Mock Book Cover 1: 'Daughter of the Forest' by Juliet Marillier

As a fun and very different kind of challenge to myself I decided to try my hand at creating some book covers!! The books I made coves for are all over the place... some of them I haven't even read. I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me start from the beginning.

The Challenge: Create a book cover in as little time as possible (don't look at me like that I have work and, shockingly, a full roster of commissions. Name of the game is fast or not at all). I am not allowed to make new art or illustrations for the covers, it must all be either old art I've made repurposed, or stock images. I have to make them on Photoshop, using only my trackpad (because I don't want to dig up my mouse from wherever it's hiding). And yes, the weird digital layer is on purpose in hopes of dissuading scrapping. Part 2 is to try to actually edit them into videos for TikTok, wish me luck!

I started with 'The Sevenwaters Trilogy' by Juliet Marillier. Mostly because ages and ages ago in university we were tasked with creating a trilogy of book covers and a box for the set. So when I was combing through things I'd saved to my computer for images to use for book covers... I thought I'd brush the dust off of these bad boys and give them new life. The first time I did hand lettering, and this time I used a font. If you've read the series, the imagery is on theme!!

Ralph and Julie are alive? Ralph and Julie are alive. Do you ever think about that??? Think about how Ralph Montgomery and Julie Capsom are alive???? How Arden took one of the most well know tragedies, possibly in the world, and changed the ending so they LIVE??!???!?? In the “they’re going to die” play???????? In the “hi the story hasn’t started yet but just a heads up they will die— we know this is based on an older story, but just in case you didn’t know, they are going to die at the end” play????? And they LIVE??????????????

It’s been four and a half years since I listened and I haven’t stopped thinking about how Ralph and Julie are alive. They made it out. Just this once. Just this once, they made it out alive.

i might be biased because i just wrote a fic about them and i already think everything about juliet is underrated, especially her relationships with the other women on the show but like. juliet and sun?? juliet and sun!!

juliet, who was brought to the island specifically to save pregnant women. juliet, who was told she couldn't leave because the women of the island still needed her. juliet, who was the other woman and sun, who cheated on her husband. juliet, who got her ex-husband killed and sun, who almost ran away from her husband. sun shoots a woman and she dies in juliet's hands

juliet, who watched 9 of her patients die in 3 years so she just desperately wanted to give good news again, and sun, who smiled and thanked her for the good news even if she died. juliet, who smiled and cried with her. juliet, who got sent to the camp to find more pregnant women and when she did, she decided to betray ben instead. sun being the reason juliet broke free from ben after three years on the island

juliet, who worked so hard to earn the survivors' trust, revealing sun's secrets just to try to save her. juliet making sure that sun was the first to get on the raft that took her to the boat/helicopter that took her off the island, and not getting a spot for herself

juliet and sun, who never saw each other again, who died on that damn island... but after making sure sun's baby lived

(plus juliet being there when sun got her memories of the island back during the flash-sideways!)
