Hi! I apologize if it's not 100% in your stands. I'm not sure where to ask. This isn't "can I write about X". I try to just think with others, if you may have advice?
I was thinking about writing a story, in which MC is HIV-positive.
The thing is. He dies in a part of the story, and then comes back with a new body. Which is very much "healing" trope.
Another thing I'm not sure about is that he was in sex work as a minor.
Problem: I don't want to stereotypical, or bring stigma.
Thing is, if I go this root:
It brings a whole new underlayer to his story.
1. He was a superhero as a teen (that's how he dies).
2. when he comes back, he's a crime lord. But very in helping people. It's important to me to add that he's funding PEP and PREP for sex workers, and an anonymous free clinic.
I know this can all be made by having a side character with HIV, but. I want to talk about it (and shame and stigma and life long implications of things).
Background: I'm not HIV-positive, but I do have an invisible disability, and was/am in sex work. We never see STDs in fiction or treatment (I know it's not the only way to transform HIV, I'm talking in general.)
Thank you ❤️
Hello, thank you for your ask! I don’t know how revival works in your story, but there are plenty of ways to bring him back without curing him! I’m assuming his ‘old’ body won’t be used, but what if his blood needed to be used to make the new body? You could also change it to make his previous body used to make the new one. He could even briefly go back to sex work to fund his plans and contract it again. There’s so little representation of HIV positive characters in media that I’d really love if your character didn’t magically stop having it.
The idea of a hero turning grey to support their morals isn’t an uncommon one, and I don’t think it would be necessarily bad! Just on the safe side I’d recommend adding morally good characters who are also HIV positive and making it clear his diagnosis wasn’t what caused his shift in morals.
I don’t believe having him be in sex work as a minor is stereotypical, especially if he was initially forced into this line of work. Just be very careful and respectful of writing about it, I’d recommend reading (non biographical) works from survivors to get an idea of how to respectfully discuss it if you don’t know anyone to ask.
Have a lovely day!

"The “Düsseldorf Patient”, a man now aged 53, is just the third person worldwide to have been completely cured of HIV via stem cell transplantation.
As in the case of the other two patients, the so-called “Berlin Patient” and “London Patient,” the transplantation was undertaken to treat an acute blood disease, which had developed in addition to the HIV infection.
The Düsseldorf Patient received a stem cell transplant used to treat leukemia in 2013 and has shown persistent suppression of HIV-1 ever since, including during the last 4 years after the patient stopped taking anti-retroviral medication.
“I still remember very well the sentence from my family doctor: ‘don’t take it so hard,'” the Düsseldorf Patient, who had leukemia as well as HIV-1, said in a statement. “‘We will experience together that HIV can be cured!’ At the time, I dismissed the statement.”
Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a procedure used to treat certain cancers, such as leukemia, by transferring immature blood cells from a donor to repopulate the bone marrow of the recipient.
Scientists now understand that individuals with two copies of the Δ32 mutation in the gene for the HIV-1 co-receptor CCR5; are resistant to HIV-1 infection. The two previous cases of both the London patient and the Berlin patient involved receiving a stem cell transplant from a donor with these unique mutations.
Björn-Erik Jensen, a specialist in infectious diseases at Düsseldorf University Hospital, lead the treatment and subsequent research, revealed today in a peer-reviewed study in Nature.
The patient was diagnosed as having acute myeloid leukemia and proceeded to undergo transplantation of stem cells from a female donor in 2013, followed by chemotherapy and infusions of donor lymphocytes.
After the transplantation, anti-retroviral therapy was continued, but HIV was undetectable in the patient’s blood cells. Anti-retroviral therapy was suspended in November 2018 with the patient’s informed consent, almost 6 years after the stem cell transplantation, to determine whether the virus persisted in the patient.
“I very much hope that these doctors will now get even more attention for their work,” said the patient. “I have now decided to give up some of my private life to support research fundraising. And of course, it will also stay very important for me to fight the stigmatization of HIV with my story.”
The authors conclude that although HSCT remains a high-risk procedure that is at present an option only for some people living with both HIV-1 and hematological cancers, these results may inform future strategies for achieving long-term remission of HIV-1."

I remember a distressing amount of Roman Catholic patron saints for someone who never prays for help anymore. got tired of hearing the disconnect tone on the other end
#Saint Jude for lost causes#Maria Goretti for rape survivors#one saint for ‘ugly people’ who was actually disabled#(I never prayed to him but it mightve to cured my insomnia (he’s also a patron saint of coffee))#and Saint Damien for HIV and AIDS survivors. but I like to think he’s also for gay people who feel alone. I mean there was an overlap#I only remember saint george and august for artistic purposes#Edit: I MEANT SAINT ANTHONY. his paintings rock because he is being attacked by demons

Revolutionary Cure for HIV
HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a virus that attacks the immune system, leading to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) if left untreated. Since the virus was first identified in the early 1980s, scientists have been working tirelessly to find a cure for HIV. While there have been significant advancements in the treatment of HIV, there is still no cure.
However, recent scientific breakthroughs have given hope to the possibility of a revolutionary cure for HIV. One of the most promising approaches involves using gene editing technology to eliminate the virus from infected cells.
This technique, known as CRISPR-Cas9, allows scientists to precisely target and remove specific genes from DNA. In the case of HIV, the idea is to use CRISPR-Cas9 to remove the viral DNA from the infected cells, effectively curing the patient of the disease.

