1981: The Lesbian in Literature (3rd edition) by Barbara Grier
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grier Ratings: During the 1960s, while Grier worked at The Ladder, she was involved in the creation of a bibliography of lesbian literature, The Lesbian in Literature. She used the name Gene Damon for that bibliography, but her rating system for lesbian literature would come to be known as Grier Ratings. Grier rated lesbian literature on a letter scale for how prominent the lesbian subject was to the story and a range of 1 to 3 asterisks for the quality of the representation:
๐Ÿ…ฐ๏ธโญโญโญ A rating of 'A***' had lesbian characters with very sympathetic portrayals.
๐Ÿ…ฐ๏ธ A rating of 'A' without an asterisk meant there was a major lesbian component but not sympathetically portrayed.
๐Ÿ…ฑ๏ธ / ยฉ๏ธ The B and C ratings were for works with lesbian subplots or suppressed/coded lesbian themes.
๐Ÿšฎ Books that contained voyeuristic and demeaning representations of lesbians were rated as 'T (Trash)'.
Barbara Grier (1933--2011) is credited for having built the lesbian book industry. After editing The Ladder magazine, published by the lesbian civil rights group Daughters of Bilitis, she co-founded a lesbian book-publishing company Naiad Press, which achieved publicity and became the world's largest publisher of lesbian books. She built a major collection of lesbian literature, catalogued with detailed indexing of topics.
Grier realized she was a lesbian at age twelve after researching the topic at the library. She told her mother that she was homosexual, and her mother replied, "No, because you're a woman, you're a lesbian. And since 12 years old is too young to make such a decision, let's wait six months before we tell the newspapers." Yet, Grier's mother was supportive. When Grier was fifteen, her mother gifted her a copy of The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall and Of Lena Geyer (1936) by Marcia Davenport. This would be the start of Grier's collection of lesbian literature. She describes her collection of lesbian-themed books as Lesbiana, a collection that was fueled by a "love affair with lesbian publishing."
In 1957, Grier subscribed to The Ladder, a magazine edited by members of the Daughters of Bilitis. Grier began writing book reviews for The Ladder, using multiple pen names in her writings including Gene Damon, Marilyn Barrow, Gladys Casey, Terry Cook, Dorthy Lyle, Vern Niven, Lennox Strong, and Lee Stuart. The Ladder was the center of Grier's life in the 1950s and 60s. Some issues were completely written by her. Although it was primarily compiled by Grier, hundreds of women contributed information for this book.
In 1973, Grier co-founded Naiad Press along with Donna McBride, Anyda Marchant, and Muriel Crawford (Marchant's partner). They founded the venture with $2,000 pooled between them. Grier and McBride ran Naiad from Kansas City until 1980 when it relocated to Tallahassee, Florida. Both Grier and McBride continued to work other full-time jobs until 1982 when they dedicated all their time to the publishing company. Naiad Press went on to become the world's largest publisher of lesbian books.
Some complained that the books published by Naiad Press were always romances or mysteries with happy endings. But Grier said repeatedly that what she wanted was to reach the lesbians in Middle America who were in the closet and who deserved to have books about their lives, too.
Naiad's inventory included mysteries, romances, and science fiction novels. The press also reprinted classics of lesbian writing, including Ann Bannon's Beebo Brinker series. Naiad also produced non-fiction books. Rosemary Curb and Nancy Manahan's Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence (1985) was among the most successful. Naiad Press' most controversial publication was Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence, a work of non-fiction that was banned in Boston and criticized by the Catholic Church. Grier paid ex-nuns Rosemary Kurb and Nancy Manahan a half million dollars for the book which landed Grier on numerous talk shows.
By 1994, the company had a staff of 8 and projected sales of $1.8 million US. In 1992, Grier and McBride donated Naiad's entire collection to the San Francisco Public Library, which consisted of a tractor trailer full of 14,000 books estimated at $400,000 US.
Grier and McBride retired in 2005. They gradually let their books go out of print before closing Naiad Press' doors. The heir to Naiad Press became Bella Books of Ferndale, Michigan. Bella Books was founded in 2001 by Kelly Smith, who spent eighteen months working for Naiad in the late 1990s. Grier was very supportive of Bella Books, and noted that almost all of the Naiad writers have signed on with Smith.

โ€œJudaism is inherently gay,โ€ Ben Platt explains as he marries his longtime boyfriend
Actors Ben Platt and Noah Galvin got married over Labor Day weekend in a days-long celebration in Manhattan and Brooklyn that earned a Vogue magazine shoot and an โ€œinside lookโ€ with the pair of Broadway royalty. One celebrity observer described the wedding festivities as โ€œvery gay and very Jewish.โ€ Related Brides tie the knot at โ€œfairytaleโ€ Bridgerton-themed regal wedding โ€œWe felt like royalty,โ€ the couple says. The โ€œdress to danceโ€ theme played out across several venues, beginning on Friday with a Shabbat welcome and rehearsal dinner at the Angel Orensanz Foundation on the Lower East Side, a restored synagogue thatโ€™s now an art gallery and performance space. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The couple wore matching Thom Browne, with Noah donning a suit jacket and pants, and Ben in a blazer and skirt. โ€œFor our Shabbat rehearsal dinner, I wanted to be a bride, so I wore a skirt,โ€ Platt stated. The meal was catered by Brooklyn hotspot Laser Wolf, where the pair got engaged. Platt and Galvin, both creatures of the New York theater world, have known each other since 2015, but only got together in 2020. Platt, famous for his Tony Award-winning performance in Dear Evan Hanson, was replaced in the titular role by Galvin in 2017. The party continued on Saturday with cocktails at Cellar Dog in the West Village before the nuptials on Sunday at Pioneer Works in Brooklynโ€™s Red Hook neighborhood. The couple went creamsicle for their wedding day outfits, with Galvin sporting a French workwear-inspired set with lace button-down and Platt in a 70โ€™s-styled cream suit and button-down to match his spouse. Cream-colored skull caps with navy trim topped off the pretty ensembles. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vogue Weddings (@vogueweddings) The pair exchanged matching diamond and birthstone wedding bands by Grace Lee; Ben added an heirloom gold ring that once belonged to his gay grand-uncle Gary. โ€œOur moms are terrible secret-keepers, but somehow managed to surprise us by singing their first ever duet to us at the end of the ceremony, a classic Jewish wedding song in beautiful harmony,โ€ Ben wrote on Insta, accompanying a pic of the women singing. With the ceremony behind them โ€”ย the couple stomped their glasses, โ€œand they broke, thank god!โ€ Galvin said โ€”ย a โ€œragingโ€ hora commenced. โ€œDuring the hora comes shtick, which is when groups of family and friends do a series of personalized bits replete with props and costumes โ€” Judaism is inherently gay,โ€ Platt explained. The weekend finally ended at Sunnyโ€™s Bar in Brooklyn, with a Shake Shack truck parked out front and a requisite musical theatre sing-along with the coupleโ€™s besties Beanie Feldstein, Zoey Deutch, Micaela Diamond, Cynthia Erivo, and Lena Waithe joining family and more friends to sing out what will surely be the gay-Jewish-New York theatre world wedding of the year. http://dlvr.it/TCtm9w

[5] This was, in some way, also confirmed by pages 97, 101, and 104 which list a "Packard, Mrs. Frank" and "Packard, Lena" in the town, but no John H. Packard.
