specific alabaster headcanon i have: hes very good at doing things that like. require tensing practically every muscle in your hands. carving, sculpting, pottery, sewing/embroidering, etc. basically he’s very crafty, and it’s very useful when it comes to enchanting stuff. but for someone who uses his hands a lot, his penmanship is absolute dogshit chicken scratch, nevermind that his paranoid ass writes in ciphers and pictures and hodgepodge mixed languages. he touches a pencil to paper and his lines come out like he’s the personification of a seismograph located in the pacific ring of fire

ethan: i’ve been toying with the idea of him being near a coastal/fishing area. lower-middle class, communities of people who work with their hands, everyone knows everyone, immigrant melting pot, a significant chunk of them japanese-american. hawai’i and its adjacent areas are what i’ve been looking at

al: rich. R I C H. he grew up in one of those darkwood gothic revival-esque manors (the best peg i can think of is the thrombey mansion from knives out). cold climates, clean and crisp air, surrounded by thickets of trees and not much neighbors. massachussetts would be an easy pick but also i think there are already too many pjo characters from the east coast LMAO so pacific northwest it is

chris: i think of chris as someone who sees a lot of sun and like. wilderness. i’ve cornplated that one line from som to mean that chris is a big animal nerd, which translates into also being a big monster nerd. RANCHER CHRIS⁉️⁉️⁉️ i also think it’s very fun if chris and clarisse kind of bond over being from the area. maybe arizona or colorado?

silena: new jersey. i dont even have to think about it. it’s the cryptid of the american states. yes its metropolitan yes its also stereotyped as the most bumfuck where-are-we area. i think. silena wants to live big but also shes a little withdrawn so i think it’s fitting. we do know mr. beauregard’s chocolate shop is in new york (?) so… feasible!

hc that Al (when he's not an exile running for his life and unable to sleep) really puts effort into his appearance. His hair is freshly washed, blow dried, combed and styled every day, he picks out all his outfits in advance based on how flattering they are and he's got a fifteen step skincare routine. The only thing he's lacking is that his eyelashes are pretty short, straight and almost invisible but he hates how over-the-top and inconvenient a lot of fake lashes are so he has to just suck it up. On the other hand, Ethan couldn't give less of a shit and showers with 3-in-1s but he for some reason has the most effortlessly beautiful lashes in the world and Al is sooo fucking jealous you have no idea.

i know people who have a lot of ocs but don't know where to start talking about them so i'mma try to solve that with a silly little ask game:

(this is gonna be mostly about ethabeth because I think they're the ones that warrant the most explaining)

yeah tbh I do see where you're coming from with the needing external circumstances to get them over the initial bump in the road of the whole hubris vs nemesis thing.

I do think they’d be very fun if they’re able to get over their animosity and they’re very fun to think about in part because of how their flaws contrast each other and how they can potentially help with the other’s flaws. The thing with Annabeth is that yes, her fatal flaw is hubris, but she’s very aware of it and it’s not something she particularly likes about herself. We know it’s her fatal flaw because she tells us, and she calls it her fatal flaw. She just can’t help it. Additionally, I love aus where Ethan lives and has a bit of an identity crisis post-war because he feels that he no longer has a purpose in life and a reason to still be alive so his self-esteem hits rock bottom and he’s desperate to have Something to do. It would be fun if they could balance each other out by Annabeth helping him find a purpose and helping him see his own worth, while he could help her keep her ego in check and learn to recognise when things aren’t a personal issue with her and she needs to take a step back. (also with their mothers they’re very recognition of the self through the other (derogatory) in that they’d probably get a clearer idea of how bad their mothers are by complaining about the other’s mother)

I think they work best in scenarios where they’re forced to set aside their disagreements and work together (probably so they don’t die) which allows them to develop a begrudging respect for one another that can turn into something else later on. The above balancing would not work out if they still disliked each other, their attempts to help would amount to banging their heads against a brick wall. One of my fav aus involves Ethan staying at CHB post-war and working with Annabeth to design the new cabins, and at that time everyone’s very tentative with each other and a bit awkward so they’re not as confrontational. Then, as the project continues and they see each other as coworkers first and foremost, they get a bit sharp with each other and can have a chill workplace rivalry.