Homosexuality is dangerous than smoking
Homosexuality is dangerous than smoking. There are many reasons. The first reason is that homosexual people have a very high chance of contracting HIV or AIDS. It is quite difficult to cure homosexuality, same-sex couples cannot give birth to a child, to give birth to a child, you need two people of different sexes and many more reasons

Putting this into perspective: The issue is dated for August 1998.
There is a decent chance you browsing tumblr right now were born around that time. The infamous Pokemon Porygon episode aired in December 1997. The Clinton-Lewinsky scandal broke in January 1998 and Clinton was impeached later that year. Google was founded in September 1998. The first Half-Life game came out in November 1998.
And in August 1998, for the first time in 17 years, a San Francisco newspaper was able to report no HIV deaths in the past week.
The Bay Area Reporter was in its 28th volume. This means it spent more than half of its lifespan publishing the obituaries of AIDS victims. Every week. As of writing, August 1998 was 26 years ago. The newspaper was closer to its inception than to the current day.
Matthew Hodson: “ 20 years ago, 2 years after the arrival of combination therapy that effectively treated #HIV, the Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco’s LGBT newspaper ran ‘No Obits’ as its headline. It was the first edition not to report an AIDS death in almost 15 years.”
#so when they said yesterday. they meant it.#ramble#queer#lgbtq#cw homophobia#cw hiv#i know the tweet says “almost 15 years” but wikipedia says “since the beginning of the aids epidemic” which was 1981#so i suppose 17 is almost 15. technically#we dont have to talk about the horrors of the aids crisis right now. its genuinely horrifying stuff. also brought to you by colonialism#(most likely)#and yet hiv was (and is) considered a white gay mens disease#the Bay Area Reporter was actually a major contributor to spreading awareness for hiv victims of color#they did a lot of very important aids reporting#ykno. because no one else would.#we still cant cure hiv but we can treat it to a point where you have basically the same life expectancy (as long as you can afford it)#and thats overall pretty huge.#consider this your PSA to always always practice safe sex and use a condom unless all involved recently had STD screening#and also to always always always use clean needles. i dont care what you are injecting with. do it safely.

“It seems like almost all of those people don’t have HIV,” said Jennifer Kates, HIV policy director at KFF, a health-research nonprofit. “If they did, that would be substandard care at a pretty severe level,” she said.
Ya’ll. United Health just got accused of $17 billion in medicare fraud.
Basically they made up diagnosis which are improbable or impossible, “forgot” to remove ones which had been cured, and overall allegedly stole billions from taxpayers.
The government pays insurers a base rate for each Medicare Advantage member. The insurers are entitled to extra money when their patients are diagnosed with certain conditions that are costly to treat.
… About 18,000 Medicare Advantage recipients had insurer-driven diagnoses of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, but weren’t receiving treatment for the virus from doctors, between 2018 and 2021, the data showed. Each HIV diagnosis generates about $3,000 a year in added payments to insurers.
… He said internal company data for 2022 showed a treatment rate for patients UnitedHealth diagnosed with HIV of more than triple what the Journal found. He said the pandemic disrupted care, lowering treatment rates during the period analyzed by the Journal, and that the analysis failed to account for patients who started treatments in future years.
The Medicare data, however, show UnitedHealth’s patients with insurer-driven HIV diagnoses were on the antiretrovirals at low rates even before the pandemic, and hardly any started the drugs in the years after UnitedHealth diagnosed them.

I bet United Health really wishes it was a different week right now.
UPDATE/EDIT: Article is from July. I didn’t notice myself since it came up in my news feed. Don’t always trust the internet to be time accurate. 😎My guess is it is getting promoted due to current events. However, there are some updates concerning actions taken based on the report which you can look into by checking the authors’ other articles.

To put it in plain terms:
There is absolutely treatment available for HIV. In addition to preventative PrEP and PEP, there are *lots* of antiretroviral treatments (ARTs) available to treat HIV, including but not limited to Biktarvy (3 ARTs in 1 daily pill) and Cabenuva (2 ARTs, long acting injectable). HIV is not a death sentence. HIV transmission is preventable. HIV treatment exists & there is national funding to help you get ARTs if you're HIV positive (look up Ryan White).
#hiv#info#public health#no cure does not mean no treatment. there is absolutely hiv treatment available