[6] In 1920 he lived on 37 John Street. In 1930, he lived on 261 South Street. In 1935, he lived at 405 High Street. From 1938-1940, he lived 15 Pine Street. From 1942-1950, seemingly, he lived at 16 Chamberlin Ave.

Likely 20-year-old John Marshall who was noted as a machinist who worked at a machinist shop, and 59-year-old Frank B. Stanton as a janitor at an electric plant were also working at the paper mill.

Also see Wikipedia pages "Massachusetts 1913 law" which invalidated marriages of non-residents if marriage was invalid in state they lived and repealed in 2008 (its funny that a referendum was never brought in 2008 because those who repealed it was too cowardly and afraid of being harassed as they should be as reinstating the law is homophobic), and "LGBT rights in Massachusetts" along with
the article "Great Cities for LGBTQ Folks in Massachusetts" (lists Boston, Provincetown, Salem, and Cambridge as cities), "45 Years of Queer: A Massachusetts LGBTQ History" (says "from the start of the LGBTQ rights movement in the 1970s, Massachusetts has been a pioneer in supporting the LGBTQ community"), "Springfield Mass. Additionally, Gay Cities only has listings for four places in Massachusetts: Boston, Worchester, Provincetown, and Northampton.

It appears that the LGBT Coalition in Western Massachusetts is currently defunct when looking at their LinkedIn page (also here) along with pages on visithampshirecounty.com, Guidestar, ProPublica, and Gay Cities. There is currently a Facebook Group called Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut LGBTQ Alliance, which seems semi-active.
[10] The others living in the household were the 16-year-old stepdaughter of Herbert (Ruth E. Pierce), 72-year-old lodger Rhoda Peterson, Harriet's 82-year-old mother (Hannah M. Whitney), and a six-year-old lodger (Dorothy G. Shaw)

Also for context is the 1910 census, the first one he appears in: 1910 United States Federal Census for James L Fitzgibbons, Massachusetts, Berkshire, Otis, District 0064, Year: 1910; Census Place: Otis, Berkshire, Massachusetts; Roll: T624_572; Page: 7A; Enumeration District: 0064; FHL microfilm: 1374585. This may be him in the 1920 census, although it can't be confirmed: 1920 United States Federal Census for James Fitz-Gibbons, Massachusetts, Worcester, Worcester Ward 5, District 0262, Year: 1920; Census Place: Worcester Ward 5, Worcester, Massachusetts; Roll: T625_750; Page: 3B; Enumeration District: 262.
Note: This was originally posted on July 10, 2023 on the main Packed with Packards WordPress blog (it can also be found on the Wayback Machine here). My research is still ongoing, so some conclusions in this piece may change in the future.

Itโ€™s fake dating, isnโ€™t it?
Supergirl, Lena Luthor x Reader, Reader insert.
Word Count: 2380.
โ€œLena, this is insane.โ€ You sit on the couch in Lenaโ€™s office. She invited you over under the pretense of having lunch together. You, never one to deny Lena of anything (especially not food) accepted promptly. But she clearly had selfish reasons to do so.
โ€œItโ€™s not!โ€ She comes closer, sitting in front of you, with food in both hands. You huff, not buying it.
โ€œYou know I love you and that Iโ€™d do anything for you.โ€ She opens a thankful smile, like sheโ€™s trying to tell you that she feels the same. โ€œBut you also know that everyone will see right through us.โ€
Itโ€™s true, and she knows that. But she defends herself like you just said the most absurd thing in the universe.
โ€œWe could be dating!โ€ She exclaims, so sure, that you canโ€™t help but laugh.
You could. But youโ€™re not. And the fact that she thinks you two could be dating only shines a light on what youโ€™ve been thinking all this time since youโ€™ve met her. You two are obviously in some weird relationship that would probably be described as dating by anyone, if you two just had the courage to simply kiss.
โ€œLeeโ€ฆโ€ you start but she reaches for your hand in the middle of the couch, squeezing it tenderly.
โ€œDarling, you donโ€™t have to pretend to be my date if you donโ€™t want to. But honestly, thereโ€™s no one else I trust more than you.โ€
It does things to you. The sweetness of her tone, her hand on yours, her eyes practically burning through your skin. It makes you feel so many things, you have to ignore it so you can talk again.
โ€œOh wow, I feel so special. You trust me enough to fake date you.โ€ You joke and Lena smiles, well aware of your sarcastic side.
She doesnโ€™t push you again. Sheโ€™s made her request, now itโ€™s up to you to accept it or not.
