The Art of Korean Skincare: Steps to Luminous Skin
Korean skincare has taken the beauty world by storm, renowned for its meticulous routines and innovative products. The ultimate goal? Achieving luminous, healthy skin that glows from within. This blog will guide you through the art of Korean skincare, introducing key steps and products that can transform your skin.
Step 1: Cleansing - The Foundation of Flawless Skin
The first and most crucial step in any skincare routine is cleansing. Proper cleansing removes impurities, makeup, and excess oil, setting the stage for the rest of your skincare products to work effectively.
Recommended Product: Some By Mi Acne Clear Foam Cleanser
The Some By Mi Acne Clear Foam Cleanser is a fantastic choice for this step. It not only cleanses your skin thoroughly but also targets acne with powerful ingredients like tea tree oil and salicylic acid. This foam cleanser helps to keep breakouts at bay while maintaining the skin's natural moisture balance. Using this cleanser twice a day will ensure your skin is free from impurities and ready for the next steps in your routine.
Step 2: Toning - Prepping Your Skin
Toning is an essential step that often gets overlooked. A good toner balances your skin's pH, removes any remaining impurities, and preps your skin to absorb the subsequent products more effectively.
Recommended Product: Cosrx AHA BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner
The Cosrx AHA BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner is perfect for this step. This toner contains both AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) and BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid), which gently exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores. This dual-action helps to brighten the skin and improve its texture, making it smoother and more radiant. Use this toner after cleansing by applying it to a cotton pad and gently swiping it over your face.
Step 3: Moisturizing - Locking in Hydration
Moisturizing is a non-negotiable step in any skincare routine. It helps to lock in moisture, ensuring your skin stays hydrated and supple throughout the day and night.
Recommended Product: Cosrx Advanced All In One Moisturizing Cream
The Cosrx Advanced All In One Moisturizing Cream is a powerhouse of hydration. This cream contains snail mucin, which is known for its incredible healing and moisturizing properties. It helps to repair the skin, improve elasticity, and provide deep hydration without feeling greasy. Apply this cream after toning, using gentle upward strokes to massage it into your skin.
Step 4: Sun Protection - Shielding Your Skin
Sunscreen is perhaps the most critical step in any skincare routine. It protects your skin from harmful UV rays, which can cause premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and even skin cancer.
Recommended Product: Cosrx Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF 50+++
The Cosrx Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF 50+++ offers excellent sun protection while also soothing the skin. Infused with aloe vera, this sunscreen not only shields your skin from UV damage but also provides a calming effect, making it ideal for all skin types, especially sensitive skin. Apply this sunscreen every morning as the final step in your routine, and reapply throughout the day as needed.
The Art of Consistency
One of the secrets to achieving luminous skin through Korean skincare is consistency. It's not just about using the right products but also about sticking to your routine daily. The steps outlined above create a solid foundation for healthy skin.
Additional Tips for Luminous Skin
Hydration from Within: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.
Healthy Diet: Incorporate a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids to nourish your skin.
Adequate Sleep: Ensure you get enough sleep, as your skin repairs itself during the night.
Stress Management: Practice stress-reducing activities like yoga or meditation to maintain overall skin health.
Conclusion
Mastering the art of Korean skincare involves dedication, the right products, and a consistent routine. By following the steps outlined above and incorporating products like Some By Mi Acne Clear Foam Cleanser, Cosrx AHA BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner, Cosrx Advanced All In One Moisturizing Cream, and Cosrx Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF 50+++, you can achieve luminous, healthy skin. We're nowhere near that point, we still need to be pushing for a ceasefire and then fighting for Palestinian liberation, but I was having a lot of thoughts about "after." About a culture in a place of rebuilding.
Because I'm the product of after. I grew up knowing my family is small because so many were killed. Every time I hear about people losing entire families, losing homes, losing everything they owned, that's where my mind goes. And I was having a lot of vague thoughts, and this video solidified them for me, sort of gave words for the grief and the anger that I feel on top of the loss of life.
It's a Korean American talking about Japan's culture and how they got to preserve it. Old buildings, unbroken lines of craftsmanship going back centuries. Beautiful videos online showing it off. And they say, "we too would have these sorts of videos if we hadn't been colonized. And that's what the annihilation or the attempted annihilation of a culture does. Your history gets broken. There's not a continuous timeline of traditions and artifacts and artisans because a lot of them died. And a lot of our temples and palaces, they were all rebuilt because the original structure was destroyed."
And they tie it into Palestine. Seeing the destruction of historical buildings. For me, I thought about how few people remain still making Palestinian olive oil soap, for example. This is damage we did that we can't undo, and we continue to do it. And it will leave a scar in history, even after they have the space to recover and have had generations to heal.
Things like this are why I insist on saying Israel is a colonial project. The things we do and the damage we cause - colonized people know it.
Anyway, this is mostly meant to share their video.

