this idea was in the back of my head for the longest time, so I decided to draw them out! Someone please give them better names.

This was unavoidable, i was going to make a crossover au sooner or later (i think i cooked tho)

I will now ramble about the implications of bug Jekyll and Hyde in Hallownest.

Everything takes place in the golden age of Hallownest, in the city of tears. Jekyll is an upstanding citizen and renowned doctor/scientist (he ofc lives in the fancy side of the city). I decided to keep his motives the same as in the novella (initially i was going to make him want to get infected, mixing soul and infection to make the potion and separate his infected and uninfected selves, but i remember coming up with some inconsistency issues and certain parts that didn't quite fit the original story so I scrapped that in the end).

I settled on Jekyll making the potion with soul (i think this fits exceptionally well since Lanyon calls jekyll's studies pseudoscience in the book and the use of soul is frowned upon in hallownest)

Hyde is uninfected in the beginning, just does whatever he wants (in a very mischievous matter, as one does) but later gets infected to distance himself from jekyll and to be even more of a menace (he still has his consciousness when infected, like xero. Especially because of this line the use of 3rd person towards the end in the last chapter.

Oh yeah, i think jekyll's house and laboratory would look something like this [in game it would be only one room, kind of like Lurien's room atop his spire (yes, i consider lurien's house to only be that room, not the entire tower)] but with more soul sanctum equipment and smaller (please appreciate the screenshots from my "psychoanalyzing bug architecture sigmund freud style" folder)

been tinkering with this self-indulgent little thing for a lil' while now, but I think it's finally ready to release into the wild - I've seen a few takes on the concept of a Gravity Falls and Jekyll and Hyde crossover already - and with the nature of things there's likely going to be quite a bit of overlap - but nonetheless I wanted to try and make my own take on it. (I will note, though, that I was quite inspired by @maruchanart - especially in regards to Bill's design :])

Now - "The Strange Case of Dr Pines and Mr Cipher" is quite the mouthful (and no doubt quite the painful hashtag) - so from here onwards I will simply refer to this as

The Strange Case AU

I haven't worked out the details yet - and the details that I have are likely to change considering I originally based this off the musical and am now also reading the original novel but- As it stands -

This AU will be loosely based on a combination of the original Robert Louis Stevenson novel and the later Jekyll & Hyde musical. If I end up making any sort of animated content I will likely use the original 1994 recordings (they're gorgeous, can you blame me?), but I am most visually inspired by the 2001 production (the one with David Hasselhoff in it - I've already stolen his ponytail for my Ford lol)

Though the AU features the GF cast (those of them that were around in the 70s and 80s anyway), it will be set back in the early 1800s like the original story. We'll sort out the time anomalies as they arise - I don't want to think about it too hard right now I imagine there might be some shifts to a couple family trees though...

The roles of Jekyll and Hyde will - understandably - be played by Dr. Stanford Pines and Mr. William Lucipher

Stanford's character remains mostly the same - he is still a brilliant scientist, curious about the strange and a workaholic to the core - but he leans more towards the egotistic (there's a lot more of his "Why didn't Rudolph use his red-hot nose to burn his oppressor's workshop to the ground?" side showing through)

The main roles get a lot muddier from here - especially considering some of the character changes between the novel and the musical - but Fiddleford mainly plays a joint role of Lanyon and Emma, with some Utterson thrown in where suitable (and potentially a bit of Lucy too--see I told you it gets muddy real quick). A brilliant mind for mechanics and mathematics, but also a mind prone to paranoia. He is in perpetual conflict over his feelings about Stanford's experiment and his feelings about Stanford himself.

Stanley mostly replaces Utterson from either version of the story, an likely whatever parts of Lanyon that can't taken over by Fidds. After getting disowned - and lacking his twin's much higher social reputation - he ends up working at a factory.

Another J&H crossover idea I had: Have you ever read the Uglies series?

Imagine Jekyll (could be the original book, could be TGS) ending up in Uglies because of plot contrived time travel stuff. Imagine the people there end up figuring out what happened to him (maybe the guy from the museum of Rusty technology knows something that could've done done this) but they assume he's from another city at first because it turns out that he's what they call a "natural Pretty." Inspired by TGS and how, not only is everyone he meets positively taken by his big amber eyes and his brilliant smile, there are so many stories of people getting the physical copy of the comic and all their friends flocking to comment on how handsome Jekyll is, kinda getting into the story themselves out of attraction to the guy. His sirenish charm even works in real life. Reminded me of the Pretties from Uglies.

