I stumbled across something interesting while doing some research for a new fic. While on the Wizarding World website (formerly Pottermore), I was perusing the page The Sacred Twenty-Eight when I noticed something interesting.

The Zabinis. Where are they?

We know virtually nothing about them canonically, but according to the Blaise Zabini’s Mother page on the Harry Potter fandom Wiki, “It is unknown if Zabini was her maiden name or one of her married names.” However, this page gives us literally nothing else of importance about her besides stating, “It is possible that she killed each of her husbands to gain their inheritance, given the "mysterious" nature of their deaths” which, no shit.

But if we’re under the assumption that wizarding pureblood society is patrilineal in nature, as is shown in both the films and the books, then wouldn’t Zabini be Blaise’s biological father’s last name that he inherited? Unless it belonged to one of his stepfathers, in which case, is Zabini even a wizarding family?

The list of the Sacred Twenty-eight pureblood families doesn’t list Zabini as one of them, but surely Blaise must be a pureblood if Draco’s willing to associate with him, right?

So if we can suspend our disbelief for a moment and make the pretty decent assumption that Ms. Zabini was married to strictly purebloods for all seven marriages, doesn’t that mean that she was probably responsible for the ending of (at least one) pureblood family line(s)? Or at least doing significant damage population-wise to this shrinking gaggle of people?

Which means, at least to my interpretation, that there are three possible options here.

It’s Blaise’s biological father’s last name. Is his bio dad a pureblood or not then?

It’s one of his stepfathers’ last names. Then who is his bio dad? What pureblood families is he related to by blood?

It’s his mother’s maiden name. Still raises the question of what pureblood family his dad was from, and a matrilineal society in the pureblood world seems pretty damn unlikely.

Sybill Trelawney is such an interesting character and I think giving so much of her characteristics to Pandora water them both down. Also the angst is so good? Like come on guys (more on this)

I'm tired of non-asians on twitter trying to tell asians that we shouldn't be offended by the racial stereotype that is Cho Chang. I mean,

Cho and Chang are both last names

One's Korean, the other's Chinese (no I dont remeber which is which)

She got sorted into the Smart House

Her only interactions are following 2 white boys around like a lovesick puppy

Cho Chang sounds suspiciously like "ching chang" a term used to mock asians (This has been used multiple times against my family and other asian friends)

The only person East Asians can identify with, one of the 4 asians in the entire series (Patil twins, Nagini)

All of the Asian characters are only seen in relation to white men.

Honestly, we wouldn't be as mad if there was other East Asians that DIDN'T conform to that stereotype, but Cho is the only one we got. Thanks Joanne.

Also JK Rowling said the Voldemort's snake used to be an asian women named Nagini... who is now in service to him... and is basically his pet...

Rita Skeeter literally described with manly hands, a strong jaw, and other traditionally masculine features... painting her as a trans women, and someone who is a liar, and is hated by everyone... and oh yeah, changes form to spy on kids.

The house elves love to be enslaved

The american wizard society, where she just shits on everything. Implying that the indigenous people had to be colonized so they could be taught "proper magic", mishandling of native cultures, and incorrectly grouping them into one entity

Saying later that Dumbledore was gay, but not putting it in the story, or into Fantastic Beasts 2, where the storyline is LITERALLY about his former lover.

I'm tired of JK Rowling. I'm tired of "it wasn't relevant to Harry's story, so I didnt include it" I'm tired of people outside of these communities telling us that we're overreacting, and that we shouldn't be offended by what we see.

lavender brown; not a book canon poc, but she counts. lavender brown’s casting is something that makes me so angry, and is completely inexcusable. for those who don’t know, lavender brown was casted as a black girl in the first few movies. when she became an important character in hbp, she was recasted to be white. there was no mention of her race in the books. the only reason she was recasted was because she now had a lot of screentime. 

angelina johnson? she literally described her braids as ‘worms coming out of her head’. but technically pansy parkinson said that! yeah, but joanne still wrote it. it doesn’t matter whose perspective it is; she wrote it. 

lee jordan? WE DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HIM BECAUSE HES SUCH A MINOR CHARACTER 

blaise zabini. once again, a minor character (whose mum canonically kills man after man to get money). 

nagini in fantastic beasts and where to find them? OHMYGOD. don’t even get me started on whatever the fuck happened there.

so yeah. the poc representation in harry potter is crap. so i don’t really care if hermione was intended to be black. just let us have this.

