Annie & I Take Altamont!
The first time I saw the small town of Altamont, Illinois was this past June at the John Deere G reunion. I was taken with the lovely mansion I saw there. We also loved the fun antique shop the hubby and I stopped at. I saw that they were having a music and wine fair at the Charles Wright House Museum. I thought perfect! A trip for Annie! About once a month or so, my friend Annie Jansen and I…

Stéphane Boudin

Stéphane Boudin in the Treaty Room of White House,                      photographed by Jacqueline Kennedy c. 1960s
Stéphane Boudin is believed to be one of the most influential interior designers of all time. Throughout his 40 year design career, Boudin has  designed rooms all over the world for some of the most prominent members of society. Boudin’s designs were ultra luxurious, gaining him the crown of the ‘Master of French Style.’
Boudin gained his introduction to the design world through his father, who owned a business working with trimmings and tassels. It was through his father’s business that he met Jean-Henri Jansen. Jansen was the founder of interior design firm, Maison Jansen. Talking over a business meeting concerning tassels and trimmings would eventually lead to Boudin's successful career in interior design. After only a few years working for Jansen, Boudin became the president of Maison Jansen, the first internationally recognized design firm.
Tumblr media
Interior design firm Maison Jansen’s 9 Rue Royale headquarters, c. 1970, Paris
It was his attention to detail and historical accuracy that made his rooms so unforgettable. People adored the drama and impressive impact of his design. It was this experience that attracted clients of the utmost prestige. He designed for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor,  Elsie de Wolfe, Henry Channon, and the royal families of Yugoslavia, Belgium and Iran, just to name a few. After designing a party pavilion for interior decorator Elsie de Wolfe, she donned him “the decorators decorator,” a title fit for only his level of skill.
Boudin’s career lasted from about the 1920’s to the 1960’s - a time when many designers were focused on modernizing design, doing away with embellishments and grandeur, focusing more so on form and function. Although Boudin was interested in keeping his designs fresh and up to date with the times, he was increasingly interested in the traditional design elements of the past. He was a genius in period styles and became widely known for incorporating history into his designs.

He worked with American antiques expert, Henry Francis du Pont of the Winterthur Museum as well as interior designer, Sister Parish. During the renovation, he impressed the first lady so much on the now famous design of the Red and Blue Rooms, that she granted him full creative direction for the Green Room, Cabinet Room and the Oval Office.
In the late 1960’s, Boudin would take on one of his most famous projects. Commissioned by Jackie Kennedy, he was tasked with renovating and redesigning several rooms in the White House. Jackie Kennedy wanted the redesign to include historical and international inspiration. Being that Boudin was the ‘master of French design’ and period style, he gave great thought as to how French tastes have impacted the White House throughout American history. He also took a lot of inspiration from the American Empire Style, mixing and matching the two.

Stéphane Boudin was just one of the many world renowned designers that would go on to work with Maison Jansen. Date Night
12 Days of Whumpmas 2021: A Partridge in a Pear Tree: Tied to a Tree | Given as a Gift | Putting up the Tree
Takes place about six months before Inspection
Of Vampires and Men Masterlist
CW: Vampires, slavery, blood drinking, dehumanization, starvation mention, food, multiple whumpers, lady whumper
Reeve stared at the ceiling. He had counted the wooden boards at least thirty times. He knew every loop and curl of the wood, every knot. He was in an isolation cell after he had gotten the flu. The vampires hadn’t wanted to risk him infecting the other humans, so here he was. Reeve sighed. He was feeling much better now and if he didn’t get out of this cell soon he would scream. The boredom was excruciating.
Reeve perked up at the sound of footsteps. The metal door swung open and Lieutenant Jansen stepped into the cell. The vampire leaned against the doorframe, his slim form backlit by the torch out in the hall.
“Feeling better?” He asked,
“Yes sir,” Reeve said.
“Excellent. Get up 486, we have a date to go to.”