You know she wouldnโ€™t be upset if you said no, for whatever reason. But deep inside you also know youโ€™d like to see what it's like to be Lenaโ€™s girlfriend, even if it's just pretend.
You sigh. โ€œSo, weโ€™ll be holding hands and kissing as a joke?โ€
Lena gives you a full-hearted laugh that bright up the entire universe. You canโ€™t help but smile too. โ€œWe donโ€™t have to kiss.โ€
โ€œAh, see? You lost me again.โ€ You shrug it off like you always do. This whole flirting situation is not new in the relationship. But itโ€™s always a joke, so none of you have to do something about it.
โ€œAre you implying youโ€™d like to kiss me, Y/N?โ€ Lena quirks an eyebrow at you.
โ€œAm I now?โ€ You donโ€™t think you are implying. You think you are confessing.
You stare at her lips thinking what would be like to kiss her. To actually do it. To finally have it out in the open how you truly feel about her. Lena licks her lips, painted red by her favorite lipstick, and yours for whatโ€™s worth, and your mouth runs dry right away.
โ€œSo? Youโ€™re in?โ€ She asks and you blink away from her lips.
You sigh, defeated. You canโ€™t say no to Lena and goddamn it, does she know that! Her smile shows how aware she is of this fact.
โ€œWe donโ€™t have to lie to our friends, do we? I mean, Kara will see right through you and Nia through me. You know we canโ€™t lie to those two.โ€
โ€œWe have to! If we want to fool everyone else. You know how theyโ€™re anything but subtle.โ€ Lena says and you agree with your head. Itโ€™s true, you can practically see both friends giggling every time you and Lena would try to fool anyone.
โ€œOk, fine. But Iโ€™m telling them you were the one that wanted to lie to them in the first place.โ€
โ€œFair. Iโ€™ll take the blame. Itโ€™s what girlfriends are for, darling.โ€ Lena winks and you roll your eyes with a smile on your lips.
โ€œAlright. It seems that youโ€™ve got yourself a girlfriend, baby.โ€
Itโ€™s not a real date. You shouldn't be sweating through your dress like you are right now. Lena sent you your outfit for this night a couple days ago. Youโ€™ve been trying it on ever since. You donโ€™t think youโ€™ve ever owned something this nice.
You look good. You guess. You are supposed to, anyway. You are Lena Luthorโ€™s date to a L Corp event. Itโ€™s not like you could look any less nice than how you do right now, but well, you like the feeling of looking pretty for her.
โ€œYou are beautiful, darling.โ€ Lena says, as soon as you slide in her car. Your cheeks flush red with the compliment, and you smile.
โ€œNot more than you, baby.โ€ You reach for Lenaโ€™s hand, squeezing it.
Itโ€™s a quiet car ride, but one that is filled with anticipation. How well can you fake being Lenaโ€™s girlfriend? And how much of it is actually faking?
Your hands are sweaty, you know because when she reaches to grab it to help you out of the car, you have to clean it on your dress first.
โ€œWeโ€™ll be alright, darling.โ€ She assures you with a smile. โ€œYou look gorgeous. Everyone will be so damn jealous of me.โ€
You laugh at the compliment and the lie. Impossible. Just look at her. Everyone will want to be you and not the other way around.
โ€œHey!โ€ You both see Kara as soon as you walk in. โ€œYou two look great. Did you come together?โ€
โ€œYeah.โ€ You agree. Alex and Kelly soon join in as well. โ€œHey guys.โ€
โ€œWhy do you guys look like youโ€™re going to prom?โ€ Alex asks with a smile, because your dress fits perfectly with Lenaโ€™s suit.
โ€œWell, thatโ€™s probably because Y/N is here as my date.โ€ Lena says and you watch Karaโ€™s face lighting up.
โ€œNo way, you two finally admitted youโ€™re in love?โ€ She squeaks her excitement.
โ€œPay up.โ€ Alex raises her hand at Kara, making you and Lena roll your eyes at them.
โ€œYou had a bet?โ€ You furrow your brows. โ€œAbout us?โ€
โ€œWe have many bets you shouldnโ€™t know about.โ€ Alex answers, sticking her hands back at her pockets, because Kara didnโ€™t have the money to pay her right now. โ€œYou get bored and get drunk while hanging out with your sister and your wife, and you tell me what kinds of things you come up with.โ€
โ€œReally, Kelly? You too?โ€ Lena asks in shock, but with a playful smile.
Kelly shrugs. โ€œHey! I bet on your favor, ok?โ€
Soon, Lena needs to make rounds at the party. You hold her hand tightly, while she introduces you around and people comment on how you two look amazing together.
When she starts talking business, you slip out and make your way to the drinks.
Youโ€™ve been feeling weird all night. You should know itโ€™s all fake. You should understand all these compliments about your relationship arenโ€™t real. But you donโ€™t. Every time someone says something likewise, you can only think how right they are and how great you and Lena would be together.
This was a bad idea. How will you go back to just being friends when you want to kiss her so badly? Thank God she said kissing is out of the table. No way you can fake that!
โ€œHey, look, I know I told you we wouldnโ€™t have to kiss, but-โ€ Lena looks behind her furtively and you mimic her actions. โ€œI donโ€™t think theyโ€™re buying it.โ€
You were relieved much too soon.
โ€œOh, so now you want to kiss me, huh?โ€ You joke praying this will drive her far, Lena chuckles instead.
โ€œWould you stop being so difficult?โ€ She gets even closer, putting one hand on your back until your bodies touch. โ€œPlease? Iโ€™ll even let you pretend youโ€™re kissing someone youโ€™ve always wanted to, instead of me.โ€
If only she knew you do not have to pretend at all.
You bring your face closer, close enough you can feel her breath on your skin. So close you canโ€™t look at her lips anymore, only her eyes, that are right in front of yours. Your heart must have skipped a beat, you think. Itโ€™s either that or youโ€™re having a heart attack.
