We broke the cardinal rule. Mabel is officially a foster fail and is back home after her spay surgery. :P
She is not the least bit smug about it
#she was kicking up a huge fuss in her carrier until I sang her the Mabel song and she calmed down immediately lol#like it finally clicked in her head oh I am going back home#girl immediately ran for her food bowl and she knew exactly where it was lol#I wasn't sure if she would remember being here which was kind of stupid because it's been about a week#but still it was nice that she did#also funny story#while Eloise was not adopted by us I did see her when I went to pick up Mabel#and it turns out.... dramatic pause... she is an Elway! lmao#it's really hard to sex young kittens and sometimes even professionals get it wrong

Sometimes caring So Much feels like a curse in this cruel world. but sometimes it allows me to connect with other people who also care A Lot and together we actually are able to make a difference. And that is literally the best feeling in the entire world.

Fallout is so delightful. I don't know that I have a lot to say about it but it's nailing the video game aesthetic, Lucy is adorable, the Ghoul is a spectacular Walton Goggins deployment, and I'm coming around on Maximus because he becomes infinitely more tolerable when he's sharing a screen with Lucy. Usually if I don't like a guy and then he's presented with a romance subplot he just finds new and worse ways to annoy me more but they're so cute together. I am rooting for him!
#between this and the last of us when did we get so good at video game adaptations?#is it just that these are very cinematic video games?#lol fallout almost goes too far because there are so many little moments where I can almost feel the show pausing so i can pick an option#but I'm enjoying it!#however. i will say that i am happy for fallout fans but feeling very bitter and this could have been me about amazon elves#is fallout anything like the silm? eh. not particularly aside from ghoul-maglor comparisons u could draw if u wanted to#second age should have some post apocalyptic vibes#the past is alive in us even if we don't remember it#it's enough to get me going#but how come THEY get a loving and stylish adaptation made with care and affection???#i'm just saying vaults and gondolin!!! it's not nothing

Oc rant because im NORMAL
Okay Solar's hair can't stretch since its been fried to a crisp so she gets into a LOT of accidents generally everytime she leaves the golf course . Solar starts noticing that he's been assigned on less and less scouting missions lately . Solar then starts noticing that he's not being assigned on any missions outside at ALL . Solar gets upset and asks Clay, who makes the lists, and he gets confused because her name IS supossed to be there. Solar's name is crossed out in glittery pink ink
#arryou seeing . where im going w this#AOAUDHXHXBXB the thing is Viva never says when an action is influenced by her personal feelings#like . specifically the scene where she says you cant leave yet because . and then she pauses w this scared look . then she says because its#just not safe out there#she makes it about them instead of about her not wanting them to leave . ami making sense#and the thing is upon doing so w solar#“I just dont want you to get hurt” solar views this as . you think im too weak to take care of myself#so solar's just under the impression Viva's actions are very straight-forward w no underlying feelings [she took me off the list because she#doesnt think Im capable] rather than [she took me off the list because shes scared she'll lose me]#im. normal#solar and his need to feel useful to feel loved . grabs him and chews on him#starztalks#trolls solar

