I just played through Slay the Princess for the first time, and… I cannot stop thinking about the Cage.

To be profoundly and finally severed from the illusion of your autonomy. To look on, from a prison of your own making, as your body acts out a legacy of violence against the body of the only other person who can or will come near you. To see their body perform that same violent dance. To be bound to this person, and in your limited state not to understand why. In that moment, as the silhouettes in the shadows act out the story of the princess and the slayer, to share a moment of peace with the one sent to kill you.

Intertwined. Diminished. Reductive, mutually destructive. Trapped in an infinite dance.

Beautiful.

To have been so determined you never had free will, never could have found another way. To realize you may have been wrong. To be trapped in a pattern, but unaware of what that pattern truly is.

Still, for that finite and watchful moment, not to be alone.

I Was a Teenage Exocolonist flew under my radar until a friend recommended it to me, and now I am fully obsessed so here's me passing the recommendation on!

Do you like visual novels? Skill management? Timeloops? Deckbuilding? Gorgeous art? A whole bunch of fantastic queer characters? Staggering numbers of events and endings that respond to a staggering number of choices you make?

Then you should play this game and come scream in my ask box about it! I have said both "uh-oh" and "yesssss" out loud multiple times while watching the consequences of my actions play out. Absolutely delightful. Enjoy a little bit of screenshot propaganda:

Fairy-type trainer extraordinaire, Tsubaki, enters the scene! It didn’t take long to decide on a type for Tsubaki to main tbh (like Hiiragi is dragon, hands down, and Ume grass), and I’m only a little disappointed that Lopunny’s the outlier here, because as much as I love Hatterene and think it suits Tsubaki, it wasn’t going to beat out Lopunny. This bunny is out there kicking the crap out of opponents and Tsubaki couldn’t be prouder.

Slightly adjacent topic, but I use he/him for Tsubaki because those are his canon pronouns that he uses himself. However! Trans!Tsubaki, or any non-cis iteration thereof, is also cool, so I absolutely had to give him the Trans Icon Sylveon. Happily, Hatterene’s color scheme is similar, so they’re both excellent additions to his team. As for Tinkaton… I didn’t know this pokemon existed until I pulled up a list of fairy types and saw it towards the bottom. I fell in love, instantly, and I firmly believe Tsubaki did as well. I love tiny characters with huge-ass hammers/axes/various melee weapons (Kikoru from Kn8 my beloved), my fate was sealed the moment I saw this. Aromatisse goes along with Tsubaki’s love of pretty things, in the form of being a walking perfume dispenser (and an excellent way for Tsubaki to run off assholes without having to lift a finger). In my heart Aromatisse is free of its pokeball most of the time and spends an ungodly amount of hours coming up with new scents for Tsubaki’s approval, good and bad. Tsubaki’s favorite is also coincidentally the one Umemiya liked enough to comment on it, so Aromatisse makes sure to spritz Tsubaki whenever it knows its trainer is going to meet up with Ume.

Applin is, of course, a gift from Umemiya, which he gave to Tsubaki the day he decided to take a break from his champion duties. Tsubaki had the same idea, so they’re matchy-matchy (and in love shhhhhh).

Fun fact! Tsubaki was originally a contest participant and holds three Regional Contest Champion Titles. Someone more fashion-conscious than me can imagine all the glorious costumes he wore on his contest runs. He still keeps an eye on the scene despite not having much time to participate these days and he’s particularly keen on up-and-comer Suo!

After listening to Venom's then song "One Tenth of me" and then looking up his description on the website, Venom is basically Batman now.

So after the events of the last game and people thought he was dead, the "Venom" of the Assassin's guild is dead as Venom is leaving behind that part of his self. In thanks to the shop Robo Ky gave him he starts a bakery and is living a normal life interacting with the citizens and stuff learning what it's like to be a normal person and how they fight for their personal goals in their lives compared to Venom's fighting to take a life that he's done his whole life as an assassin. The Batman part come in as he's a baker by day and "Phantom" his Moniker by night, protectimg the town he lives in. His name is still Venom and stuff but that "Venom" we used to know is dead and the current Venom is living on the rest of his life, just like the theme song is titled, "A Tenth of Myself" as the rest of his previous life was that of an assassin and nothing else. Even though he's basically starting his life anew all that Tenth left over is undoubtedly every part Venom and his full self, just that it's a new beginning for him.

I honestly think this is a really cool story beat to portray and I really resonate with it, especially when I think about my own future and the fact that I'm still very much molded and formed by my childhood and have a lot to grow and figure out for myself. I sometimes wonder if whatever part of me that'll be left after that process, if I'm brave enough to make those changes at all, is truly me. I guess logically of course it's "me" but does that old me hold precedent over who I become? Am I forever tied to the old me and my persona of those times? Will I ever change or will I ever be anything else other than what I've been told that I am? I didn't mean to get all philosophical all of a sudden but I didn't expect the random guilty gear character that probably existed for longer than I was born to suddenly resonate so heavily with me after listening to his theme song and reading his description on the official website lol. I guess I just got lucky in the right one and place. Anyway this rant was brought to you by "1 A.M sleepless shenanigans" and I hope you all too have a great night. vague ES spoilers but there was, in fact, like i suspected, a betrayal happening at some point

and now we're dealing with the aftermath and whether we should trust the person who betrayed us again after we got them back into our group, while people are still a bit fuming about them

and Dahm was asking me my thoughts on this and there were multiple options from being mad to blaming the person and stuff, and also one that i picked that's just "i mean i feel so bad for them, they carried this burden alone without feeling like they could trust us or anyone for that matter, it must have been such a strain on them and i ache to think i couldn't be here for them."

And Dahm. Bless his heart. Looking at my Brynn going "you're very sweet and kind to worry about their feelings first but you do realize you've been deceived right. you do realize you went on and risked your life multiple times, some of which were close call, because you were being deceived right."

and it's only when Dahm said this that it hit me that damn i really jumped on being an apologist for the gang's liar and betrayer because "but they had their reasons guys isn't it so sad they suffered so much they thought they had no choice but to deceive us :(", i'm a parody of myself
