I think a " No Robins" AU would be really cool, because while yes, there's no Batman without Robin, can you IMAGINE the cuteness?

By " no robin" I don't mean the boys (Dick and Jason, but later everyone else) stay home, completely unaware of their Goth rat father fighting crime. They absolutely know he's batman and they ABSOLUTELY want kicks in.

But Bruce won't just let his children dive head first in Gotham’s crime pool. So he does what he does best; Pretend.

" B! Are we there yet?"

" Almost. Finish your chocolate milk so Jason can finish his."

Even the Rogues are on board? Selina doesn't mind playing hurt when Dick hits her with a "batarang" from the local toy store. She decides to take it over the top and play dead, going limp,

" You killed her!" Jason screeches, because they LIKE Selina,

Bruce, completely calm as Tim pokes a shaking Selina with a stick, " Robin. What have you done."

Naturally, Dick wails, but luckily, she miraculously "comes back to life" and tells them cats really do have 9 lives. " You owe me so many diamonds, baby"

Bruce shrugs, patting Dick on the back, " You owe me therapy money,"

" Tch. Rich prick."

Harley and Ivy "fight" the birds a lot, but it's just Harley complimenting and hyping up Dick's gymnastics while Ivy swings them around with vines like carnival rides,

When Harley's "arrested", she pulls Bruce aside and is like, " Hey, maybe look into ADHD and autism, pretty sure they all have it, "

" Impossible? That's genetic. I have neither."

" ...1) They're adopted. 2) I have some news for you."

Harvey WILL kill Bruce on sight if he ever tells ANYONE he helped Jason and Tim tie him up with jumping cords. It's already bad enough that video of him slipping on bubblegum bombs (deactivated) is viral

You guys have seen Bruce dosent know his kids are the birds au, but I present to you:

The birds dont know their adoptive dad is actually Batman au. Secret Batman.

Bruce all knows his kids are vigilanties. He cares for all of them with his experience from his medical and technological studies. Hes super proud of all of them for helping Gotham, as reluctant as he is to let them out at night. He cant control when they go out for patrol, except when theyre injured.

Now, think about this. The birds thinking they have one dad, and another batdad. But, they dont know dad is actually batdad. Cmon, sure, Bruce is huge, but there is no way he can be Batman. Bruce is terrified of fighting, and hes so soft and theres no way hed willingly beat up someone. Right..?

At the end of it its like the lego movie style "MY TWO DADS ARE ONE DAD?£?£_?" and now Bruce has to deal with his kids nagging about him normally, but also as Batman. And now Bruce has to upgrade the batmobile to fit 10 kids. Imagine being able to take the batmobile the one time your vigilantie mentor father lets you, then finding out you can ride the fucking batmobile every week.

Funniest thing is Bruce hiding the entire batcave from his kids. Like, theyve walked past every entrance thousands of times. Alfred knows. Alfred has been keeping this secret forever. We love Alfred. However Bruce hides all his injuries is a miracle.

Its gonna be even fucking worse for the villians though. Imagine avoiding both the birds and the bat, because now theyre patrols leave no fucking gap.

he sucks at communication . like he will not explain why he does what he does and struggles to talk. hates nonsensical activities, sorry but its facts. he will give you his card take your friends for shopping but bruce has to run a company and the justice league and ( his kids if its batdad au) whats the point of trailing behind you while you look through clothes like? he isn't into fashion, he thinks you look pretty in everything. you guys get to spend no quality time why not just spend those 2-3 hrs taking you out for dinner after ur done shopping?

doesn't really get how expensive gifts can make someone uncomfortable. he is sort of used to gold diggers or rich women. so when you refuse diamond necklace cuz it isn't even a special occasion wtf brucie, I cant just take that , he wont get it. It kinda feels like I'm inviting discourse by replying to this, so lemme just do an obligatory disclaimer: people are free to create what they want, and they're allowed to have different tastes and interpretations. That's what fandom is. Okay? Okay.

That said.

Personally? Red Hood Tim is... yeah. Does not spark joy. Aside from the Rich Boy in Crime Alley aspect, I guess I'm just not a fan of people making up trauma for Tim so he can be the Saddest Boy, especially when they're taking traits from Jason (which, actually this might be a gripe that spilled over from other fic tropes and not something I have against rr aus, specifically.)

In my opinion, reverse robins is a great setup for us to explore not only the differences but also parallels between the Robins. In that sense, Steph, with her background similarities to Jason, has so much more potential for a Red Hood story.

