plot Point.

You know how Kai had been playing detective for the entire season and realized that his parents were traitors to the Elemental Resistance, and therefore pretty twisted people?

And then in canon it was revealed they were good all along?

Well, here's the change: Kai was RIGHT.

Ray and Maya ARE alive, but they are NOT good people, and they work for the Time Twins at their own will.

Why would they do that?

The Time Twin's ideals of "control time control everything" wore on them because their desire was to remain in their present fame as Elemental Masters. And the twins, especially Krux, were good friends of theirs. However, it broke them to be fighting against friends, and they felt like their past relationships were broken because of it. It pained them to make the blades.

Then not only did they fade from relevance due to fatigue from making the blades, fatigue that would plague their bodies for the rest of their lives, but they also had children. Which dented their ideal time.

Yes, Kai was not intended to be born. But once he was, Maya had the sympathy to have another kid so they could live on in their ideals. This is why she turns around in Seabound.

Then it was revealed to them that Krux was alive and in disguise, and he told them he knew how to get their Elemental Master fame back, and undo what the creation of the time blades did for them. So they made the bold decision to cling to the past and go with Krux.

They believed that as long as the time machine worked, no harm would be done to Kai and Nya, as they would be able to go back in time and be parents later.

Again, they're supposed to be bad people for this.

They're traitors. They work for Krux to make this time machine.

Kai learns this the same way he did in the original, but we also have more baby Kai and Nya flashbacks where we see not just the good memories of his parents, but also the trauma he endured as an abandoned child. How exactly he coped with losing them suddenly. How he put himself in an adult position in the house. His growing hostility towards the rest of the town (their shop is far off from the town after all). Him putting himself to work. His sacrifices for his sister, like his place in school or food. And importantly, how Nya wouldn't allow Kai to destroy himself like that, and she gained her own independence and responsibilities against his wishes, to save him. (He did say in Season one that he spent his whole life trying to protect her and he was just now realizing she never needed it)

Ray and Maya abandoning their kids left a ton of past trauma that they cling to. They're both clinging to the past. Nya is clinging to her past identity as Samurai X and her bond is with P.I.X.A.L and she learns to accept her present role and let it go. Kai is ALL ABOUT honor and the legacy he THOUGHT of his parents. As a blacksmith. As a Master of Fire. As a savior to Ninjago. He's all about doing what they did, and doing it better.

So when he learns that they're actually BAD role models, him asking if they're destined to turn evil, actually makes sense.

Then in what he deems justice, Kai decides to be dishonest with his sister, and ATTEMPT to assassinate his dad (he fails). He's clinging to the past. (Obviously Nya stops him from assassinating his family, because that’s wrong and that’s a horrible thing to do.)

And this clinginess to the past is what makes Kai and Nya get caught by the Time Twins.

In this scene, Ray and Maya PRETEND to be the sympathetic kidnapped parent that did everything to see his kids again. (He's not lying when he said he did it to see his kids again, but it's not in the way they think. Technically)

Their story about how they were kidnapped in the original is a LIE.

They use the opportunity to 'take in' Kai and Nya, and they pretend to be on their side in finding the Reversal Blade (The Time Twins aren't with them, at least by Kai and Nya's knowledge)

NYA is the one who is against this, as she does not believe anything. Because she's the kid with no memories of her family, and she's the independent one, and she's already learned the moral I'm going for with Samurai X.

They get the time blade, they're ready to defeat the Time Twins and get Wu back...

And then Ray and Maya betray them. Krux and Acronix were tracking them the whole time, and they arrive to claim the blade. This is where the kids learn the TRUTH.

And Ray and Maya frame it as though this is a GOOD THING for their family, and the kids are the ones in the wrong. If they can make this time machine, not only would they be glorious like they were in the past, but they could be proper parents to their children and raise them as the perfect Elemental Masters they were meant to be.

Yeah, become good parents by abandoning your kids. It's supposed to be MESSED UP.

Kai and Nya refuse this ideologies, because they're traitors, and they get ditched. Ray even claims to Kai that he is a failure of a Master of Fire, and when they time travel, THAT Kai will be so much better.

This leads to another point I need to make with all of this that is true about the original too:

Kai was very neglectful of the other ninja ever since his fight with Krux in the museum. He had been so fixated on the past and finding out the mystery of his parents that even the other ninja got annoyed by it. He didn't talk to them, he didn't listen to them, he didn't even care about his role as a ninja.

