I think the reason I can't create anymore is because it feels pointless, on some level.

Deep down, my creative urge always was an urge to be loved. A desire to be redeemed, to be made palatable to others, to become worthy of love by grace of a thing I made being "good enough".

And... I guess I know now that won't happen.

I gave my all last year. I did probably the best work of my entire life.

And it wasn't good enough.

It wasn't enough to make someone care about me. It did not prevent being rejected and cast aside. It did not redeem me.

What could possibly motivate me to create anymore, in the face of that?

On the subject of love tragedies:

I find it really funny in a bittersweet kind of way that most of the Donquixote Family (not the gang, but the actual family) came to their senses and tried to redeem themselves by being decent and having some speck of humanity.

Dad saw the injustice and tried to do damage control before it could rot his children, and sure, it backfired on him, but I respect him for even trying. That took a lot of guts. It didn’t even take that much convincing before Mom was in on the plan and agreed wholeheartedly, and she never regretted it, not even on her deathbed.

Rosinante, even after being raised by the marines, never lost sight of his parents’ wish or forgot about the atrocities committed by the Celestial Dragons. Sure, he was very young when they left, but he never forgot the misery they brought nor let the Marines brainwash him into thinking what they did was right because they were ‘Gods’ and their word was law. And how beautifully poetic that is, isn’t it? Because despite everything he went through as a civilian, he decided to break that particular cycle of violence. He could have become Doflamingo; he went through the exact same hell as his brother, after all. But instead he saved one of their ultimate enemies. And he loved him so much in such a short amount of time that it changed Law’s narrative. The child who was supposed to die at 7, 10, 13, and thanks to miracle after miracle—one of which was Rosinante—he lived, and lived, and lived.

Mjosgard spent one (1) trip at sea with Queen Otohime and it changed him so fundamentally that even a decade later she still resonated so strongly within him that he gave his life up knowing full well what consequences defending her daughter would bring.

And then you have Doflamingo, who truly was just an unrepentant asshole. Which is really ironic because most of them were adults, which you would expect to have a harder time to break out of bad habits. And there he is, The Proud Black Sheep of the Family since he was a brat.

His blood family all died for love, and then there’s Mingo. Being the only one left alive.

Rewatching succession it really is wild to see Kendall and Shiv convince themselves over and over again that they can "fix ATN/Waystar from the inside" only to completely abandon their morals the minute it gives them a strategic advantage.

When they're on the outside it's an endless diatribe about how evil and rotten the company is to its core, but the second they get the slightest whiff of power they suddenly decide the problems are actually really manageable and that with the right leadership it could be a force for good, and like...the saddest part is that they genuinely seem to believe that.

They were both different types of Victims, Anya being sexually assaulted and having her sense of safety, personhood, and autonomy violated. Curly was manipulated and belittled by Jimmy pre crash several times, Jimmy also completely twisted what Curly said a few times to warp it to his own perception. They did not have a healthy friendship.

Everyone on the Tulpar was a victim of Jimmy’s by the end.

thinking about colin saying he doesnt want to be a spokesperson in contrast with sam embracing the opportunity to be a spokesperson, how even though being closeted in an extremely heterosexual and homophobic environment is a painful experience colin can blend in but thats never been an option for sam or any other black athlete. sam is obviously the type of person to speak up about injustice whether he's obligated to or not but in many ways he doesnt really have a choice, not in the way colin does as a white guy.

even within the queer community a cis masc white guy like colin is not going to experience the kind of bigotry a gender non conforming or trans queer person would. and thats not to say that being closeted is a privilege (it is so very very not) or that the homophobia people like colin face isnt awful and painful but it's just. different. and we see this all the time in real life, there are so many white queer celebrities who feel the same way as colin about being a "spokesperson" but really no one wants to be a spokesperson, no one wants to have to fight just for their right to exist but we're not exactly given a choice.

I love how taxi driver is constantly subverting what you think you're watching and what you want to root for.

the first 40 or so minutes of the film are viscerally uncomfortable. travis' interactions with betsy immediately solidify him as a creep; he stalks her, backs her into a corner by repeatedly asking her to go on a date with him, and when she finally agrees he thinks nothing of coercing her into seeing an adult film with him, not even putting the tiniest bit of effort into inquiring about her comfort level. but that's because this is normal to him, he thinks nothing of how she might feel about any of this because there's nothing Wrong with any of this in his mind.

he spends no more than seconds interacting with her coworker and then suddenly he thinks he's totally assessed betsy's relationship with coworker and has no problem airing out every single negative thought about this man who he's barely spoken to and to betsy who he's Also barely spoken to. he thinks that because he personally felt a (surface, nothing more) connection with betsy upon seeing her for the first time that she must've also felt the same way and Clearly this is indicative of the fact that they are perfect for each other . when it is very clearly not and also this is just presumptuous and creepy. there's this innate entitlement to him and he sees no issue with it. in fact, the only issues he thinks he has are being out of shape, eating unhealthily & taking pills. that's literally it.

and so obviously this is all something, right. it's all very gross.

but then he's introduced to iris and things change a little bit because here's this girl in need that only he can help. she's being horribly abused and he's the only one who sees a problem with it. this reinforces his feelings of everything being wrong, the city being a cesspool and the people in it scum. and frankly this is where, I think, you can start to see things his way a bit.

this is also where that sense of entitlement comes back around again but it's not necessarily such a bad thing in this case. it is this idea that everything is wrong and really only he has the power to stop it that fuels his drive to do something about iris' situation, apart from it just being horrific on its own. you can't help but root for him here because her situation is so bad and he's the only person showing any human decency to this poor girl. the epitome of "breaking news: worst person you know just made a really great point."

and frankly when he killed her pimps I was like you know what hell yeah!!!!!!!! it's such a wild ride because so much of his disgusting behavior really makes you wanna write him off altogether (and frankly u still probably should regardless of him saving iris) but also it's sooooo fun watching a character struggle in the throes of a savior complex (especially if they're also a bit delusional as well and maybe the complex is borne of something more complex)!!!!!!
