Prompt:
Buck thinks he and Tommy should send out a Christmas card together. Tommy agrees...Clipboard Buck appears đ
This was fun!! Thank you â€ïž
âEvan?â
âHm?â
âUm, when I- when we agreed to send out a Christmas card together this year, I can't say I was expecting all of this.â
Their front porch was decorated top to bottom in Christmas décor. Garland and bows around the door and front windows, small trees with white lights lining the steps, fake snow sprayed onto the glass framing of the front door. There were some boxes that were wrapped perfectly too, clustered together just past the top step.
It looked absolutely beautiful.
It also looked absolutely insane.
Especially since it was September.
The idea of sending out Christmas cards came to Buck a month earlier, as he moved into Tommy's place. He was putting away some things and found Maddie, Chimney, and Jee's card from the year before. The thought of him and Tommy sending out a card of their own for everyone to see was too enticing to pass up. Plus, it was a perfect way to let distant relatives know that he was in a committed relationship with another man without having to do the whole awkward, and downright ridiculous, coming out routine.
Tommy had agreed pretty quickly. He had learned by now to always be prepared for whatever Buck threw at him next, and he found it pretty exciting to say yes to all his little ideas and suggestions that he himself would never have thought about otherwise.
What Tommy didn't account for is that a suggestion like this would not be taken lightly. Not with Buck involved.
âWhat do you mean?â Buck asked, eyes shooting up from the clipboard he'd been staring down at.
âI just... I thought we'd pick a selfie, from our phones,â his voice wavered when he saw the look of utter disgust come over Buck's face, âand choose a template from Walgreens...â
Buck stood there, mouth hanging open. Like he couldn't believe such a crazy idea even came out of Tommy's mouth.
âThomas.â
Tommy sighed. The full name was never a good sign.
âChristmas cards are quite possibly the most important piece of stationary you can send out into the world.â
âSo, when we send out our wedding invitations they'll be, what, number two?â
âA Christmas card tells the people within your world,â Buck continued, ignoring Tommy's question, âthat the person or people you are with in that card is who matters the most to you.â
Tommy crossed his arms over his chest, nodding. âRight, but Evan, Babe,â he smiled, moving closer, hoping to cut the tension he had created, âI'm pretty sure most people toss their Christmas cards like, as soon as they get them, or the day after Christmas.â
Buck shook his head. He lifted some papers from his clipboard and pulled out a sheet that he handed to Tommy. âNot this one. Ours is going to be made from botanical paper,â he said, pointing down at one of the options on the paper. âThey'll plant it somewhere around their house or in a pot or something and from our love, plants will grow!â He smiled brightly as he finished his explanation, eyes wide and filled with excitement.
Tommy couldn't help himself. Buck was so cute when he got this way. There wasn't a piece of Tommy that ever wanted to dull Evan's happiness from even the smallest things in life. He leaned forward and gave Buck a gentle peck on the lips. âThat's adorable,â he said, handing the paper back to Buck, âand very sweet.â
âI, uh, I think so too.â A blush rose on Buck's cheeks. Even after all these months together, he still got butterflies in his stomach when Tommy kissed him or was on board with one of his plans.
The thing was, Buck knew that he could be a lot to deal with sometimes. He knew people got frustrated when he had a clipboard in his hands. He knew he could get obsessive and overdo it. And, while Tommy may sometimes suggest simpler options (which were obviously wrong and insane), he never made fun of Buck or belittled him. Buck never had to worry about being too much with Tommy, and that was such a freeing feeling.
âNow!â Buck rocked up on his tippy toes, getting back to his list. âWe've got our first photographer coming in half an hour. Our next one comes at one. Then we've got to wait until four for the last one, so you'll have to change out of your outfit or put on a robe or something so you don't spill.â
âWe... We've got three photographers coming?â
Buck nodded, double checking his list. âYes. Uh, three today, two tomorrow.â
âSo five then? Five photographers coming?â
âCorrect.â
âEvan, honey,â Tommy placed his hands on Buck's biceps, pulling his attention from the clipboard yet again. âWhy exactly do we have five photographers coming?â
âTo make sure we get the best photos?â Buck replied as though it was the most obvious thing in the world.
âRight... Right, okay. Alright, well, you just tell me what to do and when to do it and I will be there.â
Buck leaned in this time, a hand placed at the nape of Tommy's neck, and kissed him. âFirst,â he said once he pulled away, âI've gotta go get the house ready for the dog. He'll be here in fifteen minutes.â
âOkay,â Tommy agreed. Buck was already back in the house when his words sunk in. âWait! Dog?!â Tommy called out, âEvan, we don't have a dog!â
âWe do today!â

New Fic: wake up, boy, you're far from home
I lied about my last post of the year. Here it is. 5pm December 31st.
This was prompted by @goldenbcnes - love you, Nova! Hope you enjoy it!
Summary:
Eddie is miserable in El Paso, having seemingly made things worse. Buck is miserable in Los Angeles, without him. When Buck agrees to go home to Hershey for the holidays, everything implodes.
Snippet:
âMom and Dad have invited us for Christmas this year,â she says. âThat might be fun, right? Hershey? Snow - a proper white Christmas?â
Bad idea. Definitely a bad idea.
âThey want me to come?â Buck asks.Â
âYeah,â Maddie says. âThey do. We just chatted.â
Then why didnât they call him themselves? Only had the energy to extend the invite to one child, and they picked the favorite? No. Thatâs not how this went down. He knows everyone well enough to see that. They called Maddie. To invite Maddie, Chim, and Jee. And Maddie didnât want to exclude him. Thatâs all this is.Â
Once again, Buck is an afterthought, and nothing more. But not to his sister. He has never been to Maddie. Maybe sheâs the only person he can really say that about, even if he didnât believe it for years.

Oh hi!
For my wintery ask to you, I'm sending đ
đœ and marshmallow. :)
Hellooooo! Thanks for sending a stocking ask. One ficlet for marshmallow. 570 words . Hope you like it đ
His phone is ringing which considering the time is enough to make Buckâs heart rate spike. Itâs way past the acceptable time for calling without an important reason. Grabbing his phone and seeing Maddies face and name lit u does nothing to calm him down. Itâs way past eleven. What's happened?
He answers the phone intent on finding out âwhatâs wrong?â
âElves! Stupid things. I hate them.â
Itâs not anything close to what he was expecting. At least itâs not an emergency or a disaster which considering thier lives is more than possible.â
âOk and why do we hate elves atâ he checks the time â11.23 at night?â
âBecause I forgot about them tonight and Howieâs on an extra shift tonight and I have not idea what to do with the damn things! I need help! You're my help!â
Maddie sounds at the end of her tether, hardly surprising the holidays are stressful, thereâs a lot to do and the elves are, he knows from Chimney a major source of stress. He makes a mental note to not start any elf shenanigans when he has kids,
ââOk⊠what have you done already?â
âEverything! Stupid things, maybe they can have an accident tonightâŠâ
âMaybe not, letâs not traumatise Jee ok Mads.â
âThey deserve it, they could get locked out or get flushed down the toilet, the ovenâŠâ
âMaddie!â He stops her, almost shocked at the level of homicidal rage she has towards the naughty Christmas elves Jee loves to see every morning. âFlour footprints?â
âBasic, did it week one.â
âDrawing on the fruit?
âDone it.â
âUsing the pans as drums?â
âFun but done it.â
âPlaying cards?â
âBoring!â
âTop of Christmas tree? Melted ice cream? Stuck to the ceiling? Grated carrot?â
âBuck, youâre meant to be helping me. Iâve done all that, itâs almost Christmas Eve, Iâve got to get creative now!â
Ok⊠um what have you got in the cupboards?
Almost at once he can hear cupboard doors opening and closing.
âThereâs nothing useful! What am I going to do?â
âWeâll think of something, donât worry.â
With his sister calling out things from her cupboards he tries to think of Christmasy things. Cookies, mistletoe, snow, stockings, trees, presents, baubles⊠one of his ideas comes back to him; snow.
âMaddie, you got any marshmallows?â
âUmm⊠yeah, why?â
âBig ones or small?â
âBoth.â
Hoping this idea goes down better than the others he takes a breath.
âOk, build a snowhouse out of the big ones and then use the others for snow and make a snow angel shape with the elf.â
He waits hopefully. Thereâs silence on the other end of the phone, then a sigh of relief followed by his sister's voice.
âThatâs brilliant. Buck youâre a genius! I love you.â
Then she hangs up. About 15 minutes later he gets a picture of the elves doing exactly what he suggested, it looks good if he does say so himself.
Maddie sends a text that says thank you and heart emojis that make him smile.
The next one she sends doesnât. It says; great job tonight so you can help again tomorrow.
Looks like Maddieâs elf problem is his too now, but then whatâs family for if not to put mischievous elves into situations together. He opens a new browser page on his phone and types âelf on a shelf ideasâ⊠who needs sleep when there are nieces to keep happy.

Oops, somebody may have pushed back their gift shopping a little too much, and now the shops are filled with people and shelves are empty, whatâs a queer man supposed to do? New bucktommy oneshot just landed!
I'll Crawl Home To Him
This was supposed to be a short drabble of an alternate meeting but it quickly ran away from me, lol.
Read on ao3 or below.
Enjoy!
**********
Word: 12,478
Rated: E
Summary:
Buck, visiting his parents with his sister and her family, end up leaving the house in a snowstorm after his parents prove yet again that they were incapable of change.
After finding himself at a local motel to get out of the storm, he unexpectedly finds himself spending the whole evening with the owner, who by an incredible coincidence used to work at the 118.
Before the night is over Buckâs entire world has been flipped upside down. But leaving to go back home was not going to be easy
**********
Buck knew it was a stupid idea to walk out of the house when a snow storm was just beginning but he was just so mad! Mad at his parents for being typically them, mad at his sister for convincing him to go there in the first place, but most of all he was mad at himself for, yet again, for believing that they had changed.
It had taken a while and a boat load of therapyâboth separately and togetherâafter the heart wrenching revelation of Buck having had an older brother that had died and everybody had kept it quiet like a dirty secret, for Buck to trust that they truly regretted their mistakes and wanted to make things right. The thing is, Buck knew that they would never have the kind of relationship he had wished that they could have had when he was growing upâhe knew that that ship had sailed. He had accepted that at best they could have the kind of relationship where they could stand to be in the same room without fighting and maybe come to a mutual respect for one another.
But just as he had started to believe that they really did mean it when they said they wanted to change and build a relationship with their son, they show their trueïżœïżœïżœand oldâcolours.
Heâd had fights with his parents before; more than he could count, but this one, despite it being no different than other fights theyâd hadâhis parents critiquing his life choices like they had done a thousand times beforeâhit different this time.
Maybe because it had been a while since theyâd done it. Maybe because heâd believed theyâd changed. Maybe because Maddie and Chim and Jee-Yun were there too or maybe because it was winter in Pennsylvania and he fucking hated the cold!
But it did hit different. He could almost hear the snap in his heart as his mother spat her usual vitriol at the son who could never do right.
His eyes were streaming as he trudged along the sidewalk-less roadâa mixture of emotion and the ice-cold wind blowing into his face. He didnât have a destination in mind when he left the houseâhe just knew he needed to get out. Get away.
He had no idea how long he had been walkingâheâd turned off his phone after the 15th call from Maddie heâd ignored, and he hadnât put his watch back on after shower heâd had just before the fight with his parents. Heâs was only wearing sweats, a T-shirt and hoodie when he left the houseâstopping only to put on his sneakersâand the snow that was now coming down heavily had quickly soaked his clothes through.
He knew heâd walked roughly 6 miles when he rounded a bend in the road and the Mountain Laurel motel came into view. He could have honestly walked another 20 miles, fuelled entirely by the anger he felt, but he was soaking wet and the last vestige of logical thinking left in his head told him it was probably a good idea to stop.