Reeve scrambled to his feet, swaying a little after days of laying down. He moved towards the door and Jansen clamped a hand on his shoulder, leaning in close. His voice was dangerous when he spoke.
“I expect you to be on your best behavior tonight. I assure you, if you mess this up for me I will make your life a living hell.”
Reeve gulped, his heart in his throat. “Y-yes sir.”
He didn’t know what Jansen had planned, but at least he was getting out of the cell. He could be good. He would be good. He didn’t want to think about what would happen if he wasn’t.
Reeve followed Jansen down the hall, their footsteps echoing on the stone floor. They turned right, then left, then right again. Soon enough, Reeve lost track of where they were. He had never been to this part of the fort. His curiosity got the best of him.
“Where are we going, sir?”
“The officers’ quarters,” Jansen said shortly.
Reeve’s eyes widened at that. He didn’t know of any humans who had been there. His stomach twisted.
Finally they stopped at a door. Jansen spun around, grabbing Reeve by the collar. “Best behavior, remember?” He hissed.
“Yes sir,” Reeve choked out. Satisfied, Jansen nodded. He let go of Reeve’s collar and smoothed out the wrinkles in his shirt and ran a hand through Reeve’s hair.
“I wish I had time for you to bathe first, but she’s waiting. Good thing you don’t smell too bad.”
Before Reeve could react to that, Jansen opened the door and ushered him inside. The room was spacious, with light green wallpaper and overstuffed furniture. A female vampire was waiting for them on the sofa, and her face lit up when she saw Jansen. She was pretty, with curly red hair and bright green eyes.
“Oh my goodness, is this the surprise you were telling me about?” She asked, her voice a squeal that made Reeve flinch.
Jansen patted a hand on Reeve’s back. “It sure is, Nellie. You were talking about how much you wanted to feed from a human again, so I figured you would really like 486.” Jansen was blushing. Reeve looked between the two. Oh gods, Jansen was using him to woo this lady. With great difficulty, Reeve suppressed the urge to roll his eyes. Best behavior.
“You’re so sweet! He’s absolutely adorable,” Nellie said with a smile.
Jansen led him over to the sofa, gesturing for him to sit down next to Nellie. Reeve did as he was told, perching on the edge of the sofa. His heart was beating too fast. Jansen had sat down right next to him and he was surrounded.
“Ladies first,” Jansen said with a smile.
Reeve tilted his head to the left, giving Nellie a clear view of his neck.
“Oh gosh, I’m so excited,” she said. She bit down and Reeve gave a little whimper as the fangs punctured his neck. Her lips were cold as she drank and Reeve closed his eyes. One, two, three, four… He found that counting helped when they were feeding, helped him to control the fear. Reeve’s head was starting to spin when finally Nellie finished her meal and closed up the wounds.
“That was delicious, Isaac. I had forgotten how much better blood tastes when coming directly from the source. Thank you so much!”
“I’m glad you liked it, sweetheart. I personally think 486 is one of the tastiest we have right now.” Without warning, Jansen bit down on Reeve’s neck, drawing a gasp of pain from him. When he finished feeding, Reeve’s head drooped. He was exhausted.
“Aww, he’s sleepy, how cute,” Nellie said. She pulled him down so his head was resting on her lap. Reeve tensed at the contact, but then her fingers started to card through his hair. It had been so long since he had been touched gently. Tears threatened to fall and he closed his eyes, pushing his head into her touch.
He laid like that for a while, head cradled in Nellie’s lap, as she and Jansen talked. Reeve didn’t really hear the conversation, he was too absorbed by the feeling of gentle fingers in his hair.
“Did you hear her, 486?” Reeve started awake. Jansen was looking at him, a flash of displeasure in his eyes.
“N-no sir, I’m sorry, I must have fallen asleep,” Reeve said. Gods, he hoped he wouldn’t be punished.
“Oh, that’s quite alright 486. I was just asking if you were hungry?” Nellie said.
“Yes ma’am,” Reeve replied. Hopefully the honest answer was the one she was looking for.
“I’ll go get some food,” Jansen said, getting up. Reeve’s eyebrows furrowed. What was going on?
