why did jekyll just have an axe in his lab

kinda fucked up that nobody noticed anything wrong with jekyll up until he locked himself up in the lab

heck, mr utterson didnt even know about hyde up until enfield's story. before that, he was just a nobody who suddenly came up in jekyll's will

and lanyon didnt even know that hyde existed

and i dont think jekyll has any family members to check up on him, other than poole and the other servants

i wonder what they were thinking when jekyll locked himself in the lab, experimenting on countless animals, hearing their cries throughout the night

or when jekyll started locking his bedroom door

or when he started to sleep in during the day

or when hyde started going into his house at night like he owns it

or when he attends less parties and gatherings because he says he's too tired or busy

or when he's starting to drift away from his friends at work

or when he doesnt go to work everyday like he used to

i was wondering where rl stevenson got edward from so i searched it up

i know that hyde came from hyde park--which was established by henry viii

then i got stumped at "edward"

i thought that for the longest time, that hyde park can be seen along edward street, turns out that wasnt true and i just made it up and forgot about it

it turns out that edward vi was henry viii's successor

ive been racking my brain for the longest time and the answer was right there

some rambles about the au:

when jekyll first drank the potion, he hadnt realized how him and his "evil" self are completely different people, despite the fact that they have the same mind

jekyll, the talented and respected doctor, would be trusted within a heartbeat, no matter how dire the situation is

while this other person, who he named hyde, is often met with either pity or hostility due to his looks

even if his life as hyde wasnt the greatest, there was a strange feeling of exhiliration, a release from all societal pressure

once he realized that he is now two different people, all the flaws in his life as jekyll became more apparent that he felt stupid not noticing sooner

he realized how much of a grip his father had on his life

his father drilled into him in pursuing a career in healthcare

he has an interest/passion for chemistry, but now, he wonders how much influence father has regarding his passion for healthcare

and it dawned on him on how much he despises surgery

the reason why his father wanted him to pursue surgery is because he wanted him to follow in john hunter's footsteps (wow really? not his father's footsteps?) because he was the "father of scientific surgery" and wants him to become such a person of high status that it overshadows his horrible and shameful life

he hated that he had to trudge through the nausea in his training, having to convince himself as the living person in front of him was just a pile of meat so that his hands wouldnt shake as much

and surgery was such a solemn job back then, too

surgeons have to wear black to pay respects if the patient dies and it is easier to hide the blood and visera

every time he operated on someone, he thought it was horrible and may even be disrespectful for the patient and their family and friends that the first people to attend the funeral are doctors and assistants rather than them

especially considering the success rate is low because their knowledge of the human body was still new

especially considering that the higher ups and even his collegues didnt even care about the patients just as long they profit off of it

all because to save an ego for a man who is long dead

he didnt entirely quit, he just leaned on more to being a physician

there, he gets to talk to people, and they can report back to him if the treatment's effective or not--literally the complete opposite

but even then, he started to despise even this

he sometimes cursed his own kindness, shackling him to these obligations, these situations where he had to consider the hospital's success before his patients' lives because he and other few are the only ones competent enough to keep the hospital running. because otherwise he would be free from all of this

all the while being called a jekyll

jekyll is truly a kind man, a talented doctor. but sometimes he gets tired

to the point he made that will

it was a perfect suicide. where he doesnt really have to die, he simply disappeared

when hyde first appeared, he met him in the mirror with at first, bewilderment, then with joy and amazement, like how a person reacts to a newborn baby. and he gets to name him-- not just his first name, his entire identity.

hyde was someone that came from him, without being stained by the name of "jekyll"