The sign high above flashed âvacancies, in big neon purple letters in front of the parking lot at the front of the motel that empty save for one truck parked by the entrance. He opened the creaking door to the foyer and stepped along the old, threadbare and ugly brown carpet, feeling a pang of guilt for leaving a wet trail in his wake.
The place smelt as though someone had emptied an empire can of pine scented air freshener and it made Bucks throat dry breathing it in. He approached the high mahogany counter and palmed at the scuffed bell and waited.
âOne second!â Came a deep voice from the back room. A few seconds later the door at the back opened and a tall, well built man appeared wiping his mouth with a napkin. Buck immediately noticed the manâs striking blue eyes as he looked across at him.
âSorry, was eating dinner.â He said. âWelcome to the Mountain Laurel. Youâre looking for a room?â
âUh, yeah. Please.â Buck answered wrapping his arms around himself in a pointless attempt to stop himself from shivering.
âHmm, that might be difficultâweâre very busy tonight.â The man answered.
âOh. Uh..â He truly couldnât take anymore and was on the verge of more tears. The man noticed and his expression immediately changed.
âThat was a joke.â He corrected. âSorry, Iâve always been told I have a bad sense of humour. Weâre actually completely empty tonightâyouâre our only guest so if you want a room you have your pick of any.â He smiled warmly and deep lines appeared around his eyes. Buck let out a sigh of relief.
âHonestly, any room is fine.â He said sighing. The man typed on the computer that looked like it was made before he Buck was born, then unhooked a key from the hooks on the wall behind him.
âRoom number two it is.â He said. âName?â
âEvan Buckley.â
âHow long are you staying, Evan?â
âUh..â Buck hadnât thought about that. He hadnât thought heâd be staying in a motel at all. âI..â
The man seemed to sense that Buck was struggling and offered a helping hand. âIâll put you down for one night and if you want to extend your stay just let me know.â
âThanks, th-that would be, uh.. yeah.â
âGood. Are you paying by cash or card?â
âCard.â He said opening his wallet. The man gave him the price and completed the transaction before handing Buck his card back and then a room key.
âSecond room on the left as you go outside. You need any help with bags?â
âNo, I.. I didnât come with any.â Buck admitted.
âOh.â The man said with surprise. âWell, if you need anything Iâll be here.â He smiled again and Buck tried to reciprocate but didnât have the energy for anything other than a half smile.
The room was as basic as heâd expected for a cheap Pennsylvania motel. A double bed, with surprisingly white linen for this type of establishment, on one side of the room, with a cheap wooden nightstand on either side of it, each with a lamp. Opposite the bed was a mid sized dresser with a TV from the dark ages sat atop.
Usually the first thing heâd check was the state of the bathroom but he simply didnât have the energy to do so. Instead he slumped onto the edge of bed and put his head in his hands.
A knock at the door startled him. He opened it to find the man from the reception standing there.
âUh, hey..â
âTommy.â The man introduced.
âTommy, right. Is everything okay?â
âYeah, I, uh, thought you could use these.â He held out a small pile of clothes. Buck looked at him with a mixture of surprise and confusion. âYouâre clearly soaked to the bone and you said you didnât have any bags with you. Theyâre nothing specialâjust some old sweats, a T-shirt and hoodie. No underwear thoughâthat would be weird.â He chuckled.
Buck felt kind of pathetic. This guyâTommyâpitied him. Why else would he offer his clothes to a stranger? He was a grown man for god sake and here he was contemplating accepting clothes from a stranger and all because he didnât want to see his parents.
âIf you donât need them..â Tommy began to say and Buck almost snatched the clothes out of his hand. Regardless of how he was feeling about it, he couldnât deny that he was soaking wet and freezing cold, and a hot shower and fresh clothesâeven those belonging to a strangerâdid sound nice.
âNo! I mean.. thank you thatâs.. that would be helpful.â Tommy handed them over. âThanks, To-Tommy.â
âYouâre welcome, Evan. And if want a beer or something to eat Iâll be in the entertainment centre.â
Buck raised his eyebrows in surprise. âYou have an entertainment centre?â
âWe have uncomfortable chairs, a flat screen and beer fridge if that counts?â
Buck couldnât help let out a huffed laugh. âUh, I donât knowâIâm pretty exhausted.â He told Tommy honestly.
âFair enough. Well, if you change your mind.â Tommy shot him a finger gun and began to turn away.
âThanks.â
âYouâre welcome, Evan.â
Buck considered correcting Tommy and telling him heâd rather go by Buck, but he really didnât care all that much. Heâd spent the last 3 days continuously correcting his parents which didnât make a damn differenceââWe chose your name so we have the right to use it.ââhis mother had said, and quite frankly he was tired of correcting.
He finally decided to inspect the bathroom and was impressed to find it was actually cleanâno soap scum on the mirror or around the sink, no mildew in the bathtub or white calcium build up on the shower. And the toilet actually looked like it had been cleaned!
He turned on the shower above the bath tub, removed his wet clothes and got in under the hot water, hoping the heat would wash away his feelings.
He wasnât that lucky.
**
He inspected himself in the full length mirror on the back of the bathroom door. He almost laughed at how ridiculous he looked in Tommys clothes. The shirt and hoodie were fine, if a little bigger on him than he would usually prefer. But the sweatpants were loose on the ass, tight on the thighs and short on the leg.
They smelled really good he had noticedâa warm, spiced scent. He toyed with the idea of asking Tommy what detergent he used but that would probably be weird, right? Although no weirder than giving a stranger your clothes he supposed.
He looked at his still turned off phone and contemplated turning it on to call Bobby as he would tell him it would be okay. But, quite frankly, he didnât want that. At least not yet. He was righteously angry and didnât need anybody telling him itâll all be okay.
Instead, he turned it not, ignored all the messages that came in, shot a quick text to Maddie telling her he was okay and needed space, then shut it off again and left his room.
He walked into the âEntertainment centreâ, which Tommy wasnât kidding when he described itâa few tables with chairs, a flat screen tv on the back wall and a small counter which presumably had a beer fridge behind it. The door opened behind him and Tommy walked into the room.
âEvan. You changed your mind.â He said with a surprise. His eyes looked down Bucks body wearing his clothes and he raised an eyebrow when he saw the flash of ankle sticking out of the bottom of the sweatpants. Buck felt himself blush.
âLong legs.â He answered to an unasked question.
âI can see.â Tommy replied; the corner his mouth rising. âCan I get you a beer?â
âUh, Yeah.â Tommy removed two bottles from the fridge behind the counter, opened them both and handed one to Buck. âThanks.â Tommy leant on the counter as Buck stood looking at his surroundings. âSo how long have you worked here?â Tommy laughed into his beer bottle. âWhat?â
âI own the place, kid.â
âOh.â
âThat surprise you?â He asked.
âKinda, yeah.â
âWhy?â Tommy asked.
âYou look like you.. I dunno.. like-like youâd do something more physical for a living.â He replied looking at Tommyâs arms. The plaid shirt he was wearing over a Henley wasnât exactly hiding his large biceps. He wondered if they were bigger than his.
âYouâre not exactly wrongâIâm actually a firefighter.â
âNo way? Iâm a firefighter too.â Buck excitedly said.
âYeah? Here in Hershey?â
âUh, no, thank god. L.A. The 118.â
Tommys mouth slackened and he stared at Buck in disbelief. âNash still Captain?â
Now it was Bucks turn to be in a state of disbelief. âYou know Bobby?â
Tommy chuckled. âHe was my captain.â Buck put his beer down on the counter a little too hard and foam rushed out of the top of the bottle.
âShit! Sorry!â He tried bent forward to catch some of it in his mouth and Tommy just looked at him wide-eyed before swallowing and grabbing some paper towels from under the counter.
âDonât worry, I got it.â He lifted up the bottle and wiped the counter down.
âI canât believe Bobby was your captain. When did you leave the 118?â
âI transferred out about 6 years agoâwent to harbor.â
âHoly shit youâre Tommy!â Buck exclaimed after doing the math in his head.
âUsually.â He quipped.
âYou helped us with that fire at Doheny Park.â
Tommy nodded remembering Howieâs call. âWell, it wasnât just me, but yeah. How is Howie by the way? We havenât spoken in a while.â
Buck couldnât help but laugh. âHeâs good. Heâs, uh, actually engaged to my sister, Maddie. Got a kid, too.â
âWow! Good for him.â
âYeah. Heâs here, actually, with Maddie and my niece.â Buck told him. Tommyâs face changed to confusion.
âSo why are you here and not with them?â
It was a valid question but Buck wasnât really sure if he wanted to answer it. Truth be told he actually wanted to scream it all out; get all of the frustration and anger and resentment out of his system, but Tommy had already done enough for him by lending him his clothesâthe last thing he needed was to hear about Bucks pathetic family problems.
âTheyâre, uh.. theyâre with my parents.â He simply answered.
âAnd Iâm guessing you donât want to be?â Tommy gathered.
âNope.â Buck said simply. Tommy correctly ascertained that he didnât want to talk about it and changed the subject.
âSo, whatâs the 118 like these days?â He asked instead and Bucks face opened into a smile.
âItâs good. Weâre a family. I couldnât imagine being stationed anywhere else.â
âThatâs good. I remember Captain Nash introducing family dinners.â Tommy said fondly remembering them.
Buck nodded as he sipped his beer. âHe still does them. Actually, heâs been teaching me since I joined and recently heâs started letting me cook for everyone.â
âYeah?â
âIâm not as good as him, but the team seems to like it. So, was Bobby always your captain?â
Tommys shifted uncomfortably in his stance and sighed. âNo. For most of the time I was there we had Gerrard at the helm.â
âChim and Hen have talked about him. Bad guy, right?â
âThatâs putting it mildlyâhe was a bigot. And I.. he did not make me a better person.â
Buck wanted to ask what he meant but wasnât sure if he could. Tommy, however, surprised him.
âI wasnât the kindest to Hen and Howie when they first joined the 118.â He admitted. âI never agreed with the things that Gerrard would say or how he treated them, but I was way deep in the closet back then and terrified of being found out and Gerard making me a target. Thatâs not an excuse, by the wayâI was wrong in how I handle it; handled him, but like I saidâhe did not make me a better person.â He took a sip from his bottle then continued picking at the sticker on it.
Buck wasnât sure how to respond to Tommyâs candour. He obviously felt badâhis body language and facial expressions gave that away as he was speaking.
âI mean, if it makes you feel better whenever Chim and Hen talk about you itâs always positive.â
âHmm.â Tommy responded, neither negative nor positive.
âWere you, uh.. out at the 118? I mean when Bobby took over?â
Tommy shook his head. âNo. I knew everyone else would probably be fine with it, but I wasnât. It wasnât until I moved to Harbor that I stopped lying about who I was.â Tommy walked out from the counter and gestured towards one of the tables and they both sat down.
âIs that why you transferred?â
âNo, I missed flying. Used to do it in the army.â
âGod youâre so fucking cool!â Buck exclaimed without thinking and immediately felt his face flush with embarrassment. He could have sworn, though, that he saw a subtle blush to Tommyâs cheeks too.
âYou need to raise your bar, kid.â
âCome onâyouâre a firefighter and a pilot!â Buck argued. Tommy held his eyes to him for a moment and smiled.
Buck felt a warmth run through him as he looked at Tommy. He wondered what it would have been like if heâd have joined the 118 and Tommy was still there. Not to mention It was one hell of a coincidence that the man who left the 118 and creating the space for him to join, happened to be running a hotel a few miles away from his parentâs house.
âItâs crazy isnât it?â
âWhat is?â
âYou and me, here. I-I mean you leave the 118 so that I can join. 6 years later youâre running a motel in my home town.â
âIt definitely is strange.â Tommy said.