// aslk;jga listen, i am in looove with this question. all i ever wanna do is talk about the minor characters (they are also quite literally minorities) whom joanne wrote as throwaway characters but then just... decided to tokenize after people questioned her about diversity in the wizarding world. womp womp.

——— CHO HEADCANONS.

okay so to start, i do headcanon that members of ravenclaw house are generally pretty close with one another and, as a whole, they spend a lot of time together in the common room and have their own house parties for whenever something big happens (holidays, winning a quidditch match, designated mom friend penelope clearwater getting accepted to a fancy summer internship in the states, etc). they also just spend a lot of down time in the common space throughout the week. beyond that, though, i think cho definitely develops a deeper connection with other students of color, or at least has a quicker time doing so, because they’d have similar or shared experiences, being minorities in an overwhelmingly white school. cho becoming friends with these classmates usually just happens naturally. but having experienced a few comments or taunts about her racial background (in class, on the pitch, in passing), she is extra intentional about seeking out the younger students of color in her later years and introducing herself as a friendly face and confidant, in case they ever experience that antagonism and think there’s no one they can talk to about it. she's protective over the younger students in her house, and even more so when they are students of color, but this is something she extends to students in other houses, too!  

( and a brief note on that: hogwarts is definitely not immune to bullying or antagonism revolving around racist stereotypes, and incidents about it have happened in every hogwarts house. it’s just not discussed as much (or at all, really) because 1. we read the series from harry’s pov, and harry doesn’t experience it because he is canonically white and 2. discrimination based on blood purity is more relevant to harry’s story. )

because we read things from harry’s pov, and he’s a gryffindor student with mainly gryffindor friends, he’s not fully aware of the dynamics in other houses. at some point, i think in OotP, he makes an observation that cho’s surrounded by less friends than she was usually around earlier in the series. we see cho with marietta a lot because cho is a fiercely loyal friend and, when a majority of the students turn on marietta for exposing the DA, cho is one of the only people who sticks by marietta (umbridge was threatening her mother! it’s a lot more complicated than marietta just snitching on them unprompted!! i will vent about this another time!!!). cho doesn’t hide her decision to stand by marietta at all. but the main point is, harry doesn’t see the dynamic in the ravenclaw common room, and that’s where cho interacts with a lot of the other students in her house (who are, by the way, very supportive of her throughout the aftermath of the third task, but i mean. they’re students, still. they have other things to focus on, too, and cho doesn’t fault them for that.)

and for some of the students in particular— a thousand times yes, cho is friends with padma patil! padma and cho bond over things like being second/third-generation immigrants and cringing at how over-the-top south asian/east asian muggle dramas are and discussing potential benefits in applying eastern medicine and holistic health practices to wizarding healing care. ravenclaws have a diwali celebration every fall, and padma always calls dibs on doing the henna for cho's hands. through padma, cho’s also friendly with parvati (and, by extension, lavender brown, who’s actually quite similar in personality to marietta); they all got ready for the yule ball together! when cho was considering not wearing the cheongsam-inspired dress sent from her grandmother’s hometown (it seemed too showy! it didn’t seem like it was something one would wear to a yule celebration in scotland!), parvati was the one who was threatening to wear it herself if cho didn’t and kept talking about how it would be a shame to let a dress like that go to waste. 

other bipoc students: there’s a conversation at some point (i think also in OotP) where ron refers to michael corner as “the dark one”, and while that could be a reference to michael’s sense of humor or his personality, i’ve always taken it quite literally and headcanon that michael is a student of color, possibly black. (just my headcanon, though, and it’s totally fine if people who write michael corner portray him as white! the same goes for lavender; i also headcanon her as black.) 

cho is most likely friendly with angelina johnson and alicia spinnet, and after the ravenclaw vs. gryffindor games, they compliment each other and swap quidditch tips and offer hair care routines and discuss life things as they’re all cooling down in the locker rooms.

she doesn’t have many interactions with lee jordan, dean thomas, or blaise zabini (the other students of color joanne mentions more than once that i can think of off the top of my head). i headcanon a few of cho’s ravenclaw teammates as being students of color, too.

Things Wrong With The HP Series

Like, seriously, I love Harry Potter, but there was a ton of things that was wrong with the entire series.

1) Severous Snape

I must admit, he had a great character arch. But there were things that I couldn’t stand when it came to this guy.

But, first of all, it was his treatment of Harry. With the whole Death Eater are still around thing, him favoring the Slytherins and being mean to the kid who defeated Voldetorts kind of makes sense in a practical way. But he went too far with mistreating Harry! He was abusing the poor child!! There was no reason for him to go that far!!

