Okay, so she's a witch but she's also a scientist building machines that run on or produce more magic. But she's also kind of a mad scientist because the machines she builds are stealing magic from people (which she is aware of) and she almost blows the earth up. And she has really gay vibes.

a) she is canonically grey-aro and pansexual. also trans b) girlie got dropped into a timeloop and then got an ability to remember all loops and used that to get data for her thesis. she has several times killed people for the purpose of seeing how everyone else will react. and once her alibi for not killing a guy was "i already have data about people reacting to someone like him dying. i wouldve killed this other girl instead because shes been carrying ur asses"

this is a timeloop story, and characters subconsciously remember previous loops (and can start remembering them consciously), and all of them die at least once. if you want specific characters, im gonna say Amelie Maçon (as she gets a shown death that is most significant to the plot as a whole), Rashmi Jamil (theyve got a similar deal to Amelie, but that particular death is never shown) and Jasper Jasmine "Jazz" Jekyll (she remembers the loops, including her deaths, clearly and consciously). i was gonna also add whoever has the highest shown death count but after counting thats a four-way split and Jazz is one of them so

Monster high Freaky Fusion except the fusion machine was created by Jackson. He’s sick and tired of people bullying and looking down on him for being part normie.

Holt belongs here, but Jackson never will. He can’t go to the normie world because it’ll put Holt in danger. So he’s decided to do himself and Holt a favour in separating them both.

Much like his great grandfather, Henry Jekyll tried long ago. It’s his research Jackson’s using and while Holt is supportive, imagining all the parties he can throw and fun he can have.

He’s not as jazzed about this as Jackson is.

“You’ll finally be without me, free to do whatever you want. Isn’t that what you’ve always wanted?”

“Yeah but…it didn’t go so well for gramps did it?”

Unfortunately Manny decided to ruin Jackson’s hard work causing the machine to malfunction and misfire.

Turning several monster high students into hybrids. Jackson and Holt teach them how to cope with their new situation, and in doing so become closer.

Everyone sees what life is like for Jackson and realises how poorly they’ve been treating for him.

Jackson learns from his great grandfathers mistakes, embraces his mixed heritage and finally gets the love he deserves.

They throw a party, one with Jackson friendly music so he can join in this time. It was Holt and Heaths idea.

one thing I absolutely adore about tgwdlm is how completely and irrevocably a stage musical it is. it HAS to be a stage musical - the medium is so deeply baked into the story that it truly would not translate to another medium.

some reasons why:

the musical style is old-fashioned in a way that screams classic broadway. you can't get away from it, especially in songs like "lah dee dah dah day" and "show stoppin number". and it's not just the music, it's the dancing too - have you ever seen a kickline in a movie musical, once, ever? or jazz hands? gimme a break

along similar lines - all the broadway references! hamilton of course, but also wicked and mamma mia and jekyll & hyde

all the attention deliberately brought to the lighting and set! the performers in "la dee dah dah day" loudly saying "lights down!" when it's over; ted, paul, and emma striking the stage after "show stoppin number"; the lighting panels used as sirens, TVs, showcasing hudgins' alexa, and more; ted wheeling the big meteor prop off the stage after "let it out". they don't let you forget that we're in a theater.

all the hokey ass miming and special effects???? charlotte and hudgins having their guts ripped out is flashy and fun onstage because of the intestine props. emma and ted having blood capsules in their mouths. paul, emma, and zoey violently shaking when pantomiming being in a helicopter. ted running in place, moving forward or back to suggest movement across the road. it's all so fun and consistently reminds you that this is a stage

double-casting as intentional obstruction of the truth. we're used to seeing one actor play several roles in a musical, so when a familiar face shows up in a new costume we assume it's a new character. but it was zoey flying the helicopter to clivesdale, and I think it was zoey in the hospital at the end as well. you couldn't pull that shit in a movie because movies don't double-cast.

the role of the audience, the laughter and gasps and reactions and applause, especially the applause at the end when emma is begging the audience members to let her use their phone and demanding to know why they're clapping; sure movies have audiences too but the presence of the audience as part of the story makes a point about societal ideals as something we all have a part in that a movie just couldn't make in the same way

on a related note - emma's sudden awareness of the stage and the audience as the horror trope where the person realizes they're trapped and will imminently die. she knows she can't escape because it's just a fuckin loop. she knows no one will save her because they're all clapping. you couldn't do that in a movie because in a movie there is a fourth wall, whereas on a stage there's nowhere for the characters to run away. on a stage the characters can look you, the audience, directly in the eye, with no camera or screen between you

FL-inspired book recs, part 2!

The Shuttered Palace: Did You Hear About Kitty Karr? by Crystal Smith Paul. when Kitty Karr, a white film star, dies and leaves her estate to the Black St. John sisters, everyone wants to know why. Elise, the oldest of the three sisters, takes on the responsibility of getting Kitty’s affairs in order, and stumbles on a secret that could change everything. told in both Elise’s words and Kitty’s own, the book examines wealth, fame, race, gender, family, and the inner workings of Hollywood. I’m not usually very into the palace, but I think the themes here of family ties, facades, and who exactly gets to be rich and famous could be a nice parallel.

The Stacks: Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine. an alternate history where the library of Alexandria was never destroyed, and now controls all the world’s knowledge. Jess Brightwell, a book smuggler, passes the entrance exam to join the Library’s ranks. but nothing about the Library is quite what it seems, and Jess and his fellow postulants are about to learn just how powerful- and dangerous- knowledge can be. this is the first book in what is honestly one of my favorite series that I’ve ever read.

