Skrillex - Quest For Fire Review

Skrillex’s long-awaited second album “Quest for Fire” released in February 2023, only a week after Rebecca Black’s debut. I’ve been listening to Skrillex since his rise to fame in 2010, though I hadn’t paid as much attention to his work going into the mid-to-late 2010s as large releases became infrequent. “Quest for Fire” was a much-appreciated release, dropping me head-first back into the gritty, in-your-face sound of Skrillex’s music while breaking enough new ground to still feel fresh in the 2020s.

Tracks like “RATATA” are suitably catchy, while tracks like “Tears”, “Rumble”, and collaboration with Noisia, Josh Pan & Dylan Brady “Supersonic (my existence)” take the listener through bass-heavy soundscapes with Skrillex’s signature incredible sound design.

“XENA”, a collaboration with up-and-coming Palestinian jazz artist Nai Barghouti ناي البرغوثي, was a welcome surprise. “XENA” is an adaptation of the Palestinian folk song “Ghandara” “غندرة” which takes Barghouti’s vocals and arranges them with deep synth basslines and Arab-style drums, creating an utterly unique track which blends this traditional Palestinian piece with contemporary American EDM.

Barghouti previously released her arrangement of the song on her album “Nai 1”, which is worth listening to on its own.

The album closes with “Hazel Theme” and “Still Here (with the ones that I came with)”, laid-back tracks, a staple of Skrillex albums and EPs. “Hazel Theme” behaves as an ambient intro to “Still Here”, which features a groovy two-step garage beat, moody sub-bass, and a big soundscape of pads and various samples.

Both tracks prominently feature melodically chopped vocals, an element of his music present since his early works I’m happy to see still present in the current day. The lyric “Still Here with the ones that I came with” acknowledges Skrillex’s peers and mentors, which repeats throughout the song before its eventual finale.

Overall, “Quest for Fire” is exceptionally listenable from start to finish, and has many tracks that I’ve returned to throughout 2023 and 2024 and will likely continue to return to in the future.

Henry was sitting in the back of the pawnshop showing young Cecile his famous storybook that he was always carrying around. The nine year old turned a page, finding some tars on the last page of the book that looked like someone had ripped the last story out. “It’s missing. Where are they?”

“I don’t know. I only ever took the ones out about you and Emma.” He responded by getting up and beginning to look through the cabinets for the missing pages.

Footsteps were heard coming through the curtain revealing Rumplestilskin to the two young children. He eyed the open book and the few opened cabinets. “What are you two looking for?”

“There’s missing pages from my book. I was thinking they had to be somewhere inside your shop. You collect just about everything in the world.” Henry explained to the pawnshop owner.

Rumple clicked his tongue walking across the wooden floor and back out into the main entrance with the pair following him. The dark one swung the painting away from the wall, revealing a safe that he quickly twisted and opened it with ease. “When I woke up from the curse I secretly took your book from August. I wasn’t sure what Regina would do if she found out I was awake and she knew I had a previous weakness before I had my daughter or Belle in my life.” He laid out a couple of pages showing the two standing before him.

“What happened to that woman? Who is she?” Cecile pointed her finger at one of the pictures of a woman gazing out a window with her long blonde hair in a braid, she held onto a very familiar dagger in her hands.

Rumpelstiltskin sighed with the slumping of his shoulders. “That is a rather complicated story, little princess. As always we must start from the beginning, Once Upon A Time there was a kidnapped princess locked in a tower by an evil witch. The princess had managed to get her hands on a very important dagger that led me to come to her services-“

Standing on the ground Rumplestilskin raised his head staring at the tall tower before him. He needed to get his property returned to him. He teleported inside the tower seeing an open room with two doorways upstairs that would lead into small bedrooms. “You might as well show yourself, dearie. I am in no mood for waiting - ugh!” The dark one collapsed unconscious on the floor and woke up shortly after with long blonde hair trapping him in a chair in the center of the room.

“Struggling is pointless for you, intruder.” He blinked his eyes open looking around before finding someone walking towards him wearing a light pink almost purple gown but had no shoes on.

“What - who are you devil women?”

The figure revealed herself more to him coming out of the shadows showing him a beautiful woman with bright green eyes and very bright and long golden hair. “My name is Rapunzel. Now answer my questions. Who are you and how did you find me?” In her hands was a frying pan drawn slightly back in her hands for defense and he saw a dagger hanging from the bell she wore. When she moved just right he could see his name engraved on it, telling him it was the dagger that belonged to him.

“Rumplestilskin. That dagger hanging on your hip belongs to me.” He gestures his head to it, coming back with a snarky remark. “I suggest you return my property that you stole unless you want things to get ugly.”

She blinked at me with a confused expression. “Wait, you don’t want my hair. You don't want to cut it or sell it?”

“Dearie, I am immortal. Therefore I have no reason to want your hair.” He scoffed at the blonde. “I am the Dark One with powerful dark magic. Now I am asking nicely only one more time, give me my dagger back.”

The long haired princess strolled away and climbed up onto a mantle, pulling back the curtain to reveal a painting she had done. “Do you know what these are?” The painting was her sitting on a hill watching bright flowing objects in the night sky.

“The lantern thing they do for the princess that went missing in Corona.” He responded to her waiting for the right moment to use his magic and get the upper hand on her.

Rapunzel set her frying pan down on the ground and tapped her fingers on the handle of the dagger she wore on her hip. “Well tomorrow evening they will light the night sky with these lanterns. You will act as my guide, take me there and return me home safely. Then, and only then will I return your dagger to you. That is my deal.”

“Deals are my thing, princess. Unfortunately you don’t seem to realize I have the upper hand here.” The Dark One glared at the woman before he smashed the chair he was sitting into pieces using his magic.

Rapunzel gasped, yanking her hair away from him ready to fight. “How did you do that?”

“Through magic of course. Now…” Rumplestilskin raised his hand, launching her against the wall behind her. “Give me my dagger if you wish to live!”

The blonde gasped reaching down where he thought he would get it back yet she spoke something else making him drop his hand and step away from her. “You’re not allowed to kill me —- If you do, you'll never get it back.” The dagger being clutched in her hands was more powerful than she understood at this time.

“Urgh! Fine, I'll take you to your lanterns.” He grumbled about not being able to fight the dagger's control.

She raised a brow at the scaley man. “How did you suddenly agree so quickly?”

“That dagger is connected to my magic. If you command me with it I have no choice but to obey its commands.”

Rapunzel lowered her gaze to dagger in her hand. “I’m sorry, I- I’ve never been around another type of magic that isn’t my own.”

“Magic always comes with a price. That is my piece of advice for you to be careful.” The dark one warns the young woman before getting caught off guard when she places the dagger back to her belt. “What are you doing, Rapunzel?”

She softly spoke back to him. “I’m not going to force you to take me to see the lanterns. I’m just hoping you can do the deal without us having to resort to violence. Do you think you can find it in your heart to help me have one unforgettable birthday?”

“A deal is a deal, Rapunzel.” He extended his hand out to her and she clasped her hand in his. “I always honor my agreements. What’s say you?”

“I promise I will honor or deal.” She nodded her head back at him with a serious look on her face. “And when I promise something I never ever break that promise.”

Neither of them knew that their journey would create a very special family for them to love in the future.