Morning Routines
We're all looking at those Instagram influencers who somehow manage to wake up at 5 am, do meditation, journal, do a 15-step Korean skincare routine, and go to the gym. And then they make a green smoothie and avocado toast, get dressed in a Chanel outfit and then sit at their fancy desk with a vanilla latte and a croissant.
This is not realistic. You probably already know that, but it likely won't stop you from trying to change your routine bit by bit to look a little like theirs. That didn't stop me, at least.
But now I've come to realise that no matter how much I try, I'll never be able to have a routine like the ones I see online. Because it doesn't exist. It's all curated for aesthetic appeal and generates a sense of false productivity in the watcher's brain. We feel motivated looking at those videos and never get around to changing our own life because we're too busy living vicariously through our phones.
Here's some things you should add to your morning routine, not to be fancy, but to feel better. This is coming from someone who's tried the unrealistic routines, and I now incorporate all of these into my routine. You can skip or add things according to your schedule.
S-T-R-E-T-C-H: Do your body a favour and loosen up your muscles. Nothing better than having a good stretch that wakes your body up.
Drink water: Before you put anything in your system, drink water. Not coffee, not tea. Plain warm water. And I don't mean lemon water. Some people might not agree, but lemon water strips your teeth of the enamel. It also is acidic, so all that bullshit they talk about it being "alkaline and pH balancing" is nonsense. Warm water is the way to go.
Make your bed: A clean bed should be the first thing you do after you wake up. At the end of the day, you'll thank yourself because it will be clean, and fresh and you can fall into bed immediately.
Hygiene: Wash your face to get rid of crusty eyes and sleep. Do a basic skincare routine (cleanser, moisturizer) so you'll feel fresher. Brush your teeth and hair.
Move your body: It doesn't matter what you do, even if it's for 15 minutes. Go for a walk, do a Zumba workout, or squeeze in a HIIT session. You can find lots of tutorials on YouTube (Caroline Girvan, growingannanas, Chloe Ting). Either way, working out will help you feel more motivated and happier. It's the endorphins.
Clean yourself: Set aside some time for showering, slathering on lotion, and doing your (real) skincare and makeup routine. Pick an outfit that makes you feel good about yourself.
Eat something: ALWAYS make some food. Your body has been famished for hours on end, give it some fuel. Make a healthy breakfast, or prep one the night before. If you don't get very hungry in the mornings, have a banana, and pack a mid-morning snack beforehand so you don't reach for chips.
Do 3 things: Make a to-do list of everything you need to do today. Don't overwhelm yourself. Then, knock off 3 easy tasks from the list that you can do quickly. You'll be filled with a sense of motivation, and it'll be easier for you to complete your list. It can be chores, it could be some assigned reading. Just get it done.
Gratitude or prayer: You don't need to sit for 15 minutes to practice gratitude. You can think of things your thankful for on the way to school or work or practice deep breathing/say a small prayer on the subway or bus. You don't HAVE to do it, but it definitely makes you realise how much you have in life and appreciate it more.
Kindness: Start your day with kindness. Compliment your barista, smile at the old lady on the street, pet the stray cat. There's so much love in the world, and you have so much love inside you, and it's beautiful to be a part of it.
No longer will I be stuck in a rut. I cannot be confined to being a bitter, unhealthy person when I know there's a smiling, healthy, happy version of me in the future. Deep breaths. You'll get there babe.

