idk if you would be into this BUT! i read your ask about tumblr archeology and i simply have to contribute this fic.

called observations, accessible here https://anon-j-anon.livejournal.com/30674.html, it’s essentially a book (i think like 200k words lol) written in 2009 that puts the AOS characters in the TOS deep space mission. a lot of the episodes are rewritten with their new counterparts— city on the edge of forever, arena, operation: annihilate!, what are little girls made of, so many more. it’s narrated by spock (his “observations” serving under jim) and definitely is a spirk fic, but i cannot emphasize enough how well it is written. contains math, philosophy, art discussions, and just has AMAZING characterizations into all of the cast (not just jim and spock but added depth into characters like chekov and chapel).

in my book it’s one of those “fandom foundational texts” but since it’s posted to livejournal, not ao3, i fear it’s kinda died off! but it is SUCH a good work i’m considering my duty as a star trek fan to spread it around. figured i would share it with you since you seemed interested in fandom revival!

hello friend! i've been working through this since you sent it and WOW. i can't believe the author saw star trek '09, went home, cracked their knuckles, and chose to write an ENTIRE K/S NOVEL. every day i'm blessed to have chosen star trek as my lifelong hyperfixation because i am treated SO WELL by other creators. thanks to them and thanks to you for sharing ♥

anyway. thoughts!

this fic is in such a unique format (first officer logs, spock's first person POV). i'll be honest that it takes some getting used to but i recommend giving it a shot! it really works with the story being told. like, really works.

for the sake of warning my fellow TOS and jim obsessed freaks, this is 110% AOS kirk. what i mean is that, personally, i don't tend to enjoy the hard, angry version of jim that's always watching his back and on edge... so if you're like me, this fic might make you wince a little at first. there's swearing and defensiveness right off the bat that i do not associate with the beloved version of james t kirk who lives inside my soul.... BUT.

but but but! i have still enjoyed what i've read so far! i think that really speaks to how thorough and simply enjoyable the writing is. jim is not out of character for AOS- in fact, he's incredibly in character and well written.

i can't express how much it means to me that you dropped this into my inbox! i never ever would have found it otherwise and although it might take me a while, i'm looking forward to finishing it in it's entirety :)

yes i do read star trek fanfic! i also write it!

Here is the link to my collection of star trek fics. They're all reader inserts, very fluffy, lots of gratuitous cuddling, and they can be read as platonic or romantic depending on your preference! I love reader inserts but im aroace, so often they can make me a little uncomfortable if they're too romantic or include sexual themes, so i started writing my own for other people who feel the same way :]

as for my favourites that other people have written:

This fic is a super cute, super fluffy, old married spirk fic. Jim goes away for a work trip and Spock ends up missing him more than he expected

This is a cool exploration of what pon farr would be like for an asexual vulcan! its very sweet and a little silly.

This one was written by my mutual @spirk-trek! though i didnt know that when i first read it. its one of my favourites that i come back to a lot. Spock cuts Jim's hair and its very domestic and comforting, and it also features some excellent descriptions of what mind melding feels like

And just one more, for luck. This one is a crack fic about Spock chasing a laser pointer. You know, like a cat. Absolutely hilarious and a super fun read

hiiii! I’m starting a new tradition, somewhat inspired by @fellshish ‘s really wonderful fanfic fridays, as well as all the incredible fic I’ve been reading lately and wanted to share!

Every Friday I’m going to share a fic I’ve read and really liked, along with a little summary and a bit of my thoughts on it (nothing spoiler-y I swear). Anyone else can feel free and encouraged to jump on with a reblog of one of their faves, something they’ve been reading, etc. (and self promo is ABSOLUTELY encouraged <333)

This week I’m starting out with Of Trees & Telepathy (Kirk/Spock 51k E) by @lemonemenom

Jim and Spock are sent on a diplomatic mission on a planet of telepathic aliens. They soon get dragged into the political machinations of the local government, though the conflict might not be so local after all…

There’s really really cool worldbuilding, wonderful spirk moments, incredible intrigue and tension building, really awesome ocs, just SO much cool stuff. This fic has so much of the alien cultural exploration that I love in Star Trek, and it’s super engaging. I read the entire thing in 1 night and I COULD NOT put it down. The mystery at the center of the story had me on the edge of my seat, and so many of the writing and style choices play into it so well!! The prose/writing are also just really really well done. I can’t stress enough how much y’all should go read this.

(spock is in love with jim. all that's left is to tell him. unfortunately, jim's having a little bit of trouble getting that through his head, so spock has to figure out how to say it in human terms. it's. it's great, go read it. spock catches him two fish and literally sweeps him off his feet, sarek quotes spice girls, and. just read it, please. i promise you won't regret it)

(this series contains some of my favorite pile fics ever. it manages to capture his character so well and the relationships in it feel so fleshed out despite the fact that it's fairly short as a series. it's sweet and a little sad and it made me cry a bit)

(this is, hands down, my favorite st slice of life fic. no contest. the dynamic between pike and jim is. indescribable, but it did make me cry quite a bit. the relationship between mccoy and kirk is happy dance worthy, and i don't say that lightly)

(ahhhh!!! this fic. just. all of it. jo is such a realistic baby, which is a weird holdup, but i hate when kids are talking dolls instead of the tiny little dumpster fires they are in real life. bones is written delightfully well, the twist at the end is so good and all around an excellent fic)

(these are my absolute favorite jewish trek fics ever. the bridge scene in the first one lives rent free in my head and i actually spent all of wednesday afternoon drawing it instead of studying for midterms. i love the examination of jim's relationship with his judiasm–how he's proud of it but scared of people knowing. it really touched a thread in my heart)

When an Angel Suffers, Even Death Weeps

Summary: Four go down to a planet that shows clear signs of a civilization, yet scans indicate no life forms. As stranger and stranger events unfold and members of the landing party disappear, Jim can’t be certain anymore that he will be able to bring back everyone alive. But who’s leading his crew astray? Will they find life on the Ghost Planet, or perhaps only death follows in their path?

Seriously go read this fic, you will not be disappointed!! It has the vibe of a kinda spooky star trek episode, but it's a love story, and I cannot express to you in enough words how amazing it is!! I have so many emotions over it. And there's incredible art to go with it too!!

I just had the pleasure of reading this story by @dogearedfriends and I think everyone else should too! I won't spoil too much but there's an accidental bond, Tarsus IV angst, awesome aliens/worldbuilding, and pure unadulterated LOVE! Here are a few little excerpts I enjoyed so so much ♥

"Jim’s mind feels like the sort of controlled chaos Spock associates with terran jazz music, the way absolute discipline allows him to improvise, adapt, change."

"And he thinks, in turn, that Spock’s mind feels exactly how the library felt to him when he was a child. He does not need to remind Spock that he loves the library."

HOW THEY DESCRIBE EACH OTHER'S MINDS!!! HELLO???

"The minds that were before have slotted perfectly into each other to form one mechanism. It’s like a heart, it thinks, or a very clever machine with only one purpose: to love."

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!

"Jim stirs, awake in an instant. One day, Spock hopes, he might let himself wake slowly. One day he might be certain, even in sleep, that he is safe."

This has now been archived into the Jim that lives in my head and is a part of his character forever now.

"As he eats, Spock allows himself to appreciate the sight of his friend. Cross legged on the bed, in only his underwear and attempting to shove an entire bread roll into his mouth at once. Spock thinks no being has ever been more beautiful."