I wanna know how her morals would play out, how they'd differ from Batgirl!Steph's or RH!Jason's. What are her views on criminals and crime? Does RH!Steph hold the same contempt against her dad like Spoiler!Steph did? What ties her to the city and its community? I wanna see what her dynamic with Batman is like, when she isn't pushed into the shadow of another 'failed' robin, but is instead the First Robin Who Died. How would the effects of her death differ from Jason's, given that she's neither an orphan nor adopted by Bruce? I'm also curious about her relationship with Damian, if it mirrors the mentor-sibling style Batgirl!Steph had with baby Dami. Do they bond over being the few people who knew Batdad before the Tragedy, as opposed to canon where they only ever got to know the post-robindeath version?

So much story potential!

#LITERALLY the only problem I have with the adoption timeline is Bruce had EVERY opportunity to extend adoption as a possibility#after he adopted Jason. they HAD that conversation at the wedding. Dick flat out said he wanted it. Bruce KNEW#and you cant go with the takeaway well Bruce figured Dick was just too old to be adopted at that point when Dick#ended up being much OLDER when Bruce eventually DID adopt him#like....Bruce HAD the opportunities. he HAD the knowledge that Dick wanted adoption even as an adult#and even after a freaking DIRECT conversation that VERBALIZED that this is something Dick wanted#and that not being adopted - especially after seeing Bruce adopt Jason - was a source of angst for Dick#....which again Bruce undeniably knew since he quite literally threw it in Dick's face in the fight after Jason died#.....Bruce just.....lets Dick angst about this for a few more years after all this before FINALLY getting around to adopting#him like it only just occurred to him yeeeears later (in universe time). and then again with Tim it barely takes Bruce any time at all#once adoption/guardianship becomes a need for Tim to offer up adoption as a possibility#like I dont like when fics that are definitively set in pre-Flashpoint continuity act like Bruce NEVER adopted Dick just for the angst#because no it very much did happen and I dont think its necessary to pretend otherwise just to mine that concept for#angst and complicated and resentful feelings - because even WITH the eventual adoption there's room to explore all of that!#and so I think just pretending the adoption never happened counter-productively dilutes or undermines a lot of what Dick DID go through#in regards to this in canon and acts like its not angsty ENOUGH on its own so we gotta pretend the adoption never happened period-#nah. there's pleeeeeenty of room as is for Dick to have hang-ups and issues about this even with the actual eventual adoption. if it plays#out as happened in canon. and if you want a better Batdad-Bruce like.....it really does astonish me#that there arent more AUs that just.....deviate from canon specifically by having Bruce adopt Dick earlier in life#or at least after that convo at Donna's wedding or even just after the end of their estrangement post-Jason's death#since again. Bruce was KEENLY aware of that as a source of angst for Dick. you cant walk back the fact that you've WEAPONIZED#your OWN personal refusal to just. adopt your damn kid already#BUT I DIGRESS#wait where was I before I digressed#oh yeah! I also had thoughts about how basically the ONLY other of his kids Bruce spent significant time acting as#their parent figure before FINALLY extending adoption as an option was actually Cass. and this might#be an interesting thing for Dick and Cass to talk about. their respective feelings of 'why not me' when they had to wait years for what#their brothers were offered pretty much from day one#(Duke is hard to classify here because DC cant make up their mind WHAT his guardianship status even is#between fostered by Bruce and living with his uncle and plus his much more complicated feelings about Bruce given his parents are still alive and he still hopes to be reunited with them someday. so just wanted to make clear I’m not forgetting about Duke I just don’t think his situation parallels with Cass and Dick’s in quite the same way for purposes of this particular thought tangent

dick does not muster one smile during the conversation where bruce gives him all the reasons he never adopted dick. even him saying "Thanks, Bruce. Really." just reads as so flat after bruce tells dick he's proud of him, that he could've never loved a son more even though he never adopted him. like, i dont subscribe to the idea that you can only be family by name or blood, and that some little piece of paper doesn't make you someone's family regardless of feelings, but. bruce totally couldve. and the reasons he gave dick amounted to "i was young and too busy to adopt you" and it's like well no wonder dick doesn't even crack a smile throughout that conversation. he was with bruce for near a decade and never got adopted, and then once dick leaves, bruce does try to make the time and even legal proceedings to adopt jason almost right after meeting him even though things never really died down. the only thing that changed was that bruce had a little more experience and wow i cant even imagine how much that stung to hear that and then make a toast to the new family each of them now carry on, which just so happens to not include the other

Granted, that’s probably not the first thing Danny should be saying to the guy that just bit the curb, but in his defense; he’s not running on 100% right now either.