Creative Spotlight #1: Kim Hongjoong
Masterlist
Intro: With so many new Atinys coming in, I figured now would be a good time to shed some light on all the boys' creative solo projects over the years, big and small.
Photography
Hongjoong's love for photography goes way back to his predebut days. In one of the first videos ever uploaded to their channel, you can already see him holding a camera on the set of Pirate King.
2 years ago, in 2022, he got to announce his first photo exhibition, FROM NOVEMBER 7, 1998, as a birthday present to himself, which took place from November 1st to 7th at gallery99 and was used to collect money for charity.
There was no entrance fee but spots had to be reserved online to ensure there'd be no dangerous crowding. During the exhibition, there was a little event planned for all attendees in which fans could collect points which were then converted to money that was later donated under Hongjoong and Atiny's name. The total donated amount was 10 million won!
In Logbook Episode 101, we got to see Hongjoong visit the exhibition himself and take a stroll through memory lane.
Due to the success of the 2022 exhibition, Hongjoong held another one last year which took place between November 3rd and 9th, 2023, and was titled A Walker - the event was accompanied by the release of an original song and led to the donation of 50 million won under Hongjoong's and Atiny's name to the Korea Childhood Leukemia Foundation.
BY. HONGJOONG
Back in 2018, Hongjoong shared during their stay in LA as KQ Fellaz, that he barely went to school since he already started producing music during his high school days. And yes, this is during the same tear jerking monologue where he calls Ateez his family for the first time and says he needs to hurry so he can see their sleeping faces before he goes to bed.
youtube
The first time we get to see Hongjoong fully in action as a producer is during his first 1-Day-Vlog in 2020 in which he's working on his Prince cover (more on that in a second).
But now to the main event: Hongjoong has an entire series going where he covers some of his all time favorite songs. Whenever he does, he likes to make the songs his own by recording his own instrumental track and typically adding an additional Korean rap verse with self-written lyrics highlighting his interpretation of the song's message.
youtube
Kicking things off with Space Oddity by David Bowie, a classic.
Side Note: As a lover of unisex clothing/androgyny, Hongjoong is likely not just inspired musically by Bowie, but also fashion wise. You can learn more about Bowie's influence on the climate surrounding gender and sexuality here.
Dressed in white, matching both his hair and the background, Hongjoong turned himself into a clean canvas on which he projected first footage of Bowie and later some floating orbs - it's very aesthetic.
Between the original verses and chorus, he placed a Korean rap verse in which he writes from Major Tom's perspective and laments his mental state while stuck alone in outer space, asking ground control to tell his mom he loves her while stating he still appreciates the beauty of space but feels lost and lonely all by himself.
youtube
Next up, we've got Purple Rain by Prince, another classic.
Side Note: Like Bowie, Prince too was famous for being androgynous in how he presented himself and toying with what society deemed masculine and feminine. He's famous to this day among the queer community for how persistently he defied gender norms and labels. Learn more about him here.
Instead of filming himself, we get a lyric video this time, fully kept in pastel lavender. Once again, Hongjoong added a rap verse of his own in which he speaks to a lost friend, talking about how he hopes that, even though they're apart now, his friend will still recall him as being sincere and that they can still think of each other fondly and remember the good times.
youtube
In a far more elaborate production, we've got Black or White by Michael Jackson up next.
Using green screen and multiple outfits, we get a fun spectacle of a little passion project featuring multiple versions of Hongjoong, background collages, emojis, and more:
Despite being shorter than the other covers, we still get the signature rap verse preceded by his famous giggle and, this time, he's got quite a bit to say.
Diving into the lyrics, he talks about how we're all different colors. Colors which are meant to be mixed. Our roots don't define us. Throughout life, we'll all get mixed up with each other, as we should. He doesn't want to see us divided. To quote: "What's wrong with you, babe? Stop it. You've already experienced the 20th century. Blah blah by dividing groups."