The Brass Embassy: The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo. a retelling of The Great Gatsby from Jordan Baker’s point of view, set in a version of the Jazz Age with demons, magic, and the possibility of losing your soul. Vo’s version of Jordan is a queer Vietnamese woman adopted by the wealthy Baker family as a child, and I loved her narration. I don’t really care for the original great gatsby, but this version hooked me immediately.

Exceptional Stories

Caveat Emptor: Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu. isolated but wealthy households, mysterious characters that you know are vampires but the protagonist doesn’t, be careful what you wish for, something oddly romantic about what the narrator and the antagonist have going on… sound familiar? I think Carmilla is technically a novella, so it’s a shorter read than some of these other books.

Factions

The Masters: The Bartimaeus Sequence by Johnathan Stroud. a series of four books (a main trilogy and a prequel) that takes place in an alternate London where the government is controlled by magicians who get their powers from summoning spirits. the first book, The Amulet of Samarkand, is narrated alternatively by Bartimaeus, a djinni summoned to help a young apprentice get revenge on a powerful rival, and Nathaniel, an ambitious magician’s apprentice whose revenge plot soon spirals out of control. Stroud’s magicians parallel FBG’s masters in many ways, and one that jumps out immediately is Nathaniel’s later role as the information minister, and how closely it resembles Pages’s ministry of public decency.

The University: The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. it’s about an experiment gone awry, and the truths that might be better left unfaced. another novella, this classic horror story may have been inspired by a friend of Stevenson’s, a french teacher who appeared to be a perfectly normal academic, but turned out to have murdered his wife and possibly several other people by poisoning them. this, along with the focus on Jekyll’s previous high status in the academic community, puts me in mind of the investigations in the university storyline, and the Summerset vs Benthic rivalry.

The Tomb-Colonies: Whichwood by Taherah Mafi. when Laylee’s mother dies, and her father abandons her, she is left as the only mordeshoor in the village of Whichwood. she spends her days washing the bodies of the dead and preparing their souls for the afterlife. rejected by the townspeople and slowly dying as her magic is drained away, her only company is the dozens of ghosts in her shed, awaiting burial. one day, she meets Alice and Oliver, two strangers on a mission to save her. this is technically a companion to one of Mafi’s earlier books, Furthermore, but I read Whichwood before I knew there was another book, and I understood it perfectly fine.

the longest time he slept was 1 hour, 58 minutes and 26 seconds

he basically lives off of energy drinks and shit

he also is anemic (iron deficient) and he doesn't know

there are a lot of times when he doesn't have his ice cream looking hairstyle bc he doesn't have time to do it, or he'll just forget

after becoming friends with Nicktoons, he became a better person and treated Carl decently and people were scared (including Carl)

Miscellaneous Jackson Jekyll/Holt Hyde headcanons Part 2: Electric Boogaloo

-Starting out with a few headcanons about Jax's time on the casketball team. Jax is much more athletic than Holt thanks to his time on the team and the fact that he cares about his physical health a lot more than Holt does.

-Though, out of all the casketball team members, Jackson is the most likely to foul out. On one particular occasion, he was just about to foul out and asked if he could "throatslam player 8" instead of "fouling out in a lame way". Clawd okay-ed this.

-During the casketball national tournament, on the first night, Granite High stole the hubcaps from the Monster High school bus. In retaliation, Jackson and Deuce formulated a plan to siphon the gas from the Granite High bus. They were never caught.

-Jackson can hold his own rather well in fights, even though he isn't as aggressive or reckless as Holt, especially when it comes to physical altercations. Though, even still, Jax usually loses his fights thanks to the fact that most people that pick fights with him are full-blood monsters.

-Holt's eyesight is just about as bad, if not worse than Jackson's. He absolutely refuses to wear contacts or glasses for fear of looking like a "total nerd". He also refuses to wear his fearing aids.

-Holt's voice always sounds like there's just a little bit of autotune on it. Not much, but enough to be noticable.

-Holt carries around a kazoo everywhere he goes. "For emergencies".

-Jackson can stomach almost anything. Sweet, sour, spicy, you name it. Holt, on the other hand, is severely lactose intolerant and deathly allergic to raspberries.

-Catty Noir, Operetta, and Holt all have a group chat. Holt has lovingly titled it "Sax on the Beach" thanks to the jazz-rock album they're working on together.

-Deuce once mistook Holt's cork grease (for his saxophone) as chapstick. Holt tried to warn him. It was too late.

Monster high but Manny wakes up strapped to a table in the mad science labs. Jackson’s standing over him.

Manny: Normie?! What is this?!

Jackson: Oh this? You see my grandfather had a theory that every normie had the capability to become a monster.

Jackson: He managed to separate those parts of himself and became known as both Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Jackson smirks.

Jackson: And I want to see if the opposite is true. You’re going to help me with that.”

Manny glares and Jackson chuckles.

Manny: As if I will! You can’t do this!

Jackson: I can’t? But I thought being this freaky was all part of my ‘normie nature’ that you all detest so much.

Manny: Holt! You can’t let him do this!”

A chuckle is heard as Jackson slips headphones on his head.

Holt: What can I say, I’m not one for school but I’m pretty jazzed to know what the answer will be.

Manny stares at him in shock.