âHow come youâre here?â
âThis placed used to belong to my dad.â
âDid he hand it down to you?â
Tommy almost choked on his beer. âGod no! He be turning in his grave if he knew I owned the place.â
âOh, Iâm sorry. I didnât realise heâd passed away.â
Tommy waved him away âDonât beâhe was a bastard. He was the reason I knew how to handle Gerrard. He actually left the place to my uncle in his will, but then he died a few months ago and it was passed on to me. Iâm only keeping it open until I can find a buyer, then Iâm going back to L.A.â
âBack to Harbor?â
âThatâs the plan.â He finished the last of his beer. âYou want another?â
âSure.â Buck said finishing off the last of his. Tommy got them both a fresh bottle and sat back down.
âThanks.â
Tommy looked at Buck with narrowed eyes for a moment before a wave of realisation came over him. âI just realised who you are.â
âThe hottest firefighter in L.A?â Buck joked.
âThat too.â Tommy said with a smirk and Buck found himself blushing again. Tommy noticed but said nothing of it.
âYouâre the guy that got crushed by the engine.â
Bucks smile slowly fell. âUh, yeah. That-that was me.â He looked down at his beer bottle.
âIâm sorry, Evan. We donât have to talk about it.â Tommy said softly.
âNo itâs.. itâs fine. It was just a hard time, you know?â
âI can imagine.â
âI thought my career was over. I got through all the surgeries and rehab, and just when I passed my recertification I threw a blood clot in my lung. Puked up blood all over Bobby and Athenaâs patio.â
âJesus, Evan.â
âYeah. Then I was on blood thinners for a while and Bobby wouldnât let me back on the team out of fear something would happen to me.â
âThat makes sense.â
âI know that now, but back then? Man, I was so angry. And desperate. The 118 was, is, my life. Itâs the only thing Iâve ever done that meant something and the idea of losing it?â He swallowed away the emotion rising in his throat. It was years since it happened but the memory of the fear and trauma of what he went through were a still a part of him. Likely would be forever.
âIâm ashamed to admit but I actually tried to sue the department. And Bobby.â
âSeriously?â
âYep. Like I said I was just so angry. I couldnât understand why they wouldnât let me back in. Yeah I was on blood thinners but I was on them and survived a god damn tsunami. Saved some lives too.â
âYou were in the tsunami?â Tommy asked.
âI was on the pier with my best friendâs kid when it hit.â
âSounds like you need to be wrapped in bubble wrap.â
âI think that was Bobbyâs thought, too. Anyway, eventually I came to my senses and dropped the lawsuit. And-and Bobby realised that he needed to trust that I was ready and let me back in.â
âWhat about the blood thinners? You still take them?â
âNo.â He said âturns out it was the bolts on my leg causing them. Once they removed them I was back to normal.â He smiled.
âHereâs to that.â Tommy lifted up his beer and Buck clinked his bottle into Tommyâs. âAny other life threatening injuries on the job?â
âThe emergency tracheotomy wasnât on the job so that doesnât count, but-â
âHold up.â Tommy sat up in his seat âyou had an emergency tracheotomy?â
Buck pulled down the neck of his, well, Tommyâs, T-shirt to show him the faded scar. âYep. Worst first date ever.â
âIt happened on a first date?!â
Buck couldnât help but laugh at Tommyâs shock.
âShe was the one who did it.â
âHoly shit, really?!â
âYep. With a steak knife.â He added. Tommys eyes widened. âI feel like I should point out she was a 911 operator so not exactly a laymen. But she had someone one the phone talking her through it.â
âJesus, Evan. Anything else?â
âI did get struck by lightning.â
Tommy choked on the sip of beer he was drinking and coughed.
âAre you okay?â Buck asked.
âAre you?!â Tommy threw back.
âMiraculously, yeah. Though technically I did die for over 3 minutes.â He said plainly.
âI think Iâm might have to wrap you in bubble wrap and keep you here for safety.â Tommy said shaking us head.
âWhat, like your pet?â Tommys head quickly shot back to Buck. His head was tilted with a soft smirk on his face.
Buck didnât know what he said that. Tommys pet? Really? jesus, Evan!
âYou have any major injuries at work?â He quickly moving the conversation along.
âJust one.â He stood and lifted his shirt up to reveal a long scarâabout 4 inches longâon the right side of his upper torso. âFactory explosion. Caught a big piece of shrapnel.â
Before Buck knew what he was doing his hand was reaching out and his fingertips were delicately tracing the scar. Tommy audibly inhaled a breath and goosebumps exploded on his skin. The sound of Tommy breathing in brought Buck back to reality.
âIâm-Iâm sorryâI shouldnât have.. that wasnât.. sorry.â He quickly withdrew his hand and sat it in his lap. He suddenly couldnât look Tommy in the eye. What the hell was that he just did?!
âItâs fine.â Tommy said lowering his shirt and sitting back down.
âSo what happened with the tracheotomy first date? Did anything happen with them?â
âYeah, I uh, actually lived with her for a while. Sorry of accidentally, really.â
âHow do you accidentally live with someone?â Tommy asked, a curious look on his face. Buck chuckled.
âShe was taking care of her mom at the time, Alzheimerâs, and after she died I wanted to better for her to help her through it. At some point I just sort never left.â He explained.
âBut you broke up eventually?â
Buck sighed. âYeah. She, uh, was having a hard time with her moms passing and decided to go travelling; have a âEat, Pray, Loveâ experience, which, I didnât know what that meant at the timeâdid you know it was a book? Apparently this lady wanted to find herself after getting divorced. Which I kind of get. Not-not the divorce partâthe finding yourself part-â Buck stopped himself. âSorry, Iâm rambling.â
âRamble away, I donât mind.â Tommy told him with an easy smile. It made Buck feel at ease. Plenty of people, mostly exes, had told him they didnât mind him rambling but he knew they were just saying it to not hurt his feelings. But there was something about how Tommy was looking at him that told him he was being genuine.
âAnyway, long story short she never came back.â He sipped his beer. âMmm, thatâs not trueâshe did come back about a year and half later with a fiancĂ© in tow.â
âOuch.â Tommy said. Buck nodded in agreement.
âBut I mean I get it nowâshe was an older woman and sheâd lived so long being the safety net for other people and sheâd lost herself along the way. I think being with me reminded her of being a little more care free, but it wasnât sustainable. Least not for her.â
âHow old was she?â
â45.â
âAnd you were?â
âUh, 23.â
âSo you like them older?â Tommy smirked.
Buck laughed. âUh, not really. I mean I donât really care about age, itâs more about competency for me. I like people who are good at what they do and can confidently do it.â
âI get that.â He said. They held eye contract for a moment and Buck realised he actually felt a little better than he had when he had walked in. There was something so easy about Tommy. He never would have shared what he had with anybody else heâd just met.
âWhat about you? You ever had your heart broken?â Buck asked.
âOnce.â Tommy answered. âGuy I served with. For obvious reasons we kept it secret, but after we got discharged I thought that we could actually have something. Turned out he just saw me as a way to pass the time while on tour. Heâs married to a woman now with a couple of kids.â
âIâm sorry, thatâs.. that sucks.â
âIt did for a while.â He confessed.
âYou ever come close since?â Buck asked.
Tommy shook his head. âNot really. Iâve dated here and there but most guys that are attracted to me because of my physique and being a firefighter.â
âYeah, it must be so hard being so hot.â Buck teased. Tommy laughed and nudged Bucks leg with his knee under the table then turned it back on Buck.
âBut you think Iâm hot?â Tommy looked at Buck and pursed his lips. Buck lost all moisture in his mouth and is heart thudded against his ribcage. It wasnât.. itâs not like he didnâtïżœïżœknow Tommy was.. Look, anybody with working eyes could see that he was gorgeous. He was tall, board and muscular and that cleft.. heâd be lying if he said he didnât, kind of, sort of, maybe a little bit want to poke his pinky finger into it. Those eyes tooâbig and blue and surrounded by extraordinarily long eyelashes.
âYou know you are.â He said back trying to sound confident. Tommy simply smirked again in response.
âWell, it would be nice to meet someone who was interested in getting to know me as a person.â
âNah, I get itâpeople are impressed with the job but once they realise youâre an actual person with feelings they donât stick around for long.â Buck commiserated with him.
âItâs why I donât date people I meet on calls anymore.â
âUh-huh.â Buck said into his bottle. âYou know I once met an ex responding to a helicopter crash, which.. should have been the first clue.â
âYeah itâs never works out the way you expect.â Tommy agreed.
âLearned that the third time around.â Buck laughed. âI met the last one at a living funeralâshe was a death doula.â
âWhat the hell is a death doula?â Tommy asked.
âShe helped people who were terminally ill accept that they were dying and supported them through it.â Buck explained.
âOh, well thatâs noble.â
âYeah, I thought so. Until all she wanted to talk about was when I died from the lightning strike.â He said and Tommy scoffed.
Without warning everything went dark and silence surrounded them.
âWell that was creepy timing.â
âGod damn electrics in this place!â Tommy complained with a sigh and turned on the flashlight on his phone. âI swear one tiny breeze and this whole place will fall down.â
âCan you fix it?â Buck asked.
âOrdinarily I would be able to get it going again, however.. the electrics are in a separate building out back and..â he pointed to the window behind Buck. He turned around to see the blizzard raging outside.
âJesus! Yeah you canât go out in that.â
Tommy pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed again. âOkay. Hereâs what weâre going to do.â He took the key to his room and held it out to Buck. âYou go to my room, and Iâll lock up the place and meet you there in a minute.â
Buck looked at him with a hint of surprise on his face. âY-your room?â
âThe heat in all the rooms runs on electricâmy room is the only one that also has a fireplace. So unless you want to freeze to death itâs the best place to be to keep warm.â
âRi-right. That makes sense.â Buck conceded.
âFirst room outside.â
âYou have a flashlight?â Buck asked.
âCanât you use the one on your phone?â
âNo, itâs in my room. And turned off.â Tommy analysed Buck for a second before brushing it away. âOkay. Hold on here for a second.â
Buck heard him moving around in back room for a minute before walking back out with an open backpack in his hands. He opened the fridge behind the counter and he heard the clinking of bottles being shoved inside it.
âGod that snow is really getting heavy.â Buck said looking out the light the glass door. There was at last 2 or 3 inches on the ground and there was no signs of it letting up.
âYeah. You ready?â Tommy asked.
âYeah.â
Tommy opened the door letting Buck out and quickly closed and locked it. They both raised their forearms to shield their faces from the snow as walked quickly to Tommys door 10 or so feet away.
âYou got the key?â
âShit. Right, yeah.â Buck took it from his pocket and unlocked the door and they entered the room with Tommy shutting and locking it behind them.
âHold on one second..â he said putting his backpack down and unzipping it. He removed a large pillar candle and a lighter from the bag and lit it. The room was subtly illuminated in a warm glow. It wasnât enough to really get a good look at the room, but from what Buck could see it Tommy was definitely a tidy, squared away person. The bed was made with the same white linens as his own, save for a fleeced blanket folded at the bottom of the bed. There was the same night stands and dresser that he had in his room, except a much bigger, and more modern TV.
Tommy removed a bunch more candles from the bag, lit them and dotted them around the room.
âI would have thought a firefighter would recognise a fire hazard when he saw one.â Buck teased as he watched Tommy the candles.
âI wonât tell if you wonât.â He said back with that smirk that Buck was beginning to find quite pleasant.
âYouâve put me in a really good blackmailing position, you know?â Buck replied.
