Also how many folks grew up with guardian figures who were not actually the best at cooking. How many pre-made, pre-packaged TV dinners were eaten as a kid? Or basing the dislike of certain foods because they were first or only exposed to them in institutional cafeteria mass-produced situations, like school lunches. I've had friends who swore they hated certain foods try them properly made as adults and are shocked at the differences in experience.

Kids are more sensitive to foods, which is a good thing as small children also tend to put a lot of things in their mouths - it's a biological safety precaution! But as OP says, tastes alter and change (barring actual allergies, food sensitivities, responses to other factors like texture, etc), and keep doing so as we age. I hated sauerkraut as a kid, couldn't stand anything even touched by it - but as an adult Reubens are one of my favorite sandwiches.

Try things (so long as it's medically safe for you). See if your tastes have altered, and/or if it's a difference in how something is prepared now by someone knowing what they're doing, as opposed to a tired parent who maybe wasn't so talented in the kitchen as we thought they were when young.

My 30-something wisdom is that your palate is constantly changing so don't assume because you hated a food 10 or 20 years ago you still will. Most radically, your taste as a little kid is not indicative of what it will be as an adult-- I've known too many adults who still refuse to eat anything but chicken strips and ketchup because they're still basing their taste on what they experienced at 8 years old and so have cut themselves off from the entire world of adult taste. In my case, my taste for savory foods, especially vegetable dishes, "bitter" foods, and more complex flavor combinations has really expanded. I didn't like mushrooms as a child or for most of my 20s, but around 28 suddenly they worked for me. I started enjoying dark chocolate around 25, especially paired with fruit flavors. I've never been hugely fond of eggplant but discovered that in a sauce or roasted in butter and oil its delicious. I've always enjoyed fish but in the last 15 years I've discovered a passion for it, salmon especially. I've learned to recognize the tastes of herbs and love putting them into everything I can (currently I'm most enthusiastic about dill.) I'm also suddenly crazy about all kinds of sandwiches. And I'm still trying olives every couple years in case suddenly they start working for me, though sadly no luck on that front yet. So basically, expect that your taste is going to change in adulthood and expect that it will keep changing. And you can also work to develop your palate by exposing yourself to new flavors and combinations and cuisines, opening you up to even more foods you might never have liked before. So keep trying new and old foods, because you never know when you might suddenly start liking something new or discover a new way it can be prepared or a new texture it can come in. Don't wind up imprisoned in a world of chicken strips just because you haven't tried anything else since 3rd grade, you deserve better.

The Summer had something good about it, everything was bright and warm, the plants were blooming and, above all, there was ice cream in abundance for everyone, young and old alike, everyone liked it.

This also applied to the residents of the Summer Camp... well, at least that was the plan, to make homemade ice cream from berries and fruits.

A natural ice cream, as Jason had called it, but a glance at the twenty-year-old ice cream machine made the teenagers groan.

Holes and moldy were more the terms that described the once expensive machine, it was now nothing more than a nest for spiders and rats, but it wouldn't make ice cream.

So the idea had to be discarded and the kids were satisfied with lukewarm sliced watermelon and medium-cold water, which they took with them into the huts.

,,We'll wait outside in case you need us!” Jason had shouted, but by then they had already slammed the door in his face, leaving the two adults outside together alone.

It wasn't the first time that they had found themselves alone together out here; there were far too many days when the teenagers wanted to stay together as a group.

The two 'groups' rarely interacted, and when they did, it was only for dinner.

Which is why, especially in the last few days when the sun was particularly strong, the teenagers separated from the adults. Her gaze fell on him again, that confused, sweet expression on his face as he didn't quite know what to do.

Instead, she laid a towel on the wooden dock, put her things next to it, and took off her shorts and T-shirt to jump into the lake in her bikini.

The cool water was a welcome relief on her heated skin, letting herself glide like a starfish or pulling through the water like a frog was so much better than staying in the stuffy hut, the fans were just like everything else here and all that would happen is hot air.

She didn't see the person she had been watching for minutes, didn't see Jason walking along the meadow and the dock, watching her every swim and drift on the water.

How he tried not to look too obviously at her breasts or ass whenever she let herself drift or turned around, the light material of the fabric hiding her most intimate parts, and yet she was the most beautiful mermaid he had ever seen.

The rustling of the towel drying and the soft sound of the drops dripping onto the wooden walkway was almost mechanical. ,,So quiet today? Hmmm, no lecture about insects or camp rules?” her question sounded almost disappointed as she lay down on the towel and enjoyed the sun a little.

