Syrens can’t speak on land.
Rain gets summoned and isn’t used to not being able to talk. He’s a deep-sea Ghoul, rarely breaking the surface of the water so he’s only ever gone short periods of times not being able to speak.
Water Ghouls have their own type of sign language so they can commune above water and even under the water if they’re hunting.
When Rain is summoned he is not only silenced due to the amount of time he has to spend above water, but because none of the other Ghouls know sign, and the sign the humans have is different and makes no sense to Rain.
Rain also can’t write been as water, paper and ink don’t exactly mix so he never learned.
He just resigns to nodding and shaking his head and trying to mime as best as he can.
That’s until one day when the Fire Ghoul that has a Water’s name sneaks into his room and raises his hands, making the familiar shapes of infernal sign.
“I’ll be your voice. The voice I never had when I was summoned.”

Kinda not loving that the entire narrative on brain injuries is run by people with relatively minor ones. I know it happens with all disabilities but like... minor TBIs are fairly common so everyone else (people with severe brain damage and ABIs especially) just gets completely drowned out. Not to mention that a fair chunk of people with moderate to severe brain injuries can't really speak out as well as others or at all.
I'd just really like to speak to others with moderate or severe brain damage and ABIs for once

Just a reminder
You're still Autistic if you get most or all social cues.
You're still Autistic if noises and textures don't really bother you.
You're still Autistic if you get good grades, or don't need any/many accommodations.
You're still Autistic if your meltdowns are more like shutdowns, or they aren't "as bad" as you think they should be to count.
If you got the doctors note that says you're Autistic, then you are.
To the Autistics that are non-verbal, semi-verbal or have verbal-shutdowns, you're not being rude-you're allowed to stay silent.
If you stim, good for you! That's not a bad thing-if people think its weird or bad, that's on them. Go ahead-flap your hands! Sing! Rock!
If you have large meltdowns, you're not a burden and whatever made you feel that way is a completely valid reason.
Autism is a spectrum and a different way the brain works, not a set of locked-in symptoms that need to be eradicated.
Happy Autism Acceptance Month.

Auctober 2024
Day 8: Non-speaking
A lot of autistic people don't speak, such as non-verbal or semi-verbal autistic people. Because speaking is a huge part of communication for so many people, they might not understand people who don't speak, but remember, don't hate what you don't understand.
I sometimes shut down and become essentially unable to speak in stressful situations. In cases where someone who doesn't speak is in a distressing situation, it can be really difficult to communicate what's wrong, which can make the situation even worse.
Non-speaking autistic people still have things to say, so listen to them in whatever way they choose to communicate. There are other ways to communicate, and it is possible to accommodate them. If you're an autistic person who doesn't speak (or anyone who doesn't speak for that matter), I hope you get the patience and support you deserve :)

Ooc:
Every single character I like or even slightly relate to is some kind of non-verbal in my mind. That's just how it is.
Scott Summers? Talking is incredibly draining for him and he loses words fast. He's gotten better at it over the years but he still gets very stressed and sometimes angry if someone tries to talk to him when he is non-verbal. Has learned ASL and uses communication cards.
Alex Summers? Doesn't talk unless he find it incredibly important. Doesn't bother with AAC, if you don't know what he means through his body language then clearly you don't need to know what he is trying to communicate. Gets volatile when people try to make him speak. (Can you tell I hc the Summers brothers as having tempers? And being autistic. That's also important. In fact, their tempers and autism go hand in hand. I could make a whole separate post about this.)
Logan? Doesn't speak unless directly spoken to and will not answer stupid questions. Doesn't talk with more than a few words at a time unless he deems it necessary.
Charles Xavier? Finds verbal communication to be useless and somewhat constrained by human language, prefers to talk telepathically where he can also communicate through emotions and images.
Jean Grey? She has selective mutism caused by severe social anxiety.
I could do more but I'll keep it at here for now. This also goes for other fandoms too but I stuck to x-men cause, ya know, x-men blog. Anyway, if you want you guys should send me character and I will deem if they are some type of non-verbal and why.

I am not best at explaining, and I will try best. But there is a big difference between Non Verbal, Semi Verbal, and Verbal Shutdown.
I won't say much no Non Verbal, as I am not Non Verbal, but I will say that it means Not Verbal. That means they don't speak at all. It's not the same as can't talk sometimes or I can speak few words. Non Verbal means No Verbal.
I am Semi Verbal, this is different from Non Verbal because I can say some stuffs. I can scream "Bunny Hungry" if I want to go eat. I can scream "Bunny wants out" if I want to go. There are some other things I can say, won't list them all. So I can speak some. Sometimes I shut down and cant speak. Which would be verbal shutdown but is different from Non Verbal.
Verbal Shutdown is when someone who is able to be verbal is not able to speak currently. This could be for few minutes, hours or even days. Even if I Verbal Shutdown for a few weeks, has happened before. It don't mean I am Non Verbal because sooner or later I will speak again.
So long story short, please don't say I am Non Verbal if you aren't Non Verbal. Non Verbal individuals don't have times they'll speak again, unlike Verbal Shutdown.

so sos so tired of hearing "go nonverbal/nonspeaking" or "become nonverbal/nonspeaking from intense emotion/stress" for speech loss episode!
so so so tired of people claiming gatekeep "nonverbal" or "nonspeaking" and is actually okay to use!
so so so tired of hearing fully speaking people or people who only have infrequent speech loss episode and no other impairment say "I'm semiverbal I'm nonverbal I'm nonspeaking"!
so tired of abled people deciding they fit in with us because they get too tired and dont feel like talking sometimes! not the same thing!
so so so tired of hearing "majority verbal" "choice verbal" "demiverbal" you might have speech loss episode but that do not mean need special identify label to describe speech loss episode. you not the same as us!
semiverbal not the same as nonverbal/nonspeaking! we still can't fully understand what nonverbal/nonspeaking people go through!!
please stop!!!

uh just cus u experience verbal shutdown does NOT mean u r semiverbal
semiverbality is not:
being unable to speak when anxious , stressed , tired or overwhelmed (this is verbal shutdown)
or
being unable to use most words or phrases when anxious , stressed , tired or overwhelmed (this is also verbal shutdown)
semiverbality is:
Tumblr media
stop misusing verbality labels
we will not engage with discourse on this topic as we do not have to spoons to do so
-Arson (a semiverbal alter) (it/xe) + Sorine gatekeeper (death/hate/flesh)
