Every time I see news of crowds agitating against Israel outside a synagogue, or museum, or Jewish day school full of children, or restaurant, or educational event, and so on in the US, every time my thought is why the fuck aren't you holding this 'protest' at city hall? Or your state legislature? Or your federal reps' offices?
A random Jewish institution in the United States has absolutely zero power to affect the decisions made by Israel's parliament or military. You're not "raising awareness" or "drawing attention to the issue" because the general public of the US is already at least somewhat aware thanks to the news, and Jewish people are in fact one of the groups in the US to be the most fucking aware of what's going on.
If you are upset by US military aid going to Israel, you need to convince your federal representatives to change that. Those reps do not base US military foreign aid policy on random US citizens harassing other US citizens.
If you want the US to provide more civilian relief in the form of food, medicine, or helping refugees come here, you need to convince reps at every level. Can your city partner with a refugee organization to arrange housing? Can your governor arrange scholarships or exchange programs to state universities? Can the feds channel more funds to Doctors Without Borders?
Do a write and call-in campaign. Hold your protest at legislatures. File a petition. Do something to directly express your desires to the elected officials who have a direct say in policy.
We've held protests at city halls and state legislatures and federal buildings for centuries. Why aren't you doing so for this issue?
Why are you macing people attending synagogue? They have no more power over elected officials' choices than you do.
Why are you screaming at schoolchildren? They have less power over elected officials' choices than you do.
Why are you blocking entrance to a museum? Hold a fundraiser to build your own, if you want to educate people so badly!
I know the antisemites don't actually care about US military & foreign aid policy. I know the racists are simply reveling in an excuse to whip up a mob to attack Jews. It's obvious.
But if you really, truly want to help the people of Gaza, you need to stop being part of that hateful mob, and organize your own, real political actions that directly engages with your elected representatives.
#antisemitism#activism#government policy#I/P#all of the examples are real yes including the fucking mace it happened in LA#DO YOU WANT TO HELP PEOPLE OR DO YOU WANT TO INDULGE IN HATRED#because you can't do both#anger can be channeled into something productive#hate just destroys#sidenote there are already many nongovernment organizations that help refugees and displaced people#so you can find them and assist them in their work#in addition to engaging with gov reps

Fight the nightmare government.
One of the interchangeable ghouls running in 2024 is talking up his plan to tie voting rights to passing a civics test & it's amazing watching people discuss this in neutral terms
A lot of the response to this is "oh, that's great, next let's restore civics education in schools", but the entire point is that they're not going to improve civics education. The age range gives a hint: this is a ploy to disenfranchise young voters, by, presumably, demanding they pass a test the state won't train them for in order to get rights granted by the states. It's like saying "oh, yes, literacy tests for voting makes sense, it'll really inspire the South to educate black people". It uh. Didn't. And I think many of the people agreeing know that and support it bc it's disenfranchising, but some seem to just agree bc it's "COMMON SENSE" and they're not digging any deeper?
This would be a civics test authored by a far right administration, to be clear. The tests we give immigrants are already propagandistic nonsense, imagine that in the hands of the "slavery taught people valuable skills" crowd
Also, his amendment would allow young people who can't pass the test to vote if they join the military. This is a "service guarantees citizenship" amendment
#i agree but im sorry last poster#technically that question is correct because the civil war was about state's rights#not even state's rights to have slaves#just in general#that was definitely a part of it#but the emancipation proclamation was half way through the war#and it wasn't conditional on the Union victory#it was just a government policy#and idealogically the civil war was 90% about slavery#but that was not the declaration nor the technical reason#still agree though this is absolute bias#the gov has been under preparing kids for government practice for yeeeaars#and they're not stopping any time soon