The song ends with the rap verse before the video dives into the making of in which Hongjoong specifically addresses his intent to talk about social issues like Michael Jackson famously used to while he was alive (think: They Don't Really Care About Us).
youtube
So long time by Yoon Jong Shin comes next with a sepia-toned video featuring Hongjoong at a grand piano. It's a pretty ballad highlighting his vocals and the use of multiple camera angles allows us to watch him play.
Shortly before we hit the 2 minute mark, Hongjoong gets up and we transition from the shot of the piano to a cassette player while the audio shifts to the original for a moment before Hongjoong returns.
We've reached the rap verse where he mourns a lost love, speaking of memories he can't let go of, even as he pretends everything is okay. He's cold and lonely now, a little mad at himself for continuously getting lost in the memories, and calls himself a fool before we return to the cover-part of the song.
At 3:58, the song wraps up and we've reached the making of section of the video where he talks about how his cover stems from the idea of a time machine taking you through the song, with the first verse (playing the piano) being the past, the rap verse symbolizing the present, and the memories then taking back over as he gets lost in them, leading to the piano's return.
youtube
Next up, we've got Last Christmas by Wham! which opens to a short clip of Hongjoong's acting on a pretty Christmas film set before we transition to a simple white back drop.
This time, the signature rap verse comes in early at 50 seconds with a little giggle before he talks about leaving the past in the past and moving on, letting the snow settle over painful memories.
However, this time, we also get a second rap verse at 1:45, where it becomes clear he hasn't moved on at all, plus a Korean vocal section at 2:43 which carries through to the end. Here, he highlights even further that he hopes they'll reconnect next winter so they can leave the painful past behind and live out a shared future.
youtube
Hongjoong in his emo era. This is the first Ateez-related video I've ever seen because I was born in '96 and my emo phase never ended so of course this was recommended to me when it was first released.
Numb by Linkin Park got the full Hongjoong treatment and was even reported on by Rolling Stone, quote:
The cover began trending on social media and YouTube within hours of its release, but the true prize came a day later when it caught the attention of Linkin Park themselves. The rock band’s official Twitter account ‘liked’ the post on ATEEZ’s page, with co-founder and vocalist Mike Shinoda confirming on a livestream that he’d seen and enjoyed the cover. As of this writing, Hongjoong’s version of “Numb” has over half a million views on YouTube and has garnered tremendous praise from Linkin Park’s fans.
We get the black eye makeup and nail polish, the plaid half skirt, the dramatic music video with fake fog and red lighting. The rap verse comes in hard, talking about getting mentally weighed down by an abuser and finally breaking free, cutting the ties.
As a long time Linkin Park fan, I love how unique this cover is and Chester would've loved it too I'm sure. I wish he could've seen it.
youtube
Fools Garden's Lemon Tree is another classic and I come back to it on the regular because the video has such a unique vibe and the song is famous for getting stuck in your head.
The video features Hongjoong alone in a house surrounded by colorful toys and games, bored out of his mind and visibly seeking a distraction from life but failing to find something, no matter how out of pocket his thinking gets.
Shoutout to the license plate - it's the release date of the song, November 3rd, 1995.
At 1:33, Hongjoong sprints off to the basement which is doused in red and we get a warped version of his signature giggle before the rap verse kicks in. The camera work in this section reminds me a bit of his rap verse in Not Okay.
While down there, he gets more and more deranged, talking about being locked up day by day, imprisoned, losing track of time, but being unable to break out. Instead of trying to escape, he just attempts to distract himself, listening to sad songs on a loop until his pain disappears and his world switches back to yellow.
Busking Event
In 2021, Hongjoong decided to put together a busking event featuring live performances of some covers, plus acoustic versions of some of their songs. Accompanying him were both Ateez and Maddox. You can find the full playlist here:
Collaboration
3 months ago, Chungha made a return to the music scene after escaping her former label and chose Hongjoong as a collaboration partner for her new debut. Beyond his rap verse, she also incorporated a move from Crazy Form in the choreography (she's lovely):