This is where, as the siblings are ditched and trying to get back, Kai APOLOGIZES for this, realizing he was wrong in this behavior, he was a bad brother, and he caused this disaster.

And Nya not only forgives him, but reminds him that the reason she never looked up to their parents was because she HAD a parent to raise her, and that was Kai. Had it not been for each other, they would have never gotten here, let alone survived long enough for Wu to come find them.

So Ray and Maya are bad parents. So what? That's the past. It doesn't matter now. What matters is what they want to do to stop them from destroying their REAL family.

So they follow the Time Twins back, Ray and Maya are with them, and that final fight proceeds. The kids not only participate but get a chance to confront their parents again.

Ray plays the 'you don't want to hurt your family' card.

And Kai claims. "You're right. I have a family. They're the ninja."

Doesn't matter who his birth father is, right NOW, his family is the ninja. That's who raised him. Not Ray.

It HURTS Ray that his kid thinks like that, and is SARCASTICALLY THANKING HIM for ditching a five year old child and his little sister in a forge.

When Krux and Acronix betray their original plan and decide to go far into the future, Ray and Maya feel betrayed as that's not what they wanted, but they get knocked out by the twins when in the machine.

Blah blah, Kai Nya and Wu get caught in the time vortex, and this is their final fight against the twins.

KAI is the one who gets the final blow on Krux. The man who influenced his parents, and destroyed the happy childhood he and Nya could've had, and was also a traitor to a resistance he stood for proudly.

Krux asks why he'd ruin his chances at a happier past.

Kai claims that his past does not matter anymore. His focus is on who he is RIGHT NOW. And RIGHT NOW, he is the Master of Fire, an older brother, and a loyal savior to the Elemental Resistance, and he's fighting for the future of everyone he loves. Something a self absorbed power hungry maniac like Krux would NEVER understand.

He gets the last blow on Krux, and Krux falls out of the machine, lost in time. (We COULD see what happens to him. Maybe that's a Randall Monsters Inc situation.)

The time machine is breaking down, and they're nearing the present, so they have to go back and jump off the machine now.

And out of sympathy, they take their unconscious parents with them and save their lives. Despite everything, it would be clinging to the past to act like they're too far gone.

So they're all ready to jump off, and at the last minute to avenge his fallen brother, ACRONIX GRABS WU AND PULLS HIM BACK IN THE MACHINE.

Kai and Nya try to save Wu, but they lose their grip, and can only watch as Wu gets lost in time with Acronix.

The ninja get back to the present and reunite with the team. Wu is lost in time. They don't have the Reversal Time Blade in this version, because future seasons never use it, so there's no harm in cutting that.

As for Ray and Maya, they regain consciousness when they're back in the present. And the ninja arrest them.

So for the Oni Trilogy, they are in jail. That's why we don't hear from them.

This is actually going to take us to Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitsu.

I'm going to say that during them running around looking for something to do, Kai get an offer to pay bail for Ray and Maya, who were serving their time up till that point, and they want to try to be better parents.

Kai does not take it. He is not emotionally prepared to let them back in his life.

It's part of a narrative that Kai is content with his role as the Fire Ninja and his ninja family, and does not want that to change. But not only are Jay and Nya married now, but crime had stopped, and the ninja are transcending into adulthood, getting some jobs, and starting a new chapter of their lives. Kai and Zane are the ones who can't move on. Zane because of his programming, now that there's no one to protect, and Kai because his life as a ninja is the ONLY life he has, and thus he isn't anything without it.

This would make Kai losing his powers and feeling useless and deciding to not go on the mission make more sense.

(I mean it's still a bad plotline, but it's... less bad?? Idk, that's a whole other rewrite story)

Instead of this random kid coming to Kai, it's another message from his parents. He visits them in jail, because Ray is a Master of Fire, he would know how to get it back.

We could even have Ray explain something about Fire Elementals. That their fire functions though the state of their souls. And as long as the soul is strong, their fire being drained can be undone. (At least, I think it would be a better more lore-related explanation than 'You just gotta believe', which is a massive plot hole on how Elementals work. This too is probably a plot hole, but I try)

And Ray is the one who snaps at Kai, and claims that a Master of Fire who can't fight without their powers is not a Master, they're just pathetic and dumb and they really are useless.

