There was so much that could have been going on between these two! I was talking to @nakamurastorrington about this on twt the other day.

Like, Annabeth's fatal flaw is hubris and Ethan's mother is the physical embodiment of the punishment for hubris, they are diametrically opposed! They have their shared history at camp but very different experiences with the system where Annabeth was pretty much immediately claimed and became the head councillor of her own cabin from a very young age, establishing her as a respected veteran at camp. Meanwhile, Ethan was shoved into a corner of someone else's cabin because he wasn't worth his own cabin, and so he just faded into the background. Also, Their relationship with Luke! They both had Luke as a big brother figure. Annabeth saw him as genuine family and Ethan would have looked up to him as his brother while in the Hermes cabin. Then Luke left and Annabeth still held out hope for him and refused to believe he'd ever truly passed the point of no return even while everyone constantly told her she was wrong, and Ethan, despite spending a year working for Kronos and seeing the worst of the results of Luke's actions, still believed he was in there fighting Kronos. Not to mention, THEIR MOTHERS??!?!!?!

There could have been such interesting conflict between them! Annabeth should have gotten to talk to Ethan during the parley. If anyone should have gotten to snap at Ethan about his mother, it should have been her because he would have snapped back so hard!

I need to point something out about the Krew’s conversation with Torbek in episode 19.

Kremy—a man who likes to keep up appearances and appear larger than life, who relies on his silver tongue to spin his words into lies and half-truths—let himself appear as vulnerable to Torbek as Torbek was after the fight.

Because Kremy took off his coat and his tie (Richie made a point to both say that and make the motions as he was describing what Kremy was doing), before getting on Torbek’s level and seeing if there was anything on Torbek’s person that could explain what just happened, before noticing everything else that was off.

Kremy taking off his coat and tie is actually kinda significant, considering that shortly after, he (eventually) agrees to tell Torbek the truth about what happened, and even willingly spoke up to fill in what Gricko was missing in his explanation. Kremy was, metaphorically, letting his walls down and letting Torbek see him in a way that I imagine even Frost and Gricko rarely see (maybe outside of sleeping or bathing).

I mean, of course, Kremy immediately puts his walls back up the following day, and then acts like he is somehow above Torbek for the remainder of the season (which I hope he cuts it out early S2), but…it’s a step. It’s a step in the right direction for Kremy’s arc, and I can’t believe I didn’t even take too much of a notice in this—or anything the gator did—until I started rewatching the series and genuinely started looking into Kremy’s character more.

And of course Kremy’s whole interaction with Torbek this episode isn’t the only significant one, and i promise I’m not ignoring the others (in fact, I’m actually quite interested in the way Frost handled the combat, as well as the way he separated himself from Torbek afterwards, and it will be making me pay extra close attention to Frost for the next few episodes), I just…don’t hear a lot about Kremy in particular this episode.

that one concept about soulmates being reincarnated (tho i personally see jecki and yord as platonic soulmates), where sometimes their lives are inextricably bound together from start to end, but sometimes they only ever meet once to simply lend a helping hand, to save a life, to be a comfort in a time of need. and the fact that [spoiler] through his death, orin (and his saber) saved enya's life is like a fulfillment of that interview where charlie said to dafne "i'm really sad that i didn't get to at least try to save you"

anyhow. it is pretty inconsiderate but it's also not like. the height of psychological warfare, is it. just someone used to being the centre of attention surrounded by people who are used to him being the centre of attention - reflected in the eagerness of factory ducati to welcome him. one who doesn't give a shit about most people, including bastianini. barely even counts as crushing your rival because bastianini is basically competitively irrelevant from now on, like the question of whether this would bother that guy probably doesn't even register. you could say it's aimed at pecco, but that bloke's had two weeks to make his peace with losing the title and probably welcomes the chance to focus on what comes next

obviously the act of inserting yourself into this new team and this aggressive borderline performative cheerfulness marc's been shooting for this year does have an ulterior motive. and yeah, marc does play with that! he's gotten very boisterous, very much about asserting himself, emphasising again and again and again how much fun he's having. inevitably draws the attention to himself. it's a kind of weaponised joy, one without compromise or care for those left in the shadows. you perform your way to winning, right. and, well, I suppose he learnt that from the best. a bit cruel and a bit careless is a decent enough characterisation... this idea that marc keeps his fights on-track is silly but would also make him more boring than he is if it were true. he's there to win, and sometimes you're going to be a bit tacky and a bit crass along the way. the joys of competition