âIs that so?â Tommy said with a casual smoothness to his voice that Buck didnât know what to make of. He sounded flirtatious whichâno, he wasnât flirting, right? Thatâhe wasnât against being flirted with. He liked flirting and he couldnât deny that it always felt nice. Heâd had guys flirt with him before and it wasnât as if he were ever offended by itâhe had a healthy confidence in his looks and was never short of flirtatious attention when he was on the job and in his turnouts, from any gender. He appreciated it and saw it as a compliment when men flirted with him, but he was never really in to it.
But with Tommy.. Buck was sort of in awe of himâhe was just so effortlessly cool. He made Buck feel like the cool kids made him feel when he was at schoolâwanting to do something stupid to impress him. That would explain the feeling in deep in his stomach that had been growing since theyâd been hanging outâhe was just impressed by the man.
âWhat is it you want in return for your silence? I donât have a lot of money, but I do make a mean chilli. Maybe I can bride you with food.â
Buck couldnât help but smile. âI donât think even you could do that in a blackout.â
Tommy laughed. âWell, obviously not right now. I was thinking maybe in a day or 2 when the storms gone and obviously when we have power back. Unless youâre going back to L.A soon?â
He looked at Buck in a way that Buck thought might be hopeful.
âUh.. I donât actually know when Iâm going back to L.A. We were supposed to stay for another few days but.. my parents..â He sighed.
âNot great?â Tommy asked. He took the backpack to the sofa underneath the curtained window and pulled out a beer each and sat down, handing a bottle to Buck.
âThanks. Uh, not really. They.. I thought.. they promised me they had changed; that they wanted to change. But theyâre just the same people who will always be disappointed in me.â He drank down a few gulps of beer and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
âWhat made them disappointed?â
âThis time? That I went back to work after the lightning strike. Apparently an act of God was just more proof of how dangerous my job is and that it itâs stupid to risk my life everyday. The funny thing is they lavish Chimney with praise for doing the exact same job because heâs doing it to provide for their daughter and granddaughterâI donât have a partner or kid so Iâm just being the same old reckless Evan.â He rolled his eyes.
Buck instinctively went to apologise for rambling but quickly realised it actually felt good to get it out.
âThat sounds really tough.â
âYou have no idea. Itâs ironicâthey were never around for me or Maddie growing up; never there to guide us or help us make the right choices in life, and then they have the nerve to criticise the choices we did make. I-I thought that after what happened a few years ago that things would actually change. Guess I was wrong again.â
âWhat happened a few years ago, if you donât mind me asking?â
Buck sat back on the sofa and turned a little to face Tommy. âI found out I had an older brother, Daniel. He had Leukaemia. None of the family were a match for him and so..â he gestured to himself â..so they made one. Except, the cells didnât take and, uh.. he died.â
âGod, Evan Iâm so sorry.â Tommy said âthat must have been.. I donât even know.â
âYeah. After that my parents packed up and moved us away; made Maddie swear to keep Daniel a secret. She was 9 years old, Tommy. What kind of parents force a nine year old to keep that kind of secret? The only reason I found out was because my parents had brought my sister her baby box when she was pregnant with my nieceâunsurprisingly they never made one for meâand I found a picture of Daniel in there. Maddie couldnât keep the secret any more and told me about him.â
He wiped away the tear that had escaped his eye without permission. âAlthough it finally made me understand why my parents had been distant with me my whole lifeâI was the living, breathing reminder of the death of the son they actually wanted.â He sniffed and drank some more beer.
Tommyâs hand, which was rested on the back of the sofa, moved to the back of Bucks neck. It was a gentle act of comfort, one that Buck wasnât expecting. He felt a warmth spread around his body at the touch. He looked at Tommy who was looking back at him with a sad expression. His eyes really were quite beautiful.
Buck looked back down at his beer bottle as Tommy returned his hand to the back of the sofa.
âSeems shitty parents are another thing we have in common, kid.â Tommy said.
âWhat were yours like?â
âYou know how people say that someone might be the father they never had? Well Gerrard was like the father I already had. Actually, Gerrard was a walk in the park compared to Pops.â
âYeah?
Tommy nodded. âThomas Kinard Senior had a very.. traditional idea of what it meant to be a man. One that he wasnât afraid to beat into me. And that was before he found it I was gay. I think he truly thought it could beat the homosexuality out of me.â He laughed but it didnât meet his eyes.
âIâm sorry, Tommy. God now I feel bad for complaining about my parents knowing you were beaten.â
Tommys hand went straight back to Bucks neck and he turned his body towards him more. âNo, Evanâyou have every right to feel how you feel about your parents. Your parents hurt you and thatâs valid.â
Buck nodded, deciding not to argue. âWhat about your mom?â
âMom was.. troubled. Part of me doesnât blame her for staying with himâhe beat her more than he beat me, but.. a part of me will always wonder how she could watch her husband beat her son and not step in, you know?â
âMy sister was in an abusive marriage. She told me once that when youâre in it that you canât believe that itâs happening. Maybe thatâs why your mom stayed?â Buck offered. He wanted to offer more to comfort Tommy but he didnât know what else to give him.
âI mean that makes sense. Iâll never know through.â He said and Buck looked at him confused. âShe died about a year after my dad.â
Without thinking about it Buck reached out and put his hand on Tommyâs that was holding his beer. A fleeting look of surprise came over Tommyâs face before it softened and he placed his other hand over the top of Bucks.
âI donât even know what to say other than Iâm sorry.â
âYou donât have to say anything, but I appreciate it, Evan.â
Heâd barely known Tommy a couple of hours yet his heart hurt for him. He couldnât help imagine him as a young kid on the receiving end of bruises instead of love.
He felt Tommys thumb brush along his hand and suddenly he became viscerally aware of his own pulse. Did it always throb this hard in his ears? Was it always this fast? And his lungsâwhy was he having to concentrate on breathing? Surely thatâs supposed to be an automatic bodily function.
A strong gust of wind rattled the old windows surprising them both. They separated their hands and Buck felt a surprising pang of disappointment.
âTh-that the bathroom?â He pointed to the door on the other side of the bed.
âUh, Yeah.â
Buck put his bottle down on the small coffee table in front of them and picked up one the candles to light his way. He locked the door behind him and leant against door.
This couldnât be happening. Well, it couldâit was a totally normal thing, but it had never happened to Buck before. Sure heâd checked out a hot guys ass here or there but this? Tommy? This felt like the beginnings of an actual crush and not just admiring someoneâs attractive features. The ease with which he could talk about some of the worst things that heâd been through with him, the comfort heâd felt with Tommys hand in his skin, and the feeling of something being missing when Tommys hand left his were not things heâd expected.
After peeing and washing his hands he leant against the sink and looked at himself in the mirror. Heâd half expected to see a change to his own reflection and was somehow both disappointed and relieved to see the same old face staring back at him.
He took a deep breath and opened the bathroom door to see Tommy lighting the fire, and the sound of soft music playing from Tommys phone on the coffee table.
âThat Sinatra?â He asked.
âYeah. I felt like putting on some music and heâs the only artist I have on my phone, currently.â
âYou do know you can download more?â Buck said with soft sarcasm.
âYes, Einstein. I just.. havenât yet.â Tommy said back.
âWhy Sinatra? You donât strike me as a fanâ
âNo? What do I strike you as a fan of?â
âDad rock.â Buck replied and that caused Tommy to bark out a laugh.
âHey, there is nothing wrong with a little soft rock, thank you. But Sinatra reminds me of my aunt. When I was a kid she used to take me to this little community hall with her friends where they would dance. Fell a little in love with Sinatra, Dean Martin and that kinda stuff.â
Buck actually found that unbelievably endearing. âSo youâre a dancer, huh?â
âIâm not an expert by any means but I know my way around a ballroom.â
âThatâs more than I can do. Last time I dancedânot including jumping around like an idiot in a clubâwas senior prom. And that only involved swaying.â
âI could teach you.â Tommy offered.
âYeah? Would that be before or after your famous Chilli?â Buck asked.
âNo time like the present.â Tommy suggested to Bucks surprise.
âReally?â
âWeâre in a blackout with nothing else to do so why not?â
âO-okay.â He agreed. And suddenly he could feel his pulse again. Tommy came over and stood in front of him.
âAt the risk of sounding disgustingly heteronormative, youâre going to be the woman in this scenario, okay?â He said and Buck simply nodded.
âOkay, so youâre going to put one hand here -â he took Bucks left hand and placed it on his waist. â-and the other Iâll hold here.â He held Bucks right hand in the air while his other went around bucks shoulder to his back. He looked down at the space in between them at their feet. âJust mirror what Iâm doing with my feet.â
He began swaying gently and moving his feet in slow sequence with the rhythm of the music. Buck kept his head down watching Tommys feet trying to mirror his movements. Occasionally he would move his feet out of sync with Tommys, and each time a wave of embarrassment flushed through him.
âYouâre doing good.â Tommy said and a burst of excitement exploded in his stomach at hearing the praise. Slowly Buck committed the steps to memory and looked up with pride at Tommy who was smiling softly at him.
âI gotta say youâre picking it up quicker than I did.â He confessed.
âYeah?â
âI mean in my defence I was eight.â He said and Buck couldnât help but laugh.
âWell youâre a good teacher. Maybe you missed your calling.â
âYou think?â Tommy
âIâm sure there would be plenty of people who would pay to have you throw them around a ballroom.â
âHuh.â Tommy said. âLike this?â He moved his hand down to the small of Bucks back and quickly bent him down into a dip before bringing him back up again; their chests coming together.
âHoly shit!â Buck looked at Tommy entirely mesmerised. His stomach hadnât got a clue what was happening. Neither did his brain. âThat was.. wow.â
Tommy laughed at Bucks reaction.
âImpressive, no?â He teased.
âUh.. ye-yeah.â
âHow about this?â Without giving him time to think he lifted up the arm that had the hand holding Bucks and swung it around with just enough force behind it to spin him around before catching him perfectly in the same position as before. Bucks mouth opened in shock but no words came out.
He was utterly mesmerised.
Tommy just softly laughed. âOkay, no more surprise moves for now.â He said and continued their previous steps. Buck was moving his feet without even thinking about it. He had no idea if he was moving his feet correctlyâhe was far too distracted by Tommy looking at him.
âI have to say I wasnât expecting the day to end like this when I got on a plane this morning.â
âYou mean you didnât foresee getting a dancing lesson from a-what was it you called me? Ah, yesâa hot firefighter.â Tommyâs lips slid into another smirk. Buck dipped his head bashfully and looked back up at him, shaking his head at his own embarrassment.
âYouâre adorable.â Tommy said and Buck literally felt his heart skip a full beat.
âYouâre loving this arenât you?â Buck asked trying and failing to suppress an embarrassed smile.
âLittle bit.â Tommy smiled back. Buck sighed and let his forehead fall onto Tommys shoulder. The hand that was on his back slid upwards and the next thing he felt was Tommys fingers in the hair at the nape of his neck. He shivered and blew out a breath; failing miserably at hiding how shaky it came out. He lifted his head back up at met Tommys gaze.
His eyes were glued to Tommyâs, until they quickly darted to his lips. Buck was helpless as to stop himself from doing the same thing.
And then..
And then Tommys lips were on his.
It was so unbelievably soft and gentle; a complete contrast to his hulking physique. Neither of their lips were moving but it didnât stop Bucks entire brain framework from short circuiting.
Tommy slowly pulled away, opening his eyes to see Buck staring at him heavy lidded and his mouth open.
âWas that okay?â He asked, his voice barely above a whisper. Buck willed his vocal cords to answer but they couldnât. He was just so overwhelmed with far too many feelings that any human should reasonably have to deal with in a given moment. He responded in the only way that he was capable of.
And kissed Tommy back.
The kiss was more desperate than the one Tommy had given him and he pushed his lips into Tommyâs deeply. Tommy hummed in surprise but immediately pushed back into the kiss. He held on to the side of Bucks neck; his thumb on the hinge of his jaw as his other hand held him by the waist to his own body.
