How to build biking habits for a kid
Building biking habits for a kid can be a fun and healthy way to introduce them to physical activity and outdoor adventures. Here are some steps to help you encourage biking habits in children:
Choose the Right Bike: Ensure that your child has a bike that fits them properly. It should not be too big or too small. Proper fit is essential for comfort and safety.
Safety First:
Make sure your child wears a helmet every time they ride.
Teach them the basic rules of the road and the importance of following traffic signs and signals.
Check that the bike has working brakes and reflectors. Add lights if they will be riding in low-light conditions.
Lead by Example: Kids often emulate their parents or older siblings. If you regularly ride a bike, it can motivate your child to do the same.
Start Early: The earlier you introduce biking, the easier it is for kids to adopt it as a habit. Many children start with a balance bike (a bike without pedals) to learn balance and coordination before transitioning to a pedal bike.
Gradual Progression: Begin with short rides and gradually increase the distance as your child becomes more comfortable and confident. Make sure the routes are age-appropriate and safe.
Family Outings: Plan family bike outings to parks, trails, or other scenic locations. Make these trips enjoyable and memorable experiences.
Fun Accessories: Let your child choose fun accessories for their bike like a bell, a basket, or colorful streamers. This personalization can make biking more exciting.
Set Goals: Help your child set achievable biking goals. This could be a certain distance they want to reach, mastering a specific skill (e.g., riding with no training wheels), or participating in a family bike race.
Create a Routine: Establish a routine for biking. Whether it's a daily ride after school or a weekend family ride, consistency helps build habits.
Join a Group: Look for local biking clubs or groups for kids. Riding with peers can be motivating and a great way for kids to make friends who share their interests.
Reward System: Consider implementing a reward system to encourage regular biking. For example, your child could earn rewards for completing a certain number of rides or hitting a distance milestone.
Safety Check: Teach your child basic bike maintenance and safety checks. This includes checking tire pressure, ensuring the brakes work, and keeping the chain lubricated.
Make it Fun: Keep the focus on fun and adventure rather than exercise. Plan scavenger hunts, treasure hunts, or themed rides to make biking enjoyable.
Stay Positive: Encourage and praise your child's efforts, whether they are just starting or improving their skills. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in building habits.
Stay Involved: Continue to ride with your child and show your interest and enthusiasm. Ask them about their biking adventures and listen to their stories.
Remember that every child is different, so be patient and adjust your approach based on their interests and comfort level. The goal is to make biking a lifelong habit that they enjoy.

DID SOMEONE SAY FILIPINO TWST (no one did it's just me 😔)
Tumblr media
below the cut is stock photos of what is a trike/tricycle in the philippines (what they’re riding on) if you're unfamiliar!! and also some rambling about my heartshackle trio ;;;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i referenced the one on the left, there's usually supposed to be a screen where ace is popping out (and also i think deuce would prefer riding the one on the right where it's an actual motorcycle and not just a bike)
i like to think that the trio found this tricycle trashed and broken somewhere and they tried to fixed it up so they could all take a ride on it
ace and deuce kinda fought who’ll be the first to ride it and deuce only won because they all agreed deuce was the one who actually knew (for the most part) how to fix the thing
++++ some more concepts/hcs between them in this au(???) 😳
all three of them are childhood friends who grew up in the same neighborhood and went to the same elementary school. unfortunately in high school they ended up in different schools, but they all still remained close friends 🥹
grim exists but as a regular cat who “belongs” to yuuna (yuuna was just grim’s favorite out of the three). technically he’s just a neighborhood stray, yuuna can’t really keep him as a pet at home (and neither can ace/deuce) but somehow grim keeps finding the heartshackle trio whenever they’re all together. and so grim just became part of the group.
yuuna has a physical album of photos dedicated to all the times they go to jollibee. they take a photo with the jollibee statue every single time they all go there.

