hi i'm sure this doesn't mean much coming from an anon stranger (& the last time i was experiencing fresh grief i wanted to bite anyone who offered me anything like sympathy) so feel free to tell me to fuck off, but i'm sorry about your brother and i hope you're taking care of yourself.

Thank you, anon 🤎 Grief is so individualized, not even only from person to person, but from loss to loss. It's hard to know what to say, much harder to know where someone else is in their grief. Right now, I'm in a place where your sincerity means a lot.

I will be okay. I'm not sure if this grief can be called fresh, despite the suddenness of his death, if only because I've been grieving my family for a few years now after going no-contact. At the same time, it's still so difficult to conceptualize a world without him, instead of a world where we're just not talking for right now.

He tormented me when we were kids. He also used to balance me on his skateboard because I was too afraid to learn how to ride a bike, but I would wear myself out chasing after the older kids around the neighborhood. He's almost the same age that our maternal grandfather was when he died, and my eldest nephew is the exact same age as our mother was. Some small part of me had to be reminded that Death Note didn't make up heart attacks; that they happen to people with my brother's health (which was bad, he was a severe alcoholic). My dad broke the news by sending an email to my work address. He wrote the entire message after the default iPhone signature. This is the second time he's had to bury an adopted son. I didn't even know my eldest brother was my half-brother until I was 10. My eldest nephew is 10.

I think it will take some time to process.
