YES THIS. With the exception of some works that are either EXTREMELY AU or that deal with characters so minor in the canon that the author has basically invented their whole personality, a well-written fanfic would be BAD with the serial numbers filed off unless the writer took a lot of time to edit it into a new work that was also stripped of the underlying assumptions, canon, etc. and REPLACED them with original ones.

If your fic could be "any two people" then it's not doing its job of writing about specific, KNOWN people. If I'm doing my job as a writer, changing the names of my characters and little else would make you read the story and go "cool but this is obviously just a [Hobbit/Hawkeye/Star Wars/whatever] fanfic with the names changed."

"50 Shades made a ton of money, and it's bad," they say.

"Yeah," I say, "and I don't want to write bad books." (I mean, not that 50 Shades was good when it was a fanfic either, but you know.)

Also, like, can we NOT with the constant push to monetize everything. It's good to have hobbies that aren't a side hustle, it's GOOD, the benefit you get from them is JOY.

It really is crazy how if you mention you write fanfiction with people outside fandom, they're always like "you should change the names and try to sell it." It misses the point (fun), but more importantly to me, I get slightly (and I know irrationally) insulted on a craft letter. Excuse me, my fanfic is entwined with the canon, thank you very much. I wish sometimes less entwined. You wouldn't believe the stupid bullshit some of my fics have to include because of canon.

Your hobbies are here to help you decompress and have fun. They do not have to be disciplines you toil over for expertise, unless that is something you genuinely enjoy doing.

It’s okay to enjoy language-learning without ever becoming fluent, or even conversational. It’s okay to like playing guitar even if you only know a few clumsy songs. You can read books and never finish them, bowl without ever scoring even halfway to perfect. We’re here to explore and play, and we cannot do that if we’re chasing perfection in everything we do.