โ€œDid you know one of your eyes is blue-ish?โ€
โ€œI did, darling.โ€ Lena smiles, brushing her lips on the side of yours. โ€œWould you kiss me already?โ€
โ€œIโ€™m putting on a show, baby. Isnโ€™t that what you hired me for?โ€ She has to hold her laugh, and youโ€™re sure sheโ€™s only able to because on that exact moment you raise your hand to the back of her neck, entangling your fingers on her hair. Her breath gets stuck on her lungs, along with the laugh. You slowly pull her hair there, kissing the side of her mouth. Lena lets out a moan, that gives you goosebumps. โ€œYou know, Lee, it scares me how much Iโ€™m willing to do for you.โ€
This seems to bring her back from the suspension she was in, when she opens her eyes again. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to-โ€
โ€œOh, but I want to.โ€
And so you kiss her. Despite your better judgment, you kiss her.
And she kisses you back.
You kiss her so tenderly, but at the same time so full of wanting.
You kiss her for what it feels like hours. Or maybe seconds.
You think you should stop kissing her, but you canโ€™t. How could you? Who would be insane enough to dare to stop?
You love her. Shut up, she is your best friend. But you do, you love her. Even though you shouldnโ€™t because this will ruin the friendship. But OH MY GOD, how much you love her.
You hear someone clearing the throat next to you, and soon you hear Karaโ€™s voice. โ€œGuys, itโ€™s not that weโ€™re not happy you two are together, but um, you guys are putting on a show.โ€
You separate your lips, and step away from Lenaโ€™s space. โ€œRight, yeah.โ€
Lena opens her eyes, still trying to figure out what just happened. โ€œRight, yeah.โ€ She parrots.
You give her a second, to see if sheโ€™ll add something. She doesnโ€™t. โ€œOk, well, I have to admit that Iโ€™ll hate to, but I must share you with the rest of the guests, baby.โ€ You wink, going on with the show. โ€œIโ€™ll see you when youโ€™re done.โ€
โ€œThe next time you fall in love with your friend, please let me know first, so I donโ€™t lose any more bets.โ€ You hear Karaโ€™s words behind you, and you slow down your pace to hear Lenaโ€™s response.
โ€œYou should stop making bets altogether.โ€
You find Nia and Brainy and spend the rest of the party chatting with them. Lena walks by a few times, brushes her hand on yours, but leaves with nothing but a smile at your direction.
Eventually the taste of her lips wears off, drowned by the taste of red wine, and you remember your mission here in the first place. Fake date. Thatโ€™s all.
Itโ€™s late when the event dies off. Kelly and Alex are long gone. Kara snuck out a couple of hours ago for a Supergirl emergency. Brainy finally convinced Nia it was time to leave, almost an hour ago. Youโ€™ve been staring at Lena while she sends away the last guests ever since.
โ€œOh God,โ€ she sighs, exhausted, when she finally gets the chance to come closer. โ€œwhat a long night.โ€
โ€œDid everything work out fine?โ€ You ask, and Lena agrees with her head.
โ€œAnd youโ€™re still here.โ€ She looks at you in pity. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, darling.โ€
โ€œDonโ€™t be absurd. Where else would I be?โ€ You bring her closer for a hug and kiss the top of her head. โ€œShall we?โ€
โ€œYes.โ€ She lets out in one breath. โ€œYes, please.โ€
You make your way out of the party. With Lena clinging to the side of your body. You love her, but this is fake. Itโ€™s nothing new, also. Nothing different from the way you two normally walk.
You open the door of her car, so she can slide in. When she is finally accommodated, you put your head inside. โ€œI know youโ€™re tired, Lee.โ€ No oneโ€™s watching, so thereโ€™s no reason to keep faking it. โ€œYou go straight home and rest, Iโ€™ll get a taxi.โ€
โ€œWhat?โ€ Lenaโ€™s smile wears off, and she holds your hand. โ€œYouโ€™re not coming with me?โ€
You look around to make sure no oneโ€™s watching. โ€œThe show is over. We have to stop now.โ€ You wink at her. โ€œSee you on game night.โ€
She doesnโ€™t let go of your hand. โ€œYouโ€™re insane if you actually think I wouldnโ€™t take my date back home.โ€ She pulls you by the hand. โ€œGet inside please, Y/N.โ€
โ€œAlright.โ€ You slide in. โ€œIf you insist.โ€
When you close the door, the car leaves promptly. Lena doesnโ€™t let go of your hand, and you make no move as well.
โ€œSorry to spring that kiss on you. I know itโ€™s not what we agreed on, but I thought you wouldnโ€™t mind.โ€
โ€œOh me?โ€ You blush. โ€œNo, donโ€™t worry, itโ€™s fine. I mean, kissing was part of the job description all along.โ€
Lena squeezes your hand. โ€œWell, I-โ€ she breathes out. โ€œIf that was fake, then maybe you should start thinking about doing it for a living.โ€
You canโ€™t help the laugh that bubbles inside you, Lena doesnโ€™t laugh with you, confused on why youโ€™re laughing in the first place.
You pull her hands and she slides closer to you. She opens her mouth to ask you what the hell youโ€™re doing, but you crash your lips on hers, taking the breath out of her lungs once again.
When you finally do part your lips from Lenaโ€™s, is because the car already stopped in front of your house.
โ€œDoesnโ€™t feel fake, does it?โ€
Lena clears her throat, cheeks blushing furiously. โ€œActually,โ€ she speaks louder and you know itโ€™s with the driver. โ€œWeโ€™re going back to my place.โ€
You raise a questioning eyebrow at her and she smiles at you, speaking in a lower tone. โ€œThereโ€™s more stuff Iโ€™ve been dying to do with you for years. Let's see what else you're good at faking."
You smile.
"Oh, baby, I'm willing to fake a whole bunch of stuff for you."

hi again whores Iโ€™m back with another oneshot
Its supercorp this time, as suggested by @unbestedmartell
I went back in my notes and found the first supercorp fic I wrote after the season 5 finale, so itโ€™s kinda meh.
***********
"Hey, how's it going in here?" Kara enters Lena's lab, just like she has for the past week. Loudly, and slightly impatient.
