Ch'mar, zal'a Vlaakith, which several Githyanki phrase lists tell me means "Vlaakith's will above all," appears quite a few times in Baldur's Gate 3. Here's why I find it a uniquely amusing (and, in Vlaakith's case, appropriate) fantasy battle cry and proclamation.

First, let's hear our girl Lae'zel delivering it with great conviction:

Now, "čmar" - pronounced pretty much exactly how you just heard except you'd usually roll that r a tiny bit more - means "anus" in several South Slavic languages, including my own native language.

Meanwhile, "zlo" means "evil" and "zala" is the genitive plural of it, making it essentially "of evils".

Thus, delightfully, a bunch of hardline Githyanki soldiers in this game are shouting a completely grammatically accurate and very nicely pronounced "the asshole of many evils, Vlaakith". Sounds about right, I'd say.

Russia just freed SIXTEEN political prisoners in a prisoner swap with the West!

Among the released political prisoners are:

Oleg Orlov, a longtime dissident and the co-chair of Memorial, an organization created in 1989 to chronicle the USSR's human rights abuses and educate Russians about the history of political repression;

Sasha Skochilenko, an LGBTQ artist who was imprisoned in April 2022 for replacing price tags at grocery stores with data about Russian destruction in Ukraine, deemed treasonous under Russia's "fake news" law;

Vladimir Kara-Murza, a political dissident who was fundamental in bringing about the Magnitsky Act to sanction Russian human rights abusers, and who was poisoned twice by the KGB in attempted assassinations before being sentenced to 25 years in prison for "treason";

Evan Gershkovich, a young American journalist who was arrested in Russia while reporting for the Wall Streeet Journal in March 2023 and sentenced to 16 years in prison for "espionage";

Paul Whelan, American former Marine who was arrested in 2018 and sentenced to 16 years of hard labor for "espionage";

Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty who was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison for spreading "fake news" about the war in Ukraine;

Andrei Pivovarov, an opposition activist who headed the pro-democracy organization Open Russia before being imprisoned in a Siberian penal colony infamous for its torture of prisoners;

Ilya Yashin, a young opposition politician who was sentenced to 8.5 years in prison for publishing YouTube videos about the war in Ukraine; when Russian authorities "encouraged" him to leave the country, he chose instead to stay;

Lilia Chanysheva, opposition activist and regional coordinator of Navalny HQ; in her final speech before the Russian court, she tried in vain to appeal to the judge's sense of empathy: "If you put me in jail for 12 years, I will be too old to bear a child. Give me a chance to be a mother!";

Kevin Lik, a dual German-Russian citizen who was arrested as a minor for "photographing military sites" shortly before the 2022 invasion of Ukraine; he was the youngest person ever to be convicted of treason in Russia;

Rico Krieger, a German man sentenced to death in Belarus for supposedly planting explosives on a railroad track to help the Ukrainian army;

Dieter Voronin, a dual German-Russian citizen and political scientist who was arrested in 2021 in connection to a treason case involving Russian journalist Ivan Safronov;

Patrick Schobel, a German man arrested in February 2024 at the Pulkovo International Airport in St Petersburg when customs officers found cannabis gummies in his luggage, in a scenario very similar to that of Brittney Griner;

German Moyzhes, a dual German-Russian citizen and lawyer who was charged with treason for helping Russians obtain European residency permits;

Vadim Ostanin, opposition activist and Navalny associate arrested in 2021 for his work with Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation;

Ksenia Fadeyeva, dissident and Navalny associate sentenced to 9 years in prison.

Interview with Wakana

--This will be Kalafina's first live performance in about seven years. How did you feel when you found out that the concert was going to be held?

"On January 23rd, 2018, we held our 10th Anniversary LIVE at Nippon Budokan, and on March 30th we appeared on stage on the opening day of our 'Kalafina 10th Anniversary Film', which ended up being our last public appearance as a trio. Seven years have passed since then so I'm really happy that we can perform live again as Kalafina. Many people worked hard to make this happen, and when the three of us found out about this opportunity, I thought to myself, 'if we're allowed to perform live again, I definitely want to do it!' Turns out the three of us all felt the same way about this."