Can we hear about Jingyi please!!
Always (✿◡‿◡) - This is a direct follow-up from what I posted for WIP Wednesday this week!
-/-
“It is time for you to return to Shufu, Jingyi. Would you like to play with A-Yuan again tomorrow?”
“Yes please,” Jingyi replies, because even if he still doesn’t like Lan Yuan very much he won’t pass up the opportunity to come play with the rabbits or his too-loud games that he can’t play anywhere else. It doesn’t even matter if Lan Yuan doesn’t want to play them with him or not – he’s plenty good at entertaining himself if he’s got the chance, so he’ll take it.
“Mn. Will you promise me you will go directly to Shufu from here? I must stay here with A-Yuan.”
“Yes, Hanguang-Jun!”
“Good boy, Jingyi. Go now, Shufu needs your help.”
The praise and the promise of being needed – genuinely needed, not just tolerated – both do wonders to get his focus turning away from his aborted games and to what the rest of the afternoon will hold, and so he bows quickly to Hanguang-Jun and Lan Yuan both before he goes running out of the clearing, legs buzzing and chest huge and full of light for all the energy that he’s finally allowed to let loose instead of bottling, bottling, bottling until he feels like he’ll explode.
He’s sensible enough at least to slow back down to a walk when he reaches the edge of the common areas, but his brisk footsteps still border close enough to ‘hurrying’ that he earns a few sideways glances on his way to Lan-xiansheng’s office. Jingyi doesn’t care. Lan-xiansheng needs him, needs his help with his extremely important work running the Sect, so Jingyi feels like a little rushing is okay when he’s got an important job to do. Something meaningful, not just another chore to get him out of the way.
“Lan-xiansheng!” he greets upon sliding the door to the man’s office open with a noisy clatter, grin wide enough to feel like it’s going to split his face in half. “I’m here!!”
“So you are,” Lan-xiansheng replies without looking up from whatever he’s reading. “Come in and shut the door Jingyi, I’ll send you back out in a few moments.”
Jingyi does as instructed, shutting the door a bit more carefully than he’d opened it before he steps further into the room with his hands tucked neatly behind his back. He takes a few deep breaths, trying to hide how out of breath he is from his time spent playing at top speed and then power walking through the Sect to get here, but he soon becomes aware of Lan-xiansheng’s piercing gaze on him so he figures he’s not doing a good job of hiding it.
“You played with Lan Yuan.”
It isn’t a question but Jingyi nods anyway, a little wary suddenly that just because Hanguang-Jun said it’s okay doesn’t mean Lan-xiansheng will agree with him.
“Will you do so again tomorrow?”
“Can I?” Jingyi asks, stomach beginning to sink.
“You may. I will arrange for water to use for combing your hair afterwards from now on,” Lan-xiansheng harumphs and goes back to whatever he’s doing at his desk. Jingyi’s hand flies to his hair, feeling around for all the little baby hair flyaways he’s sure are sticking to his sweaty forehead and finding that his ribbon is crooked as well. He flushes a bit and does his best to fix it without any way to see himself.
“Thank you, Lan-xiansheng,” he says with a little bow once he’s a little more presentable. Lan-xiansheng gestures for him to step closer, and once he does so he turns the folded letter in his hand to show him the name printed on the front.
“Do you know Lan Yishan-laoshi?”
“Mn!” Jingyi nods emphatically, excited to be able to say yes. “He teaches talismans to the shixiongs and shimeis!”
“He does. Deliver this letter to him, and once you have done so you may ask him any single question you have about talismans. Report back to me with your question and his answer, and we will discuss it. Repeat that.”
“Find Lan Yishan-laoshi without running. Give him your letter. Pick one good question about talismans to ask him, do my best to remember his answer. Then come back here without running, tell you what he said as best as I can, and then we will talk about what I learned.”
Lan-xiansheng blinks at him but his expression doesn’t change, so Jingyi doesn’t know what he’s thinking to make him pause before he says, “Good. Go.” Jingyi takes the letter and tucks it safely in the fold of his robes before he bows to Lan-xiansheng with a grin and takes off like an arrow across the room, throwing the door open again with a bang before he remembers he’s supposed to be going slow and jerks to a stop on the porch to close the door nicely behind him.
#the untamed fanfic#Why Not Me?#WIP#Lan Jingyi#Lan Qiren#Lan Wangji#what makes LQR pause is the way Jingyi's mind breaks his tasks down into smaller chunks than what he was given#as well as adding in rules like not running#He's still getting used to these glimpses into how Jingyi thinks and how overwhelming it can get when it 'shouldn't' be#of course no ADHD experience is universal but thinking in this step-by-step way is the reason a lot of us suffer with executive dysfunction#because simply 'clean my desk' for example has a lot of littler steps like 'sort through all the piled up papers'#'then decide where those papers go' 'but wait I need a box to hold them or else clean a drawer to put them in so I don't lose them'#and so on and so forth#and things can get complicated and ovewhelming very quickly

