My parents let me pick books out from the library or their bookshelves and just read them and sometimes my mother go back and read what I read or sometimes get ahead of me to figure out what I was being exposed to. Apart from forbidding a book outright because there was kissing on the cover, my mother also put sticky notes over two pages of Ann M Martin and Paula Danziger’s Longer Letter Later when I was 9 because Elizabeth mentions to Tara that she’s worried the family can’t afford Christmas presents for her sister, Emma, so she buys Barbie dolls for her herself. And then was surprised on Christmas when the dolls weren’t the only thing from Santa (because her dad was maxing out their credit cards)
My mother made a big deal of telling me not to look under the sticky notes under any circumstances because I wasn’t ready for the info. I did and that was my confirmation Santa was definitely fake…if she hadn’t done the sticky notes though I absolutely would have been like, “oh, thats because Santa did bring the other toys” and missed the credit card implication altogether.

🥊 Hickory?
Link to the ask game here! (Still open if anyone wants to send anything else in!)
🥊 - What does Hickory love to do? What do they hate to do?
I’m going to put this under a cut because it got long. Apparently I’m incapable of talking about Hickory a Normal Amount LOL /lh
Hickory loves farming, it’s both their job and their biggest hobby! Being an Alpha, they’re stronger than the average Pokémon too, so they’re well suited for this type of work!
Surprisingly, they didn’t like farming at first - they very much saw being sent to help on their uncle’s farm as a punishment, and did as much as they could to be unhelpful as possible. However, they eventually came around to the idea of being helpful, and it turned out to be very effective anger management for them? A lot of it was physically demanding, helped tire them out and not have that energy to lose their temper, but also a lot of the plants needed to be handled with care - there were a lot of mishaps at first, but Hickory eventually learnt how to be gentle with them, even when frustrated, a skill they’ve managed to apply in other situations!
Eventually they grew to love farming, taking genuine interest and passion in it! They usually grow herbs, spices and seeds like their uncle before them, but they occasionally branch out and attempt to grow other crops to satisfy their curiosity!
Other people are the bane of their existence however; if they could live on their farm in isolation, they absolutely would.
As a child, their issues with others mainly arose due to their temper, often starting arguments and lashing out at them, driving the other kids off and leaving them alone. However, even in the rare times they were calm, they wouldn’t interact with the other kids anyways. They wouldn’t approach them, and wouldn’t talk to the other children if they approached Hickory - it seemed like they genuinely preferred to be on their own to the adults, although part of it was they were likely too nervous to engage with the other children.
They did have one friend though, their younger cousin Clancy! However, that friendship was short-lived, as Hickory eventually physically lashed out and injured their younger cousin. Understandably enough, Hickory’s aunt and uncle did not want them around Clancy anymore, and refused to talk to Hickory’s parents too. As an adult, Hickory regrets what they did to their cousin and does want to apologise, but they have no way of getting in touch with him, and they don’t believe that he would appreciate them reaching out anyways.
They have grown to be a lot calmer as an adult, and know how to just walk away if someone is genuinely frustrating them, but people still remain a struggle for them - mainly due to their social anxiety that was masked by their anger issues as a child.
Despite many’s first impressions of Hickory being ‘scary’ (they are almost 9 feet tall, and very strong from farm work) they are actually quite timid, finding it almost impossible to start conversations, and struggling to hold them… This has led to them finding selling their crops to be their hardest part of their job, especially now their uncle has retired, and they can’t just let him deal with other people. Most of their regulars are merchants who are used to Hickory’s timidness and eccentricities, but also know their crops are good quality!
Unfortunately though, they don’t have any friends - Hickory doesn’t leave the farm often enough to make friends. However they do aim to visit their uncle once every month, making sure their crops will survive the couple of days they’re absent! They enjoy catching up with each other, although their uncle does worry about how much his nibling seems to isolate themself.