because there is nothing to lose the people saying biden should resign now so kamala can still be the first female president are absolutely right but why stop there? inauguration day is 70 days away let's make "president for a day" a real thing. say "fuck it we ARE going to do the arbitrary quota DEI bullshit you accuse us of" and speedrun first [category] presidents. revolving door type thing.
first female president. first openly gay president. first transgender president. first president who has been to space. first president gamer president. first mime president. just play president bingo and hit as many categories as possible while we still can. make all of trump's #47 merch unusable by forcing him to be the 115th president instead. who cares anymore let's peacefully transition power but do it in the most chaotic hot-potato way possible
#us politics#politics tw#election 2024#joe biden#kamala harris#this is how bernie can still win!!!#like fuck it even let hillary have it for a day since she wanted it so freakin bad#each person pardons the one before and half the action is just pardons#if they're gonna dismantle the justice system as well as all the other systems of government just preemptively pardon anyone#if there's a policy that really needs to get passed just do executive order chain where each new person goes 'ditto'#make everything so frickin complicated to untangle that the trump admin has to spend the first 100 days#just sorting through paperwork#maybe malicious compliance and bureaucracy was the answer all along#'i guess you guys wanna do autocracy but we're gonna make it really irritating for you'

I mean I've said this before but there is no amount of tax incentives/cheaper housing and childcare/direct payments from the government to parents/etc that would make me want to have children and I think I'm far from alone here
#i just have a hard time treating declining birth rate as a serious problem#and an even harder time supporting any government policies that try to increase the birth rate#if anything we should be making it easier for people to be perpetually single imo

Fuck. We are in desperate need of genocide studies in the US. Because people are genuinely arguing that Nazism— and thus the white supremacy which inspired it— is an aberration of European philosophical tradition, rather than the end conclusion of “Western” ideologies.
“Nazism is uniquely evil” implies it cannot happen here and that it originally happened by freak happenstance. If you singularize the actions of the Nazis, you lose critical analysis of what ideas inspired them (see: US genocide of First Nations People) and how the Germans developed their tactics of oppression and murder (see: German genocide of the Herero and the Nama people between 1904-1908).
I believe it’s time we call this kind of rhetoric what it is: genocide denialism and Holocaust revisionism. It denies the European-created genocides before and after the Holocaust, and it rewrites the history leading up to the Holocaust to purposefully cover up the fact that it can and will happen here. Over and over and over. Such rhetoric also (purposefully) denies victims of genocides the world over solidarity with each other. To justify the destruction of Poland, Hitler asked, “Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?” Would you deny the son of a Shoah survivor the right to march with Armenians? Or would you, like the German state, accuse him of de-singularizing and relativizing the Holocaust and report him to the local antisemitism commissioner?
If you treat Nazism as unlike anything else that’s ever happened or will happen, then you don’t need to worry about it and the tragedies it created happening ever again. “Never again” becomes an empty promise. This type of rhetoric gives people the opportunity to wipe their hands of any culpability in the rise and reproduction of similar systems or other genocides, and they can use this singularity rhetoric to position themselves into a moral category despite supporting similar ideas. That Nazism and the Shoah happened means it was possible and still is possible, among any people.
The “massive, systematic, and efficient nature of” Nazi oppression, brutality, atrocity and its genocidal tactics and policies is a function of modernity and “Western” Enlightenment rationality. It is not an aberration.
#‘It’s not Nazism so it’s not immoral’#…doesn’t just lead to an uncritical analysis of genocidal rhetoric. policies. and tactics…#…it also leads to a watering down of Nazism and white supremacy…#…where people are drawn to glibly compare anything they consider immoral to Nazism.#see: ‘Godwin’s law’#If Nazism is to be considered an aberration…#…then we (purposefully) discourage people from seeing the victims of that evil in the suffering of others…#…so only ‘those victims’ have ever suffered and no one else has or can suffer.#Nations— like Germany— are using this logic to rewrite their history to deny their colonial genocides.#While nations like Poland and Ukraine are using this to paint themselves as heroes and saviors of the ‘ultimate victims’…#…thus ignoring the part their people and Governments played in the Genocide of the Jews.#genocide#antisemitism