Watching the Junji Ito Maniac episode "Mold", and as far as I can tell so far, it looks like it's based on the visceral terror of real life black mold taking over your house until you can afford to fix it or move
and frankly literally nothing else scary needs to happen this is the scariest story he's ever written
#if there is an episode about this show just based on the concept of bed bugs and literally nothing supernatural occurs#it will hands down be the scariest episode of television I've ever seen.#I'd rather find literally anything else in my bed then real life bed bugs again. I was going to say I would rather find a monster in my bed#but as a monsterfucker I feel like this goes without saying#I'd rather find the thing from John Carpenter's The Thing in my bed than normal bed bugs#junji ito#junji ito maniac#original#and from what I've heard about black mold it's not only a serious biohazard but extremely difficult to get out of a house#I paused to write this because I got spooked by the concept of mold - literally nothing has happened yet except for a guy going 'gross!!'#but it is one of those rare nights where staying up later than usual is not in my worst interest#I have a silly show set up to watch after this like a spookiness rip cord#friends if you ever come home to your house and it's covered in unidentifiable mold you need to get out of there until it's checked out#ESPECIALLY if the family you leased it to was drawn by junji Ito#listen I know it's a metaphor for the human mind probably but holy crap dude you got to move#well the good news is the mold was probably just a baby#like a horrific physical manifestation of a baby clinging to every surface of the house and devouring everything in it#no joke that is way less scary than the concept of actual black mold XD I was like oh thank fuck it's magic#oh fuck yeah now it's Library demon time#oh how the memories of the past do haunt us eh buddies?#Jesus fucking Christ does this guy know how to draw a scary scary scary face#oh how I would have hated him as a child#oh how I long to possess his strange and horrible powers of art now

so so so fucking tired of people who perceive working in an office as the only “”real”” jobs
#the equivocation of ‘’professional’’ to ‘’white collar’’#the way people treat those schedules as ‘’the normal one’’ when there’s millions of people working outside those#me every weekend for the past seven months: i only have sunday off#my friends every time we want to hang out: can we do saturday instead uwu#and just the disparaging attitude ‘’business culture ‘’ has towards literally any job#tbqh i would rather die than work in marketing and that is. from what i can tell. most of the jobs available#in an office setting#idk maybe this is my outside opinion but a lot of those jobs feel superfluous or like. making their own problems to solve#like that post about the leftist commune where everyone was like ‘i can do admin and project management’’. how is that useful#it just feels very much like the american ideal of ‘if you work very hard you can be a self made millionaire’#is a lot more prevalent among that class#and like i know it’s also a matter of ‘i make more than you so i’m more important. skill issue’#but idk i just have the perception that i’m ‘’supposed to’’ go into a field i have no interest in and i’m Doing Something Wrong#and making my life unnecessarily hard on myself. because i have no interest in it#rant paused bc i’m gonna be late to work if i keep going lol#mine

I died so much fucking times in episode 2 of Song of Horror that after another try to complete it with the character I choose I saved it closed the game and still haven't opened it yet (... It's been a week? two? who knows..) 👍🏾
#nonsims#delete later#olya's rambles#the thing I hate about this game with the passion is the way I panic when presence comes (😏 I'M SORRY-) AND THE GAME WON'T LET ME PAUSE#I hate it when games don't let you pause in moment where your character can die because it's WAY too much#I just hate it#it's making me so anxious to play it#I CLOSED THE GAME ACCIDENTALLY (thank you steam!!!!) and when I got back it said something like#if you reject (I can't remember the word okay) your character in moment when they can die you can no longer play for them#AND IT'S SO NOT FAIR.#it's such a cruel thing#I didn't do this on purpose!! and now you're forcing me to start all over again because I got way too used to this particular character#that I can't imagine them not making it out alive in the episode THAT'S WHY I'M GOING TO REPLAY IT instead of respawning as other character#without losing any progress#:'( it's the worst thing#and like.. it's too harsh on a player#I panic a lot and I'm really easily scared AND game won't let me pause it and calm down and think logically#fuck you for this game!!!!!!#overall? THE PLOT AND MAIN ANTAGONIST. it's incredible for that#that eldrich entity out of that cursed music box.. presence... HOT and IT HAS TENTACLES??? if I'm correct about tentacles#SIGN ME UP!!!!#I know I wanted to play it myself and get like first hand emotions and experience but I can't go past that point where I saved#because I'm scared in a bad way

