Star Trek Fic Recs
This list was requested by @theadmiralbitch!
This list will include all ratings and tags, so read at your own discretion! :)
the inherent dangers of coffee dates by MourningElegance - Rated T
Ship: James T. Kirk/Leonard "Bones" McCoy
Oh fuck, Jim thinks to himself, eyes widening with sudden realization. He eyes the coffee cup in his hand, noticing the telltale hives beginning to peek out from his shirt sleeves. Fucking allergies-
- -
Of course James Kirk would go into full blown anaphylaxis in a crowded Starbucks. Lucky for him, the cute stranger he just met seems to know an awful lot about medical emergencies...
sound as stone by starknjarvis - Rated T
The three people who figured out that Jim was on Tarsus IV.
Predetermined by BonesOfBirdWings - Rated T
James T. Kirk always goes to Tarsus IV - because George Kirk can die, Vulcan can be destroyed, and Jim can be resurrected, but Tarsus IV is immutable.
OR - An exploration of the fanon fact that Jim always experiences the massacre on Tarsus IV, no matter the universe.
enough space to breathe by haveloved - Rated T
"You can't play dumb with a professional, Jim, or maybe you could with one who's not me. Never known you to turn down fruit, so that's weird enough, but the skipping lunch, the no coffee--"
"Bones." Jim's still smiling, but less than before. "Take a breath? It's Yom Kippur."
Jim chooses to fast for Yom Kippur for the first time in several years. Bones, being Bones, wants to make sure he's taking care of himself.

Im in tears, genuinely seeing this has brought me to tears because it’s everything I pictured while writing and more, and because I got to give you something I also desperately wanted in fandom and couldn’t find.
This is beautiful, I love everything about it (the stars! The way you drew the tallis and the texture in his hair!!) and I’m so, so glad you found my fic.
Tumblr media
like half a year ago at this point, i read @trekkele 's series VaYehi for the first time. a while ago i reread it and this scene got stuck in my head and wouldn't let me study until i drew it.
on a more personal note, my judaism has never been something i've been able to relate to through media. most jewish representation in the media i've had access to is either entirely nonpracticing, nonreligious jews or extremist parodies of ultraorthodox communities. reading Tefillot, i had a really incredible moment of being able to see an aspect of my identity and my religion connected to a character i love in a way i'd never had before. so i guess this is to say: thank you for that. it was honestly a pretty life changing moment.

It's on a double bill with "The Wrath of Khanukkah"
Realizing that Amok Time, from T'Pring's perspective, is basically the equivalent of a Vulcan Hallmark Movie, where a holiday (Pon Farr) makes our hero realize she wants hometown boy Stonn and a simple (Vulcan) life instead of big-city (space) boyfriend Spock, and it all comes to a head in an embarrassing misunderstanding in front of her family, is certainly making me feel some kind of way

Show Recommendations:
Star Trek Strange New Worlds: I love this version of Star Trek, this is like straight up fanfiction (the GOOD kind) come to life. It still addresses social issues, but instead of being dark and miserable, it’s very much hopeful. There’s time traveling, there’s body swapping, Spock-Made-Human, a MUSICAL episode. Jim Kirk shows up in a couple episodes, and I didn’t think I would like former Vampire Diaries actor playing him but I delightfully mistaken. They give Nurse Chapel and T’Pring personalities, all of the characters bring something to the table, and there’s like...next to nil romance. Spock and Nurse Chapel and T’Pring are about as close at it gets to romance, but it’s done well enough that I don’t mind. Also, I never thought I would love any captain as much as I love Kirk, but Pike is DANGEROUSLY close to becoming my favorite.
Joe Pickett: game warden in BFE Wyoming with his wife and two daughters. Decidedly darker as far as themes go, but it’s weirdly non-graphic with sensitive subjects in a good way - like there’s no swearing, no nudity, and the second season deals with rape and murder but you see neither of them actually take place. Animals are clearly CGI’d when they get injured. But I love Joe himself - he’s one of those Will Always Do the Right Thing even to his own harm. He’s a childhood abuse survivor, and second season is like whump central for him - he gets shot with an arrow, severely concussed, field medicine, delusional in woods by himself on he the run from some psychotic backwoods type. AND - one of the only modern shows that has an adopted kid who is just IMMEDIATELY a part of the family. (Looking at you, Yellowstone, with serious judgement). You like the characters you should, you hate the characters you should, and everyone plays their roles really well.
Justified: City Primeval - half the fun of this is that Raylan’s daughter is Timothy Olyphant’s real life daughter. Raylan is still his “Are You Serious Right Now?” dead pan self. Only two episodes so far, but I maintain if you liked the first series, you would like this one.
Vienna Blood: This is probably my favorite out of the recommendations (other than Strange New Worlds but this is a very different vibe). It takes place in Vienna, Austria, in the early 1900′s and it follows Max Liebermann and Oskar Rheinhardt as they investigate various murders/crimes. Max is a psychoanalyst, Jewish, and English when all three are not good things to be at the time in Vienna, and Oskar has to make sure Max doesn’t kill himself with some of his plans. 90% of their interactions can be summed up as:
Oskar: MAX, NO.  Max: MAX, YES.
I think 99% of the people who watch it ship Oskar and Max, but I think Max leans a little more towards aro/ace than anything else and Oskar tolerates his BS. Oskar figures out very quickly he cannot prevent Max from doing Dumb Things, so he tries to make sure Max does the Least Dumb Version of Dumb Things. They try and set up romance for Max, but it’s pretty background and not much comes of it - and I actually only remember him kissing the woman he likes once? But there’s three seasons, 6 episodes each, 3 storylines told in two parts.