"I've almost got it. I don't know where in hell Lex got this technology. The language on it is so complex I can barely grasp what it's saying, much less figure out how to open it." Lena responds, never looking up from the triangular piece of tech they manage to take from Lex.
"Maybe I could help? I'm fluent in multiple alien languages." Lena's eyes snap up to meet Kara's.
"Well it couldn't hurt." Kara's eyes light up, exited to be able to help. "But be careful." Lena emphasizes.
"When am I not?" Kara asks, trying to play coy.
"I have a list, actually.
"Oh shut it."
They work in the lab for hours, translating, Lena slightly staring at Kara when she isn't looking.
She furrows her eyes brows and bites her lip when she's focused on something important, Lena notes.
********
At 4 in the morning, Kara gets to be whiny.
"Lee, I'm tired." Kara complains.
"I know, but your the only one who can translate this with me. We only have 1 side of the triangle left to translate." Lena says, irritated, but also softly because she really doesn't need Kara for this. It's mostly Kryptonian, which is one of the many languages Lena was required to learn by her mother and her brother.ย
โ€œCan't Nia help or something? I need sleep! How can I help people if I don't get any sleep?" Kara pouts.
Kara Danvers is going to be the death of her.
"Fine. You go home, I'll stay. I can manage."ย  Lena turns to Kara, who (last time she checked) was sitting on a chair, with her head on the table in exhaustion. But she was now standing, shaking her head.
"No. You need sleep too, Lee. You aren't a machine." Kara says softly, walking to stand next to Lena, who was still working.
"I have to be. This could be the key to defeating my monster of a brother. I need to keep working." Lena starts to move her hands around the tech, but Kara grabs her hands and turns Lena to face her.
"That doesn't mean you have to get 45 minutes of sleep every night until it's finished. It's okay, Lena. Rest." Lena takes a breath, realizing Kara's hands are still tangled with her own.
"Why do you care so much?" Lena asks quietly.
"What do you mean?" Kara responds, mimicking Lena's vocal levels.
"I mean... don't you just want my help? So after everything is said and done, you can go and be with your friends and family. Celebrate. 'The Evil Witch is Dead' sort of thing." Lena is looking down at the floor, but it's impossible without noticing their hands. And how close they are. And how oddly intimate the moment is.
"God, no. Lena, I want you back in my life. For good. I need you." Kara whispers the last part so quietly Lena almost didn't here her. But she did.
"You lied to me to protect me. Why only me? It seems like everyone knew but me." Lena asks suddenly.
Kara bites her lip, like she does when she's focusing on something. Lena remembers that.
"It... I..."
"Why, Kara?" Lena whispers. She finds the power to move her eyes back up to meet Kara's bright blue gaze. Specks of gray and gold. How has Lena never noticed that before?
"I couldn't lose you. You... you're my everything." Lena's breath gets caught in her throat.
"You're..." Lena starts to repeat, to make sure she heard Kara correctly.
"My everything."ย  Kara confirms.
"Can I kiss you?" Is all Lena responds with.
"Please."
Lena reaches up and removes Kara's glasses, the arm of the glasses fiddling between her fingers as she reached to put Kara's neck in the crook of her elbow. Lena's other hand rests on Kara's waist.
The kiss is slow, sweet. Perfect is the only word Lena can think of to describe this.
When they pull apart, they press their foreheads together.
"Hi." Kara whispers. Lena laughs lightly.
"Hi."

little miss perfect
read on ao3
Kara was singing because of course, she was. Lena could hear her from outside the apartment. She smiled and pushed the door open to see Kara writing and singing as she did. Lena didnโ€™t recognise the song though. She listened carefully to the lyrics.ย
I was adopted when I was two
My parents spoiled me rotten
Relatable. She scoffed at her thought, going over and pressing a kiss to her girlfriendโ€™s cheek before she continued with her after work routine as Kara carried on singing.ย
Often I ask myself, "What did I do?"
To get as far as I've gotten
She almost laughed to herself. She had heard about ten seconds of the song and it was basically describing her. It was ten seconds. She shouldnโ€™t assume.ย
A pretty girl walks by my locker
My heart gives a flutter
But I don't dare utter a word
'Cause that would be absurd behaviour
For little miss perfect
Maybe, she should assume. It made Lena think of Andrea and Veronica and Madison and Emily and Alyssa and Kayla and Chloe and Olivia. Okay, now she was just thinking of the schoolโ€™s cheerleading squad, and maybe some of the girlsโ€™ lacrosse team. She wondered what Mackenzie was doing now, for a second, before she shook all her thoughts away and went to change out of her uncomfortable work clothing.ย
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
No, I can't risk falling off my throne
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Lena listened to Kara as she kept singing. A song canโ€™t just dictate her whole overarching thought process from the ages of eleven to sixteen, when she finally got out of the hell that was high school, that was just weird and mean. This song was weird.ย
Love is something I don't even know
Straight hair, straight A's, straight forward, straight girl
Lena almost choked. This was too accurate. It shouldnโ€™t be so accurate. In her defence, she had the straight hair and straight Aโ€™s (with a 4.0 GPA) and her life was supposedly straight forward and she had to be straight at the time. Her mother needed her to be little miss perfect. Get valedictorian, get a university degree, get a doctorate, work at LuthorCorp, find a guy, get married, have kids. Straight path, easy. She had one job, be the top of everything. Just keep winning. She couldnโ€™t win as a lesbian. So yeah, she denied it. That was normal.ย The song didnโ€™t need to call her out so much.ย
Little miss perfect
That's me
One night, my friend stayed over
We laughed, and drink and order
Lex got her the alcohol and who doesnโ€™t order pizza at a sleepover. It was normal to have sleepovers with your friends. Okay, Lena didnโ€™t have them often and she had begged Lillian for weeks to have one.ย
Something about her drew me in
She was her best friend. Everyone is just close to their best friend at the time. This song was too close to her life.ย
What? It's totally platonic
Just because her current thought process is following her old one doesnโ€™t mean anything. Mackenzie never liked her like that. She told Lena that to be exact. Lena sighed and pulled on Karaโ€™s hoodie and went back to the kitchen to make some food. Kara was still intently focused on the article, her headphones in. The song went on.ย
That night was so exciting
Her smirks were so enticing
Hours speed by like seconds
It was the first sleepover she was allowed. Of course, it was exciting. And Mackenzie just had a signature smirk, everyone in the school knew about it. She would talk about it with Andrea all the time. Then again, Andrea was entirely heterosexual either. Also the understatement of the year considering that time in Italy where Andrea had her headโ€ฆ
โ€œFuck,โ€ Lena muttered as the pan she was holding clattered to the floor.ย
โ€œLee,โ€ Kara stopped singing and pulled her headphones out, speeding over so she was next to her, โ€œAre you okay?โ€ she asked, panicked, picking up the pan.ย
โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m fine,โ€ Lena swallowed, trying to act casual and non-chalant, โ€œGo back to your writing, I donโ€™t want you to lose your flow,โ€ Lena pressed a quick kiss to Karaโ€™s lips before shooing her off.ย
โ€œOkay,โ€ Kara dragged out the final syllable, walking slowly back to the table and her laptop, eyeing Lena suspiciously. Kara didnโ€™t start singing again for a couple of seconds, it sounded like sheโ€™d skipped part of the song but the lyrics just became even more of a personal attack on Lenaโ€™s useless lesbianism.