Jason saw how the sun almost made the water droplets on her hat glisten, pretty, peaceful and definitely soft and warm. He was sure that she was warm and soft too; someone nice and pretty just had to be.

She was always too cheerful, didn't treat him like a weird settler like almost everyone else, and she had a good connection with the teenagers.

The minutes passed by but soon he saw her move again and reach into the small bag for the sunscreen. The tube showed orange and sun, not quite the picture she had here, but enough,

,,Jason darling... would you put sun cream on my back, please?” she asked, holding out the bottle to him.

A question that almost made him choke on his own spit, his hands on her, he would touch her, hold her and, above all, feel her.

He thought he felt her heartbeat, calm and happy whenever he ran his hands over her shoulders, his cheeks burning as he ran further down and lightly touched her hip, only to quickly move back up again.

The thought of simply grabbing her like that was clear, but this 'dominance' was always transformed into his own submission.

He was not one of those soccer or sports fanatics who knew what they were doing; he was a nervous, friendly young man whose interests were perhaps a little unusual, but his love and lust were as normal as anyone else's.

But she, she seemed like a goddess he would have done anything to touch her and now he did it, massaged her and received a few gentle, pleasant sounds... a dream come true.

A dream that lasted only a few minutes but a dream he would store forever, or at least until tonight when he disappeared into the shower alone to get relief.

But all good things come to an end and when he had covered her entire back with cream, he said, ,,I'm done” and she uttered a moaning, ,,Thank you, Jason,” and gave him a grateful glance before dozing off again, seemingly at peace.

More panicked than aroused, he fumbled around a bit nervously before just shouting, ,,I'm cooling down!” and jumping into the lake with his clothes on, the last thing he wanted was for her to think of him as a creepy loser just because he had touched a woman.

But when the water surrounded him, pleasantly cooling him, he didn't see the knowing smile that appeared on her lips as she looked at the merman, hoping that he would also let her get close to him.

The sun always had something good to offer, besides warmth and beauty, it especially brought people together.

I think my whole issue with "parents just need to parent better" is because it's quite literally impossible to avoid or predict sometimes. GOOGLE isn't a safe webpage if you scroll far enough, even with safe browsing on. As a nine year old little girl in 2012 I shouldn't have been exposed to horse guts and horse pussy on the first page of google images sitting directly in front of my mother because I had the gall to... look up the names of my favorite my little pony characters? How on earth was anyone meant to predict that there was going to be something I shouldn't have been exposed to under that?

With how much blame people want to put on the kid or the parents, genuinely how are they supposed to avoid this? When do we reach the point that people try to say minors shouldn't be on the internet at all?

That is why it's vital the children have an adult they feel safe talking to whenever they see something distressing on the internet. Because, unfortunately, the internet will likely never be a safe place for minors. Especially very young minors. Even if every adult posting smut puts the appropriate warnings and shields on what they create, there will always be things that get past the filters. And it sucks, but it's reality.

Hello lovely! No problem, sorry for the delay but here's a tutorial :) ⬇️

For anyone curious, anon is referring to my 'gameplay rules' page for this ask!

Important Note: Since I installed LazyDuchess's Random Sim Fixes this method isn't really an essential for me anymore, as pudding face is no longer an issue (which was my main reason for doing this in the first place) - however, making a note of an adopted sim's bio parents can still be quite a fun way to enhance your gameplay, as you can create storylines where they meet their bio parents later in life etc. So I do still prefer it over adopted sims just spawning in w. no previous family relations lol

To get started, you’re going to need Nraas Master Controller to follow this (here’s a tutorial for how to install mods if you’re new to TS3)

Adopt the new addition to the family as you normally would - this sim can be any age or gender

Once the adopted child arrives on your lot, click on them, bring up the NRAAS menu, then follow this string:

Nraas -> MasterController -> Advanced -> Play with Genetics

This is now going to bring up a big menu where you're selecting the parents for the sim - you can select from any sim in town by choosing '(Test Full Family)', however I like to use townies because they usually have no other relations - if you're selecting from the whole town I still recommend filtering by age using the 'Type of Sim (and)' menu detailed below:

You can choose one of the other options, or to only bring up a list of townies, choose:

Type of sim (and) -> 'Homeless Non Service'

This is going to bring up a huge list of townies, I literally just close my eyes and scroll my mouse around a bit to pick one 'randomly' but you could also use a random number generator or something similar if you wanted to!