It hurts Kai, they get into an argument because they're hot headed like that, and Ray at one point asks what he needs to do to help Kai be better. Kai says he doesn't NEED to be better, he WAS the best version of himself, and Aspheera took it from him...

Why can't his own father see that clearly enough to WANT HIM?

Ray claims that he DOES want a son. When they agreed to get the Reversal Blade, it was the most alive he ever felt through the years of him working for Krux. Despite Kai being accidental, when he was born, Ray knew that there was a spark in his kid that was precious and warmed his heart. He thought maybe his kid could be better than him... and he already was.

Ray doesn't know much about the other ninja and what they mean to Kai, but if they're the people Kai needs to be around, then Ray can't stop him. After all, Ray doesn't deserve it.

This doesn't allow Kai to forgive his dad, as Kai still leaves Ray in jail, but it touches Kai and it's progress.

Then at the very end of this season, probably one of the last scenes of the season, Kai decides to bail his parents out and reunite with them at the blacksmith shop, and for the first time in years, they can hug it out. Despite everything.

You can have like, one line of dialogue in Prime Empire (doesn't matter when), where Kai tells someone (doesn't matter who) about what happened to his parents. It was awkward, and people in the village weren't open to forgiving them... but they did manage to have a good hiatus in between seasons and work things out. Forgive and forget.

This goes to Seabound, where Kai has been able to forgive his parents, and Nya, who's been absent of interaction in Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitsu, has not. At this point, Maya and Ray are as overbearing as they are in the original, because they want to be good parents. They want to be better. They want to put in that effort.

Nya is not open to that, because again, what happened, she didn't get a chance to forgive them or talk to them, and she's the independent one.

So yeah, Ray and Maya have a redemption arc in this alternate reality. They're garbage parents, started out as such, but decided they wanted to be better when they were snapped into reality what their kids are capable of.

When Nya and Kai were born you were best friends with Maya and Ray. They treated you like family and were so excited to have you meet Kai and Nya.

However, when Krux and Acornix appeared and took the Master of Water and Fire, you were their only family they could rely on.

When they were younger you refused to tell them why your parents left for so long, so all you said was they were on a mission and may not be back for a couple of days.

You wanted to go after them, but their children needed you. You did everything in your power to be the best mother figure you could to them.

They ended up growing up with you, always visiting Four Weapons everyday because Kai would throw tantrums when he wasn't there.

As you watched Kai run into the shop with his little legs, you felt something tug on your pants. Looking down you saw Kai's younger sister, Nya look up at you.

You smiled as you lifts her up and hold her in your arms. Suddenly she points to her pants and you looked down to see a hole near her knee and her dress was stained with grass and dirt.

You called Kai over and as he did you noticed his clothes were dirty and stained as well.

You thought for a moment, getting an idea instantly as you put Nya down.

"How would you guys like to go shopping for new clothes!"

The little girl clapped her hands, while her brother blew a raspberry, crossing his arms.

"Ew. Shopping's for girls." Kai groaned, refering to you and Nya. "I'm a boy, and boy's don't go shopping!"

You chuckled slightly, squatting down to the boy's level.

"Boys are also clean! And you, sir, are a messy little boy." You smiled as you poked his side, causing him to squeak and jump, pushing your finger away.

"Fine. But- only because I don't want to stink!" Kai walked past you as you picked up Nya and followed Kai who thought he could take the lead.

"Sure thing, buddy."

You and the Smith kids reached the mall smack in the middle of Ninjago City. God, who said it would be this busy. You told yourself as you held Kai's hand so he wouldn't run off anywhere, depsite his puling of his arm.

"Okay, where do you two want to go?" You asked the kids, who stayed silent for a moment before you noticed Nya point to a store, "Toy's R Us?" You asked and the gilr nodded, sucking her fingers as she contiued to look at the store.

"I want to go in there!" Kai giggled evily as he pointed to a Hot Topic, "No, you're too young for it." You said quickly as you pulled him into Toy's R Us for Nya.

As you entered you placed Nya in the cart while Kai trailed behind, wanting to go to Hot Topic, not knowing what he'll find in there. Over time he found a couple of toys he seemed to enjoy and liked the trip to this store.

You were able to get Nya a couple of new toys while Kai wanted to buy the whole damn store.

