I get them with my groceries so I have a little treat. Didn't check the box, wasn't paying much attention.

Crack it open to find it's NBA mascots?!

I gear up to be disappointed. Sports aren't my thing.

So I don't know if that is worldwide or just in Germany but there is currently a special season of "Kinder Joy", which is basically a different version of an Überraschungsei ("surprise egg") just with more plastic. And that special season is a series of little surprises that are Harry Potter themed. And I may or may not have gotten completely unhinged about it!!! 🤪😁🤩😍 I'm vibrating at a glass-shattering frequency, is the accurate description I believe. 😂😎 The surprise eggs look like this:

So I really, really wanted to get one on Sunday but couldn't find one, so I had high hopes that I could get one on Monday as all the shops were open again. But also, no luck and I was kinda sad.

I told my mom to look out for them too, if she may find them because they are relatively rare apparently. And she was like, well, okay, we'll see. So today I said that I was going to another big supermarket further away and try to find one there. And lo and behold she said, yeah but before you do, here's something I have for you. And yes, it was indeed a container with 3 of those eggs, which she had gotten some weeks earlier because she randomly saw it in a supermarket and wanted to give it to me on the 1st of June, which is children's day here in Germany. And like, I may have freaked out and lost my sh*t completely then and there! I was absolutely bamboozled and happy to the tip of my hair! 😄🍀

And the only thing that made this even a 1000 times better yet was the fact that I very eagerly opened the first egg and I shit you not, Snape was the first figure I held in my hands! 😄😍🤩💖

he can avoid hibernating if necessary, but he becomes restless and a bit irritable when depraved of his winter nap. even though he still treats everyone with kindness, if you know him well enough, you notice that many things make him less happy and he gets irritated mainly with himself, so it's kinder to not demand him to stay awake and just let him sleep

while he was sleeping, children brought him all their plushie treasures that helped them ward off nightmares when they were alone and didn’t have you and each other. they’ve put their owlbear toys around halsin so he wouldn't be lonely and scared in his dreams, someone put a blanket over him, someone even half managed to put a pillow under his head – not a small feat, mind you. more mischievous kids have been piling their toys atop him just for the fun of it, to see if it would wake him up, and giggling when it didn't

it's so much better than waking up alone and in the same empty room. the mess kids created around him is an evidence that he's now loved and cared for

and he has his suspicions about who might’ve brought him this blanket

he stretches his muscles, feeling his heart rate quickening*, and slightly unsteadily from a long sleep comes out

the smell of a bear who just spent months curled up in a cave is... well, not exactly exquisite, he knows it and lets out a slightly embarrassed chuckle when you put him in tight embrace, noticing that he's a little easier to hug now than when you did it kissing him goodnight**

the kids are sleeping yet. they demanded to know immediately when daddy halsin is back, and even tried to take turns staying awake and keeping watch – none of them lasted past 2 am, and you had to bring them to their beds. you don’t wake them up just yet, because you want to have some time for you two

you make him his first in this year huge mug of herbal tea with honey that you secretly stashed away and saved for him, and he fills his pipe, while you knead his stiff shoulders and untangle his hair

and, honestly, this moment is so worth waiting the whole winter for

*bears’ heart rate drops to 8-10 beats a minute while they hibernate **bears lose up to 33% of their weight while hibernating

Sunday Week In Review XVI & 2023 Wrapped

I feel like 2023 just started five minutes ago, am I the only one who feels like this year as passed by quickly but at the same time dragged its heels?

I've seen so many lovely end of year close out posts and years in review. I toyed with how I wanted to close out the year and what I could say that could sum it up sufficiently.

Betty rambles under the cut with this weeks reads if you're interested...

2023 has been a weird year if I'm entirely honest and somewhat isolating. I returned from mat leave, back to working from home, and having to scramble to make adjustments when things fell through. Which resulted in Mr. Truly and I working opposite shifts to ensure the S.S. Truly stayed afloat.