You're then going to be brought to a little screen where it shows the two chosen parents & your adopted sim - just like if you were creating a child of two parents in CAS

Randomize the genetics however many times you wish to get the outcome you want

It's worth noting that altering the 'age' of the sim on this menu has no affect on them in-game, so if you want you can randomize the genetics w. the sim as a young adult to see what they're going to look like when they get older

When you're happy, press the 'tick' button to accept the changes

It might take a second in-game to load up the changes, but your adopted sim should now have the genetics of the two townies you'd chosen!

The only thing it won't change is the hair colour - so make sure you make a note of what the hair colour you want for them is and change it in CAS

I'd recommend making a note of the parents somewhere, so if you do want to incorporate them into your story at a later date you can do so

Talking to @cantgetworsethanthistbh made me think of an AU in which Stanley fails to truly act as Ford in their twin swap.

What I always found interesting in this scene is that Stan, pretending to be Ford, wisely included himself in the group of people his brother would sacrifice the world for:

And that was puzzling for me at first, given how I think Stan saw their relationship before losing his memories. It might have been because 1) Ford himself told Stan that the deal was the only way to keep Stan and the kids safe, and Stan remembered that, 2) Ford told Stan exactly what to say, word for word, or 3) Ford’s hero complex was obvious to Stan. Of course his heroic, noble brother would ask for the safety of everyone in his family. (That’s not the true reason, but from Stan’s POV it might as well be.)

But notice how Bill’s eye follows and focuses on “Stan” as “Ford” points at him. Notice how quickly Bill agrees to this.

“Fine.” A single word. Nothing else. No teasing, no mocking. From the same insane triangle that was delighting himself in the Stan twins’ apparent fight, just a few seconds before. “Oh, even when you’re about to die, you Pines twins just can’t get along!”

Bill knows exactly how much Stan matters to Ford, even if the Stans were at each other’s throats. I mean, at this point you guys guys might be tired of this excerpt, but this happened while Ford was still holding a grudge against Stan:

And what I always loved about this scene is that Bill turned everyone into tapestry, including even Fiddleford (whom we know Ford cares a lot about!) but forced himself to spare Stan and the kids and place them inside the cages, even though they didn’t know the equation and would have zero usefulness to him. That could only be because he thought he could use them against Ford, so Stan was obviously included for that very purpose.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if Stan-as-Ford forgot to mention himself, mentioning only the young twins (because that would be Ford’s focus, anyway, they were children), or worse, made an active choice not to include himself because he thought it would be more believable given his tumultuous relationship with Ford... and that made Bill recognize him as Stan?

Just imagine it. Stan says something along the lines of, ���My only condition is that you at least let the kids go! My brother and I are adults and can handle this, but they’re just kids, please! Pick on someone your own size!” Ford goes pale in the background as Bill starts to laugh. No way the true Ford would’ve missed an opportunity to protect Stan.

As a nonbinary⁠ and queer⁠-led organization, whose team is mostly queer, trans and gender-expansive people, and who has existed to serve and support marginalized young people from the start — and through several terrible administrations over the last 26 years — we’ve certainly been struggling with all of this, too. Suffice it to say, as is the case for some of us, what’s being said and what they are trying to do around transness may not be the only arena in which you feel vulnerable, attacked or targeted: you may also be having these feelings as an intersex⁠ person, a disabled person, as an immigrant, as a Black or brown person, an Arab person or more. I just wanted to remind you that even when we share these hard times, we still show up at Scarleteen every single day with the aim of being here to help inform and support you as best we can.  You can rest assured that we are paying close attention to all of these developments so that we can inform you about any policy changes you’ll need to know about and help you as best we can. That aside, reading Fellowship at 11 *after* reading EotW is pretty intense. 6th grade or so? Huh. I probably could have pulled it off, but I wasn't reading fiction at that level by then. Probably Niven was the hardest stuff I had read... didn't read LotR or Dune until... 8th grade I think (my brother read those in 5th or 6th, following me but I know he struggled with them (I mean I struggled with Dune, so)). Or maybe I was in first year of HS even?