Another au I love and one that’s a bit more perilous involves Ethan being in Tartarus because Kronos mad when Percabeth get there in House of Hades and he acts as their guide. He doesn’t especially like them but he respects Percy and he doesn’t want either of them to die so he hangs around. Also he and Annabeth get to talk about shit like Luke because Ethan has a better understanding of him and everything that happened with him than Percy. Ethan would also look at Annabeth getting a little scared by Percy and recognising that other time a guy she loved and trusted slowly became more fuelled by anger and more dangerous until he started hurting her as well as the people he was angry at (cue Ethan pulling Percy aside like “bro, you are scaring the hoes”).

Al works very well thrown into the mix because he works well individually with Ethan and Annabeth. Depending on the moods they’re in, he can get up to some mad science bullshit with Annabeth and get both of them picked up by the scruff by Ethan, and he can be Ethan and Annabeth’s mutual weird freak pet boyfriend that they share exasperated looks about and need to wrangle. I also greatly like the idea of Al being like a mutual bf and they’re both very mildly jealous of the fact that he has another partner in a very insecure “ugh, what does he even see in that loser?” way, but then they get curious and it quickly devolves into “oh no, I see why he likes them.” Except Ethan’s reaction to developing feelings for his bf’s gf is to avoid her and pretend like they don’t exist, while Annabeth’s reaction to developing feelings for her bf’s bf is to claim him for herself too. Then Annabeth and Al get to combine their Tsundere powers and gang up on Ethan and make him age about ten years in the span of a week.

(also I've had an au where annabaster are Lord and Lady Bertilak and Ethan is sir Gawain on the mind which has been very good for selling me on this ship. Ethan is just trying to do his job and go through the five stages of grief in peace and this weirdass magic couple incessantly flirting with him is not helping)

hmmm tbh my gut reaction is that. ethan would kinda be steamrolled over by annabeth and al’s personalities combined BAHAHAHAHAH for me the reason why ethabaster works is because they share some common ground with the titan army, and ethan can deal with one (1) alabaster; with percethalabeth, percy’s also a big moderating/balancing factor particularly in being able to keep al in check as well as having some form of camaraderie w ethan. ethannabaster could very easily devolve into “ethan vs the hubris homies” LMAO

i think it might depend on how you characterize annabeth, al, and their relationship: if you go with the chb besties annabaster backstory, it might be hard for ethan to be somewhere in there because the way i imagine ethan and annabeth in my head, it’s quite difficult to bridge the differences in their personalities and outlooks. you could make it a v-hinge thing with al in the middle but also if ethan and annabeth dont like each other, with annabeth’s issues and ethan’s uhhh ego death, i feel like that arrangement will go up in flames… if you dont go with annabeth chb babies on the other hand, i admittedlt also dont. also have any ideas on how to make annabeth and al connect BAHAHAHAHAH

tldr i feel like this is a ship where you cant just put them together and they’ll naturally bond, you have to really bludgeon them with External Circumstances and Factors because their combination of egos (or lack thereof) is very. idk how to describe it BAHAHAHAHAH disastrous??? not even in the “love to hate you” way, i mean as in the “i cant stand this bitch” way. id love to hear your ideas though, if uve been rotating them in ur head you must have some pretty interesting thoughts going on

jason/ethan would be a rarepair, not a crackship! crackship is something thats impropable and/or a joke, often involving inanimate objects like the infamous jason/brick. rarepairs are just very obscure ships that may or may not be feasible in the realm of canon.

admittedly, im not the best jason thinker to really have any input on this, i very rarely dip my toes in hoo waters LMAO. but ik some mutuals of mine would have ideas for this; a handful of them also like jason/alabaster (torringrace), so it’s like a few steps away from there BAHAHAHAHAH

right off the bat though, i think they’d have at least a very good camaraderie. they’re both principled self-effacing soldier types so i can see them having very deep respect for each other just based on that alone. pepper in some “my mom/mother figure trained and wielded me as a weapon and nothing more” issues… lotsa potential there for a friendship and maybe something more.