Jansen returned shortly with a tray. There was bread and grapes and cheese. Reeve’s mouth started to water at the sight of the feast. He hadn’t had a proper meal in over a week.
“Sit up please,” Nellie said. Reeve scrambled to obey, his eyes locked on the food. Jansen set the tray on Reeve’s lap and Reeve instantly reached out to grab the bundle of grapes. Nellie playfully slapped his hand away.
“No, I’ll feed you. You just chew and be cute,” she said. She picked up the grapes and pulled one off, bringing it to his lips. Reeve opened his mouth and gently took the grape in his teeth, chewing and swallowing. The taste of the food was marred by the humiliation. He hated being hand fed, hated the way they treated him like an animal. But he was so hungry and Nellie was feeding him and he should be grateful that she was being so kind as to make sure he was fed. He would play the part of an animal if it meant he got to eat.
Nellie and Jansen chatted, Nellie feeding him bits of bread and cheese and grapes. Soon enough, the tray was empty. Jansen set it aside. “Well, I think it’s time to get 486 back to his cell.”
“Of course,” Nellie said. “Did you enjoy the food?” She asked him with earnest eyes.
Reeve gave her a smile. “Yes ma’am, thank you very much.”
“You’re welcome, 486,” Nellie said.
With that, Jansen guided him to his feet and led him out of the room and back through the halls. They walked in silence until they reached the metal door to the isolation cell. Reeve’s stomach dropped. He had hoped that he would get to rejoin the other humans.
“You did good, 486,” Jansen said as he opened the door. “Not a word about this to anyone, got it?”
“Yes sir,” Reeve said as he stepped inside.
Jansen nodded, closing the door and locking it. Reeve flopped down onto the floor, leaning against the cold stone wall. He absentmindedly ran a finger across the scar on his cheek. He didn’t realize he was crying until he felt the warm tears on his finger. Gods. He started to sob in earnest, putting his head in his hands. Yes, he had been shown kindness. But it was the same kindness that was shown to a dog. The vampires hadn’t seen him as a person. He was just an animal, an object to them. Day by day, bit by bit, he was losing his personhood, surrendering it to the vampires in exchange for a chance at survival. Yes, the feedings were terrifying, the knowledge that the vampires could do anything they wanted to him. But just as frightening as the physical pain was the way his mind was starting to accept his place. He was losing himself, and that was the scariest thing of all.

These are the 6 best circular companies of 2022 in the Netherlands
Tumblr media
The Week of the Circular Economy starts on Monday 7 February. Every year, the most innovative projects and products of companies and governments are rewarded with a Circular Award. These are the contenders for 2022.
Whether it concerns a floor, mattress, house or bicycle, companies are working on circularity in all kinds of areas. On Monday 7 February 2022 , the public has chosen the best circular project or product from a shortlist in three categories. The categories are Business Large, Business Small and Public. The three best per category have been selected from 161 entries. These are the companies that have a chance to win the prize with their product:
Interface
Floor manufacturer Interface attaches great importance to sustainability and circularity. In 1994, founder Ray Anderson changed the course of the stock market listed company. “We developed the philosophy in the 1990s, but we didn't know how what steps to take,” said Nigel Stansfield, CEO EMEA in an earlier interview with Change Inc. For years, the company tried all kinds of things, learned, made mistakes and went into dead-ends. It led to three focus points: factories, products and suppliers. For example, Interface wants to ensure that their factories do not have a negative impact on the environment, makes carpets from discarded fishing nets and is now developing a carpet tile that even stores CO2.
Janssen de Jong Bouw
Jansen de Jong Bouw is a construction company that works on circularly stacked construction concepts. The parts of the houses can be disassembled. This allows the elements to get a second life at the end of their life. In addition, the company uses recycled material as much as possible. For example, the roofs consist of second-hand wood.