The man -- tall, towering, and broader than Danny is tall -- whips around on his heel, black frayed cape flaring out impressively. Danny would've whistled in appreciation, but he takes the time instead to wipe the back of his hand across his mouth, smearing the blood running from his nose across his cheek.

"Sorry." He blinks widely, not even flinching as the man with the horns zeroes in on him. "That was rude of me. I have a really bad brain-to-mouth filter; Sam says its what always gets me into trouble."

And she's not wrong either, per say. His smart mouth is what landed him in this situation -- with blood blossom extract running through his veins and cannibalizing the ectoplasm in his bloodstream. Thanks Vlad.

The man grunts at him; a short, curt "hm" that shouldn't make Danny smile, but he does because he's somewhat delirious and probably concussed. The man keeps some kind of distance, sinking towards the shadows of Gotham's alleyway like he dares to melt right into it.

If it's supposed to scare Danny, it doesn't work. Danny's never been afraid of the dark; he's always been able to hide himself in it. He blinks slowly at the mass of shadows.

"You look hurt." The shadows says, blurring together around the edges. Danny squints, and licks his lips to get the blood dripping down his chin off. Ugh, he hates the taste of blood.

"I am." He says, "My godfather poisoned me. M'dying." The agony of the blood blossom eating him from the inside out looped back around to numbing a while ago, so all he feels is half-awake and dazed.

"Hey," Danny stumbles forward towards the man, a bloodied hand reaching out to him. "You-- you're a hero, right? You're not attacking me; which is more than I can say for most costumed people I've met." Maybe it's a poor bar to judge someone at, but he's already established that Danny's not in his right mind.

The man makes no change in expression, but Danny realizes blearily that it's hard to tell with the shadows on his face. He stays still long enough for Danny to latch onto the cape -- stretchy, but almost soft under his fingers.

He looks up blearily into the whites of the man's eyes. "Can you help me? I don't-- I don't wanna die." Again. He doesn't wanna die again. He blinks slow and lizard-like. "I mean- I'll probably get to see mom and dad again, but I told them I'd at least try and make it to adulthood."

There's a clatter down the street, and Danny's ghost sense chills up his spine and leaves a bitter, ashy taste in his mouth. He immediately knows who it belongs to even before the deceptively gentle; "Daniel?" echoes down the way.

"Daniel? Quit your games, badger, Gotham is dangerous for children."

Danny's mouth pulls back, and blood spills against his tongue. "Please." He rasps, and grabs onto the shadow's cape with both hands. "Please. He's going to kill me. Please--"

"Daniel? Is that you?"

His lips part, dragging in air to plead with the darkness again. He doesn't need to, the whites of his eyes narrow, and the cape whirls around him before Danny can blink. Soon swaddled in shadows, the Night lifts him up, and steals him away.

So, I have an idea to contribute to the anger management brainrot:

I know how we all say that Jason's pit madness is just corrupted ectoplasem, BUT! hear me out, what if the pit madness is the result of his body coming back, and his spirit/soul being still (at least partially) trapped in the infinite realms?

Add a dash of Good BatDad!Bruce to this AU, and he tries to help Jason by doing a ritual to free Jason's soul from the ghost king. Only problem is, Batman CAN do magic, he's just generally very bad at it and too stubborn to admit it or call Zatana for help in most cases (Yes, this part is actually DC cannon) . So the ritual works- technically. Jason gets his soul back, but by obscure infinite realms law, he's now "bound to the ghost princess", which is a fancy way to say that Jason and Jazz are now betrothed.

But! Here's the real kicker: neither Jason nor Jazz have met yet. They both get "rashes" (actually marks symbolizing their union) on their ring fingers, and are frustrated that no amount of skincare will cure them. It can even start off with neither of them realizing that they're engaged. Jazz is just wildly confused when ghosts keep asking her when the wedding is, because she isn't even dating anyone, and hasn't really felt attraction to anyone since Johnny.

Jason, on the other hand, thinks he's been cursed. His liminality is flaring up with a vengeance. Randomly he's been passing through objects, turning invisible, all sorts of out of control ghost hijinks. He has his soul back, he just wants to move on and be with his family, make up for lost time. After Bruce losing more hours of sleep over research than should be humanly possible over research, they find out the truth. Jason is horrified. He thinks that whoever the "ghost princess" is, she must be a spooky monster.

