This quote is evidence that Jyn Erso was written to be a foil to Luke Skywalker. Before Rogue One came out, I and a bunch of other fans were speculating Jyn to be Luke's wife and Rey's mom (due to the resemblance to Rey, the speculation about Rey being Luke's daughter, and the parallels between Jyn and Luke (and between Jyn and Mara Jade, Luke's Legends wife, to the point where it seemed like Jyn might become the Disney canon version of Mara)). Even after the film came out, I was still hoping for Jyn to pull a Phil Coulson for that, particularly with that kyber crystal necklace she had.

Years later, after Lucasfilm has mangled up Rey's origins along with the latter two sequels, I haven't completely given up on that idea, but it's been barely on my mind, and I've been torn between that and Jyn's relationship with Cassian Andor. But now, reading that quote has stirred up my feelings towards the former (and from what I've been recently reading about Cassian, he's kind of old for her anyway). It seems like a great opportunity that Lucasfilm has wasted.

wow rogue one is really a love letter to the unnamed fighter. no act of help is too small, every deed causes a ripple. luke showed up to blow the death star, and there was the plan to do it--countless of people died to get him that, and luke knows none of them. how many rebel planes get shot down every battle? how many civilians die in explosions? how many died to get the plans to luke? rogue one says you. and you and you and you. every one of you. what will come of it? who knows. something.

It breaks my heart to say it, but Stormpilot/Finnpoe has been eliminated. However, they had a fantastic run, and the boys are now free to set off to a better, alternative universe where Disney weren’t cowards Finnpoe was canon.

Two different themes made by two different composers for two different characters in two different movies, and yet it's almost as if they were coordinated and synchronized to fit together. And Lucasfilm wondered why people thought that these two women were mother and daughter, especially since they looked so alike and were just the right ages for it!

They also both fit well with Luke's theme, so maybe that should say something.

Yes, and in addition to that, I just realized that before Orson Krennic found them, the Ersos were hiding out in a homestead on a farm on Lah'mu. Jyn Erso grew up on a farm, just like Luke! If Lucasfilm didn't want us to ship them, they shouldn't have given us so many parallels between them and a potential daughter who resembles and parallels both of them.

It's been long confirmed that "Rey Palpatine" was something that they came up with at the last minute. There's also been rumors that JJ Abrams had made a whole other cut of TROS, with Rey as Luke's daughter, before the executives hijacked the project and reshot everything. If they could only give us that cut like they gave us Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League and at least keep the Skymom vague enough that we could plug in Jyn, it could possibly make up for everything. But we'd probably have to wait until Lucasfilm crashes and burns so that someone else can take over and reboot everything after Rogue One.

SkyRogue could have been so good, so poetic. If the rumors are true and Jyn’s father was a leading scientist in creating the Death Star who hated his creation and helped to take it down then Rey would have two grandfathers who helped build something monstrous and oppressive. Two grandfathers who then helped their children demolish the horrors that they had created. The poetic parallels. The history of darkness and light. It would have been so good.

Andor recontextualizes the whole original trilogy, to the point that it actually makes me like it more. Like originally, A New Hope and the rest are just a standard hero's journey/chosen-one story about some dude who does training montages and then kills an evil wizard. But when you add in Andor and Rogue One, you have an entire history of the struggle to build and the struggle to destroy the Death Star. You know the many who fought and died over decades, what the existence of the Empire actually means, and what they want to do with the Death Star once finished.

Suddenly Luke isn't some magical boy, he's just a specially talented, well-placed person. He stands on the shoulders of millions who died to get him to where he needed to be so he could do the thing they needed him to do to alleviate everyone's oppression. According to Rogue One he's not even the only person with jedi potential in the resistance! He's just the only one to get any real training or equipment. Luke may be important, but he's not special. The whole saga makes Luke feel normal, and it does so by populating the universe with heroes.

This is the ideal of what prequels should be: standing strong as stories in their own right, while adding to the narrative power of the original story by giving it more context.