"Y/N! Y/N! Look! Look!" Kai laughed as he pointed at toy car. It was the color red with a orange flame design on the side of it. The wheels were also painted gold.

"I bet it could go really really fast!" Kai spoke as he made car noises and raced around the asile. You smiled softly, picking the toy up and placed it in the cart with Nya who was playing the doll box she had in her hand.

"Okay," You sighed as you were finally able to step out of Toy's R Us, looking at the recpit and chuckled. "You both made me spend over 85$ already?" You joked as Kai shrugged, jumping up and down in the cart.

"Okay, how about we actually get what we came here for?" You asked and Nya giggled, nodding her head as Kai agreed with his sister.

Minutes tured into hours and you were able to but the siblings new sets of clothes for them to put when they got home.

"Do you both like what you go?" You asked, walking out of the mall holding Nya in your arms while you held Kai hand. "Totally!" Kai grinned as he placed on his new sunglasses you bought him.

"I'm glad," You smiled, heading back for home.

As you three got home, Kai quickly ran to use the bathroom while you took your shoes off, locked the door, and placed Nya on the couch while you grabbed the bags and placed them on the kitchen tables.

"Y-Y/N!"

You turned around to see Nya wave a dress in the air. "You lil'sneak!" You smiled, walking over to her playfully with your hands on your hips, "When did you grab that?"

"Wear!" The little girl demanded.

You took out your phone and checked the time. You sucked your teeth in.

"It's already 9: 30, hun. And you still have to take your bath." You picked Nya up, hearing Kai exit out of the bathroom. "However, tomorrow you can wear all the new clothes you bought!" You made a deal with the girl, who smiled and nods.

"Even me?" Kai's voiced was heard from the kitchen, causing you to laugh. "Even you, Kai. We'll have a mini fashion show!"

"Oh! We should record it and show mama and papa!" Kai smiled eagerly, running to his room to change into his PJ's, no knowing he also needs to take a bath, but you said nothing.

You went quiet when Kai mentioned Ray and Maya, in their case, their parents. How are you going to tell them?

Nya grabbed your cheek, pinching it, knocking you out of your thoughts, instantly smiling and tossing Nya into the air as you walked into the bathroom.

The Plan Was Understood

Summary: One second, Krux and Acronix are on top. The next, everything has everything has fallen to pieces. That seems to be the case the longer this goes on.

Notes: Woo! This... got out of hand. I had intended for this to be less than 900 words and now there's more than double. I suppose that's always a possibility when I'm writing AUs since it takes longer to establish the backstory. But hey, I had a good time. And I genuinely hope you enjoy this. Thank you for the request!

There goes a saying from Krux’s hometown—the people who care about you most are your biggest critics. He supposes that could not be more true when he has a twin brother.  

“That could have gone better.” 

“Shut up, Acronix.”

“You should have gone left-”

“I said, shut up.” 

The snow-packed ground of the Birchwood Forest crunches underfoot as Krux and Acronix make their way toward the next secluded village. Quiet places have become few and far between in the time it’s taken for them to grow up. That thought itches at Krux’s brain the same way the newest patch of scales itches at his skin. 

Krux struggles to concisely explain their situation. But it goes something like this: 

The world always moves forward. Of all the aspects of time they can control, permanently stopping or slowing it down is not one of them. As the clock continues ticking, so do the tides of war. 

Absolute victory on behalf of the Elemental Alliance meant more frenzied and dangerous Serpentine, which meant more desperate measures—surprise attacks that drained the hearing in Acronix’s right ear and the humanity from Krux’s blood. 

One second they were both on top, the next a Fangpyre had sank its teeth into Krux’s shoulder. 

From there onward, it became a bit of a blur. Krux remembers his vision spinning, his lungs burning, and the sounds of his brother flying off the handle. By the time he had managed to stomp his horror down, he’d found the snow beneath him stained red and his brother lingering above him in total silence. He’d been bitten by a Fangpyre—the one Serpentine bite for which no recorded cure existed. 

“I guess you’ll just have to find one then,” Acronix told him the day after.

The straightforward brutality of the statement had shocked Krux right out of his misery. 

“Find a cure? Acronix, I can’t. There is no cure.” 