Almost immediately Buck opened his mouth to allow Tommy access and the first brush of Tommys tongue against his bottom lip sent an electric current through his entire body. His hands, that were gripping on to Tommys shirt tightly, slid up to his neck, holding him tightly in place. Heâd pull him closer into his mouth if he could.
His mouth was warm and wet and tasting of beer and Buck couldnât get enough. He was frantically trying to breath through his nose, not wanting to part his lips from Tommys even for a second to breath.
It was ridiculous. Utterly, utterly ridiculous. Never in his life had he ever thought about kissing another man and yet here he was doing exactly that and it felt-
Right.
His lips slotting between Tommyâs like the missing piece of the jigsaw, that was his whole self, being slotted into place. His whole life heâd felt like there was a puzzle to complete but it came without instructions or a finished image to give him a clue as to how to complete it. Heâd gone to so many places; done so many things in an attempt to figure it out.. Yet here it wasâthe missing piece of the puzzle and it came in the form of a beautiful man named Tommy Kinard.
Buck hadnât particularly articulated all of this to himselfâthat would come laterâbut all he knew; all he felt was wanting. He wanted Tommy. In any way that he would allow Buck to have him.
In an act of instinct that his brain wasnât involved in he pressed his hips forward into Tommyâs. They both moaned at the touch and Buck went from half hard to fully engorged at the feel of Tommyâs erection against his. Tommyâgrabbing his ass with one hand; the other on Bucks faceâdeepened the kiss.
Buck could barely breathe from the overwhelm of heat flowing into every inch of his body. His nerves were on edge with thrill and anticipation as they ground their hips together.
Tommyâs lips moved along Bucks jaw, down his neck and he sucked delicately at his collarbone. Bucks head tilted to the side and he breathed loudly outwards.
âShitâŠTommy..â
Tommy hummed at the sound of Bucks exclamation and grabbed his ass harder, pushing his groin into Buck. Buck needed to taste him again and dipped his head, catching Tommyâs lips with his own. God, Tommys lips were perfect! They moved wondrously, with the perfect amount of pressure. His tongue was deft and purposeful in its movements and tasted like heaven.
He almost cried when Tommy gently pulled away. He held bucks face in his hands and rested their foreheads together.
âEvan..â he said breathy âwe should st-â
âNo.â Buck interrupted. He pulled his head back to look at Tommy. âI donât want to. I.. I want you.â Tommy swallowed, looked down at Bucks lips then back up to his eyes.
âAre you sure?â He whispered.
And once again Buck answered without words. This time however, having more confidence, he took his time. He slowly ran his hand along Tommys jaw, gripping him lightly with a thumb against the hinge and pressed his lips into Tommyâs.
A shiver went through him as the palms of Tommys hands pressed against his shoulder blades, holding him tightly to his chest. Being held by someone as big as Tommy was illuminatingly wonderful. For the first time in a long time Buck felt safe.
Buck was radiating enough heat that he feared he might actually melt into a puddle. He unzipped the hoodie he was wearing and let it fall to the floor before peeling Tommys open shirt over his shoulders and dropping it to the floor too. He immediately pulled at the hem of his undershirt and Tommy raised his arms allowing Buck to remove it. Tommy pressed another kiss onto Bucks lips then pulled off his T-shirt.
Tommy went straight for Bucks neck again and goosebumps exploded all over his skin. His hands pressed against Tommyâs chestâhis finger tips caressing the smattering of hair along Tommys skin. This was something overwhelmingly new and unexpectedly exciting for Buck. Lack of breasts was one thing, but the feeling of chest hair under his fingers was surprisingly turning him on.
They migrated towards the bed with Buck getting on first and pulling Tommy on top of him without even breaking the kiss. And holy shit he never knew that having the weight of someone near enough the same weight as himâperhaps a little heavierâwould feel so good!
Both of their hands were all over every inch of skin they could get too. Caressing and stroking and rubbing and kissingâno inch of bare skin was left untouched.
Buck trailed wet open-mouthed kiss along Tommyâs throat; his tongue licking into every one of them. Tommy was breathing heavily into it and Buck felt awash with pride and self satisfaction. He had game when it came to womenâhe knew what buttons to press to turn them on, but there was something extra exhilarating about turning on this man on top of him.
And he was a man. Buck was quickly beginning to realise that what was turning him on the most was Tommyâs masculinity. His weight, his breadth, his body hair, even the stubble on his chin that was burning into Bucks skin was addicting. And his large hands gripping onto his shoulders and chest and waist and oh god his neck!
Tommys hand slowly caressed down his torso and lower stomach and when it reached his waistband Buck sucked in an anticipatory breath. Tommys fingers gripped the elastic. He lifted his head to meet Bucks eyes.
âIs it okay to take these off?â His eyes were blown and his lips kiss-swollen and Buck thought it was the hottest heâd ever seen anybody ever look.
âY-yes.â His voice came out throaty and strained. Tommy smiled and kissed him again before lifting himself off of Buck. He moved down the bed and Buck lifted up his hips to allow Tommy to slowly pull them down and off, throwing them somewhere across the room.
His eyes roamed over the large bulge in Bucks underwear before they moved back up to Bucks eyes. For the first time since this started he felt an element of self-consciousness. Tommy seemed to sense this and made his way back up towards Bucks face and kissed him gently. Bucks self-consciousness immediately melted away.
âDo you want me to take mine off?â Tommy whispered.
âDefinitely.â Buck replied with a heavy breath. Within seconds Tommyâs jeans were thrown to the floor. He laid back down on his side, pulling Buck in to face him. They kissed deeply as their legs tangled together and hands continued exploring each other.
Buck was lightheaded. His brain was having trouble reconciling the array of physical sensations and feelings he was experiencing all at once. Especially the feeling of Tommyâs underwear covered cock pushing against his own. He couldnât help the whine that escaped his mouth as Tommy jerked his hips towards his; could feel himself leaking at the touch as they rutted against each other.
âGod, Evan.â Tommy moaned into Bucks mouth and oh god that was unbelievably hot! His finger tips slid into the back of Bucks underwear, grasping at his ass and pulling him even closer. Buck grunted in response.
Tommyâs lips grazed Buckâs ear as he whispered into it.
âWhat do you want, baby?â And Jesus that pet name almost broke him in two.
âTo-touch me.â He couldnât hide the pleading in tone. Tommy groaned at Bucks reply, kissing him again. His hands gently held Bucks face as he lifted himself back on top of him but not putting down his whole weight. Buck bucked his hips up in search for the friction heâd become addicted to.
âI got you, baby.â
There it was again: Baby. Heâd been called pet names before but fuck this felt different. The juxtaposition between Tommys sheer size and masculinity and the softness of his words was wondrous.
Tommy continued kissing Buck beautifully whilst letting his hands slowly travel down Bucks body and his hand dipped inside the fabric of his boxers.
The moment Buck felt Tommyâs warm hand gently caress his throbbing length he couldnât hold in his response. âFuck!â He felt Tommy smile against his lips. His thumb lightly caressed the slit collecting Bucks pre-come and Buckâs body vibrated at the feel. Tommy lifted his face up from Bucks a few inches to watch him as he slid his hand back down Bucks cock, then slowly up again; squeezing just the right amount to drive Buck almost to insanity.
Buck began panting and grasping onto any part of Tommy he could reach in a fruitless attempt to steady himself. Tommy kept eye contact with him while he worked his cock faster and Buck wasnât sure which was turning him on more.
Eventually Buck involuntarily scrunched his eyes shut as his head threw itself back onto the pillow. âOh.. g-god..fu-Tommy, I.. itâs.. fuck!â He was babbling; unable to form a coherent sentence. Every synapse, every vein, every inch of his skin was on fire.
âYouâre doing so good, baby.â Tommy said throaty and low.
âFuck!â His hips bucked up into Tommys hand faster, chasing the edge of the cliff he was desperate to fall over.
On the next up stroke Tommys hand left Buck and for a moment he felt an overwhelming disappointment at the lack of touch. He lifted his head up to see why Tommy had stopped only to see him setting free his own cock. Buck sharply inhaled at the sight of his flushed and swollen dick, and desperately wanted to wrap his fingers around it. Before he got the chance however Tommy took him by surprise by taking them both in his hand, moaning loudly at the first slide of his hand.
Buck was certain that his heart was mere seconds from giving out as Tommys quickly caught up to the rhythm he had going before.
âHoly shit!â Buck cried out and yanked Tommys head down to kiss him. This one was unbelievably filthy; Buck having absolutely no composure left. âOh god..â he pulled apart trying desperately to breathe.
âEvan..â Tommy moaned and the second it hit Bucks ears he was done for.
âShit! Shit..shit.. ah.. fuck!â Sparks behind his eyelids exploded into a kaleidoscope of colour and every muscle in his body tensed as he came harder than he had ever done. In the middle of it shooting all over his chest, he felt Tommyâs body shaking and tensing before he shoved his lips hard into Buckâs, kissing him as he realised his own load.
âFuck, Evan!â He moaned into Bucks mouth as their collective orgasms slowly petered out. He shoved his face into the crook of Bucks neck as they both tried to catch their breath.
Eventually their breathing slowed and Tommy lifted his head back to look at him. Bucks face was a mixture of blissed out and mesmerised.
âAre you okay?â Tommy asked softly. He raised his hand and gently rearranged an errant curl that had fallen onto Bucks forehead. It was such a simple act of care but after the overwhelming feelings, both physical and emotional, it was enough to push Buck over the edge and his eyes quickly welled up with a tear escaping and running down his temple towards the pillow.
Tommys face morphed into concern. âHey, whatâs wrong? Was that too much?â He lifted himself from Buck and laid on his side, resting on his elbow, looking down at Buck.
âN-no..â Buck replied, his voice wrecked âitâs not.. I..â His breath hitched as he tried to keep more emotion at bay âthat was.. new. And.. and a lot. I-I just..â He blew out a breath to try to calm himself. âItâs just a little over-overwhelming, thatâs all.â Tommy continued looking at him with concern.
Bucks lifted a still shaking hand to Tommyâs face to reassure him. âIâm okay.â Tommy put his hand on top of his and Buck leaned up and placed a long and delicate kiss to his lips. He gently leant back, with Tommys mouth following him. Their lips moved slowly and softly; no heat or tongue involvedâjust two people relishing the soft moment.
âWe should clean up.â Tommy said after a few minutes. Buck shifted to get up and Tommy put a hand on his shoulder to stop him. âNoâwait here.â He walked over to the bathroom and wetted a towel and returned, sitting on the edge of the bed.
âIs it okay if I wipe you down?â He asked. Buck simply nodded having lost the ability to speak at the care that Tommy was showing him. Heâd never been with anybody who so consistently checked in with him when he was with somebody long term, let alone a someone heâd only spent a few hours with.
Tommy finished cleaning Buck then pulled his boxers back up, fondly tapping his hip as a little flourish at the end of the job. He threw the towel back into the bathroom and laid back down on the bed, lifting his arm up. âCâmere.â He said and Buck didnât hesitate to slide his body over and rested his head on Tommyâs chest.
It was different being the one to cuddle into someoneâs chestâusually he was the one with his arm around his partner. But as new as it was, it felt good; calming. He couldnât help but swirl circles into Tommys chest hair either his finger; the novelty of sleeping with someone that had it had not left him yet.
Tommys hand was lightly running through Bucks curls and he couldnât help but let his eyes flutter closed at the feel. He sighed contentedly and Tommy placed a kiss onto the top of his head. He couldnât help but smile into Tommys skin as his consciousness slowly slipped away.
*
Buck sighed heavily as he woke up. He kept his eyes closed as his brain came back online. He was warm and cosy wrapped up in the thick blanket. Slowly his eyes blinked open and at seeing the room he was in, the memories of the previous night came flooding back.