Episode 4: Disconnected
Beyond the Star, produced by HYBE Media Studio
Namjoon gives a brief recap of their rise from debut, through the struggles of the next few releases and then they take off with Wings, Fire, Blood Sweat & Tears, Fake Love, and Idol and all their accolades and awards.
They open this episode with behind scenes from filming the ON MV at Los Angeles' Sepulveda Dam. It was hot that day.
[did you say something Jimin? ahem... anyway]
Regarding the previous years to this point in time, Namjoon says he may not have made the best choices all the time but he believes he made the best choices he could at the time. Yoongi says they compacted 20 years into 7 years at the expense of their physical well-being.
Namjoon says he tried to prove himself to the world but now sees that what he's left with are the choices he wanted to make at the time with all his effort and he learned a lot from them.
Jungkook says he lived a life fit for himself, that if he had forced himself to do something that didn't suit him, it would not have been good. He did what he wanted to do and experienced a lot. All decisions he made for himself and which helped him grow.
In other words, they chose to work hard and run full speed ahead and we know that led to an almost burnout situation.
Namjoon states the lyrics of the song ON are what they mean: they've been through it and are on the other side, they made it to the other side together. Bring the pain, bring it on, it will only make us stronger.
It is heartbreaking to hear them talk about how much work they put into the MOTS tour, how involved they were with equipment and production decisions. Yoongi said it had been a while since they'd been this excited about preparing for concerts.
Things were planned that we never knew about. A large-scale gala for TV promotions?
And then the news early 2020. Jimin was asking if there was any chance the concert would ever go ahead as planned...
During the two years or so of the pandemic, each member dealt with the social distancing, self-quarantining, loneliness and lack of live performances in their own ways. They did a lot of nothing during this time. The footage shown here was not of them during the first months of the pandemic. There were no cameras set up during that time. They used footage from times when they COULD film safely to help represent how they were during isolation. Looks like Hobi and Jungkook in the hotel suite after the Grammy Awards and footage of Jimin in his apartment in late 2021, etc.
There were long periods of time when everyone, including you and me were asked or required to abstain from going outside, to isolate away from others, to not socialize with more than 5 or 10 people at a time, even with our families.
Bang PD reflects that BTS were at the peak of their careers, they lived to perform, and had to overcome the feelings of helplessness and that's how he believes they've grown as humans.
So they innovated...they produced the first online ticketed concert: Bang Bang Con. Over 750,000 viewers watched.
It was reported on the news that BTS was once again changing the industry.
And then on August 21, 2020, they released a song to enjoy with the fans:
If The Most Beautiful Moment in Life was the turning point, Dynamite was literally the explosion that shot them into the stratosphere.
Dynamite broke records of every kind: on Youtube the MV set a new record of over 3 million peak viewers during its premiere, almost doubling the previous record, and set a new all-time record for the biggest music video premiere on the platform and the most viewed YouTube video in the first 24 hours, earning 101.1 million views and setting three new Guinness World Records.
In the U.S., Dynamite debuted a #1 on the BBHot100, and is BTS' first #1 single in the US. The song became both the longest-running number one on the Digital Songs chart by a Korean artist and the longest-charting song by a Korean artist on the Hot 100, when it spent its 18th non-consecutive week at #1 the Digital Song sales chart and 32 weeks on the Hot 100, three of those weeks at #1.
Hobi said it was overwhelming that their sincerity had reached all parts of the world. Jin said it was a song to simply enjoy with fans.
Bang PD said he knew what this would mean for their future and what a positive impact it was.
Yoongi said they did the song in the hopes of giving everyone strength during the trying times of the pandemic. Namjoon says because of the situation (the pandemic) they lost so much (cancellation of the MOTS tour) so during that time, the strength of music and performances were their way to give comfort and support to the fans.
With the ongoing pandemic, they had to adapt. In October 2020, they produced Map of the Soul ON:E ... two online concerts that had a record-breaking 993,000 paid viewers from a total of 191 regions across the globe. It was performed at the Olympics Gymnastics Arena. It was elaborately produced. It was expensive. Lots of man-hours went into it.
They said they enjoyed doing it, they worked hard but it was a challenge because the missing element was a live audience... Army was missing. It would never replace a live concert's energy but they were still thankful they could even do it to begin with. It would be another year before BTS was in front of a live audience again.
Overnight on Nov. 24, 2020 they gathered in front of the television in their dorm to watch the 63rd Grammy Awards nomination announcements. Only four of them were there: Jimin, Namjoon, Jungkook and Tae. I had heard the others had schedules the next day and needed to sleep.
They had never known how the Grammy nominations were announced, this was their first experience and when BTS was announced you could feel their astonishment through the screen. The first Korean artist to ever be nominated.
During the Grammy Award broadcast (done remotely), they also performed their own song, Dynamite.
Alas, they did not win but they'd made so much history and broke so many records in 2020, the year of deep lows and the highest highs.
They felt motivated, knowing they still had room for success and had something to strive for.
They were proud to show the world that there are singers like them from Korea and that Army and BTS exist.