“Not with that attitude.” Acronix leaped up from his bedroll and started throwing things into a travel bag. “Think about it, you’re the smartest person I know. If anyone can find something that doesn’t exist, it would be you.” He turned, shooting Krux a blinding smile. “And I can be your bodyguard! Anytime someone threatens you, I’ll just knock ‘em out.” 

Krux could feel a vein about to pop. 

Had his brother gone mad?

“That’s not going to work,” Krux bit out. “There’s too many risks. If anyone in the alliance sees me, they’ll-” The words lodged themselves in his throat. Killing him would be the kindest thing any of them would do. “Acronix, we can’t just-” 

“We sure can. Let’s go!” 

And there went his injudicious brother, marching off headlong into a half-hazard plan with no clear goals beyond deserting the Elemental Alliance in search of a cure that may or may not exist. 

In the present day, it makes Krux wonder what it says about him that the only guy to have complete, total faith in him is one who sometimes forgets how to spell his own name.  

“Hey! It’s not my fault that K and X look so similar.”

“Whatever you say, brother.” 

“And you should have gone left.” 

“I reversed that situation twice,” Krux replies. “It wouldn’t have mattered if I had gone left or right.” 

“I’m sure it wouldn’t have,” Acronix says after a stretch of silence. “Not with Yukio Kimura standing there like a damn omen of death.” 

Krux grits his teeth as the image of the Master of Ice flashes in his memories. Avoiding the Elemental Alliance started out easy enough. Lately, though, news of the final tomb for the Serpentine being sealed had spread like wildfire, prompting much of the alliance to scatter across the land. Villages had become less safe, people more bold, and then twins had to force themselves to constantly stay moving because of it. 

Today had been a nightmare in and of itself for those very reasons. 

The village people had been kind to them when they first arrived. But once someone caught a peek at the scale-ridden face Krux kept hidden beneath his hood, they turned on the twins one by one. Such an occurence wasn’t uncommon, normally he and Acronix would trounce whoever targetted them and the continue onto the next village. 

This time, they hadn’t been so lucky. 

The Master of Ice had seen Krux—seen his sickly green scales crawling over his pale skin, slitted eyes, and forked tongue. Hardly human in every physical aspect. Then Ice had blinked and disappeared in the flap of an owl’s wing. That’s the thing about Ice—he’d always been somewhat cryptic and mysterious, disappearing and reappearing whenever he saw fit.

Acrconix audibly shudders mid-step. “I still think he’s creepy.” 

Krux says nothing but silently agrees. 

“Maybe not as creepy as you but-’ Acronix’s voice cuts off as he soon as he catches Krux’s death-bringing glare. He rockets off into a volley of laughter. “Oh, come on, it’s just a joke, brother. You know I don’t mean it like that.” 

“Of course, not.” Krux rolls his eyes. 

“I mean it,” Acronix emphasises. “You’re my brother no matter what. Even if we don’t find a cure, you will always be my brother. No amount of scales or fangs will change that.” 

As Acronix prattles on, Krux is first somewhat insulted that his brother would assume he couldn’t find a cure—this had been Acronix’s idea. He had been so adamant that Krux could find or make one. Even with no studies conducted or any freeroaming Fangpyre to ask, why wouldn’t there be a cure? Why would Acronix suddenly believe that there isn’t one?

Fortunately or unfortunately—Krux can’t decide—most of that is drowned out by the certainty of Acronix’s words. 

By now, Krux thinks he should have come to expect Acronix’s undying loyalty. Instead, there’s always an udercurrent of comfort at the thought.  

“Okay, did you catch all that? Always my family, yes?” Acronix tromps through the snow to catch up to Krux and sling an arm around Krux’s shoulders. “Besides, we’re identical, aren’t we? That means we have equally dashing good looks and-”

Snap!

Krux and Acronix freeze. They immediately slide into a position where they can see each other but cover their blindspots. 

“Did you hear that?” Acronix whispers. 

Krux makes the “affirmative” and the “quiet” hand signal to him one after the other. The forest holds still. There’s no sound, no movement, it’s as if tragedy wandered through. It’s not unusual for a forest to make noise, of course. Both of them realize that but it’s better to be safe than sorry. 

Then a dark blur flashes between the trees. 

“Five o’clock.” Krux motions with his hand. “Three o’clock. Get ready.” 