She takes a sip, I bite my lip
Lip biting is considered by some to be a nervous tick. Her mother was scary, she was constantly nervous in the mansion.ย
She tells a joke, I nearly choke
Lena was drinking at the time. It is common knowledge when you try to laugh and drink at the same time you choke and she was drunk. Drunk Lena is giggly as Kara liked to regularly remind her.ย
She braids my hair, I sit there
Blacking out for the first time
That never happened, at least that never happened.ย
She did brush her hair though. No. Lena pushed the thought away. She wasnโ€™t going to relate to a song about repressed useless lesbianism. That would make Alex too right and Alex being right was not fun.ย
Next thing I know, I lose control
I finally kiss her, but oh no
Shit. Now, that did happen. In her defence. She had no defence. She leaned against the countertop and let her head fall into her hands and groaned. Why? Why? Why? It was like all the high school regrets of fifteen-year-old Lena flooding back.ย
I see a face in my window
It was Lex at the door.ย
Then my brain starts to go
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
No, you can't risk falling off your throne
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Love is something you don't even know
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
You can't risk falling off your throne
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Love
You don't even know
Her thought process was not that. It was:ย
No. No. No. That kiss was good. No. No. No. Lillian would kill her. No. No. No. She was going to be kicked out. No. No. No. Rumours would destroy her bid for student council head. No. Was she gay? No. She had a boyfriend. She was meant to win prom King and Queen with him. Lillian wanted her to. Fuck. Fuck.ย
That was her thought process. Not completely accurate.ย
Why did Lena even care? It was just a song albeit an annoyingly accurate song and her brain worked on overdrive all the time. She was going to have to think about this.ย ย
Rewind, induce amnesia
Deny the truth, that's easier
In all fairness, she couldnโ€™t be a lesbian then. It would destroy her. She didnโ€™t deny it. She just made an executive decision to be a lesbian later. Maybe, she didnโ€™t let herself be a lesbian till a lot later than fifteen-year-old Lena intended. Maybe, she did actually. Andrea. That definitely passed the point of close friends after Italy.
You're just confused, believe her
She said Lena was drunk and disorientated, actually.ย
When she says there's nothing there
It's never worth it
When you're little miss perfect
It wasnโ€™t worth it.
Kara stopped singing and she looked like she was about to start the next one. Lena needed to know more.ย
โ€œDarling?โ€ she called out quietly, knowing how much her girlfriend hates loud noise.ย
โ€œYes,โ€ Kara spun around with a huge smile.ย
โ€œWhatโ€™s that song you just sang called?โ€ she asked as she stopped chopping the carrots.ย
โ€œLittle Miss Perfect,โ€ Kara shrugged, โ€œWhy?โ€.ย
โ€œNo reason,โ€ Lena smiled, she was failing at this be casual thing.ย
โ€œAre you okay?โ€ Kara asked suspiciously.ย
โ€œCompletely fine,โ€ Lena shrugged as she started chopping the carrots again. She paused for a second, โ€œHow do you feel about me telling Lillian that weโ€™re dating?โ€. Kara almost fell out of her chair.ย
โ€œWhat?โ€ she asked.ย
โ€œWell, apparently on this Earth sheโ€™s not in prison yet and I want to tell her weโ€™re dating,โ€.ย
โ€œSheโ€™s working with Lex,โ€ Kara laughed.ย
โ€œIt may induce a heart attack,โ€ Lena shrugged.ย
โ€œOkay,โ€ Kara laughed, โ€œWhatever you want,โ€.ย
โ€œOkay,โ€ Lena breathed and an idea popped into her head. โ€œWhat if when you save me from the liar in the grand master plan you still hate, you kiss me. I think that may be more effective in inducing the heart attack,โ€.ย
โ€œThat plan isnโ€™t going ahead!โ€ Kara argued, almost offended by Lenaโ€™s suggestion it was. Lena gave her the look of disbelief, one raised eyebrow and her head turned slightly to the side.ย
โ€œI was going to kiss you anyway,โ€ Kara mumbled and Lena found herself bursting out in laughter.ย
โ€œI would have been mad if you didnโ€™t,โ€ she smiled, โ€œYou would have had to make it up to me with even more kisses,โ€.ย
There was a gust of wind and Kara was behind her, โ€œHow many?โ€ was whispered into her ear and Lena dropped the knife she was holding as Karaโ€™s arm wrapped around her waist and a kiss was placed just under her ear.ย
โ€œIโ€™d have to see,โ€ Lena shrugged and Kara spun her around so she faced her girlfriend.ย
โ€œTell me when I achieve enough kisses,โ€ Kara smiled, lifting Lena onto the counter.ย
โ€œIโ€™m not mad at you,โ€ Lena whispered against her lips.