Why so green? Am I seeing Wicked or Phantom?
Did POTO Korean producers S&CO do something to make POTO Korea’s proscenium look so gross and green in order to discourage audiences from taking photos? (You bet this did not happen in NYC, London & China!!)
So S&CO in Korea has these extremely strict rules:
(1) Absolutely no curtain call photos/videos allowed.
(2) No designated day(s) for fans to meet & greet Phantom actors at all. Stage dooring for Phantom in Korea doesn’t exist. Actors either (a) stop to wave and bow and then get into a car or (b) walk quickly while smiling and bowing.
(3) No official curtain call photos/videos were ever released except a few seconds in promotional videos early in the production.
So one day, my phriend @jeremyonthelair and I were talking about POTO’s proscenium and how beautiful the angel statue is. But then he mentioned something that piqued my interest right away.
“Did you notice Korea proscenium in Charlotte theater has a green tint on all the golden sculptures? And the strangest thing is I didn’t see the green tint in person!! Only in photos!!”
Side note: Jeremy saw POTO China this past summer and POTO Korea in the fall, so you could say he had something to compare to in a short period of time.
We proceded to share proscenium photos – Jeremy with his China and Korea photos and me with Bway photos.
↑ Jeremy’s Korea photo
↑ My Majestic theatre photo taken on the day of the last public performance
↑ Jeremy’s Shanghai photo
Please note: I did not edit any photos in this post at all (other than a black oval to cover my phriend).
Here I have compiled some Korea proscenium photos as evidence. And for comparison, I also added some Majestic theatre photos provided by me and a fellow NY phan @flagbridge – along with some POTO China photos.
Jeremy’s Korea photos:
1) ↑ Taken with an iPhone
2) ↑ Taken with a Samsung
The weirdest thing is —
3) ↑ Film camera looks fine
4) ↑ Xiaomi phone is less affected, somewhat
Here are some Charlotte theater photos and videos I found online:
1) ↑ Click on the link below to view the video. Yikes, this does not look good!