But Tommy wasnât there. The room was empty. Buck laid back staring at the ceiling remembering what happened between them. A flush came over him as he remembered the feeling of Tommys lips on his; his hands all over his body, and his voice! That molasses-infused voice praising him was otherworldly.
What did all of this mean for him? He was never afraid of new sexual experiencesâhell he relished themâand he wasnât ashamed of the fact that this one involved a man. More than anything it was surprising. He knew that plenty of people discover things about their sexuality later in life, but could you really go 33 years without a single clue?
He tried searching through his memories to find some kind of clue that maybe there was something that stood out. There was that one time in Texas with a firefighter named TK; heâd thought Buck was asking him out, and Buck was quick to deny that that was what he was doing, but.. Itâs no secret that he had a thing for competency, and he worked side by side with TK; saw just how good he was at his job. Maybe he was attracted to him?
Before he had a chance to think more, the door opened and Tommy walked in holding 2 cups of coffee; with a brown paper bag held in his teeth.
Bucks stomach swooped and flipped at seeing him. He walked over to Buck reaching out of the cups for him to take, before removing the bag from his mouth.
âYou hungry?â He said, placing his own coffee on the nightstand and sat on the edge of the bed by Bucks hips.
âYou-you brought me breakfast?â Buck asked in surprise. Tommy smiled and Buck felt his heart rate increase.
âWhat kind of gentleman would I be if I didnât?â Tommy said it so plainly; so as a matter of fact as though not doing it wasnât even an option.
âTh-thanks.â
Tommy tentatively leaned down and pressed his lips to Bucks. Just a quick chaste kiss, but one that Buck pressed into. Tommy smiled again as he released Bucks lips and sat back up. Buck took a sip of the coffee and hummed pleasantly.
âI didnât know how you take it, so I took a guess.â
âGood guess.â Buck told him happily.
âI figured your coffee would resemble you: strong bodied and super sweet.â Buck couldnât hide the blush that spread across his cheeks and smiled back at him.
âI take it the snow has let up?â He asked trying to change the subject away from Tommy trying to actually kill him with compliments.
âYeah, a little. Enough that I could get my truck out to get food. Still no power though. But the local radio said half the towns power is out.â
âShit, really? I should probably check on Maddie.â
Tommy pulled his phone from his pocket and held it out to him. âHere. If you wanna call her.â
âOh, I donât actually know her number.â Buck admitted. Tommy raised an eyebrow.
âYouâre a first responderâyou know how important it is to remember energy contact details.â
âSays the guy who created a fire hazard last night?â Buck teased back. Tommy opened his mouth to respond by quickly closed it. âExactly.â Buck smiled.
âWell, I have Howieâs number anyway if you want to call him. You said he was here, right?â
âUh, yeah. Thanks.â He took the phone and pulled up Chimâs number.
âTommy? Long time no-â
âUh, actually itâs Buck.â
âBuck? What.. why do you have Tommyâs phone?â
âBecause Iâm with him.â Buck informed him.
âYouâre with-wait, wait, waitâdid you go back home?!â
âNo, uh, heâs here in Hershey.â
âTommyâs here in Hershey?â Chim repeated.
âYes,â
âWhy the hell is Tommy in Hershey?â
âItâs doesnât matter, Chim. Look, I just wanted to check in on you, my sister and Jee with the blackout.â
âWeâre fine. Well, aside from your sister freaking out about not being able to contact you. Sheâs really having a hard time, Buck.â
Buck sighed and ran a hand through his hair. âI know and Iâm sorry I scared herâI just needed to get away from them.â
âHey, I get itâIâve witnessed enough of Philip and Margaretâs antics, but you really should have talked to her.â
âI couldnât, Chim.â His began to raise his voice. âShe was the one who convinced me to come. And I know she didnât know what theyâd be like, and itâs not her fault, and i know itâs irrational, okay, but-but i needed to get away from her, too, to cool off.â
Tommy put his hand on Bucks leg and gave him a gentle reassuring squeeze. Immediately Buck anger began to dissipate as he looked at Tommyâs soft, reassuring expression.
He kept eye contact with Tommy as he spoke into the phone. âChim, I have to go. Tell Maddie Iâll be back later and weâll talk, okay?â
âOkay, but-â
Buck ended the call, threw the phone onto the nightstand and leaned forward, grabbing Tommy at the back of the neck to pull him in for a searing kiss.
Tommy willingly leant into it and held onto Bucks face; his thumb gently grazing his cheek. The kiss quickly slowed down into a soft and deep one. Buck wasâgod how did he not know it could feel like this? Tommys lips and tongue were perfect. He could do this forever.
But that begged the question: what now? Tommy was here in Hershey to sell the motelâwho knows how long that will take. And when heâs back in L.A would he want to see Buck again? Buck couldnât pretend for a moment even to himself that he didnât want to see Tommy again. Heâd some managed to slide himself into the space between Bucks organs and it filled him with warmth and excitement.
He gently released the kiss and rested his forehead against Tommyâs. They both just breathed each other in with closed eyes.
âCan I ask you something?â Buck asked quietly.
âAnything.â Tommy replied piling back to look at him. That smile was killing Buck from the inside out.
âWhat happens now? I-I mean.. obviously I have to go back to L.A in a few days and you.. youâre here and-and I donât.. I donât want to not see you.â He looked down, embarrassed at the confession. Tommy tilted his chin back up with two fingers.
âI donât know what happens next. I donât know how long itâs going to take to sell this place. I donât expect this; expect you. But I donât want to not see you either.â
Bucks felt every atom in his body shift and vibrate and he could stop the grin.
***
He was quiet on the journey to the airport, during check in, waiting to board and the first half of the flight. Eventually Maddie approached the subject.
âYou okay?â
âDo you believe in love at first sight?â He asked.
âUm, no. But, I do believe that some people come into your life that youâre feel an immediate connection with.â She looked at Chimney who was sat across the aisle in the middle row playing with Jee-Yun. âWait, have you met someone.â
âTommy.â He said.
âTommy the-wow!â
âWhat, wow?â Buck questioned looking at her.
âNo, not wow. I mean like.. wow.. I didnât think thatâs where your interest would lie.â
âI didnât either.â He said. âI love womenâIâve always loved women.â
âHow long have you been leaning in the other direction?â She asked.
âI havenât; not specifically. I mean, sure Iâll check out a hot guys ass, but thatâs normal.â He argued.
âItâs not abnormal.â
âBut Tommy.. I dunno, heâs so confident, heâs interesting; he has a cleft..â A feeling of disappointment came over him that he didnât kiss Tommyâs cleft when he had the chance.
âAnd you think youâre in love with him?â she asked.
âI.. I donât know. Ive never.. Iâve never felt like this, Maddie. Itâs like.. the way he looks at me I feel like-calm, you know? Being with him made me feel like all the bad shit that has ever happened to me didnât matter. I have this feeling in my stomach like heâs been carved into it. I know, I know I sound like an idiot..â he sat back in his seat, sighing.
He did sound like an idiotâheâd known the man a few daysâhow the hell could he be in love with him?! If it even is love.. maybe itâs just infatuation.
âBuck, youâve been through a lot on your lifeâmore than most. And all I want for youâall Iâve ever wanted for you is to be happy. Does Tommy make you happy?â
âI mean.. yeah. But, we barely know each other. What if he comes back to L.Aâif he ever comes backâand itâs not what I want it to be?â
âI canât tell you if itâll work out, and maybe it wonât. But maybe it will. Maybe itâll be the best decision you ever make. After Doug I was terrified of taking a chance with Chim. But i knew there was something between us and I took that chance and now weâre married, with a beautiful daughter and I couldnât imagine my life with anybody else.â
âIâm glad youâre happy, Maddie. Iâve always wanted that for you too, you know.â
âI know. Look, the question you have to ask yourself is: Is Tommy worth the risk?â
Buck relaxed into his seat and stared out of the plane window at the clouds below him, contemplating Maddies question.
*
After collecting his Jeep from Maddies house he made his way through town to his apartment. He pulled his bag out of the trunk and heavily made his way into the building, thinking about this last conversation with Tommy.
Buck walked into the motel foyer solemnly. This was the last time for a potentially long while that he would be able to see Tommy. Theyâd only met 3 days ago and yet heâd somehow rooted himself inside Bucks consciousness.
âHey you.â Tommy greeted walking out from the back room.
âHey.â He said trying to force a smile.
âYou heading home?â Tommy asked coming closer and sliding hands around Bucks waist. Buck naturally let his arms rest around Tommys shoulders.
Buck nodded. âTheyâre in car waiting for me.â
âOh, well donât let me keep you.â He moved to release Buck who held on tighter.
âWhat if I wanted you to keep me?â There was a small smirk to his mouth. Tommy gripped him tighter and pressed a chaste kiss to his lips.
âHmm, now that is tempting..â
Buck took him in another kiss; this one deeper and open mouthed. As their lips and tongues met Bucks mind went blank to everythingâTommy being all he could focus on. He gripped Tommys body tighter and shoved his head into the crook of his neck. Tommy hand came up to stroke the hair on the back of his head.
âI-I canât believe I have to leave you.â He mumbled into Tommys neck.
âI hate it, too, baby.â He replied and Bucks insides turned to goo again at the pet name. He would stand like this forever if he could but the car horn that blasted from outside. They pulled apart a few inches and Tommy lightly held Bucks face as he kissed him in the softest way; one Buck had never been in the receiving end before. He rested his head against Bucks.
âWeâll see each other again soon, I promise.â He whispered.
âHow do you know that?â
âBecause how could anybody let someone like you go?â
Buck had to use everything inside of him to not burst into tears at hearing those words. He thrust himself forwards subjecting Tommy to a crushing hug.
âOomphâ Tommy chuckled.
After a few more hugs and not nearly enough kissing, Buck reluctantly left Tommy.
He left the elevator and walked along the corridor towards his apartment. As he turned the corner he stopped dead in his tracks. His bag fell to the ground from his hands, his throat dried up, his heart throbbed in his chest and tears threatened to escape his eyes.
Leaning against his door, with those blue eyes, and that smile that created those beautiful lines around his face, was Tommy.
âHey, sweetheart.â he simply said. The tears came from Buck as he hurtled forward and crashed his lips into Tommyâs. Somehow having Tommy here now made him feel more at home.
âWhat are you.. how did you.. I canât believe.â Buck has so many questions and tries to ask them in between kisses.
âPerks of being a pilot.â He answered. Buck pulled his head back and looked at him.
âYou-you flew all the way here?â
âIt was the quickest way to get to you.â And oh my god if he wasnât in love with Tommy already, he would be soon if he kept saying things like that.
âWhat about the motel?â
âWell..â Tommy said in between kissed to Bucks temple and cheek. âI donât actually have to keep it open while looking for a buyer. Plus, I fucking hate running a motel.â
Buck couldnât help but laugh.
âSo, are you going to invite me in, or..?â He asked running his hands along Bucks shoulders.
âOh.â Buck said, a little embarrassed heâd forgotten they were still standing in the corridor. âOf course.â He picked up his bag and unlocked the door letting Tommy in first. Tommy walked through the kitchen looking around at his surroundings as Buck closed and locked the door.
He stood for a moment just looking at Tommy. He still didnât know if what he was feeling was love, but wherever it was, he was going to welcome it.
Risk it.
Tommy turned around to look at Buck the other side of the kitchen.
âCâmere.â

sneak peek: buddie hallmark movie fic!
Even three years in, Buck still isnât quite used to winter in Los Angeles.
Itâs November fifteenth, and heâs wearing a t-shirt. Heâs even a little bit sweaty. Thatâs gotta be against the laws of the universe.
The mall has already put up a giant Christmas tree, spectacular enough that Tommy has to loop his arm through Buckâs elbow to pull him away from gawking at it. Buck wonders how long it takes to decorate the thing.