"The division between the two families [the Woodvilles and the Nevilles] and their allies can be seen in the royal charters that they witnessed. Warwick, Rivers and Archbishop Neville of York, while serving as chancellor and afterwards, were fairly constant witnesses to royal charters and consequently often appeared together. This was not, however, the case for other family members and friends. From 1466 to 1469, if Scales or Woodville associates like Sir John Fogge, John Lord Audley or Humphrey Lord Stafford of Southwick witnessed royal charters, then members of the Neville group, such as John Neville, earl of Northumberland, or John Lord Wenlock would not, and vice versa. Discounting the ubiquitous Warwick, Rivers and Archbishop Neville, of the twenty-four charters issued between February 1466 and June 1469, twelve were witnessed by men associated with the Woodvilles, eight by men associated with the Nevilles and two were witnessed by no member of either group beyond the two earls at their heads and the archbishop; only two charters, both from 1466, featured associates of both families.
Such striking segregation of witnesses suggests that something more than simple convenience or availability was at play. [...] The evidence of these witness lists does show the extent of the split between the two groups from early in Edward's [first] reign and of the need for political society to work with that cleavage in the heart of the Yorkist regime."
— Theron Westervelt, "Royal charter witness lists and the politics of the reign of Edward IV"
*This is specifically applicable for Edward IV's first reign; in contrast, the charters in his second reign displayed a great deal of aristocratic and domestic unity and cohesion.
#the woodvilles#edward iv#wars of the roses#richard neville 16th earl of warwick#my post#elizabeth woodville#Obviously I hate the idea of Elizabeth and her family being seen as a social-climbing invasive species who banished the old nobility and#drove Warwick/Richard into rebellion and dominated the government and controlled the king and were responsible for Everything Wrong Ever#but I also dislike the 'revisionist' idea that they were ACTUALLY just passive and powerless bystanders or pawns who kept to their#social “place” (whatever the fuck that means). Frankly speaking this is more of a diminishment than a realistic defense.#the 'Queen's kin' (as they were known at the time) were very visible at court and demonstrably influential and prominent in politics#and as this shows there DOES seem to have been a genuine division/conflict between them and the Nevilles during Edward's first reign#(which DID directly lead to the decline of Neville dominance in England though the maintained honored positions and influence of their own)#Especially since Edward's second reign was entirely void of any such divisions - instead the nobility were united and focused on the King#even Clarence and Gloucester's long and disruptive quarrel over the Warwick inheritance never visibly left its mark on charters#so the Woodville/Neville divide from the 1460s must have been very sharp and divisive indeed#And yes it's safe to say that Elizabeth Woodville was probably involved: whether in her own right or via support of her family - or both -#it's illogical to argue that she was uninvolved (even the supportive Croyland Chronicle writes that Edward was too greatly influenced”#by her; she and her family worked together across the 1470s; she was the de-facto head in 1483; etc)#Enhanced by the fact that Elizabeth was the first Englishwoman to be crowned queen - meaning that the involvement of her#homeborn family marked the beginning of “a new and largely unprecedented factor in the English power structure” (Laynesmith)#This should be kept in mind when it comes to analyzing contemporary views of them and of Elizabeth's own anomalous position#HOWEVER understanding the complexity of the situation at hand doesn't mean accepting the traditionally vilified depiction of the Woodvilles#Warwick and the Nevilles remained empowered and (at least outwardly) respected by the regime#Whether he was driven by disagreements over foreign policy or jealousy or ambition - the decision to rebel was very much his own#Claiming that the Woodvilles were primarily responsible is ridiculous (and most of the nobility continued to support Edward regardless)#There's also the fact that Warwick took what was probably a basic factional divide and turned it into a misogynistic and classist narrative#of a transgressive “bad” woman who became queen through witchcraft and aggrandized a family of social-climbing “lessers” who replaced#the inherently more deserving old nobility and corrupted the realm - later revived and intensified by Richard III a decade later#ie: We can recognize their genuine division AND question the (false/unfair) problematic narrative around the Woodvilles. Nuance is the key.