I'm at Episode 4... But it feels like we're about to finish the second book... either that or combine books 2 and 3 even more than they've already been combined...
#shadow and bone spoilers#shadow and bone#trying to be vague-ish but we are much further along than i initially expected us to be by this point#crows-wise we're about where i expected to be since going completely in order while still covering alina would be strange#but the stuff we have done feel like that came too quickly but i get the change#but alina-wise. we are. very far along.#please note i wrote this while paused just after the 'Caryeva set' were mentioned#i know something's about to happen and i know it's going to be like Book 2... but will it also be like Book 3?...#will the thing i could barely read because it was so devastating happen half a book sooner than i expected...

I like the accessibility, but I’d honestly have expected to see more “fuck you, mine’s better” fanslation takes and I am thoroughly disappointed.
I miss getting a bonus packet of translator’s notes at the end of something as well.
I feel like we've lost something linguistically with the rise of professional subtitles for everything because they just adapt jokes and idioms into their nearest English equivalent and lose cultural context. I miss watching anime in 2002 with subs by some guy who was just really passionate about japanese and would fill half the screen with an in-depth breakdown of why a pun works. I'm serious I want that again.
#something something to do with copyright or translation rights that I don't 100% remember but it's a drag.#copyrights and wrongs#anime#world&history#BONUS TAKE: I often prefer to see the translation split the difference and have them go with the nearest Eng equivalent but with an *#where they go off on ''well they literally said this which is the same concept but is the most common take where the author's from''#and just do the full on translator's note/explain the reference for stuff that doesn't have an easier translate#my friend and I have had several arguments where we arrive at the same conclusion from different directions#the most recent one I think was about whether a restaurant deal had a direct English translation#in Machikado Mazouku and NO I do not know whether that is the correct quantity of ''u''s#And she paused the anime so I could see the translator's note and I said ''endless noodles''#''they're describing one of those ''infinite fries'' deals but with another food. they should totes keep the translator's note though''#''because some people want to know the background of just how well that actually looks like it translates''#''also to take pity on the .002% of people who won't make the connection of 'ohhhhh what WE have at Crapplebees'''#and she's like ''but that's not what the translator's notes are for'' and I'm like ''well it's useful when things serve multiple purposes''#I think our main argument is which phrase goes in the subtitle at the bottom of the screen and which goes in the translator note at the top#to which I concede ''who cares as long as you pause it so I can read them''#so yeah I think she's right except for formatting preferences#which are preferences and not better or worse methods#mad disrespect for whomever made Hibiki from Symphogear swear though in one sub we tried she doesn't seem like the type#even if the subs themselves were easier for me to read >_<#I’ll admit one problem I have with seeing more than one translation myself though#is that I end up wanting to Frankenstein the bits I prefer from each one into a new one#and I completely lack the technical ability to do that.