2) ↑ Another one from Mezzanine level
3) ↑ The current Korean Raoul, Gunha Hwang, posted this photo of the stage in Seoul – are these lights what’s turning everything green?

The same thing is happening in Daegu, Korea right now:
4) ↑ Posted Dec 23 in Daegu – click on the link to view the video

↑ https://weibo.com/3965362386/4967561219803733 My question to @lucygold95 @roadtophantom @fadinglandtragedy who have seen POTO in Korea. Did you see the gross green tint on the proscenium in person? Why do you think this is only happening in Korea?
I’d love to hear other phans’ thoughts as well!
Lastly, I want to thank my phriends Jeremy and @flagbridge for letting me use their photos.

bought like actual skincare products for the first time in years and have some notes.
the whole anti-aging cosmetic industry is really hard to avoid. i was getting stuff at a marshall’s (discount store, carries a lot of overstock from brands) to save money and it took me almost an hour to find a handful of products that weren’t advertising “anti-aging” and “youthfulness” when i just wanted a cleanser, toner, and sunscreen to help with both peeling skin and greasiness
no seriously. i found ONE facial sunscreen that didn’t have retinol or hyaluronic acid or collagen or any of that stuff in it. it was tucked away in the men’s section with beard oil and cologne because apparently facial sunscreen with no added bullshit is only for men, and women (this is borderline a fast fashion store it’s highly gendered) can only protect themselves from skin cancer if it also makes sure they never develop a smile line
so many of those serums and creams and shit are bullshit anyway. hell a lot of people can just do a wash and sunscreen and be all set. at most a basic cleanser, basic moisturizer, and sunscreen are the absolute most you need. i threw in an exfoliating toner to help even out a couple gnarly acne scars and help with how flaky my skin gets sometimes. if your skin needs more than that, you really should probably just go to a dermatologist or look for actual dermatologist’s advice instead of dumping a bunch of random oils and serums and creams n shit you saw on tiktok or instagram on your skin and hoping the benefits listed on the box will be true for you
IN MOST CASES no amount of skincare products can make up for lifestyle change. i decided to put a little more work in because the lifestyle changes i need to make to help be less oily (i literally get so greasy it makes my eyes burn) and flaky aren’t currently feasible, so i’m trying to give my skin a bit of a boost, but literally the best my skin has ever felt was when i was just drinking a shit ton of water and eating super well
other people’s skincare will rarely work the same on anyone else. everyone’s skin needs are different. when i was in high school i had a gnarly abrasion/chemical burn under my eye because i had tried a routine i saw online that was way too rough and overbearing for me. again, you 100% don’t need a 30 step routine
that being said, i used a $4 korean cleanser, a $6 glycolic acid toner (exfoliant), 100% pure african shea butter, and some sunscreen formulated for use on the face. my skin feels great. my acne doesn’t itch as much. the toner was the most expensive part. the beauty industry is a scam
#mothman speaks#and again#i think a majority of people don’t need much more than cleanser and sunscreen#obviously some folks have other issues they need more help with#but i think a lot of them know a random serum being pushed by an influencer isn’t going to cure their like cystic acne#or that a retinol cream will fix like burns or scarring or major disfigurement#so for pretty much everyone else#acne is just gonna happen to some people and it is what it is#your skin will change and shift with both age and life change#and no amount of viral masks or hacks will change that#so just like. wash your face. put sunscreen on. vibe

K-Beauty Haul: Revealing the Korean Skincare and Makeup Products I picked from Beauty Box Korea
One of the most exciting K-Beauty packages I have received from Beauty Box Korea (PR). I discovered their store just recently and was amazed by the selection of K-Beauty brands, especially some brands that are popular in Korea but are not easily available on other online stores. And they don’t sell just skincare, but k-pop goods, clothes, bags, accessories, and Korean food as well!
I had a hard time narrowing down my picks to the following as I had so many items on my wishlist. But, here’s what I picked:

We asked DPR Ian about his most iconic makeup looks ✨
How does makeup portray characters for DPR Ian?
Makeup has always been a huge part of creating a character. Like we see come up in a lot of pop culture, like the Joker. It's the iconic big lips and smile. For me, that really represented a lot of things that I wanted to play as a kid. Recently, The Crow that's coming out too. That's heavily inspired Mito's makeup. Also, cinema, production.

"Soon, Youngmi shaved her head, too, and stopped wearing makeup, joining the so-called “escape the corset” movement happening among young women in South Korea. The movement, which first gained popularity in 2018, saw Korean women publicly turn away from societally imposed beauty standards by cutting their hair short and going barefaced. (Youngmi was not alone — in 2019, a survey found that 24 percent of women in their 20s reported cutting back their spending on beauty products in the previous year, with many saying they no longer felt they needed to put in the effort.)
This eventually led Youngmi to “4B,” a smaller but growing movement among Korean women. 4B is shorthand for four Korean words that all start with bi-, or “no”: The first no, bihon, is the refusal of heterosexual marriage. Bichulsan is the refusal of childbirth, biyeonae is saying no to dating, and bisekseu is the rejection of heterosexual sexual relationships. It is both an ideological stance and a lifestyle, and many women I spoke to extend their boycott to nearly all the men in their lives, including distancing themselves from male friends. . . .
For Youngmi and many others who subscribe to its basic premises, 4B, or “practicing bihon,” is the only path by which a Korean woman today can live autonomously. In their view, Korean men are essentially beyond redemption, and Korean culture, on the whole, is hopelessly patriarchal — often downright misogynistic. A 2016 survey by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family found the incidence of intimate-partner violence at 41.5 percent, significantly higher than the global average of 30 percent. While 4B’s adherents may hope to change society — through demonstrations and online activism, and by modeling an alternative lifestyle to other women — they are not trying to change the men whom they view as their oppressors. It is too soon to tell whether this movement can survive and thrive over the long haul. But its ideas and actions have already affected the country’s online discourse, its politics, and most of all, individual women’s lives."
A means for survival in an untenable situation.