*sees a long post from an American comparing Cardassia to the USSR/China* *rolls eyes and keeps scrolling*
#cipher talk#It's not that I think those are bad comparisons#It's that I don't trust white American liberals to make them and when yall do it tends to leave a bad taste in my mouth#Kinda veers into orientalism (and yes this is a factor in how Americans and Western Europe views Russia for shitty reasons)#As well as a weird fascination combined with loathing towards leftists that's just gross to be around#I don't even especially like the USSR or some of China's policies post revolution#Including the tendency some people have toward Han supremacy#But Cardassia is a Mish mash of whatever is scary to white progressive men in the 90s#And includes inspiration from the Ottoman British and Japanese empires as well as the Nazis who were Not Communists#So primarily analyzing Cardassia as a communist nation really is just. Foolish? Because they're also compared to fascists#Especially because we don't ACTUALLY know anything about Cardassian economics or much detail about politics#We know they venerate the family (which rings true for Chinese Japanese and Ottoman comparisons)#We know they have a military led ruling class that tries to balance with the Detapa council; military ruling class is not really like#A communist thing it's a dictatorship/authoritarian/fascist thing. A lot of African countries have or had those#Almost none of us are 'communist' in a meaningful way. At best Nasser was a socialist and that's not the same#And you can infer there's classism even from alpha Canon as well as food insecurity#If anything I think a pretty pressing comparison to Cardassia as a whole is they're Turks.#And even that is vague and stretches a bit because they weren't DESIGNED with that much intention#They were designed to be scary and not with a specific ideology and economic policy#If they were designed with such specifics by a politically informed person you would NOT have references to the Nazis alongside references#To communism because those two things are actually the opposite economic/political policy#And the ways they commit atrocities such as genocide or extend neocolonial influence aren't the same!#China for example has a VERY different stance to the US when it does that to the point where many Africans vastly prefer#To deal with Chinese companies because there's a material benefit from it even though Africans are often not getting a good deal#This doesn't make those dealings 'good' but it goes to show how just having a political history recently rooted in communism#Impacts how a government approaches things#Any government unfortunately is capable of genocide colonialism and imperialism. Resistance to those things is not simple.

Fiction
There's a specific arrangement in place to let police from England follow a stolen car across the Scottish border, yet I'm supposed to believe the Avengers can just turn up out of nowhere and start shooting their very-illegal-in-Scotland weapons in the middle of Edinburgh and there's no possible issue here?
#it's fiction but also... the MCU is imperialist propaganda isn't it? Captain America can do anything he wants in Scotland apparently!#because like the rest of the world Scotland is just a place for Americans to do whatever they want.#plus this movie is set when the UK (Westminster) government pretty much *was* embarking on a “cull the population” policy so...#i do enjoy some of these films but there's a character called CAPTAIN AMERICA in them ffs#i didnae vote for him did you?

It's wild how Kamala Harris's "crazy left-wing" down-payment support for first time buyers policy is literally existing government policy here in Ireland, brought in by our centre-right neoliberal political party. I've said it many times, but a lot of mainstream Democrats would be well at home in Fine Gael and that's not a compliment.
#it's also a bad policy#that essentially amounts to a government subsidy to DEVELOPERS#because it doesn't in itself increase the supply of housing#it just causes further price inflation because developers know every first time buyer now has an additional 25K or however much#and in the end#developers rake in more money#it costs the government loads of money#and housing remains unaffordable because it has does nothing to address the broken capitalist housing market#it's an incredibly neoliberal non-solution

"If enough of us vote third party for president, we could actually GET somewhere with our policy goals!"
Baby girl you can't even get a majority of third party/independents in a single state legislature. In the past 30 years there have been seven independent/third party state governors, and of those, only three were genuinely independent. The rest either got elected as a R/D and switched mid-term when they alienated themselves from their state party, got elected as I and then switched to R/D during their terms (with some of them having served the R/D parties before), or served as proxy candidates with heavy backing and support from one of the major two parties. Even VERMONT, a relative stronghold for independent/third party candidates -- the place that brought you Bernie Sanders -- doesn't have a majority of third party candidates. And when I call them a stronghold, I mean they are the only state (I know of) that consistently elects (less than a handful of) Independent candidates to the state legislature; the place is still dominated by Ds and Rs.
"The highest power in the land can't actually be voted on so there's no reason to vote for the democrats"