Things Real People Do in Dialogue (For Your Next Story)
Okay, let’s be real—dialogue can make or break a scene. You want your characters to sound natural, like actual humans talking, not robots reading a script. So, how do you write dialogue that feels real without it turning into a mess of awkward pauses and “ums”? Here’s a little cheat sheet of what real people actually do when they talk (and you can totally steal these for your next story):
1. People Interrupt Each Other All the Time In real conversations, nobody waits for the perfect moment to speak. We interrupt, cut each other off, and finish each other's sentences. Throw in some overlaps or interruptions in your dialogue to make it feel more dynamic and less like a rehearsed play.
2. They Don’t Always Say What They Mean Real people are masters of dodging. They’ll say one thing but mean something totally different (hello, passive-aggressive banter). Or they’ll just avoid the question entirely. Let your characters be vague, sarcastic, or just plain evasive sometimes—it makes their conversations feel more layered.
3. People Trail Off... We don’t always finish our sentences. Sometimes we just... stop talking because we assume the other person gets what we’re trying to say. Use that in your dialogue! Let a sentence trail off into nothing. It adds realism and shows the comfort (or awkwardness) between characters.
4. Repeating Words Is Normal In real life, people repeat words when they’re excited, nervous, or trying to make a point. It’s not a sign of bad writing—it’s how we talk. Let your characters get a little repetitive now and then. It adds a rhythm to their speech that feels more genuine.
5. Fillers Are Your Friends People say "um," "uh," "like," "you know," all the time. Not every character needs to sound polished or poetic. Sprinkle in some filler words where it makes sense, especially if the character is nervous or thinking on their feet.
6. Not Everyone Speaks in Complete Sentences Sometimes, people just throw out fragments instead of complete sentences, especially when emotions are high. Short, choppy dialogue can convey tension or excitement. Instead of saying “I really think we need to talk about this,” try “We need to talk. Now.”
7. Body Language Is Part of the Conversation Real people don’t just communicate with words; they use facial expressions, gestures, and body language. When your characters are talking, think about what they’re doing—are they fidgeting? Smiling? Crossing their arms? Those little actions can add a lot of subtext to the dialogue without needing extra words.
8. Awkward Silences Are Golden People don’t talk non-stop. Sometimes, they stop mid-conversation to think, or because things just got weird. Don’t be afraid to add a beat of awkward silence, a long pause, or a meaningful look between characters. It can say more than words.
9. People Talk Over Themselves When They're Nervous When we’re anxious, we tend to talk too fast, go back to rephrase what we just said, or add unnecessary details. If your character’s nervous, let them ramble a bit or correct themselves. It’s a great way to show their internal state through dialogue.
10. Inside Jokes and Shared History Real people have history. Sometimes they reference something that happened off-page, or they share an inside joke only they get. This makes your dialogue feel lived-in and shows that your characters have a life beyond the scene. Throw in a callback to something earlier, or a joke only two characters understand.
11. No One Explains Everything People leave stuff out. We assume the person we’re talking to knows what we’re talking about, so we skip over background details. Instead of having your character explain everything for the reader’s benefit, let some things go unsaid. It’ll feel more natural—and trust your reader to keep up!
12. Characters Have Different Voices Real people don’t all talk the same way. Your characters shouldn’t either! Pay attention to their unique quirks—does one character use slang? Does another speak more formally? Maybe someone’s always cutting people off while another is super polite. Give them different voices and patterns of speech so their dialogue feels authentic to them.
13. People Change the Subject In real life, conversations don’t always stay on track. People get sidetracked, jump to random topics, or avoid certain subjects altogether. If your characters are uncomfortable or trying to dodge a question, let them awkwardly change the subject or ramble to fill the space.
14. Reactions Aren’t Always Immediate People don’t always respond right away. They pause, they think, they hesitate. Sometimes they don’t know what to say, and that delay can speak volumes. Give your characters a moment to process before they respond—it’ll make the conversation feel more natural.
Important note: Please don’t use all of these tips in one dialogue at once.

Not gonna write about it now but I genuinely think I could write an essay on how and why I hate "Um/Erm Actually 🤓" and other linguistic phrases that are generally rude, antagonistic, shut down conversation, and are simply not as funny as the user thinks they are
#one such example is the use of the phrase “who asked”#especially the kind where the user pauses significantly before saying “asked”#thus leading the replier to think that the user DOES want them to go on#god i hate “who asked”#edit: i forgot to mention how much i hate the americanized pronunciation of “erm” because it is BRITISH IN ORIGIN#i hate hate hate HATE how people pronounce the “r” because That's Not How It' Supposed To Sound#im not british btw i am fully american#i just care about proper pronunciation and have also grown up either reading British books or listening to people who r British via ✨media✨