Kara pouted and pulled away with a grumpy look, โ€œLet me kiss you,โ€ she complained.ย
โ€œIf I really have to,โ€ Lena teased with a huge smile, wrapping her legs around Karaโ€™s waist to pull her closer and meeting her lips in a kiss.ย

Doesn't P's behavior remind you Lee Pace, Richard Armitage, Edgar Ramirez and co? They're all extremely 'private' when it goes about their relationship status. But if some of them are really private by their nature and hide under their shelf, P is very open about everything but his love life. If he does the same about his fam/friends/background it wasn't suspicious. But this exclusive privatness of his does look strange.
No. Maybe Lee Pace. But Lee has said he's queer/bi from my understanding.
Richard Armitage actively bearded. Again Pedro has not bearded, if he was truly trying to cover up his sexuality he would get a beard. Plenty of actresses would sign up to do a pap walk with him. Every single time he seen out with a woman they clearly labeled as a friend. They aren't described as a partner (with the exception of Lena).
Edgar Ramirez I believe has denied being gay. I can't find the exact quote, but I think he said something like he was flattered so many people believed his acting. Again that's something Pedro has never done. When he was portraying Oberyn he went on and on about how similar he was to Oberyn an openly bisexual character. He also said Oberyn's orgy heaven was his own version of heaven.
Lee Pace might be the closest, Lee Pace was sort of closeted and came out in a weird fashion. A reporter asked him about a lgbt character he was portraying, Lee said something like only lgbt people should play lgbt characters, and that more or less outted him. I think though Lee wanted to be openly out for a while, he had dated Armitage for a while and probably got fed up with his closeted stances. I don't know much about Lee but it seems like he's someone who is more glass closeted than anything else.
I think Pedro is protective of his private life and even with his family, it seems he's protective of them. He only allows people to see what he chooses you to see. He just never seems to have been in the closest to me or hiding his sexuality.

I'm not exactly a new kpop fan (2008, 360pwol), but I'm new to broader Korean music and I'm considering branching out into 70s/80s/90s/early 00s Korean artists that aren't idols/are precursors to today's idols. Do you have any recommendations ranging from individual songs to artists?
My taste in music fluctuates more than my hormones, so I'll do my best to describe what I'm attracted to musically.
Men: higher-pitched vocals
Women: lower-pitched vocals
What I seek out most: emphasis on melody, the entire 80s & 90s aesthetic from sound to style, power ballads as opposed to soft ballads, accompaniment instrumentation (rock, big band, etc.), instrumentals, and experimental key & time signature changes.
I sincerely apologise if this is a tall order ajdjjfhf you don't have to answer if it is, I'm just in a music-seeking mood and unsure where to start with Korean music specifically. And many thanks, as well.
omg this is so broad but so specific. hm. iโ€™ll just list a bunch of people iโ€™ve listened to and put asterisks next to the ones that match most of your specifications.
first off this is my older korean music playlist:
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2ZBq70xdqix0lOqvAkjnhT?si=2WFCqMXaQVqJqyCSSJmhog
ballad singers:
kim bumsoo*, kcm*, lee seunggi, yoo jaeha, shin haechul, kim gunmo*, yim jaebum, lee moonsae, cho yongpil
lena park, sohyang, insooni, yoon mirae*, lee sunhee, lee sora*, shim soobong*, sungwoojungha, lee jungmi*
rock bands:
boohwal, panic/lee juck, sanullim, sinawe, witches, crying nut, the geeks, jaurim, busker busker, toy, yb
precursors to todayโ€™s idols:
uhm jung hwa*, lee jung hyun,ย baby vox, finkl, ses, early brown eyed girls, sg wannabe, cool, solid, roora, dj doc, turbo, seo taiji and the boys, hot, god, koyote, shinhwa, nami, sobangcha
i recommend looking at the 3 most famous songs for each of these acts iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll find some artists you like! most of them i havenโ€™t listened to deeply i just know a few songs so if youโ€™re interested in some artists and want song recs send me another ask!ย also i didnโ€™t include any trot because i donโ€™t listen to a lot but itโ€™s a huge part of korean music so if you want some trot recommendations lmk!ย

Haven't done this in a while but I had the time so why not?
1.- Pizza Girl by Kyoung Jean Frazier
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
I really did like it, reminded me a lot of "Convinience store woman". Like clearly our protagonist needed thrapy ASAP to help her deal with her dad's death, her pregnancy, her attraction to women and hell just for existing as an Asian woman in the USA, but I liked how messy and obsesive she was and how the author allowed her to be fucked up and take bad decisions, I love to see female characters simply exist, it's also a pretty short read so I definitely recommend it.
2.-The Authentics by Abdi Nazemian
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
Darรญa is a persian teen who is really involved in her cultural background and feels that the most important thing one can be is authentic, so that's the name she and her friends take for their clique. But everything comes crashing down on her when she discovers she is adopted, and soon follows an identity crisis. I loved it so much, it felt pretty realistic, like Darรญa could be self absorbed and unlikeable at times, but who wasn't as a teen? And we get such beautiful heartwarming moments between Darรญa and her family and friends. Totally recommend it.
3.- The Mall by Megan McCafferty
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
Cassie has her life completely mapped out but nothing goes quite as planned, first she gets mononucleosis and after she gets better gets dumped and fired almost simultaneously. Determined not to let it get the best of her, Cassie gets a brand new job, reconnects with an old friend and even finds a hidden treasure. This one is so much fun, all the 90s references and the growth Cassie goes through is amazing, honeslty i would love to see this as a Netflix movie.
4.- Luster by Raven Leilani
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
This book was hard, Edie is a very raw character, at first she seems flippant even when describing disturbing facts about her past or details about her relationship with a much older man she seems to be talking about something that happened to someone else all this to cope dealing with her solitude, her trauma, her self hate. And gosh it was so intresting to see her interact with Rebecca and Akila, especially Akila as Edie finds kinship in this young girl not only cuz they are both black but because they are both lost and afraid.