The bats try to correct the situation, and immediately attempt to summon the ghost king. They beg and plead with him to remove the betrothal. Danny, being a little chaos gremlin says that he won't, his sister will have to decide for herself.

I loooooooooove funny arranged married shenanigans 🥰🥰🥰

Also I think it's hilarious if Bruce is the one that fuck things up because he doesn't want to call for help

At least after everything is said and done, and everyone can look back and laugh, he could joke that he is a matchmaker

Also I would love Danny being pissed off at being summoned, again, and this summon is so sloppy and shitty he expects some kids joking around and trying to be edgy-

and its freaking BATMAN?

and as they explain what's going on he starts laughing and he is like "im sorry, this is very serious, but my sister, the princess, can and will fuck you up for this"

-> cue everyone thinking this princess is as jacked and tall and eldritch as Danny

So Danny goes fetch her and batfam like "okay, game plan, once she is here he try to apologize and beg to not be smited-"

And then the princess arrives, she is a 7 feet tall Tired(tm) goddess that looks so pissed off-

And then she sees her betrothed

Ooh, btw do you know DexDefyingStunts on AO3? I was rereading their soft and sweet series and like. I desperately need your thoughts on that, and maybe how delightful it would be to have canon bats in that AU in a dimension travel situation (since you love that trope too). Just the BadWrongSick sensation the canon bats have in that 'verse against the public acceptance of sex and how fully integrated it is in the world and public compared to their home reality where sex and anything pertaining to it mostly taboo outside of private situations. Also I just love image of soft batdad gently finger fucking his darling son Tim right infront of his alternate dimension guests and the utter horror and clash of what is effectively alien biology. Sorry, I'm just stressed, pls ignore me if this isn't something you've read/are into.

but aside from that i do have some burgeoning ideas for brutim like how even before they get together, tim served as bruce's "voice" in a sense. as brucie bruce can't really speak his mind so tim does it for him <3. rejecting more alcoholic drinks because he's had enough. another thing is when they go out to a new restaurant and he orders for bruce because he has a habit of ordering things he thinks sound good but he won't like (so tim goes a few days early to try everything and scope out what bruce will enjoy).

tim just being overall very thoughtful and mindful towards bruce and his comfort which is what catches bruce's attention. tim knows that when bruce is in a slump or unhappy, or angry he can't make him feel less of those things so instead he does his best to make sure that bruce is at ease so he can work through those feelings.

tim just being the most considerate person in bruce's life and bruce falling for it ❤️❤️❤️❤️

and YES!! im a HUGE fan of dexdefyingstunts their tim fics are absolutely IMPECCABLE!!!!! and their soft and sweet series!!!!! just the overall tenderness present within a universe where its normalized for omegas to be “taken care of” by their packs! like its the perfect balance between gentle love and explicitness!! you can see in their actions and words that the alphas just want to help out their lovely little omegas that can’t help their biology <333!

BUT then adding in dimension travel!!!!! oh i cannot stress how much i LOVE that trope!!!! the canon bats and their purely platonic or familial dynamics being confronted with this- like to them so many things would be wrong, to them it’s be like ‘oh this is like a BAD universe, we’re not evil but everything else is just pretty shitty’. i love the contrast and drama brought about by their discomfort and how everything they stand for and believe says they need to put a stop to this, they need to save who they think are the victims. but this isn’t their universe and the general rule set up by the justice league is that unless another universe is an active threat to their own, it’s best if things be left alone.

but they’re still not happy because the canon bats are now sitting in a world so much like their own but with some pretty significant biological and societal differences. anything related to sex is hidden away and private

“so it’s shameful to you” they ask. a version of tim is in front of them so soft, so...young. they’re desperatly trying to ignore how they can see the red seam of his pussy where fingers are stuffed inside. the batman from this universe is casually speaking to them while his lap is occupied by a red-faced and panting tim. there is no indication that the action is forced.

if it was there’s not a single bat that would’ve stayed still but they don’t want another incident like what occurred when they first arrived. 

the sight of tim laid on on the mats, pants completely gone leaving him naked below as this bruce stuffed another finger into him, garnering a fresh flow of tears from his crying face.

to them it’d been clear what was happening. they reacted as they would’ve to the sight of an adult hovering over a child and touching them in an inappropriate manner.