"unburning, we are still alive."
the eleventh instalment of my musical translation series — in which a scratched car leads to a conspiracy, a makeover, a heist, and at the end of it all, a sobering realisation.
the videos are not mine, but all translations are my own.
musical: treadmill (트레드밀)
cast (2023): [a] jeong donghwa, yoon seungwoo, ban jeongmo, kim taehyeong • [b] yu taeyul, kim junyoung, kim bangeon, shin hyucksu (shin subin)
synopsis: having lost his parents to an arson attack, A works at the premium car wash "washing zone," cleaning cars by hand in order to repay his inherited debt. humiliated by the car wash's rich clients and the red button they incessantly press, it's all A can do to suppress his frustration, work diligently, and look forward to the arrival of the one client who smiles kindly at him — until, to his horror, he accidentally scratches her car. right then, the mysterious stranger B appears at the car wash, goading the belittled A into expressing his indignance and venting his anger. if A can't pay to fix the scratch, he can just extort money from a criminal. swept along in B's scheme, A finds himself liberated from his demeaning drudgery — but will he truly be able to start a new life, or is he simply running in place?
production: studio vibe stone (twitter / youtube)

트레드밀 – treadmill
shin hyucksu as B (kim taehyeong as A)
That those actions, chosen thoughtlessly Tormented someone’s life Can you admit to it? That you, yourself, are an assailant
If those words, spat out thoughtlessly Carved my destiny How would I feel? If it were me, I’d shoot it all
The inevitable treadmill It’s not going forward Circling in place The inescapable treadmill
Treadmill
Can you believe it? That all the things you believed were right Are actually ruining your destiny. So, don’t be mistaken. This world isn’t all that beautiful.
The trigger beneath my finger When can I pull it? Towards the stench of destiny The treadmill you’ve chosen Get rid of your fear Shake up your destiny, treadmill
Treadmill

악취 – the stench
jeong donghwa as A
Rising with the setting sun The stench that stings my nose All that my effort and exhaustion produces Is the acrid stench soaked into my body
Everything that I believed was right A day where all of that disappeared No matter how hard I try Reality is cold, once again
I pray that I may escape Even if only for one day, today I pray that I may disappear Even if only for one hour, today
The car, smashed into blackened bits Me, who’s reached the alley’s dead end If my prayers are illusions If they are unbearable scars There is no other choice
I pray that I may escape Even if only for one day, please I pray that I may disappear Even if only for one hour, please
So that I may escape, so that I may escape So that I may escape, so that I may escape

왜 내 말이 틀려 – why, am i wrong?
kim junyoung as B (jeong donghwa as A)
How is this a crime? This is nothing compared to that red button of yours.
C’mon, try to refute it Why can’t you say anything? I know what it is you’re feeling
It’s your dulled heart And your bowed head That’s a crime Why, am I wrong?
Even if you run Even if you sprint The inescapable red button That’s your destiny
Conforming And being tamed The irreversible red button That’s you
Why did you come to me? Those emotions, burning deep within your heart Even when humiliated, you pretend not to know Your bruised heart
You, who neglects yourself. That’s a crime, y’know?
Even if you run Even if you sprint The inescapable red button That’s your destiny
Conforming And being tamed The irreversible red button That’s you
If you try running And try sprinting You can escape it The red button; your destiny
Express it And smash it up You can turn back The red button; that’s you