All at once, the forest explodes with light. Acronix doubles over first as the sheer power of it turns his surroundings into a field of white. Krux struggles to process before squeezing his eyes shut and switching to his infrared. What follows, as far as he can sense, are things that could have only crawled their way out of his worst nightmares: 

Acronix bolts away. He stumbles around blindly, swiping his dagger through the air. What Krux would describe as a burning white flare shoots across the ground and incapacitates him in one swift motion. 

It then turns on Krux and knocks him out with a solid punch to the face.

Acronix wakes feeling like his skull has split in two. He screws his eyes shut immediately after he opens them. A dim, golden-white light pours across the wooded floor in front of him, specks of dust blinking in and out of being. Silently, Acronix hopes it’ll sear his eyes out quickly so he won’t suffer for long. 

Then the sound of paper shuffling touches the air and he decides it’s time to wake up. 

He pulls himself up as silently as he can and takes in his surroundings. 

A glowing, translucent barrier falls from the ceiling to the floor in a magnificent library. Several colors of books and scrolls and trinkets stand crammed together on each and every shelf. A quick glance to the window tells Acronix that night has fallen. A solitary lamp shows him the sillhouette of a single person—one that he knows all too well.  

“Wu?” 

Wu's shoulders visibly tense at the sound of his name. When he turns, his dark eyes land immediately on the outline of Acronix’s figure. Something like relief or quiet joy opens out across his face in a gentle smile. 

“Acronix, you’re okay.” 

A red-hot anxiety bubbles up in Acronix’s stomach as all the memories play back. The blinding light, the white flare darting between the trees, and the speed at which they collapsed, all melding together to create the perfect ambush—one that only a master of war could have so carefully created. Wu did this. 

And Yukio. 

No doubt Yukio had a hand in this as well. He’d probably alerted Wu to the twins’ location. Acronix swore he’d kill that creepy git. 

“Where’s my brother?” Acronix asks, his mouth running ahead of his mind. He presses his hands up against the wall of his prison. “What did you do with him?” 

“I can explain,” Wu says. 

Acronix strikes his fist against the barrier. A shuddering reverb rings out from the impact as its golden, glassy surface gutters and sparks like a dying firework. 

“You better! Or I swear I’ll make you regret this-”

“Please, calm down,” Wu commands, his voice coming in a soft tone. His powers swell up from his hands and flow through the barrier to strengthen it once more. “I have no intention of hurting you or your brother. I’m here to help.” 

“Oh, sure you are.” 

“I am,” Wu continues. “I know you don’t think so but I’m not about to leave you two when you so clearly need assistance. I have… means of helping your brother, I’ve already started the research. It’s the effect of the Fangpyre, right? Its venom isn’t as strong as… as…”

Wu doesn’t say anyone’s name but his silence speaks volumes. Someone he loves. Someone he’s lost, perhaps? Someone whose presence had been dampened by that of a damnable Serpentine bite. Whoever they were, their meaning to Wu does not talk in a language that Acronix understands. He wonders if that’s a bad thing. 

“It’s manageable, is what I’m saying,” Wu finally carries on. “It’s not too late.” 

“We’ve been managing just fine without you.” 

Wu shakes his head. “I know you two are used to being on your own but it doesn’t have to be that way. I can make a cure.”

“We’re fine the way we are, you fool! Krux is no less my brother, even as a Serpentine.” Acronix narrows his eyes in accusatory fasten. “Besides, there is no cure. Krux would have found it by now if there was.”

“There’s notes from neighboring villages that actively prove otherwise.” Wu’s hand brush against the pages of a thick grimoire resting on a nearby table. “If I can obtain a little bit of his blood-” 

“Don’t you dare put your hands on him!” Acronix slams his fists against the barrier again. This time, it doesn’t budge. It doesn’t flicker. It doesn’t fall. He grits his teeth with the cold flood of panic washing through his veins, images of what Wu might do to his brother coming with it, none of them good. “Anything you do to him I’ll do to you tenfold!” 

Wu doesn’t seem to care for the racket. His chest rises and falls as he takes a deep breath and steadily makes his way toward the exit. 

“Try not to hurt yourself, please,” he says. “I’ll be back once I’ve finished talking to Krux.” 

“Get back here! I won’t let you touch him!” 

Wu briefly pauses in the doorway to stare as Acronix with an expression of sorrow. 

“I’ll bring your brother back, Acronix. I promise.” 

The door taps shut against the frame as Acronix’s shouting rings out into emptiness.