“inappropriate?” this batman asks. “how is it inappropriate to alleviate a young omega’s suffering? do you know the health risks of an omega going their entire childhood without this kind of assistance? it could cause delays in puberty, contribute to an increased chance for depression and anxiety-”

realistically this batman could be lying. he could be just a perverse man who’s twisted this tim’s mind to believe that he needs this. he could be trying to twist their minds to make them think it’s alright. 

even while researching this universe they find information that corroborates this batman’s words. their are medical and pediatric journals published about what this batman is doing. 

they try to argue, point out facts about tim’s age, about how even in this universe his brain isn’t finished developing until he’s in his early 20s. there’s no way he’s mature enough to understand this. but this tim protests, saying he’s plenty mature and he can make as many choices as any omega!

it’s uncomfortable for them, not just because of the actions but because that’s their faces.

how can dick ever look at tim and bruce together again and not think of the sight of bruce fingerbanging tim who looked all of 13 years old.

bruce is also uncomfortable but for different reasons. he’s met other versions of himself. good, evil, neither, and something in between. bruce knows that just because he became a different person in another universe, it doesn’t necessarily indicate anything about him or his life.

but this batman...he can see the tenderness. the love in his eyes when he kisses his tim (on the mouth). there’s a gentle, parental air about him that contrasts so sharply with the image projected in front of them.

they’re all uncomfortable, the sight and being in that universe just messes with their heads.

tim, surprisingly, takes it the easiest. he can always reason himself into accepting anything. dick questions him on it when they’re back because they all see how bruce hasn’t made much of an effort to touch tim since they returned. no pats on the back no, small smiles. just an odd distance between them. it makes tim sad but he gets it, he tells as much to dick who’s still trying to process it all.

“aren’t you weirded out?” dick asks. “i mean that universe was kind of...intense.”

that’s a nice way of putting it. immediately after they returned they each drifted to their own corner of the manor and didn’t even look at each other until dinner.

but tim just shakes his head. 

“my parents were anthropologists, dick.” 

tim’s mom and dad always liked collecting artifacts more than they liked business meetings. it was their passion and when they were home they’d show tim some new piece they were adding to their collection. they liked to talk about it at the dinner table so tim picked up on those conversations.

“there’s this thing in anthropology when you’re studying a different culture, community that sort of thing. when you’re doing that you run the risk of finding something that clashes with what has been established in your culture as moral.”

adults fucking children, touching them intimately. it’s all around pretty firmly established as something very bad. yet in that universe, it was fine. encouraged even.

but it’s still immoral.

by their standards.

“when observing other cultures you can only determine or call something immoral so long as that society enforces that it’s unacceptable. if they don’t...well...”

tim remembers being nine years old and listening to his dad talk about the sambia of papa new guinea where boys his age are taken from their mothers and enter initiations to become men. initiations that could have people clutching their pearls and gasping at how “savage” they are.

“there are things in our world that are probably seen as immoral and grotesque not just by western sensibilities and standards but for other universes too.”

dick’s forehead is still creased, he’s biting his bottom lip. tim tells him about young boys who live in a culture that believes that to become a man you must undergo certain rites. rites like performing fellatio on older men in their tribe and being encouraged to drink the semen as often as possible in order to be virile. he tells about how anthropologists like his parents studied and asked the boys about what the most terrifying part of the rites were, and those boys who they expected to say some variation related to the sexual abuse- they said it was being ripped from the arms of their mother. 

to those boys, to those men, to that tribe, and in that culture. there was nothing sexual about the act. it was not an act of pleasure but one of duty.

that baman. that tim drake. 

it was simply a father caring for his beloved little child

“i do get it dick. those were our faces, that was us in another life but....but it’s not like we were the ones doing it.”

rather, shouldn’t they be happy to know that the tim from that universe was so clearly cared for and loved?

dick’s expression wasn’t satisfied, his eyes kept darting. and tim saw the brief flash on his face of disbelief.

tim decided to just leave it at that.

it’s not that dick was close minded. tim knew that but still...

sometimes he thought of that tim. thought of his blushy cheeks and his sweet smiles and how he clung to that bruce and that bruce clung to him back.

he thought of himself at that age. just as small but three times as desperate for his parent’s love.

it was weird. tim knew that but still...they seemed happy.

and didn’t that matter so much more?

so im not the BEST painter + ive never drawn actual birds before BUT

ive been reading "The Birds" by @oceanera12 and it's so good!! Genuinely one of my favourite AUs and fics I've read & has certainly been getting me through my breaks at work. it's not the greatest painting but i Absolutely had to create SOMETHING in honor of these boys and their accidentally overprotective batdad. so... derpy little birds and the batshape!! yeah