Niaga
Niaga designs recyclable mattresses, carpets and furniture panels. The company likes to co-operate. In 2014, for example, it developed a new technology for a fully recyclable carpet together with chemical company DSM. The new carpet consists of only single material: polyester. “The polyester carpet used is fully recyclable,” Elvira Luykx of DSM previously told Change Inc. At the end of 2017, DSM-Niaga sought cooperation with Auping, a French department store, for a circular mattress. That mattress has been on sale since 2020.
The Court of Cartesius
The Hof van Cartesius is a meeting place and workplace in Utrecht. It consists of eight circular buildings with a total of 3,500 square meters of workspace, catering and meeting space for approximately 110 creative and sustainable entrepreneurs. For the construction and furnishing, the Court opted for used materials as much as possible. For example, old railway rails, window frames and floor beams are returned to the buildings. In total, 90 percent of the buildings are circular, since the Court had to use a few new materials alltogether.
Sunt
Sunt saves bananas from the trash by turning them into products. These are bananas that do not reach the supermarket shelf because they do not meet the cosmetic standards of the food industry. Not only small, too crooked or too large bananas are wasted. But also green, ripe and loose bananas. Sunt, for example, uses it to make banana bread and granola. Without refined sugar, butter or oil. The products are often lactose- and gluten-free.
Tumblr media
Roetz
Roetz is a bicycle manufacturer that constructs bicycles based on recycled frames. About 1 million bicycles are discarded every year. Roetz cleans and processes the parts that are still in order. According to the company, the current collection is circular for 30 percent. For public transportation bicycles they come to 70 percent. Roetz is a social enterprise that trains people to become bike mechanics.
Circularity in the public sector
In addition to the business community, universities of applied sciences, housing associations and municipalities are also eligible for a prize. This year these are the Aeres Hogeschool from Almere, the Amsterdam housing corporation Eigen Haard and Greendeal Autodelen (=Car parts) from Utrecht.
Circular economy revolves around the R-ladder
When choosing the finalists, the jury looked at, among other things, 'the R-ladder'. The higher up the ladder the better. It is about maximum reusability and minimum value destruction of raw materials and materials. This year the jury paid extra attention to the phasing out of linear practices. The R-ladder refers to the following matters: refuse, rethink, reduce, re-use, repair, refurbish, remanufacture, repurpose, recycling and recover.
And the winners are...
Janssen de Jong Bouw won in the large companies category with their Modufair project. Roetz was rewarded in the smaller companies category. The winner in the public category will be announced later today.

Davide Macullo Architects
Feeling Space by Philip Jodidio
published by Skira
Though his projects remain resolutely modern, Davide Macullo has found a path that connects his work to what can be called Architecture (with an upper-case A). He is not an ego-driven giver of new forms, but instead a subtle, sensitive interpreter of needs and desires, some expressed, some more innate. He does not come to his work armed with codes as he puts it, doing his best instead to read the meanings of time and space, in order to make residents feel that they have arrived in a place where feelings mean something, where emotion and beauty still reign.

PROFILE
Davide Macullo (b. Giornico, CH, 1965) is a Swiss architect. His international design studio, Davide Macullo Architects, based in Lugano, Switzerland, was founded in 2000.
The ethos of the studio is one that studio promotes an open and cultural exchange with architects, artists and collaborators coming from different backgrounds. The diverse contributions promote a dialogue between the specificity of the project, the universality of the contexts and the psychology of space. This ‘drawing from context’ encourages and helps sustain a local-meets-global, embracing approach to architecture, spanning from the theoretical to the practical and detail level, to territorial analysis, pedagogy and sustainability in construction.
The work of the studio includes graphic design, branding consulting and custom designed furniture, and spans to the creation of contemporary art collections for clients. They have also recently produced a customized collection of rugs for the new Chenot Palace Weggis, and a large series of Davide’s drawings (280 nr.) is included in its art collection.
In Rossa, Canton Grisons, he is a founding member of the Rossarte foundation which promotes public and private interventions in situ by international artists to influence daily life through contemporary art. The first building is the Swisshouse XXXII (Sinusoïde) created in collaboration with Daniel Buren and Mario Cristiani of Galleria Continua.
