While he worked something happened I hate to tell about. I was back in my room getting Phillips’s money for him, and as I looked out the door I saw a Stoker, or somebody from below decks, leaning over Phillips from behind. He was too busy to notice what the man was doing. The man was slipping the lifebelt off Phillips’s back.

He was a big man, too. As you can see, I am very small. I don’t know what it was I got hold of. I remembered in a flash the way Phillips had clung on – how I had to fix that lifebelt in place because he was too busy to do it.

I knew that man from below decks had his own lifebelt and should have known where to get it.

I suddenly felt a passion not to let that man die a decent sailor’s death. I wished he might have stretched rope or walked a plank. I did my duty. I hope I finished him. I don’t know.

Titanic/ Ocean Liners enthusiasts, I'm trying to find a video that had all the wireless messages from that sunday, all the way to the morning of the 15th, but now i can only find ones during the sinking.

forever emotional about the fact that Jack Phillips turned 25 only four days before the Titanic sank. he had so much life left to live.

on April 11th, 1913, he would've turned 26.

on April 11th, 1953, he would've been 66 (the age Harold Bride was when he died in 1956).

today marks his 137th birthday.

i've finally found a titanic controversy that i have strong feelings on and it's how often this photo gets labeled as Jack Phillips and Harold Bride

The dude who took the photo identified the man on the left as Jack Phillips, and wishful thinkers have decided that the other dude is Harold Bride even though they look nothing alike, Harold stated in the inquiries that he hadn't met Jack prior to joining Titanic in Belfast (the photo was taken aboard the Adriatic) and the family have said that it isn't him.