5.- Lakewood by Megan Giddings
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
Lena decides to participate on a financially compensated medical experiment so her mom can get proper medical care and to lessen their debts after her Grandmother's death.
So I had many mixed feelings about this, on one hand I liked that we are adressing how sistematical racism has permited experiments on black people with no consequences at all and how it has been happening for decades, but there were certain parts of the book that I couldn't enjoy as much because they were very trippy like I get we are on Lena's mind as things are becoming muddled up because of the medications and all those mind games and the words they have her memorize and repeat but all of it took me a bit away from the story. Still I do recommend it just be aware there is quite a bit of body horror in this so if you are sqeamish better skip it.
6.-The Voting Booth - Brandy Colbert
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
Marva and Duke meet on election day as she helps him find the precint he is registered on.
This is very enjoyable, the story is very straightforward, and it insists on our right and responsability to vote even if we feel our vote alone can't possibly change all the injustice we see in the world. And also the romance was cute and developed slowly as Marva and Duke are just knowing each other. Really cute and quick read.
7.- Such a fun age - Kiley Reid
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
Emira works as a babysitter for the Chamberleins' . She loves her little charge Briar, although she feels preassured to seek a 'real job' by her friends and by her own economic troubles. Emira soon finds herself in the middle of a tug of war between her boss Alix who tries to befriend her, and Kelley the guy she is dating.
So much drama. This is a great example of what performative activism looks like, first Alix is completely nuts, from her obsession to be seen as this wonderful understanding girl boss activist and the down right creepy sense of entitlement to Emira's friendship and intimacy. Like it doesn't surprise me she chose to victimize herself instead of recognizing it had all been a misunderstanding. And even then she still wants to seem atractive to the man she feels victimized by. Girl no.
Kelley is the ultimate fake woke ally. Dude Robbie was wrong period, he had no business inviting people over to someone else's house no matter the color of his skin. You don't get to talk over Emira on matters of what a person of color should do or feel on certain situations. That said it was so funny when he and Alix called each other out for their fetishization of people of color and yet none of them actually gave a damn about what Emira thought/felt/percieved. They just wanted her stamp of approval so they could pat themselves in the back for being such good allies.
8.- The Life and (Medieval) times of Kit Sweetly by Jamie Pacton
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
Kit is working as a serving wench at the Castle, medieval themed restaurant run by her uncle, though she really wants to be a Knight, not only cuz the better pay would help around the house but because she really admires Joan of Arc, problem is the Castle management doesn't allow for anyone who is not a cis male to be a knight. Kit is set on changing that.
Ok so I feel a bit lukewarm toward this. Kit in my opinion doesn't get much growth, it seems she just can do whatever and her friends have to be ok w it, her romance w her friend feels pulled out of nowhere like Jett at one point tells her he is not intrested in dating her and then he is ???, those GoT references killed me, I get it I watched the show and sometimes even enjoyed it but it's not representative of anything medieval and Kit was always talking about how much she liked the actual history of the medieval times so...
Also as much as this book was about feminism and how we should fight for equal job oportunities, it feels as though Kit only cared about medieval woman who fought physically and not on the badass medieval woman, like idk it feels as a rejection of tradicional feminity like even the girl playing the Princess is a jerk. But I did like some parts, like her decision to confront her asshole dad to help her mom and the girls training together.
10.-The Monsters of music by Rebecca F. Kenney
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
This is a gender-swaped modern retelling of the Phantom of the Opera.
It was creative to make Mel, our Phantom, a true magical creature, and the singing contest was also cool. Like don't get me wrong I did have fun reading this but it also felt pretty unpolished like most characters were teens on the contest and that kinda made me roll my eyes a bit, like unless it's the Voice Kids age ranges are quite ample on this kind of shows, also kinda clumsy the addition of the magical elements with the modern setting, Kiyo didn't make much of an impression with me even when Christine is my fave on the original book. Still if you are a Phan like me you might wanna check this one out.
11.- Anna K by Jenny Lee
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
This is a modern americanized ya retelling of Anna Karenina.
Not gonna lie this made me cry so much at the end. I really liked Anna and Vronski together so much, and I don't like the love at first sight trope, but here it felt so inevitable. Anna was so self contained until she met him and could truly explore being herself and they really loved each other so much. Also I liked the treatment of the side characters Kimmie and Dustin were well developed and I really enjoyed this one can't wait to get to the second book.
12.- Wonderland by Zoje Stage
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
It was ok, but I was actually a bit disappointed cuz I had such high expectations for it. Like for about half the book I was really into the atmospheric vibe the book pulls you into, but as we get the reveal it started to go down hill for me, and the ending left me feeling meh. But maybe it was just not my cup of tea.
13.-Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
This book is so well crafted!!! I love how it goes back and forth between past and present , first it feels as if history is repeating itself, then as both narratives unfold we start to question and discovering things and the twist at the end was chillin and masterful, I truly and wholeheartedly recommend it.
14.- The Girl with the louding voice by Abi Darรฉ
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
Adunni, a teenage girl, flees from her husband to work as a maid in Lagos, though everything she has ever wanted is to study.
This broke my heart, as it reflects how people coming from rural backgrounds get taken advantage of in the City, like similar things happen here in Mexico, but also it made me glad to see Adunni fight and keep her spirit so no one could ever silence her.
15.- The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson
๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
Immanuel does her very best to fit in Bethel, follow the scriptures and the Prophets words, but nothing seems to be enough to erase her mother's sin especially when the Darkwood seems to pull her in. As a plague starts to ravage Bethel, Immanuel has to face her past to save her people.
So frickin' good !!!! This story is great, mainly about the explotation of woman and young girls by people in power (in this case a church), the atmosphere is always tense, Ezra and Immanuel 's relationship is very well developed and one can really see how loyal they are to each other. A great option for horror fans.