I did read the adult book "Digging Dinosaurs" by Jack Horner when I was in 4th grade though, and was reading some Time-Life (I think?) books about physics and cosmology in 5th/6th. I wish I had encountered WoT anywhere near so young, I didn't find it until I was early/mid 20s? Probably early, I think I had to wait for CoT (2003) to come out (such a relieve after WH and PoD, what a slog)

Calling EotW a LotR knockoff is funny though. Like yeah, there are some overall structural similarities - small group from backwater has no idea what is going on, Gandalf figure, cursed object... But also pretty general tropes, and especially leaning on Hero's Journey (monomyth is silly but it is somewhat common and probably moreso since Campbell). And some explicit references (what's in his pocket?), but really not that similar. And anyone with eyes could see it was to pull in as many fantasy readers as possible with a familiar setup, before doing his own thing. Especially after 1990 when TGH came out.

I actually really love when people try to call Eye of the World a LotR knockoff in like a disparaging or dismissive way, because nothing has ever been so disappointing to me than starting LotR for the first time at 11 years old after reading WoT and expecting WoT “but better!!” and being stuck with Tom fucking Bombadil for an eternity

The Batman fandom infantilizing a near 30 years old white man taking in a child, saying he was a brother more than a father as if he wasn't a full grown adult taking in a child he could have birthed, but parentifying a brown young adult taking in his brother pre-teen for less than a year, saying he was a father more than a brother (only a year is barely enough but ok), or saying he was more a father to his other brothers than Bruce, when he met them when he was 18 and 21 is making me uncomfortable, ngl.

Like, Bruce is a "kid" when he became Dick's guardian when he canonically was over 25 (he started being Batman at 25), and a brother to him when he raised him for 10 years (and Dick probably has not many memories from before Bruce now), but Dick is a "father" to Damian he only had as his charge for less than a year, half of which they were fighting each others??? Make it make sense???

Where the Justice League (mostly focusing on the Superfam or Batfam or Flashfam) are large leviathan-esque creatures living on Planet 4546B. Maybe they can change forms due to Precursor experimentation, maybe not. Those with young hang out around the shallows more than the others, what with most of them being large super or specialized predators.

Enter Danny Fenton, interning on the Aurora when the ship is shot down by the Quarantine Enforcement Platform. Oh sure he probably would have tried to stop the destruction and help, but his ghost powers are a bit on the fritz and a well-meaning worker pushes him into one of the last life pods seeing as he's a child.

Now the leviathans may not know what a ship is exactly, but they can definitely understand that in most cases things technology = precursors. As far as they understand, a metal deathtrap not unlike the old labs or caches fell alongside several metallic eggs, with the emerging hatchlings misshapen and not living long.

But then there's the egg that landed in the shallows, which at first they thought was empty. But a hatchling- much smaller than the previous ones- emerges, a day later than the rest, but they're alive even if their swimming is all wobbly! It's so tiny, and obviously hatched too early with the strange split tail and how it keeps swimming to the surface for air, and they have to protect it! Now if only the little hatchling would answer their calls and not dart into hiding spots whenever they approach...

Honestly this is up to the writer lol, but I like to think that Danny's ghost form, when he finally manages to achieve it again, goes a little naga-esque. Almost like a sea snake instead of just a whispy ghost tail, which while better for swimming doesn't help his freak out over most ghost powers still not working.

Danny is just trying to survive man, maybe find other survivors, turn off this big alien gun, stop creating frost crystals when he sneezes, the usual. He doesn't need giant humanoid-esque leviathan-sized sea creatures poking around!

first time i watched 'no exit' i was 100% in jo's corner like oh great it's sexist dean time . wheeee let's all watch her learn a lesson about hunting and he can be 'right' in a factual way but he'll be as obnoxious as possible about it the whole time . now i think what's happening here is that he has pretty much instantly samzoned her, as a college dropout from a hunting family who has a contentious relationship with her one surviving parent. EXCEPT that she's a five-foot-something twiggy barely-out-of-her-teens woman who has a crush on him and has never been on a serious hunt before, and he's dismissive/over-vigilant enough with the actual sam, a powerfully-built man with clairvoyant powers and over a decade of experience. bearing that in mind, his behavior towards jo is barely outside his normal realm of bossy and overbearing, and since he knows a little something about how sams will respond to direct orders, he still tells her mother she's not on the hunt with them so as to avoid the fallout until it's over. basically i think the whole dean thing, his most consistent characterization over the course of fifteen years, is his tendency to express even genuine protectiveness through the medium of 'bossy older sibling', and this makes him come off like the worst person on the planet. he frequently IS, but it's actually because of other things and has nothing to do with that habit in specific