--How did you feel when the three of you first got together to sing during a live rehearsal?

"The first rehearsal was meant to be a sort of 'voice tuning' where we just sang through the entire setlist. It had been six years since I last sang with the two of them, so I was strangely nervous at first *laughs*. But as soon as we started singing, all my memories came back and I was able to adjust my singing technique right away, knowing exactly what to do and where to change certain parts. The accumulation of our 10 years as Kalafina has remained with me, and I was surprised at how easily we were able to just pick up where we left off, we quickly made up for the time we had spent apart. There was no need to worry about anything."

--What did the three of you talk about at that time?

"I think that singing helped us connect with each other more than talking. I was in a choir when I was in elementary school, and I started singing gospel in high school, so I've always loved singing with other people. By singing and giving each other tips, we were able to communicate with each other, and thanks to the other two I was able to release my vocal power. It was a lot of fun 'fine-tuning our voices'."

--Please tell us your thoughts on Hikaru and Keiko's vocals.

"It's something I've always felt, but each of us has a completely different vocal quality, but when the three of us sing together, something comes together, and a mysterious harmony is born. When I sang together with Hikaru and Keiko for the first time in a long while, I felt a special feeling that resonated in my heart, like 'ah, yes, this is it. This is something that only Kalafina can do, and no one else can'."

--Kalafina's music has a unique worldview, right?

"Yes, wonderful songs were written for us with a deep understanding of each of our voices, bringing out the best in us, both in melody and harmony. Also, we pushed ourselves to the very limits of our skills at that time, and whenever we sing these songs it makes me feel a sort of loving whip on my back, saying, 'you can go a little further, right?' *laughs*"

--I think the range of your expression definitely expanded throughout the years of your activities.

"With each song we received, my desire to sing more dramatically grew. When Kalafina was first formed, we were often told, 'you don't need to assert yourself or have a unique personality. Just be conscious of singing in a straightforward voice.' There is certainly an appeal to songs that are born from doing so, and I have always tried my best to focus on singing in a way that expresses the world of Kalafina's music in the best possible way, but now I think I am able to incorporate my personal expressions into that without infringing on the unique worldview."

--Kalafina was originally created to sing the theme songs for the anime "Kara no Kyokai," so it's only natural that they would place importance on the worldview of the work.

"That's right. We were aiming for a rather 'inorganic' feel to match the work. But by moving away from 'Kara no Kyoukai' and singing a variety of songs, our concept has changed since the early days. We've become able to incorporate more of our own sensibilities and experiences into our songs, and now that we've each spent years doing solo activities, our range of expression has expanded even more. I really feel that none of our experiences have been in vain, all the time we've spent up until now has benefitted us."

--What are your thoughts about all the fans who have continued to love Kalafina for such a long time?

"First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has waited for us until now. What we can do is take in everyone's feelings, draw from them to shape our singing and give back our own feelings of gratitude and joy in the form of music. So for this live performance, I want to sing in a way that will fill the void of seven years in one night. I think it will be a more powerful performance than ever before, so I look forward to seeing you all at the venue."

--Today you had a photo shoot for the pamphlet. Please tell us your impressions of the shoot.

"It was a really fun shoot. During rehearsals we are focused on singing and there isn't much time to chat, but the best thing about a photo shoot like this is that we can be relaxed the whole time. The staff created a wonderful atmosphere, and the three of us being in the same space, chatting for the first time in a long time made me feel like the seven-year hiatus did not even exist. Hearing again how Hikaru and Keiko felt during those seven years and seeing all the photos of the three of us together really made me feel like, 'ah, Kalafina is back’.”

X-Men: From the Ashes Infinity Comics #24

Hey! Guess who showed up in the latest issue of X-Men: From the Ashes Infinity Comics (jeez, that title is a mouthful).

Spoilers & screenshots under the cut...