But during the last six months somehow I made it back to Tumblr, to an old account from way back when - pre-dating when the Canucks made it to game seven kinda old - I blew off the dust, cleaned house and made myself a little space. I still don't know 100% how it all happened, though I think it started with the Reddit forum.

You don't need to know the whole spiel about Pedro, because while we're here because of him, it's the community that holds us here. After floating and not really knowing what I was doing, I started to make connections within this community and finding a seat at the table (we'll come back to that) and I found joy again. I'd kinda lost myself in the fog that is half a dozen other titles/roles others looked to me as that had replaced just Betty.

I started writing, hadn't done that in years. I rekindled by love for graphic design, what I went to school for. I was reading books again, as well as so many great fanfics here. I even bought poetry books, something I hadn't done since I don't know when.

I've been really fortunate in my experience that I've encountered so many wonderful people. I may not get to be as social as I'd like to be, and I still have a fear of dropping into DM's & Asks unannounced. I have the shittest memory, if I don't keep a tab open or reply straight away it's sometimes days or weeks before I remember again. But I really hope that I've returned in kind what others have given me because I'd hate for anyone to feel like they don't belong here, because you do.

This community is a table (told you I'd come back) and it's size is immeasurable. It has no bounds and there's always room for whatever kind of chair you pull up and if you don't have one? We'll find one. Need to leave for a while? We'll save your seat. This my friends is a community, and if you're met with those who tell you the table is full, I'm telling you now, they're not a part of it.

Are there going to be those with more notes? Yes. Are there going to be people you're going to compare your writing to? Yes. Are you going to maybe want to pack it all in and delete your masterlist now and then? Yes.

But none of that takes away anything that makes you, you and what you bring to the table.

Life is hard enough without the added pressure of thinking you need to score imaginary internet points with stats and metrics that carry no value. I wish I knew the magic formula, because I'm still trying to figure it out myself, but let's try and be kinder to ourselves eh?

But I'm really going into 2024 with the goal of curating my own joy - whether it be indulging in the fanfics I want to write and read, more obnoxious coffees, a new fountain pen, giving myself permission to buy the fancy notebook, get back to baking or binging both seasons of Julia and pretending I can make one of her recipes.

So to sum it up, before this goes into a further incoherent ramble, this year has been about reaching out, starting connections and building something meaningful. I've met some amazing people that I am lucky to call friends and without their kindness and extending a seat at the table I'm not sure I'd still be around these parts.

Here's to more of that in 2024 - while I'm not always the best at replying to messages, my DM's and Ask's are always open, feel free to drop in at any time 💕

All I Want for Christmas (Frankie) by @morallyinept This was a delightful festive meet-cute that had me on the edge of my seat and also explores the character of Frankie and the ramifications of his actions on his friendships and his ex. 

All I Want (Will Miller) by @laurfilijames This was a bittersweet one-shot that touched on the idea that the festive season isn’t always for everyone and that you never know what’s going on with someone. 

I Put My Book Down to Be Here (Dieter) by @frenchiereading My first New Year’s Eve fic I’ve read this season and it’s so sweet and has a soft Dieter (my fave), who is still his chaotic self! I loved this from start to finish and such a great meet-cute!

Had Me Fooled (Dave) by @wildemaven Heidi has done such an amazing job with this mini series that can be read as a standalone or as a series. I love a soft Dave and Heidi does it so well. This last one had my toes curling in all their romantic glory and I will be revisiting this series again I'm sure!

Reunions (The Thief) by @ladamedusoif I'm behind on Rose's December prompts, but this was the steamy follow up to My Kiss, Only For You (go read that first, no seriously, go read it) and it was so delectable and my greedy self hopes we see these two again in the future.