âYou know, I used to work on a Christmas tree farm,â Buck says as they continue through the mall, and Tommy laughs.
âFor real? An actual, honest-to-God Christmas tree farm?â
âWell, yeah. They gotta come from somewhere,â Buck shrugs. âWould you, uh.â He clears his throat. âWould you want to see it?â
Tommyâs eyebrows crease. âSee what?â
âThe farm. Where I worked.â
âUhâŠâ
âMaddie invited me home for Christmas,â Buck says. âIâm gonna go either way, I have to meet Jee-Yun, but I⊠I hoped you would come with me?â
Tommy is silent for a few seconds, mouth downturned, and Buck can faintly hear Santa Tell Me playing from a tinny set of speakers somewhere among the din of the mall.
âItâit snows there!â He pleads, âCome on, real white Christmas. We can have some spiked cider by the fireplaceâŠâ Buck squeezes Tommyâs arm, pulling him closer and kissing his cheek lightly, then his ear. âI know you can get the time off⊠And youâd have an excuse to miss your dadâs stupid Christmas party with all the businessmenâŠâ
â...Alright,â Tommy caves.
âYes!â Buck stops them right in the middle of the walkway, kisses Tommy, and pulls back with a smile splitting his face in half. âThank you!â
Tommy chuckles indulgently and pulls him back in for a deeper kiss. Theyâre definitely blocking some poor shoppers, but Buck canât be bothered to care.
Buck doesnât think that anyone knows this about himânot even Maddieâbut heâs always loved Christmas. Back when he was younger, he wanted to live on the Grant-Nash Tree Farm, spent as much time there as he could get away with and waited anxiously for December when heâd get to stand in a lot with Bobby and drink hot chocolate together. The Buckleys hardly celebrated ChristmasâBuck and Maddie exchanged presents, and their parents hung a wreath on the door and lit up an artificial tree in the window where neighbors could see, but they never really did the whole Christmas morning thing, so he never got much of an opportunity to really do all of the traditions.
He still hasnât really done the traditions like most people, but he loves the stupid corny music. He loves the ugly sweaters, and Santa hats, and light shows, and the smell of pine needles and the glitter everywhere and, yes, even the freezing Pennsylvania snow. He loves leaving on the Hallmark channel 24/7 in December, and laughing at the bad acting, and admiring the decorations, and crying a little bit whenever some girl named Holly or Noel or Mary finds love.
And finally, finally, he thinks, maybe he can have a nice Christmas. Heâll have his sister, and his new baby niece, and his boyfriend, and it wonât even matter that his parents donât give a shit about him. Heâll give Maddie back her old Jeep, and tell her how much she means to him, and shower baby Jee-Yun in toys and kisses, and maybe snuggle up with Tommy by a fire somewhere with some mulled wine and keep each other warm.
Buck isnât a dumb, troublemaking kid anymore. Heâs better now.
Evergreen, Pennsylvania wonât get the best of him.

December 2023
"You have the weirdest phobias."Â
Behind them, the Americana fountain spews cool water into the mild December night. When Eddie glances at Buck, the golden streetlight has turned his face as warm as his voice.Â
"Excuse me?"
"You're not afraid of jinxes or curses," Buck elaborates.
"Because they're not real."
"But you're afraid of Hildy. And," ignoring Eddie's absolutely justified glare, Buck nods at the sight in front of them, at the crowd of fake Christmas elves and bright-eyed children, all waiting for their turn, "you're afraid of Santa. Who's afraid of Santa?"
"I'm not afraid of Santa," Eddie protests. "I just don't get the appeal of the whole mall Santa thing. If Jee wants the newest unicorn dolphin barbie or whatever, she should tell Chim. Not some stranger in a polyester beard."
Unicorn dolphin barbie, Buck mouths. Eddie rolls his eyes and elbows him, and Buck's smile turns into a grin.Â
"It's about the magic of Christmas, Eddie," he says, like he's never turned a call from bad to worse by telling a bunch of kids that Santa isn't real. "Just because you threw up on him twice, doesn't mean Santa is your enemy now."
"I can't believe my abuela told you about that," Eddie grumbles. "I had a stomach flu. She always forgets to mention that part. It wasn't about Santa. I was sick."
"Sure," Buck nods. "Sure, Eddie. We all process our childhood trauma in our own ways, I guess."
"How would you know? I bet Dr. Copeland already forgot you exist."
Buck leans forward and away from him, doing a great job of pretending that Eddie never said anything at all. He doesn't stick his fingers in his ears, but it's a close thing.Â
"Look at her," he coos, and Eddie forgives him instantly, because that Uncle Buck pride is charming beyond words. In front of them, surrounded by all those children and fake elves, it's Jee's turn to be lifted onto Santa's lap. Unlike Eddie, she's not apprehensive at allâshe buries her little hand in Santa's itchy beard and pulls him close to whisper her wishes into his ear. "You know, this is her fifth time this year."
"Sounds like a long wish list."
"Yeah," Buck says dreamily. If it's up to him, Eddie knows, Jee will get everything she asked for and more.Â
Silence settles between them, soft like snow, and it's a while before Buck breaks it again.
"Hey, remember when we took Chris here together?"
Of course Eddie remembers. Five years, but it feels like a lifetime. Chris didn't want to come today, but he's not too cool for his Buck yet; they had lunch together earlier, before they picked up Jee, and Chris told Buck all about the new video games his friend Jenny wants for Christmas. Buck listened, intently, like he always does. Jee isn't the only kid in Buck's life who won't be disappointed come Christmas morning.Â
"Yeah."
"I never told you this," Buck says, quietly, "but the girl who came over afterâshe thought we were a couple."
"What?" When Eddie looks at him, Buck is still watching Jee, still smiling. His cheeks look pink, but that could be the Christmas lights twinkling all around them.
"She saidâshe thought Chris was our kid. She said we had a cute son."
"Huh," Eddie says, because what else is he supposed to say to that? Something blooms in his stomach, small and shy, somehow both new and comfortably familiar. "What did you say?"
"I thanked her." After a moment, Buck turns and meets Eddie's eyes, his own a dark grayish blue, shadowed by his lashes.Â
"That's it?" Eddie asks, as the thing in his stomach expands and takes over his chest as well, fluttering like sunlit leaves in a gentle morning breeze.Â
"That's it," Buck echoes.Â
December 2024
The fountain mist fades away and takes the golden lights with it, the outdoor mall bustle. Eddie isn't sitting on a bench with his best friend by his side. He's in a quiet hospital hallway, and the door in front of him has just opened.Â
âYou should probably go home at some point,â Hen says, voice calm and quietly strong, just like her hand where it alights on Eddieâs arm.
âI went home this morning,â Eddie tells her.
Hen doesnât look impressed, but she lets it go. "I have to pick Denny up from school. Maddie texted the group chat. She just picked her parents up from the airport. Theyâll probably come in tonight."
Eddie doesn't know if that's supposed to be reassuring, a promise that he doesn't have to be alone with Buck for too long, or if it's a warning. Probably the latter. She knows he doesnât mind being alone with Buck.Â
Hen leaves and Eddie takes his place by Buck's side. He looks just like he did when Eddie left him this morning, but there are flowers on the table next to him now, and get-well-soon cards, and a single drawing. It shows Uncle Buck and Jee-Yun, conveniently labeled with big round letters, standing beside a large red figure with a fluffy white beard. Next to the drawing, propped up against a vase of flowers, someone has left a single white paper snowflake, adorably crooked and slightly squished. Eddie looks up at the ceiling and blinks the tears away before they can fall.Â
Written for the @911countdowntochristmas - this was supposed to be 24 drabbles but the Buddie NDE speculation going around pre 8x08 inspired me and now itâs a 24-mini-chaptered fic instead. And definitely more hurt/comfort than fluff. Oops.

James!!
May I request some bucktommy + Alfie lore about spending the holidays on the ranch with Grandpa Bobby and (Nana? Grandma? Something else? No title?) Athena please?
Thank youuuuu đ«¶
You may certainly request some Alfie lore! My apologies for it being many days late! Athena's name is Nena btw, cause that's how Alfie incorrectly pronounced her name and it just stuck.
Bobby and Athena have everyone over for the night of Christmas Eve - a tradition they started when they moved into the Ranch. Buck and Tommy chose not to stay the night on Alfie's first Christmas because he was only 3 weeks old and would have caused mass disruption.
On his 3rd Christmas, a very freshly 2 year old Alfie goes barrelling into Athena and Bobby's bedroom at 5am and demands they get up and go unwrap presents this very second. A very disgruntled and tired Athena ushers him back to Tommy and Buck's room and gently encourages him to bug his parents until sunrise at the very least.
Bobby takes the kids for a horse ride on Christmas morning (usually just Jee, baby Han #2, and Alfie + baby sister many years later cause the others are surly teenagers and generally asleep till noon). Alfie is very excited the year he can ride a horse all on his own, and definitely gets way too ahead of himself and is almost bucked off, but he hangs in there!
Alfie really loves watching Bobby in the kitchen as he cooks on Christmas Eve. Bobby has a little step stool for him and Alfie helps him bake. He gets 90% of the flour on himself and then jumps on his closest father, covering them in a cloud of flour.
Athena has a little nativity scene set up on the mantlepiece. When he's tall enough to reach it, Alfie really enjoys rearranging the figures. His most favourite thing is to put the donkey and the sheep up by the baby Jesus and pretend they're his parents.
Very very occasionally it snows up on the ranch. Depending on the elevation, they'll drive up to the snow and have a snowball fight. Buck beans Alfie in the face with a snowball one year (by accident, he was aiming for Tommy and got distracted) so after that Alfie has a yearly free pass for one snowball to Buck's face. Buck will never not feel guilty about it

ᎄ đđđđđđ | plug!jet x reader {teaser}
ᎄwarning(s): reader calls jet âjeeâ , jet calls reader âkidâ , drugs , mentions of death/violence , minor ocs
âI donât like my money being fucked with kidâŠâ
âJee hush, Iâm a little behind on bills right now. Youâll get your last sixty next week sometime.â
New yorkâs opening year climate had your hands all clammy, wrapping up in various layers of winter clothes somehow couldnât stop the frigid whoops of air snaking their way to your body. Grip wavering visibly, trying to flip through your wallet of fresh cash and pull out a sum of money just short of sixty dollars to Jee. One thing about him is that he didnât really like the whole âiâll pay the rest laterâ excuse, his policy is you either pay it or go home with nothing. Years of being a dealer had his paranoia constantly on a high most failed to understand.
Yet he found himself remorseful towards you, the both of you knowing each other since grade school, always making your payments on time. It wasnât like you were the kind to grab and run from him anyway, an excuse this time would be tolerated by his rare patience. As soon as the paper made it into his expectant open palm, he balled it up, and replaced your empty hand with a solid pound of green in a plastic baggie.
âWe hotboxing tonight or you going home?â
âGotta go home, got work tomorrow.â
The discipline of a real job was a foreign idea to Jee, constantly running through streets for as long as he could remember. His longest ever consistent job was selling drugs. Never holding down a real home either, just constantly on the move. He says this business gets demanding like a normal job, seeing the bulge of a loaded pistol tucked into his waistband under his oversized hoodie.
âHow Brooklyn been treating you Jee?â
Moving from Pasadena just a week ago had him new to the whole environment that made up the east coast, âEverything up here so damn expensive, but Iâm coming from Pasadena, so it ainât nothing Iâm not used to. I hate the cold, but the rest of my group is up here soâŠâ
He never looked at you, staring off into the distance in the park that was gradually collecting snow. Bare hands going a mild red from the dropped temperatures, then being shoved into his hoodie pockets. Kicking an accumulating pile of snow out of sheepishness during the silence between words, you decided to say something since you wanted to talk before heading off back home.