alright but like. it's 1966. jim kirk is 35 years old. you have exactly enough information to know what kind of genocidal dictator he survived as a teen and made him into the starship captain he is today, a guy with an evangelical belief in liberal democracy and self-determination and the equality of all living beings, and who has a complicated relationship with food. nothing about this needs to be spelled out further because every moment of the show is already screaming "it's 1966 and this is the futuristic fantasy of a former WWII fighter pilot and our two leads are jewish men"

celebratory latkes
Fandom: Star Trek: TOS
Jewish Character: Spock
Bingo Squares Being Filled: Latkes & They Tried To Kill Us, They Failed, Let’s Eat
Rating: Teen and Up
Warning(s): minor mentions of blood and injury
“I think,” Spock says, the corner of his mouth tightening as he steps off the transporter pad and jolts his possibly-cracked ribs, “That I will make latkes tonight.” “...Latkes?” Jim asks, doing the smart thing and sitting down to wait for the doctor to come fix him up instead of running all over the place with a crap ton of injuries. “Yes,” Spock says, rummaging behind the transporter desk. “The fried potato pancakes.” “No, I know, just. Why?” Jim asks, leaning gingerly back against the wall.
Spock straightens, holding a small first aid kit. “You are aware that I am Jewish,” he says, factual, and sure, Jim is, but– “I didn’t know you were practicing,” Jim says, gratefully taking the gauze Spock hands him and pressing it to the sluggishly bleeding wound on his knee. Spock shrugs, the gesture unfairly fluid despite his injuries. If Jim tried to do that right now he would aggravate at least four separate cuts, three burns, a rolled wrist and his recently-relocated shoulder. “It is very private to me,” he explains, dropping down on the platform next to Jim. “I endeavor to pray three times a day. I do not always succeed, due to other obligations. I am vegetarian, so keeping kosher is no great ordeal. And I generally time my vacations to coincide with the holidays.” “Huh,” Jim says, trying to pretend he’s not reeling a little bit. He’d always figured Spock’s regular ten minute breaks on Beta shift were some Vulcan meditation thing, and he supposes they’re at least one of those. “Um. Apologies in advance for my ignorance, but what does that have to do with latkes?” “It is the fourth night of Chanukah,” Spock says, leaning his head against the wall next to Jim’s. “Latkes are a food traditionally eaten specifically on this holiday. In addition,” he pauses, hesitating. “Yeah?” Jim prompts gently, turning slightly to take in his profile. The soft gold light shines through Spock’s hair, turning it from near-black to hundreds of shades of brown. The cut of it against his face makes it seem like he’s almost glowing. There’s a smear of green blood under his eye and half a red handprint on his cheek from an ensign who’s hopefully recovering in Medbay right now. “It is a rather illogical sentiment,” Spock says finally, “But. Many view a significant part of the Chanukah celebrations to be about rejoicing in the survival of the Jews of the Second Temple against the odds. The Selucids attempted to kill them and failed.” “Like the assholes down there,” Jim realizes. “Hey, that’s pretty cool, you know?” Spock looks faintly amused. “Thank you, captain. I’m inclined to agree.” They’re quiet for a moment and then Spock opens his mouth, hesitating a second before saying: “I do not suppose–that is, would you like to join me? Tonight. While I make the latkes.” Jim draws back in surprise. “Really? It’s not, like, a religious ceremony or something?” “Yes, Jim, we dance around the shredded potatoes and sacrifice them to G-d,” Spock says dryly. “It is nothing compared to when we make the jelly doughnuts; that requires an altar, goat blood, incense, and the presence of at least four separate rabbis.” “There’s no need for sass,” Jim grumbles, crossing his arms. “I’m trying to be respectful of your cultural practices.” “It is much appreciated,” Spock says warmly. “However, latkes are simply a custom. There are no religious elements involved in their making. So?” “...So what?” “Would you like to join me?” Spock asks, and he doesn’t really do exasperated because of the whole Vulcan thing, but Jim thinks if he did, it would be at moments like this. “Oh! Uh, yeah, that sounds nice.” The transporter room’s doors hiss open, and Jim shrinks back at the sight of the fury on Bones’s face. “Assuming we survive that long,” he qualifies, and thinks maybe he hears an answering chuckle before Bones is across the room and submitting them to his furious ministrations.