Prior to the foundation of his own studio, he was project architect in the atelier of Mario Botta with responsibility for over 200 international projects worldwide (1990-2010).
Recent projects include the newly opened Chenot Palace Weggis Health Wellness Hotel, Switzerland; the headquarters of Jansen AG in Oberriet, Switzerland; Samson Assuta Ashdod University Hospital in Ashdod, Israel; WAP ART Foundation, gallery and residence in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea; a Private Museum in Jeju, South Korea; 5* Hotel and SPA facilities in Greece; the Sino-Swiss centre in Tianjing China; a beachfront villa in Heraklion, Greece; several houses in Switzerland and abroad and urban developments in Albania.

What’s in a Name? Table Talk with Kathy Slater
Tumblr media
Every artist has a muse. For Rodin, it was Camille Claudel and for Warhol, Edie Sedgwick. For Kathy Slater, it’s New Orleans.
Now, please don’t get her wrong. She doesn’t hold herself among the ranks of these great masters. But she, too, is an artist but with a different medium. Her canvas is an empty room that calls her to create a unique composition of color, texture and emotion that evokes beauty —whether classic or contemporary.
Kathy Slater finds herself in continued awe of enduring beauty. It’s what has inspired her work as an interior designer and, most recently, as a furniture designer. Like New Orleans, her bespoke furniture collection is a unique assemblage of materials, finishes and styles whose glory stems from the richness of diversity.
I have always been intrigued as to how an artist names their work, so without further adieu, I give to you the story behind the Kathy Slater Table Collection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Josephine
Although inspired by the mid-twentieth century designs of Jansen, the Josephine brass block element recalls the boldness of the Napoleonic era and is therefore named for the emperor’s fiery wife.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Audubon
With its cast leg featuring an acanthus leaf detail and stem-like tapered fluting, the Audubon captures the essence of the centuries-old oaks, grand magnolias and year-round foliage found within Audubon Park.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The St. Ann
The inspiration for this design comes from the reed and ribbon motif seen in 18th and 19th century furnishings. The graceful brass wrapping around the reed-like legs evokes the sensibility of the French Quarter and, more specifically, the Pontalba Apts. that run along St. Ann Street and Jackson Square.
Tumblr media
The St. Charles
Like the towering Victorian mansions along “The Avenue,” the St. Charles has a dominant presence that can hold its own in a room. Its strong yet graceful stature makes it worthy of being named for the city’s most stunning architectural enclave, not to mention a designer favorite.
Tumblr media
The Upperline
The Upperline is a study in stylish contrasts and also this year’s best-seller. Its streamlined profile offers a more modern edge while its classic finish makes it the perfect match for traditional surroundings.
Tumblr media
The Lowerline
The Lowerline features the same sophisticated design as the Upperline, but offers a lower shelf for storage.
Tumblr media
The Pontchartrain
Miles away from the Greek Revivals of the Garden District and the Victorian grand dames of Uptown stand the mid-century ranchers and glamorous glass houses abounding Lake Pontchartrain. As such, the Pontchartrain breaks from old line New Orleans for a look that is fresh and stately— especially when topped with 3/4” clear glass.
Tumblr media
The Prytania
As a wide, winding thoroughfare connecting Uptown and Downtown, Prytania offers a little bit of everything so it should come as no surprise that table packs a lot of punch into a room. With its gleaming brass medallions and X-stretcher, it turns a lot of heads—particularly in the hand-painted French blue finish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Frenchman
For our first foray into seating, we looked to jazz lounges and eclectic music clubs on Frenchmen Street for inspiration. The Frenchman barstool is classically proportioned and comfortable with a flat wrapped X and bordered back.
Kathy’s Slater’s furniture can be seen at showrooms in Atlanta, Houston, Dallas and also in a showroom here in New Orleans. Most of the designs are available in custom sizing (consoles, coffee tables and side tables) with a variety of iron finishes and table top choices ranging from limestone, marble, mirror, cypress or glass.