So issue #22 shows Barnell, Angel, and their children at the airport trying to make a flight to Alaska. Barnell is entertaining the children with stories of the Agents of T.H.A.N.K.S. (self inserts of the family who are Tremendously Heroic Awesome Ninja Knights) and tells them that they are on a secret mission to deliver vegan turkey roll to the X-Men for Thanksgiving. Honestly, it's cute. Unfortunately, little Kara has Minor Symptom Foreshadowing, poor thing. On the plane, the family deals with a nasty Karen who doesn't want to sit next to a mutant. The Karen gets told that there are air travel protections for mutants which is nice, at least with the airline's company policy. Take that Karen! Kara and Barnell hug. End of issue.

Issue #23 picks up with Angel, Barnell, and the family at Merle, Alaska. Specifically at the front door of the X-Men's current HQ. There are warm greetings between the Angel/Barnell family and the X-men. It's declared to be a class reunion by Glob. Beak presents the vegan turkey roll. Scott, of course, does not pick up on the social cues at first and explains how he's sorry but they don't have time for a formal dinner. Turns out Barnell didn't call ahead which Angel gives him grief for (rightly so! That's just rude). Juggernaut give Scott a "be nice" nudge. This prompts Scott to say, "Y'know what...? of course we have time for Dinner!"

Cut to a scene at the dinner table with everyone (except Magneto, Xorn, and Beast) as Kwannon cuts and serves the turkey with a sword. There's a lot of reminiscing. Scott tells a story of something heroic that Barnell did and that impresses Kara. Quentin toasts Barnell. Kwannon expresses her gratitude that after everything, Barnell and Angel still have each other. There's that foreboding cough from Kara again. 😬Barnell peels off to see Hank before Scott can tell him about what's happened to Hank. More cute kid stuff as they play fight with Juggernaut. Ominous panel of Barnell in the elevator. End of issue.

Now that we're caught up, we can discuss issue 24.

Issue #24 opens with the Angel and Barnell's kids as the Agents of T.H.A.N.K.S play fighting with Juggernaut and Magik. Playtime ends when Juggernaut rips a nasty "Uncontainable Tofu Fart!!!" - no, really. "Ew, Cain." Says Magik. This causes Kara to go into a coughing fit. Barnell is watching from above from a balcony. And Hank is watching Barnell from above while hanging from the ceiling. Hank apologizes for missing the holiday dinner. Hank thinks Barnell is coming to see Hank so that Hank can make "the best after-dinner cocktails."

But this comments frustrates Barnell.

Past Hank had agreed to do everything he could to cure her and Barnell is hoping that the cure is ready. Except, this isn't the same Hank. At first, Hank plays around before admitting that he doesn't know Barnell or anything that he's talking about.

Barnell is near tears asking if Hank lied to him when the shadow of a figure sitting in a hovering chair looms behind him.

The guy just can not NOT manspread.

Max explains what exactly is going on with Hank:

Maybe it was for the greater good, but that's little comfort to Barnell. He was depending on Hank to save his daughter.

Barnell is understandably devastated. He goes back downstairs to the happy scene of the kids playing with the X-Men. There's an adorable moment where Scott is showing one of the kids (I think Kara) how his visor works, "--Then I push this button here and ZAP!" Barnell goes to Angel sitting by Scott and maybe Kara and tells her that it's time. Angel interprets this to mean that it's time to give Kara the cure and expresses her relief.

But Burnell corrects her, "No. Time to go home." Angel starts to argue but Barnell simply cuts her off. "Angel. Please."

The next scene is the family leaving the X-Men HQ. Angel covers her face saying, "Oh. God." having figured out what it means to just leave. Behind them, the X-Men without Hank, Xorn, and Magneto are waving their goodbyes with smiles on their faces, oblivious to the conversation that just happened upstairs. And to the emotional turmoil that Burnell and Angel are going through.

...And I am destroyed! If this plot line is forgotten by the powers that be, I will never recover. NEVER RECOVER. Plus, it would reflect horribly on the X-Men. I feel for Angel and Barnell. Infinity Comics continues to be one of the better "From the Ashes" comics.

It is interesting that in two different Infinity Comic stories, written by two different writers, they touched on or subtly referenced what happened to Max's daughter, Anya. Does that mean this backstory is going to be important later on in the main story? And I have to say, the moments that Max is comforting other people is probably my favorite from the past year.

I'm curious to see where this is all going?
