A new group had formed in hopes of saving the SS United States. They're seeking a federal injunction to prevent her destruction, as she is registered as an official historic landmark in 1999, and sinking her would constitute a violation of law. Furthermore, a significant portion of her construction was made from aluminum, which can not be removed. Based on my understanding, if sunk, that aluminum could polute the water. I'd like to try and draw some attention to this petition that the organization created. I've already signed, and I'd like to urge anyone who sees this to do the same. Even if this petition does nothing, and this groups efforts are in vain, the 15 seconds it takes to sign are well worth the chance of preserving this marvel of human engineering.

There she goes. Seems like ocean liners are beautiful even in death.

After 30 years, the SS United States has left the Philadelphia dock where she rotted, and into history.
She is the ultimate holder of the Blue Riband, the unofficial yet widely praised record for the fastest scheduled trip across the north Atlantic.
A ship slightly larger than the Titanic, she's one of the last famous ocean liners of her size, but has been mothballed since the late 1960s, eventually having all her fittings removed, ruining hope of restoration.
When she is eventually scuttled in the Gulf of Mexico, she takes that prestigious title with her. As a youth, seeing something like her on the move with my own eyes is a once in a lifetime moment.
The second image is oversaturated to get an idea of how she appeared in service. We will likely never see such liners on the high seas again.

We were watching the SSUS being towed from her pier in Philadelphia on stream earlier, and my friend pointed out something that i absolutely CANNOT stop thinking about.

The parrarel here... it's insane. The sad and solemn scene of a once beautiful ship, built during an era which has now long passed, being towed to her final final destination... Welcome back The Fighting Temeraire by J.M.W. Turner

This is my favorite piece of “evidence” for the Titanic switch conspiracy. I genuinely lose my mind laughing whenever I look at it.
Tumblr media
At first glance, the issue is obvious, right? The ship in the top picture is Titanic, mislabeled as Olympic. Titanic had an enclosed A-deck promenade while Olympic’s was left open. They just switched the names and called it “evidence.”
That’s silly enough as it is, but it gets better. See how the ship in the second picture doesn’t have any funnels?
Titanic wasn’t launched in her final configuration - originally, her A-deck promenade was open, just like her sister’s, and was enclosed later on during the fitting-out process. This is what she looked like right after launch (we know this is Titanic and not Olympic because Olympic was painted light grey for her launch):

Yeah, that’s right. Both of those pictures are of Titanic.
They switched the Titanic with the Titanic.

SS United States under tow off the coast of North Carolina. After languishing in Philadelphia for decades, and several attempts to preserve her failing, she is being sent to Louisiana to be sunk in the Gulf as a reef.

Poster advertising the Cunard Line shipping and cruise company, showing a statue of Britannia and a map marking the company's routes (c. 1900). Cunard still offers luxury cruise vacations today.
