obviously, i love when tv shows resort to adapting defamatory rumors about the borgias, in fact it makes stuff spicier for good television! but i have that pet peeve and it is the false narrative with zero factual basis that i keep encountering while reading biographies about the house of borgia that the scholars really need to fuck off with them, and it's the whole irritating narrative that juan is the pope's favorite son, and cesare is consumed by jealousy towards him. which is total bullshit when cesare in fact received so much affection and appreciation from the pope as much as juan received (if not more than juan) cesare was the one who has always been consistently by their father's side and enjoyed immense popularity in rome, even among the artists who hailed him as the most handsome man in italy, and machiavelli was all over him. basically cesare was the renaissance's main prince. so there's nothing that indicates that cesare is jealous of juan over literally anything, and it's just the biographers being overly dramatic about him by giving him the "from zero to hero" trope (read maria bellonci's 'the life and times of lucrezia borgia' because she dives deep into this topic)
and no, cesare didn't hate juan. it's quite the opposite! his letters to his younger brother are full of tenderness, guidance, and fraternal love. it's another borgia famous rumor that needs to die down in biographies.
let's take sarah bradford (the author of 'lucrezia borgia: life, love, and death in renaissance Italy' and cesare borgia: his life and times) for example, and how she deliberately cut the part where cesare signs his letter to juan with "dal vostro fratello che vi ama com se stesso." translated as "from your brother who loves you as himself" because of her unnecessary haterism towards juan since she likes hyping cesare at his expense.
she also manipulated a document about the ambassador who visited cesare. here's a snippet from her book:
the actual translation from the document (praising both brothers) :
at this point, i'm convinced that if sarah bradford (and authors like her) didn't burst blood vessels for one minute by projecting her one-sided beef towards juan onto cesare with her unfair, incorrect statements of him she might start getting chills and have a stroke
that's it for now! i'm planning to make a masterpost about stuff like that because there are a lot of infamous rumors that some biographers tend to resort to, which is truly exhausting lol
#like i get it if it was historical fiction but when authors include false narratives in biographies with zero factual basis then yikes#anyway read emma lucas's “lucrezia borgia” for a goodass biography about the borgias#make sure you check gustavo sacerdote's “cesare borgia” as well !!#me being offended on cesare's behalf bc he's always paintef as a loser???#and juan is always getting clocked for nothing i gotta stand beside him sometimes#house of borgia#the borgias#biography#biografia#borgia#cessre borgia#juan borgia#the borgia family#books#reading#historical drama#historical fiction#historical figures#history#historical

Random thought bc i havent posted in a while but a while ago i found a song i really liked and i watched the music video but it made NO SENSE. so i looked into it and found an article about it which had quotes from an interview abour the song and the only thing i got out of it was a snippit of the author saying "there was so much discourse online... I was so upset... So i channeled that anger of the internet in this song..." btw this song is like orchestral slow and calm and i was just thinking. Ichiro would totally do that. He would totally see online discourse and get so upset he would release a song about it.
#God hes such a loser#Ichiro is kind of funny to me i love him#But i can see him doing silly ass shit#hypmic#hypnosis mic#hypnosis microphone#ichiro yamada#Song was from juanes btw you get a kiss if you guess the song#Luca talks#Noctifan

Letters From Watson Liveblog - June 2
Wisteria Lodge, Part 4 of 4
Holmes is either paying him a lot of money, or Warner here just really hates his old boss. Either way, he's a real hero for jumping in and saving Miss Burnet, especially since he knows how violent Mr. Henderson can be.
The image of Baynes and Holmes hiding in different forms of foliage at the same time is very funny to imagine. Holmes has really found someone as dedicated as he is to solving a mystery.
A vague Central American dictator! That's certainly an interesting reveal, and it is in line with Doyle's tendency to include what I presume to be international hot topics in his stories.
It also means I was right the first time about this whole case being connected to politics! From Central America of course and not Spain, so I was wrong there, but still.
I'm surprised a dictator cared enough about his children to hire a governess for them. And now those poor kids are probably going to have a terrible life for the foreseeable future, or at least as worse as their life has been so far.
And that explains what happened to Garcia. A terrible, gruesome death at the hands of a terrible, gruesome man.
As a side note, I do wonder what Scott-Eccles thinks of all this, cause there's a lot going on here involving dictators, revolutionaries, subterfuge, etc. that he was dragged into one night.
Also kudos to Miss Durando for fighting back, while drugged, against her captors. This story is full of great people, that I feel like Holmes and Watson were almost inconsequential to the whole thing. Even Warners, whom Holmes asked for help, could easily have been hired by Baynes instead.
Well, it may have taken six months but at least they finally got their comeuppance. No mention of the kids though, which is worrying. A somewhat satisfying conclusion then.
The story did not need this. It could have happily ended with the murder of a dictator and without this extra display of racism at the end. This story has pretty consistently painted people from Central America with such discriminatory descriptions, and it's just awful to see.
This sounds familiar but I forget what it's referring to. Hopefully it's not as racist as Wisteria Lodge was.

Hello there!
I've been wanting to read books on the Borgia family for a while, and I feel like you're the correct person to ask about this. Do you have any recommendations?
hiii! thank you for your question :) i often talk about sarah dunant as the best historical fiction writer about the borgia family because of how impressively she depicted their characters and gave them nuance and justice without hyping anyone at the expense of others (fascinating character intros, less yassificated portrayal of cesare borgia, and without the extremely unfair resorting to simplifying and taking personal jabs at juan borgia just for the sake of it) in her novel 'blood and beauty'. it also includes groundbreaking twists. now, i want to talk about emma lucas as the best biographer of the borgias. her work is a solid read, very unbiased without any manipulation of the letters about/between the siblings to push certain narratives (hello sarah bradford!!), well-researched, sheds light on the family's complex relationships and their rise to power, and is highly sympathetic to all of them. you won't be disappointed!!
#maria bellonci's bio about the borgias also slaps as well (shares the same name as emma lucas's bio “lucrezia borgia”)#i also recommend it as one of the finest bios about the borgias#and for historical fiction...mario puzo's “the family” slaps as well and definitely not surprised bc dude wrote the godfather so...#thanks for your question <3#the borgias#history#literature#sarah dunant#the borgia family#borgia#emma lucas#book recommendations#books#book#historical#historical fiction#historical figures#juan borgia#messages