âIâm sorry about what happened to ChicoâŠhave you been at least doing well after his funeral?â
Jee said nothing for a long moment, face going unreadable and eyebrows hunching slightly together as he was seemingly thinking. Maybe bringing up a sensitive subject like that wasnât the best social move you couldâve made, but that was your friend, and Chico happened to be his best friend as well. They were like brothers as close as they were, only to lose the man in a gunfight back when he was in Cali.
ââŠitâs been cool, you know. Things ainât been ideal but shit happens, thatâs life.â
As nonchalant about it as he wanted to be, you could sense his grief through his numb attitude. Eyebrows relaxing and his vision jolted to the ground, a moment before hearing the ding of his phone which softened the solemn energy around you two. Fishing the device out of his pocket, he checked the notification from some other buyer ready to purchase their products from him.
âAlright kid, see you around, donât forget my damn sixty. Iâll blow your head off if you do.â Jee playfully hit your arm, a gesture native to the friendly relationship you two had for years now. Smacking the back of his head and laughing before you two parted off, returning to the very different lives the both of you lived.

Taken - Zutara - Part 79
First / Previous / Next / Masterpost
Katara had been right. By the end of her first week back in the South, Northern boats appeared on the horizon. But it wasn't just women looking to learn combat bending. There were women escaping arranged marriages, men that wanted to be healers, and mothers helping their children escape the oppression and sexism of the North.
One had brought a letter from Yue, explaining that she had been finding anyone that was starting to question Agna Qel'a and it's leaderships choices, and helping them flee with directions to the South. She had been doing so in secret, ever since her wedding to Hahn.
"We're... gonna need more houses," Sokka said, as they realized that the chances of more arrivals were high.
The rebuilding effort of their village was coming along nicely.
The Wani had been loaded with materials before its departure, which had helped turn their little snow huts into little snow houses. Captain Jee hadn't been able to stay, bringing any of the Fire Nation refugees that wanted to leave back to the Fire Nation. A few had stayed, one man having found a woman that he was quite taken with, while others found the peace of the little village more appealing than the hustle of most Fire Nation cities.
And, of course, there was Rinzo and Taka. The two soldiers hovered and smiled, doing anything that she asked, save for leave her alone for five minutes. She supposed, if they already saw her as their Fire Lady, it would be good practice for when she took the position officially.
For the new benders, they decided to build an all in one school. One side for combat training, the other for healing. It would go where her healers hut had been. They were able to bend the snow into a rough thick shape of what they wanted. Sokka and a few of the more architecturally inclined would go in and smooth out their work to make it look nice.
With the Fire Nation citizens that stayed, and the Northern Tribesmen that joined them, almost the entirety of Wolf Cove had been rebuilt, in a more modern style. They had a longhouse again, next to the bending school. There was currently construction on a larger, more secure storehouse.
If Katara hadn't been there to see construction begin, she likely wouldn't recognize it.
It was at the end of the week that Aang finally arrived on Appa.
"Whoa," Aang said, as he dropped off of Appa and looked around. "This is... I know I only saw it for a minute, but it's way different!"
"With my dad and the warriors home, we need the extra space," Katara said. She shrugged, putting her hands in the sleeves of her red koala-sheep tunic. It was getting tight again. "How's Zuko?"
Immediately, Aang cringed. "He's... Fine. Juggling Azula, foreign affairs proposals, internal issues. He's got his hands full, that's for sure."
Her heart sank. "I wish I was there to help. Did he... decide what to do with Azula?"
Aang nodded. "I took her bending."
The confession was grim, and Katara felt the weight of it as heavily as Aang did. It was a terrible decision to have to make. Azula was only a few months older than Katara, and it was Ozai that really pushed Azula into what she became, but there really wasn't much else they could do. Azula needed help, but she was too dangerous to be given it without a safeguard in place.
There had been no other options.
"Come on," Katara said, redirecting the conversation. People were starting to gather around them. "My dad is in the long house. You have a plan for the peace summit?"
"I do," Aang said, though he didn't seem sure.
Deciding not to press him, especially since she'd be getting answers soon enough anyway, Katara led him into the long house. It was by far the largest building in the tribe, meant to be able to have standing room for every member, and they built it with their soon to be growing population in mind.
"Avatar Aang," her father called, from where he was going over maps of the surrounding area with Sokka.
Her mother looked up from where she was braiding cords nearby, frowning. "Aang? The boy that attacked Zuko?"
Aang sheepishly laughed. "Err... Yeah, sorry. Katara and Sokka had just told me about the war, and I kinda freaked out."
Her mother hummed.
"Whatcha got for us?" Sokka said, before they could get distracted. "Anything from Suki? Did they head back to Kyoshi yet?"
So much for not getting distracted.
"They're still in Caldera City," Aang explained, offhandedly as he reached into his robes to pull out a tightly rolled scroll. "Chief Hakoda, this is for you."
Her father frowned, taking the scroll and breaking an orange wax seal. Katara moved to her fathers side, looking over his shoulder to read, as Sokka did the same on the other side.
It was an invitation, written in a pristine script that Katara recognized as Aang's hand writing.
You are invited to the first ever Four Nations Peace Summit. This summit is meant to bridge the divide of nations, so we can all work together to find lasting peace and balance. The leaders of each nation will be discussing various topics, including but not limited to: assigning ambassadors, trade routes, goals for the coming year. This is planned to be a three day summit, with the opening ceremony happening on the night of the first day of the ninth month, in Ba Sing Se. We are looking forward to seeing you there! - Avatar Aang of the Air Nomands
Katara felt her eye twitch. "Aang..."
"Iroh gave me a few tips when I was drafting it," the young monk said, smiling oh so proudly.
"Why does the summit start the day of the comet?!"

Catching Snowflakes
Maddie hasn't been back to Hershey since she ran to LA, to Evan. But her parents had asked them to come back for Christmas this year. She'd been scared to return, but she wants Jee to see snow, to experience making snow angels, building a snow man, going sledding.
They are currently at the park her and Evan used to go to every winter. There is snow falling gently around them while Jee sits on Evan's lap in his old Toboggan sled at the top of the hill giggling with glee as her and her Uncle Buck get ready to race her Daddy and Uncle Tommy.

I haven't really posted fanfics or written stuff on this account yet, but after the past few days, and then seeing this picture, I just needed the catharsis, so yeah... This is my first imagine/fanfic whatever you want to call it on the account ... (Also, it's not really edited, sorry)
âCupcakes! Cupcakes! Cupcakes!â Jee exclaimed happily as she sat on the countertop, looking at Buck gathering all the ingredients and baking tools.
Buck chuckled at the little girlâs innocent enthusiasm. It was a little refreshing after drowning in the whirlwind of emotions. Maddie was right, maybe hanging out with Jee could help him feel better. âOkay then, what colors do want the frostings to be?â he asked.
âUmm⊠pink for me, Green for Dada, yellow for Mama,â Jee listed as she counted the people on her small fingers, âBlue for you and red for Uncle Tommy,â she stated innocently.
Buck stopped right in track as the bag of flour fell from his hand and landed on the counter, the white powder spilling everywhere like snow. The lump he had become all too familiar with in the past four days returning in throats, his eyes starting to sting again.
âUncle Buck?â Jee asked in confusion. âYou spilled the flour,â she pointed out innocently at the white powder, itâs dust still flying into the air staining Buckâs grey hoodie.
Buck snapped out of his trance, âUh, uh, sorry,â he said quickly, scrambling to find a way to clean the mess. âSorry, IâŠ,â he said, his voice starting to crack.
âUncle Buck, are you okay?â Jee asked as she saw Buck began to shake a little, his breathing trembling as he tried to shove back his sobs and tears.
âI⊠IâŠ,â Buck tried to find the words but failed as the first sob hit. He steadied himself with his hands against the counter as the tears and sobs came pouring out.
âUncle Buck?â Jee asked in confusion as she moved a little closer to him, placing her small hand on his arm.
âI miss him,â Buck admitted with a choked voice as he felt his heart twist and ache in his chest.
Jee didnât know what to do. Then she remembered how her mother would hug her when she would cry, so she moved closer to Buck and wrapped her arms around him as he cried. Â

If you're still doing 1-2 word Bucktommy prompts, how about blizzard conditions đ
Hey! Sorry it took a bit of time to get to this. I'm on and off overwhelmed by asks đ
I love them and I love writing ficlets and microfics and answering questions and thanking folks for kind words, but at the same time, I get a little overwhelmed sometimes. Great prompt! I hope you enjoy this đ„°
Blizzard Conditions
Tommy had never been on the East Coast before. He hadn't really been north of San Fran. So, going along with Maddie, Evan, Chimney, and Jee-Yun to visit some old friends of theirs in the New England area had been a bit of an adventure, to say the least.
Well.
An adventure he enjoyed until he and Evan found themselves on a snow-covered road.
"Shit. The car really isn't moving anymore," said Evan as he tried a fourth time to drive with no real results.
"9-1-1 did say they were sending someone," offered Tommy.
Evan sighed as he slumped back into his seat.
"This really isn't going the way I wanted it to go."
"Oh, you hadn't visited specifically for the blizzard conditions?"
Evan snorted.
"I visited specifically for them," said Evan sarcastically.
"It's really not that big of a deal," Tommy said, but Evan didn't look all that convinced.
"This weekend. It was supposed to be - I don't know. Perusing Newbury Street. Taking goofy historical walking tours around Boston. Not blizzard conditions. Not getting stuck in the snow after turning around from trying to head to Salem. We didn't even get to Salem."
Tommy wrapped his arms around Evan, pulling him close.
"I'm going to tell you something I didn't know before we came," whispered Tommy into Evan's hair, "I hate the fucking snow."
Evan.
Let out a laugh.
"What?"
"I hate the fucking snow. I hate the snow. I hate how cold it is. I don't like how it keeps fucking up every wonderful plan you try to enact. I hate how you just look so sad when the snow ruins another thing. I hate it. If I could punch it in the face, I would."
Evan.
Evan just kept laughing.
"You don't need to hate the snow on my behalf," wheezed Evan.
"Too bad. I hated it already," laughed Tommy, "This has just solidified my hatred. I'm going to be the Kendrick Lamar of hating snow."
"Not the Kendrick Lamar of hating snow," laughed Evan.
Just.
Just grinning.
And looking at Tommy.
And.
"Next time, less snow. Okay?" said Evan, as if he could promise that.
"Yeah. We'll come in the summer or something," said Tommy as he gave Evan a peck on the lips.
Which.
Turned into more.
Maybe a little more than more.
Until.
They sprang away from each other at the sound of tapping on the car window.
"9-1-1 first responders!" called someone from outside, "Heard you might need some help?"
And.
Okay.
They could continue that later.
"Yes, we do!" called Evan, and Tommy snorted at how Evan had to clear his throat.

I desperately want a âSnow in LAâ episode in season 8. Where Buck and Bobby are fine, chatting about how they both used to shovel snow from driveways (Bobby for 50Âą, Buck for a couple dollars) and Maddie is trying to find a patch of snow to take pictures of Jee for Christmas cards (despite it being January or something). Meanwhile the rest of the fire fam are shivering because theyâre all LA locals and they donât understand how Buck and Bobby arenât dying.
It could have a really nice opening scene too. Like, Buck and Bobby on the roof. Hen calling back to them like âitâs getting cold out here, donât wait up too longâ
Buck laughs and nods because itâs 28°F. Heâs been through worse. Bobby worked a blizzard that got down to -27°F and he was just fine.
Then Buck takes a big inhale to feel the cold in his lungs. And turns to Bobby, smiling like a child, âdo you smell that?â
And Bobby lights up for a second before he remembers itâs LA. âSnow.â