WHAT KIND OF LOSER ALMOST MISSES HER OWN MCKIRKAVERSARY (this one I am that loser)
It has been one entire year since I posted absolution, my first official McKirk fic. I dreamed this baby up on a weekend morning and started writing, after years of admiring the folks in the fandom from afar. I am so, so grateful I did.
to @afterthenovels and @malionnes -- Anna gave me the prompt that became the fic, and Cait asked me the OTP meme questions that sparked me thinking about my own vision. Thank you both for getting me started.
To the USS McKirk folks: thank you for taking me into the fold. You are all so special to me. To mention just a handful of you:
@aishahiwatari and @demerite; best mods ever!
@aroacebones, for being the best partner in angst and never minding a 5 AM DM or fifty.
@lokilenchen and @excavatinglizard, both of whom surprised me with art for my later fic, both of whose talents amaze me every single day.
@better-late-than-nevah for understanding my desperate love for comments 😂
@spockats, my partner in word games, provider of medical knowledge!
@trek-tracks for the humor that keeps me going, and the sweetest words of praise a girl could want.
@sagesiren for loving Jewish Jim as much as I do!
@jenjiy for having the other half of the brain cell 😂
And to @fireinmywoods, thank you so much for giving us SIEL, a light in a dark year and the best communal experience I could have asked for so soon after officially joining the fandom!
I've said it before and I'll say it again: McKirk people best people. I'm so glad I fell in with you all. Let's keep it going a bunch more years. 💛💙

“Christine. These shifts interfere with her nightlife, you see, and as she saw fit to remind me, I have none, so better I be the one to molder away in an underground transfusion center.”
“I liked Christine. But if she sees fit to abandon me to the whims of a grouchy Southerner, I might displace her in my estimation.”
A vampire and a necromancer have a chat at a blood transfusion center.

"I saw a girl this morning who looked like my mother. It's strange--I haven't thought about my mother in decades, but after I wrote about her, she appeared before me. Part of me wanted to speak to her, this girl who seemed like my mother, but I didn't know what I would say. That I turned out to be so much more than she expected of me? And so much less? That I'm sorry I spent the better part of sixty years barely acknowledging her existence? That I don't remember exactly when she died? "Of course, it doesn't matter at all what I would say to my mother if I saw her again, because I didn't. It was just a girl with the same copper hair."

How little we know of ourselves at any moment; how distinctly human that is. There is such little grace given to the perfect messiness of desire. Even queers feel pressure to homogenize the experience into catchy slogans. The 'born this way' narrative, while politically expedient, has done untold damage to narratives of the queer experience, implying any number of horrible ideas: that you cannot move toward desire without some genetic component urging you to do so, that experimentation is inherently problematic, that you have to know your truest and deepest self to act on something. There were times in my adolescence where people asked me if I was gay and I said no, not out of a sense of self-preservation but because I truly believed it to be so. You can be a stranger to yourself; you almost certainly will be, at some point or another. It is inevitable, as inevitable as the moment of rupture that sends you hurtling toward the self you were always going to be.
from "Both Ways" by Carmen Maria Machado, her essay on Jennifer's Body in It Came from the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror (ed. Joe Vallese).

Trump Camp: NY Times Incites Violence Against Vance
Tumblr media
Supporters of former President Donald Trump are calling out The New York Times for an opinion piece on Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance and his rejection of "creedal nationalism."
"This is disgusting by @nytimes," posted on X Matthew Boyle, the Washington Bureau Chief for Breitbart News Network.
“Editors should intervene and correct this and apologize for it.”
"Really gross from the @nytimes," posted Jim Banks, a U.S. Senate candidate in Ohio.
"It's disgusting that the media is now pushing these ridiculous, violence inciting claims about @JDVance just two months after @realDonaldTrump was nearly assassinated," wrote Alex Bruesewitz, a Trump campaign adviser.
"Also friendly reminder to the media & the left that JD is the father of 3 biracial kids. They should immediately retract and apologize to JD."
All three included a screenshot of the opinion piece written by Times columnist Jamelle Bouie,
Tumblr media
titled, "JD Vance's Blood-and-Soil Nationalism Finds Its Target."
The piece's headline, though, has since changed to "Shouldn't JD Vance Represent All of Ohio?"
"This kind of propaganda is untrue — and dangerous," Steve Cortes, a former Trump adviser, wrote on X. "Corporate media viciously smears @JDVance, because he is so effective at unmasking their lies and narratives."
Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, posted: "So now the Times is directly calling JD Vance a Nazi. This is the kind of regime propaganda that nearly got President Trump assassinated. What else can we conclude except the NYT wants JD Vance dead?!"
Donald Trump Jr., also chimed in, posting: "Just months after a psychopath tried to assassinate my father, the @nytimes is now openly trying to incite violence against @JDVance. PS: JD is the father of 3 biracial kids, which makes this smear even more disgusting!"
The newspaper would "retract this and apologize" if they had any ethics, Andrew Surabian, a Republican strategist, wrote on X.
The Times, added Morgan Ortagus, a former spokesperson for the Department of State, "tries to somehow paint my friend @JDVance as the problem for American Jews."
"I can tell you from my public and private conversations with him, that he is ardently pro-Israel. Further, he refuses to tolerate the open season on Jewish Americans that has flourished under the Biden-Harris Administration. I look forward to the Oct 1st VP debate, where JD will absolutely expose Walz and Harris on these issues," she posted.