Please don't tune out when you get to the non-partisan section of your ballot this November. First off, where state Supreme Court justices are elected, Republicans are trying their darndest to elect candidates who will destroy reproductive freedom, gut voting rights, and do everything in their power to give "contested" elections to Republicans. Contrast Wisconsin electing a justice in 2023 who helped rule two partisan gerrymanders unconstitutional, versus North Carolina electing a conservative majority in 2022, who upheld a racist voter ID law and a partisan gerrymander that liberal justices had previously struck down both of.
Second, local judicial offices will make infinitely more of an impact on your community than a divided state or federal legislature will. District and circuit courts, especially, are where criminalization of homelessness and poverty play out, and where electing a progressive judge with a commitment to criminal justice reform can make an immediate difference in people's lives.
It's a premier example of buying people time, and doing profound-short-term good, while we work to eventually change the system. You might not think there will be any such progressive justices running in your district, but you won't know unless you do your research. (More on "research" in a moment.)
The candidates you elect to your non-partisan city council will determine whether those laws criminalizing homelessness get passed, how many blank checks the police get to surveil and oppress, and whether lifesaving harm reduction programs, like needle exchanges and even fentanyl test strips, are legal in your municipality. Your non-partisan school board might need your vote to fend off Moms for Liberty candidates and their ilk, who want to ban every book with a queer person or acknowledgement of racism in it.
Of course, this begs the question — if these candidates are non-partisan, and often hyper-local, then how do I research them? There's so much less information and press about them, so how do I make an informed decision?
I'm not an expert, myself. But I do think/hope I have enough tips to consist of a useful conclusion to this post:
Plan ahead. If you vote in person, figure out what's on your ballot before you show up and get jumpscared by names you don't know. Find out what's on your ballot beforehand, and bring notes with you when you vote. Your city website should have a sample ballot, and if they drop the ball, go to Ballotpedia.
Ballotpedia in general, speaking of which. Candidates often answer Ballotpedia's interviews, and if you're lucky, you'll also get all the dirt on who's donating to their campaign.
Check endorsements. Usually candidates are very vocal about these on their websites. If local/state progressive leaders and a couple unions (not counting police unions lol) are endorsing a candidate, then that's not the end of my personal research process per se, but it usually speeds things up.
Check the back of the ballot. That's where non-partisan races usually bleed over to. This is the other reason why notes are helpful, because they can confirm you're not missing anything.
I've seen some misconceptions in the reblogs, so an addendum to my point about bringing notes on the candidates: I strongly suggest making those notes a physical list that you bring polling place with you. Many states do allow phones at the polling place, but several states explicitly don't — Nevada, Maryland, and Texas all ban phones, and that may not be an exhaustive list. There may also be states that allow individual city clerks to set policies.
You should also pause and think before you take a photo of your ballot, because even some states that don't ban phones still ban ballot photographs. But whether it's a photo, or just having your phone in general — in an environment as high-risk for voter suppression as the current one, you don't want even a little bit of ambiguity about your conduct. Physical notes are your friends.

around when I first started dating my boyfriend i bought myself this novelty blanket that looks like a photorealistic tortilla because I am SUCH A SUCKER for novelty shit. when he saw it in person for the first time his eyes lit up, which should have been a warning sign for the indignities to come.
so he’s a first responder and his day shifts start obnoxiously early as far as I, a pampered corporate asshole, am concerned. almost invariably when he’s at my place there will be an alarm at an hour that is downright unconscionable that will make him wake up and roll out of bed to get ready and will simultaneously make me burrow under the pillows grumbling about how surely nobody actually NEEDS their lives saved this early in the morning, after which I will promptly attempt to go back to sleep
he is a clever man and he knows this is when i am most vulnerable to attack.
every single time we do this dance, he quietly dresses, packs up, goes about getting ready to leave, and then when i have juuuust fallen back asleep, he returns with the tortilla blanket. He finds it no matter where I have hidden it.
He then creeps silently up to my side of the bed and uses his superior speed, strength, and reflexes to wrap me up in it incredibly tightly while i am still dazed and sputtering, so that i cannot move my legs or arms and am reduced to humiliating halfhearted magikarp flops that do not deter him from at least attempting to kiss my forehead.
then he goes to my bedroom door, opens it, then pauses, turns around, looks at me, the soft human filling of the facsimile of an enormous burrito he has just constructed, and says in his best romantic lead voice “I’ll see you soon, beans.”
you cannot understand how devastating it is to my ego that i am beans.
