Steven Wright’s short film ‘The Appointments of Dennis Jennings’ (1988). Watched this again for my 30th birthday ‘24. Here is my review from last year:
I have… feelings about Steven Wright’s works. I don’t know the man, and it’s not like I feel I do - especially when I hear him nowadays on radio shows going off about cancel culture’ and his shitty friends Chapelle and Louis CK - but his work has inspired in me my own desire to write and my desire to stop viewing the way my brain works as a malfunction. I have a learning disability that kept me afraid to be a writer for years. He talked openly about his process for writing and ideas. “It comes like rain”, he said - a little, then a lot, then a little, then nothing, nothing - then a downpour. I keep that with me.
The guy, for whatever reason unknown to me, really knows how to illustrate the surreal and often absurd experience(s) of those of us with neurodivergence and obsessive tendencies. We have big imaginations, and we get lost in them. We need our own specific routines, our own personal concoctions of ‘self-regulatory’ stimuli. We see patterns - or wait, we think we did, so let’s examine — I might be late for work but let’s examine, I need this. It’s hard to change tasks. It’s hard to remember yesterday… but we remember the October of the year we turned 24 and how the air smelled and what sweater we kept wearing over and over that we haven’t really worn in a while since, and why not, where is that sweater oh god I hope I still have it I loved that sweater, it’s probably in that one box inside that one suitcase up inside the closet underneath the other box full of psychiatric receipts and medical paperwork from the year we turned 27. Yes. Here it is. Shit it’s been 3 hours?
We overthink the curve of a soup spoon at our dinner table as the glaringly obvious flies over our heads, a distant jet plane. People don’t realize we can see the jet plane, carving convex or concave, right off the reflection in the silverware. We approach the side door comfortably cause we never really could find the front door in — and hey, it still gets us inside, so?
So. We are preyed on. Treated like it’s all wrong. And lots of us are seeking to really know. Who am I to say I’m fine? (Oh don’t even go there, it lets them in!)
Years and years going thru the process of psychiatric treatment is what made this short film so funny to me; yes it depicts fairly literally a common experience with psychiatry when you’re just a waiter at a restaurant trying to figure yourself out. The paranoia we feel in life (and the doc insists this moreso with his actions, things he does not say) is of our individual insanity, and yet the evidence of his direct hand in our paranoia surrounds us like suspicious bread crumbs. Or neckties (?).
We aren’t wrong for noticing the crumbs on their laps, going off on long thought trails, trying to figure out what it was they were eating for lunch that day. When we notice a pattern, it gives us a chill. Much to think about. Yet we’re supposed to carry on with the treatment, put our trust in his hands, so don’t get too lost in thought. You’re paying thru the nose for only an hour!
Sometimes it makes us feel like an ugly bug in a glass case, there for someone wealthier and more ‘academic’ than us to dissect. Sometimes the “ills” we experience are manufactured by those in place to heal us (and even to govern us), for a regular hefty fee got by weeks of saving tips and serving tables. It reminds me of symbiosis. It’s not so far-fetched to suggest it ain’t wrong to feel a lil paranoid of your psychiatrist when you tell them about your specific experiences in life, your day-to-day symptoms, and they pull out that damn DSM-♾️, search thru it like it’s the yellow pages, and ultimately conclude: no, sorry, nothing here for someone like you.
Their finger is hovering over that secret red button that summons the cops while they say “this is a safe space to talk it through”.
And finally, when you’re done — you’re really pushed over the edge with it all — and you say “Fuck this industry, it’s ruined my life!” and you have an “ugly” reaction, an episode, an event, you get angry, where do we often end up for this ‘disturbance’?
Incarcerated. And you see that the patterns are pretty much the same in prison as they are in involuntary hospitalization as they are in the every day systems we are meant to survive without making a fuss. Maybe some of us are expected to die, I don’t know.
And maybe there will be a new entry in the DSM next year. It’s so interesting.

hi hello this is your reminder that google are hypocrites(and bds)
the lay offs were on the 18th this month, pretending to celebrate a native culture as you help the military that is actively ethnically cleansing them, and has been for years, is highly hypocritical and just an attempt to save face
in case someone forgot, google is on BDS' "pressure" list, which means it isn't necessary a 100% boycott but rather a target for pressuring and limiting your use of their services to push them towards cutting ties with israel
additional context on dabka:
it is a folk dance from levantine countries like lebanon, jordan, syria, and palestine. with possible origins in ancient phoenician and/or canaanite cultures

being in the supernatural fandom is like being in a school where the lights flicker every day, and whenever they go out for a second half the kids scream bloody murder and the other half roll their eyes, and then the lights come back on and everything's fine. but one day... one day the lights are going to go out. and when they come back. there will be a season 16 announcement