Fabulous news out of my local youth arts nonprofit.
Their improvisation comedy class simply had too many signups this semester. I stepped in as an assistant teacher so the class could work in smaller groups and get students more specialized experiences, but myself and the director agreed this was a temporary solution.
I proposed a longer-term solution at the start of the semester and this week it was APPROVED.
Next semester, our advanced improvisation students have the chance to participate in a TTRPG campaign as an alternative to the class. This means our students who have a year or more of experience with both theatre basics and improvisational comedy now have the opportunity to try a roleplay-focused long-form improv story. We will both be actively playing the game and also discussing the shared skills of RP and performance, like character building, teamwork, and improvised dialogue.
I am so excited to tell my students and hope they get excited too. Depending on class sizes, I typically coach middle or high school students, but based on the extraordinary abilities of some of our younger students this year, this new class is going to be opened to experienced 5th+ graders. (For non-Americans, 5th graders are typically 10-11 years old.)
If you have experience with both live performance and tabletop roleplay, I'd love to hear your thoughts. For the sake of media familiarity, I'm starting my students with the recently updated 5e DnD handbook, but if the class is successful I would love to branch out with them in future semesters to try games that naturally put the focus on kid characters, like Bubblegumshoe or Kids on Bikes.
My nonprofit currently utilizes borrowed space but is working to fund the purchase of their own building. If that happened in the future and we had student interest, I would love to expand this class feature and host multiple sessions in a week and get more kids involved.

The gradual degradation of Brennan's costume in Never Stop Blowing Up is a common environmental story telling trope in 80s action movies where the main character get progressively more injured but doesn't let it slow him down as he keeps fighting.
In a horror movie, these injuries would be slowing the character down, putting them in more peril, showing weakness and anguish.
In Action, it (at least) borders on comical how little injuries can matter - as Brennan showed in the hospital scene. Action is defiance of and triumph over death, it's about feeling like you're insanely tough, a badass who can defeat and overcome anyone and anything (physically).
The art and make up team here are telling a story. This is a character who exists parallel to our main story who is going through his own action journey, patching himself up when he can as he goes but bleeding through those bandages later as he rips a wound open that probably needed stitches but he doesn't have TIME to get a much needed blood transfusion, goddamnit, he's gotta get to the thing with the thing before the bad thing happens.
There's so many little interesting details unraveling in the story the make up is telling, like having one side of the body clearly have gotten exposed to an explosion. Meanwhile the cut on his left arm goes from open, to cleanly bandaged, to bleeding through the bandage. The latest episode brings us to the point in the movie where he finally just throws off the torn and bloodied dress shirt.
Which is part of action stories too, where the main character moves further and further from someone who was trying to be a Business Adult in the Real World before shit hits the fan and the battle can't be fought by a civilized man in a suit and tie, it's gonna get fuckin messy.
(as always please be mindful and respectful anytime you think about commenting on a performer's appearance).

Never Stop Blowing Up (System)
9 key abilities Stunts, Brawl, Tough, Tech, Weapons, Drive, Sneak, Wits, and Hot
Each ability starts a d4
On a roll of the maximum number on a die the die explodes and you roll an additional die of the next higher value
On an explosion the die of that ability is permanently upgraded to the next level of die
On a failed check the player is awarded a turbo token which can be used to increase a future roll (1 token +1 for your own roll and 2 tokens for 1 point increase for another player)
If adding a point to your roll would reach the maximum the die explodes
If not in a stressful situation you can use half the of the number on the die as the roll (d4 = 2)

my silly little headcanon is that for the rest of their lives ben calls eddie ‘doc’ affectionately after eddie fixes him up. imagine the adult losers meeting at jade of the orient and ben saying softly & fondly “hey, doc, long time no see” as he pulls eddie in for a hug. imagine ben running back out of eddie’s room at the townhouse and crouching next to him with his hand on his shoulder and saying “shit, doc, are you okay?” while bev tends to his stab wound
like. bro. that shit’s fucking cute and is actually fact i’ve just decided

I feel like Mentopolis is the perfect Dimension 20 season to introduce new viewers. Like, only six episodes, with players known outside the TTRPG space, in one of D20's classic parody settings, to say nothing of its general quality. I don't know that it's necessarily my favorite season, but it's definitely up there, and definitely the one to show people who don't "get it."