Cookies (Tim) by @ladamedusoif Speaking of delicious things, this was as indulgent and sweet as the cookies made in this fic. Tim was one of the characters I didn't see becoming such a favourite this year - but I love seeing everyone's interpretation of him. This one here? In my top ranked versions 🫠

(Casey Jones x Villain! Gender Neutral Reader One-shot)

A spark of pink electricity escapes from under your mechanical claw, the crushed skull of the alien's fake body crumbling under the pressure. It makes a wonderful crackling noise. And just like a surprise egg, once you break the shell, a toy comes out.

The alien screeches as soon as its mechanical body sparks for the last time. Its bulging eyes focus on you only for a second before it's squealing to get away. But before it can wiggle its way out of your sight, another claw of yours grabs it with crushing force. The poor thing can only let out a pathetic whine as you close in, a wicked grin spreading across your face at its misery.

"You guys keep bugging me." You begin, crouching down to be at eye level with the pink creature. "You're like roaches. How many of you are there again?"

You pretend to wait for a response, knowing full well it has no ability to do so once its human disguise is destroyed. Despite this, you revel in its helpless squirming. At least, until it becomes annoying. Once the screeching starts to hurt your ears, you release the small alien. It spares one last glance at you before it's scurrying off. Well, that's what would've happened if you were just a bit kinder.

Instead, as soon as it's turned away from you, one of your titanium arms squishes the alien without a second thought. Gunky bio-matter splatters across the concrete ground of the alleyway you're in, and you grimace at the idea of cleaning your arms later from the substance.

Shaking the mechanical arm in an attempt to get some of the gunk off, you pause once footsteps fill the air. Glancing behind you, you find that the footsteps belong to none other than the Jones kid that's always bothering you.

A smirk makes its way on your face, almost involuntarily. Jones was fun to mess with, so you couldn't help but feel some joy anytime you see the boy. However, it seems he didn't feel the same, considering the way his lips stretch into a snarl once he spots you. His expression only serves to make you happier.

"Jones!" You smile, gunk long forgotten as you make your way towards the punk.

He tries to dodge your outstretched arms, but with the help of your mechanical ones, he has no escape from you. He grunts in distaste as you squeeze him, eyes wandering across the alley.

"What did you do this time?" He asks, gaze locked on the pink viscera stained concrete.

"I helped! Those pink aliens are your guys' enemies, aren't they?" You squish your cheek against his own, and surprisingly, he doesn't push you away. You're not sure if it's because he doesn't mind or because your titanium claws are hovering in a threatening manner, but you'd like to believe the first option.

"Uh, thanks." He mumbles, still staring at the ground below.

"Y'know, maybe I can start working with you guys." You ponder, tapping your fingers against his back as your grip goes slack. "That'd be more fun than this whole solo act."

"Really?" His head almost hits yours at his surprise, dark eyes surveying your face. "I mean, there's gotta be a better reason than that. Are you trying to spy? Are you working for those other ninja dudes?"

As his questions go on, your face continues to brighten. Your arms move to wrap around his shoulders as you lean against him.

"Maybe I just want to work with you?" You grin. Your noses are just barely touching, and Casey seems momentarily distracted before snapping out of his stupor.

"You're messing with me." He frowns, pushing you off of him forcefully. "I told you to stop saying stuff like that. It's weird. Can't you do normal hero-villain banter?"

"But I like you!" You laugh, grabbing at his hoodie.

He slaps your hand away, pulling out a hockey stick from his bag.

"I said to stop doing that." He commands, sliding his mask on. "Now shut up and fight me."

Your smile falters slightly at his words before reverting back to its previous state. Your robotic arms splay out behind you, fully prepared to take advantage of the boy's novice fighting skills. Of course, you'd never tell him how much he sucked at fighting, but you'd like to push him in the right direction. Plus, you couldn't decline a fight from Jones of all people. So, you ignore the slight burn the feeling of rejection ignites in your chest.

Jones is fun to mess with, but sometimes it feels as if he's the one messing with you.