The second thing was how creepy it was that he walked over a dead man’s body and ignored a crying and injured baby to cry over a dead woman’s body. Like, what the fuck is wrong with this man? Sure, there was and is the possibility of him being in love with Lily, but why the fuck would he do that? Why was he even there in the first place? None of this makes sense!!

2) Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore

I have a serious hatred for this man. I can point out so many things wrong with this man. Doing that will make this post pretty fucking long, so I won’t be doing that.

The first thing is that he dumps a recently orphaned child on a doorstep. In November. Where it’s really fucking cold out. With only what looks like a thin blanket and a letter. This man didn’t even have the decency to ring the doorbell. He doesn’t explain to the Dursley family why Harry is being left there in person. Do you see what’s wrong with this picture?

The second thing is that he, along with several other full grown wizards/witches, force a 14-year-old Harry to compete in a dangerous tournament that only three 17-year-old legal teens where suppose to compete in. Why? Because they wanted to draw out the person who put him in the first place. Harry didn’t have to compete. They could’ve called the whole thing a draw and have the goblet call another set of competitors. But did they? NO!!!!!

The third thing is how many positions of power he holds. Headmaster of a school, Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, and Supreme Mugwamp of the International Confederation of Wizards. That is a lot of power for one man. People only have one seat of power in modern society. When Trump became president, he stepped down as the head of the businesses he owned. Why Dumbledore didn’t have only one seat of power, I can only blame JK for this.

The fourth is that he had a family heirloom that rightfully belonged to Harry. He had no right to have this! Honestly, Harry would probably have one or both of his parents if they were still in possession of the cloak. But nooooo, Dumbledore just had to have the thing in order to study it! Sometimes I think that he caused the whole war and the Potters’ deaths to happen!

3) Minerva McGonagall

There’s not much that I can’t find much wrong with this woman, but it’s there.

First, she had watched the Dursley family all day and still let Dumbledore leave Harry there. Did she try to take him herself? No. Did she try to convince the old man to at least put a warming spell on him? No. This is possibly one of the worst things that she could’ve done, and she knew his parents. Things would’ve gone differently if McGonagall had done something.

Second, the fact that she holds three important jobs within Hogwarts. Debuts Headmistress, head of the Gryffindore house, and the teacher of one of the main subjects. Why the hell would she accept all three of them? Is she trying to be like Dumbledore? How far up the old man’s ass is her head?

4) The Hogwarts Staff

I have a huge problem with the whole lot of them! As a whole, they are incompetent, no lie! There are major issues here!

In Harry’s second year, they let the entire school and some of the other teachers abuse Harry for the whole Chamber of Secrets thing. They didn’t even try to stop anyone! This is a huge failure for them!

Harry’s fourth year had him unwilling entered into a dangerous tournament, followed by yet another year filled with abuse by the entire school! Yet again, the teachers did not try to stop them! They let the idiots go after Harry! The only one who seemed to help him was fake!Mad-Eye, which is highly suspicious.

For most of Luna’s time at Hogwarts was filled with being bullied by her fellow housemates. She didn’t go to any of her teachers, even her head of house, due to believing that they would make things worse. They made a bullied student believe that they would make her situation worse!

All of Snape’s student years involved being bullied by the same four students. Since they were favorites of all of the teachers at that time, those four students were not stopped. This is probably why Snape went to Voldetorts, and most likely the main reason why he has a deep hatred for Harry. More failures on their parts of these students’ school life.

5) The Number of Ethnic People in Hogwarts

The Patil Twins (Indian decent), Cho Chang (Asian decent), Blaise Zabini (black, possibly Italian), Lee Jorden (black), Dean Thomas (black), and probably three others at most. There are an extremely low number of people who basically do not look like an average white person.

This isn’t only a problem with this series, but with a whole bunch of there stories and/or movies/shows. The fact that there isn’t more representation for people not from whatever country the story is set is a problem.

The fact that, despite going through a war, everyone was all happy go lucky. Everyone was a-okay!

That is not how it works, Joanne. No one is okay after going through a war, Joanne. There should be some sign of them being traumatized, Joanne.

Honestly, this ending ticked me off. Like, that is how it ends? Everything is okay now? What do you mean they’re all basically getting along now? I’ve meet a war vet, don’t know where he served, and he wasn’t okay even years afterwards. The Fourth of July and New Years was probably the worst days of his life after getting back to the US, and this is probably the same thing for other vets. I’m not saying I’m an expert on this kind of thing, but it’s not how I kind of expected this series to end.