But you know what about them reminds me of him even more than that? The lesion thing. That brain surgery. The one that inhibits your ability to feel your emotions very strongly or to be very alert or clearheaded. The one that increases your susceptibility to social influence and makes your senses dull. Puts you in a daze where time feels like a syrup and you feel pleasant always, but never pleasure. Where you're never fully there. For the purposes of suppressing their ability to get into destructive conflicts. To keep them away from "ugly" thoughts and feelings. Wouldn't do to have a group of people that picturesque spoiled by a capacity for behavior that doesn't match. The surgery that does the exact opposite of what the potion does. This is what it really looks like when you extract all there is in you that is unsocial or extreme. Imagine Jekyll finding out what happens to Pretties' brains and making the connection. Imagine him realizing this could just have easily been what happened to him and being horrified.

I think it would be fun.

So! @jawline-of-steel has been writing a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde AU fanfic and I am in love with it! Well! We thought it a fun idea to make a AU within an AU! Jekyll + Hyde and Jemima's 3 kiddos! hyde's anatomy

Psychological / Neurological Aspects

this is the first thing that happens before the actual physical transformation

the formula interacts with the brain to produce large amounts of endorphins and stimulants

this is so that the person doesn't experience too much pain before, during, and after the transformation; but of course that has its limits

the stimulants help the body move around because the transformation leaves the body vulnerable. so once the transformation's over, the stimulants can help move the body to a safer area

Physical Aspects - Hyde

in the first transformation, hyde looked pale due to the blood loss. see the details of the transformation here

over time hyde gradually regains color

hyde looks young because the formula interacted with the youth elixir jekyll took, so hyde looked like jekyll's teen self

since hyde was high on stimulants on the first time, he didnt notice that the general structural integrity of his body was hanging by a thread

so much so that jekyll is bedridden for 4 months

hyde's skeletal structure is based of a four-legged mammal (like cats, dogs, bears, big cats, etc.)

hyde was hunched over in the early transformations because the body isnt still yet used to the transformation

but over time he can stand upright

hyde's recovery into a healthy and strong entity is because of the constant use of the formula

also hyde can parkour his way out of most situations

over time he gains more physical strength

Physical Aspects - Jekyll

he doesnt bleed/melt after the first transformation bc his flesh just squashes and stretches depending who he transforms into

jekyll looks a lot older, ie his skin is a lot thinner, and his body becomes progressively get weaker and weaker that his hair turns white (in which the appearance undos the elixir)

over time, bc jekyll has been taking the formula frequently, he gains tolerance and so his body is resisting the transformation sequence

back then, it was jekyll/hyde and vice versa; later in the story, it is mid-transformation/hyde. this is one of the many reasons why jekyll is desperate to make the antidote for the formula

at one point jekyll's body is so weak that he is almost crawling

Physical Aspects - General

there is a supernatural aspect to hyde's form

to start the transformation process the formula puts the mind into the soul (bc the bone cronching process shuffles the spine and the throat is always the most affected by the skeletal transformation)

the mind acts as some sort of barrier for the soul, so whenever people see hyde, his intents seep into the world

for example, if hyde is plotting a vengeful murder, a person nearby can sense it

it's the same for jekyll

obviously, both are capable for a spectrum of intents

however, during the transformation, since the body is literally being broken down, the mind-soul is more seen

with lanyon seeing this, the revelation had caused physical damage which also damaged his psyche

probably going to edit this if i get ideas

Cooking stuff up rn, take my little drafts for their heads :3 (jekyll and hyde for my au yipee!)

I have come up with so many different reasons as to why Hyde doesn’t wear the glasses. One of my most recent ideas is that the glasses simply just don’t fit on his bigger nose. Haha.

Anyway this is me dipping my feet more into the “look basically the same” idea. The idea is basically js to make Hyde look like a younger Jekyll to the point you could guess he was his son, which is the kind of assumption Utterson would probably make 😭 I want them to be so similar that when Utterson sees Hyde’s face for the first time like in the book he’d have anime flashbacks to when he and Jekyll were younger. because thats js funny to me.

but yeah. they have to be different enough for it to be reasonable that you wouldnt question it at first glance, but similar enough that you could believe there’d be some skeptics. a very hard balance but im managing for now 😭

also js fyi im kinda js drawing this to get down their hair and colours and not including the more detailed body horror stuff i have planned. like realistically hydes eyelids shouldnt be able to come down according to the rules i made for the transformation in the au but like im js trying to figure stuff out. when i do draw the actual body horror stuff, itll be disgusting and detailed, dont worry :3
