a question hit me out of the blue: why are aquamarines always cut square/emerald/baguette? feels like round cuts are a rarity in comparison to other gems.

did some reading & there’s 2 reasons maybe:

the crystalline structure of aquamarines is hexagonal (long & rectangular), makes them well-suited for cuts that follow that geometry. furthermore, aquamarines are often large in comparison to other gems, the aforementioned cuts maximize the yield from a rough aquamarine.

aquamarines are particularly prized for their color & transparency. the few large open facets of an emerald cut let much more light through than a round cut, you can see right through it.

i’m curious if aquamarines enjoyed such popularity in jewelry in the 20s/30s because their geometric shapes were perfect for the art deco craze.

i also like that part of aquamarine’s charm is maintaining its water-like quality.

Rationing Insulin.

I have been rationing my insulin at the expense of my health because I simply do not have the funds to replace pens. As a result my blood sugar has been spiking and staying stagnant at dangerously high levels.

I do not know or want to know what possessed me to ration my medication knowing I could possibly die from it. I haven’t been in my right state of mind in a while.

Currently I am on the medication Toujeo and I am uninsured so I have to pay out of pocket. So I am utilizing GoodRx to get me the cheapest option. I would be so immensly grateful to anyone who could spare towards my medication. I am running dangerously low and I don’t want to die from DKA.

Today’s Exhibit of the Day? It’s one of the largest amethyst geodes in the world! At about 13 ft (4 m) tall and 9,000 lbs (4,082 kg), this giant weighs about as much as three compact cars. It was born when molten magma poured from the Earth’s crust some 135 million years ago. While its dazzling purple crystals might catch your eye, this geode would have originally been composed of colorless quartz—its distinctive amethyst color deriving from millenia of natural radiation, heat, and trace contaminants. 

You can spot this geode, and other sparkly specimens, in the Museum’s Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals. We're open daily from 10 am-5:30 pm! Plan your visit.