Aids and Hiv Quotations
Quotes about Hiv, Aids and viruses Aids and Hiv Quotations, a collection of aphorisms and quotes about Hiv and Aids with links to posts, blogs, news and websites on the latest news on treatments, drugs and science researches. World AIDS Day, 1 December, serves as an important reminder that we must remain steadfast in our commitment to prevent new HIV infections and provide essential services to all people living with HIV globally. In 2024, we will commemorate the 37th World AIDS Day with the theme, “Collective Action: Sustain and Accelerate HIV Progress.” To read more about this year’s theme please visit the HIV.gov blog. AIDS does not inevitably lead to death, especially if you suppress the co-factors that support the disease. It is very important to tell this to people who are infected. Luc Montagnier AIDS is a global problem and there should be a global solution found by the entire international community. It is really scary to see and imagine our world fall into pieces because we refuse to share and put in the common vestiges of our civilizations. Sarah Polley AIDS is a judgment we have brought upon ourselves. Mary Whitehouse AIDS is an absolutely tragic disease. The argument about AIDS' being some kind of divine retribution is crap. Calvin Klein AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals. Jerry Falwell AIDS is the biggest challenge, the major disaster facing this country and we would have wished for something more specific and far-reaching. Mangosuthu Buthelezi AIDS win be our first priority, but in two years' time we don't know where AIDS research will stand, so we are also thinking of activity on other diseases. Luc Montagnier And so popular culture raises issues that are very important, actually, in the country I think. You get issues of the First Amendment rights and issues of drug use, issues of AIDS, and things like that all arise naturally out of pop culture. Kurt Loder As a nation we should commit ourselves not only to the fight against terrorism, but to economic justice, defeat of the AIDS epidemic and vestiges of discriminatory policies of all kinds. Charles Rangel As for AIDS, it's a plague. We are human, we get plagues. They come along every so often, kill off two thirds of the population; in the next generation it's a quarter; after that it's a childhood disease. Larry Niven Because I am not formally trained in the medical sciences, I can bring in new ideas to AIDS research and the cross-fertilization of ideas from different fields could be a valuable contribution to finding the cure for AIDS. Philip Emeagwali Because I found myself telling the story of his family to people without the visual aids that I was able to employ by filming them eventually. But I very much knew exactly what I was going to do. Terry Zwigoff Because of the lack of education on AIDS, discrimination, fear, panic, and lies surrounded me. Ryan White Being in the design industry, I've tended to meet more people who are affected by HIV and AIDS. Douglas Wilson Being, belief and reason are pure relations, which cannot be dealt with absolutely, and are not things but pure scholastic concepts, signs for understanding, not for worshipping, aids to awaken our attention, not to fetter it. Johann G. Hamann But it is true that sometimes an enveloping darkness aids one to clearer vision; as in a panorama building, for example, where the obscurity about the entrance prepares one better for the climax, and gives the scene depicted a more real and vivid appearance. Pierre Loti But try if you can to support, whether it's AIDS or the cancer foundation, so that someone else might survive, might prosper, and might actually be cured of this dreaded disease. Jim Valvano Electronic aids, particularly domestic computers, will help the inner migration, the opting out of reality. Reality is no longer going to be the stuff out there, but the stuff inside your head. It's going to be commercial and nasty at the same time. J. G. Ballard Epidemics historically have tended to kill the very young and the very old, but AIDS is different: Those ages 20 to 40 are most affected, which means that so far over 12 million African children have been orphaned because of AIDS. Marvin Olasky HIV infection and AIDS is growing - but so too is public apathy. We have already lost too many friends and colleagues. David Geffen I believe Aids is the most important issue we face, because how we treat the poor is a reflection of who we are as a people. Alicia Keys I burned out on AIDS and did no AIDS work for a couple of years. I was so angry that people were still getting this disease that nobody can give you - you have to go out and get it! Harvey Fierstein I came into a strong organization, and I hope I strengthened it more and expanded its capacity to deal with some of the challenges that might not have seemed as great 10 years ago, such as H.I.V., AIDS and children affected by war. Carol Bellamy I don't think President Bush is doing anything at all about Aids. In fact, I'm not sure he even knows how to spell Aids. Elizabeth Taylor I felt like calling attention to AIDS. I had the AIDS ribbon colored into my hair during the playoffs in '95. Dennis Rodman I found out through the Internet that I have AIDS. I learned that I was dead. Where else would I find these things? Layne Staley I go to Malawi twice a year. It's where two of my children were adopted from, and I have a lot of projects there that I go and check up on and children who I look after. It's sort of a commitment that I've made to this country and the hundreds of thousands of children there who have been orphaned by AIDS. Madonna Ciccone I have a file of letters and bits of ephemera from friends who have died. I have had lots of friends who died of AIDS. Rachel Maddow I have had lots of friends who've been affected by Aids and a very good friend of mine, Oscar Moore, died of Aids and I was with him in his last year quite a bit. And of course he was a man living in a very rich culture with a wealthy family who was able to afford health care. Emma Thompson I have learned more about love, selflessness and human understanding from the people I have met in this great adventure in the world of AIDS than I ever did in the cutthroat, competitive world in which I spent my life. Anthony Perkins I know one man who was impotent who gave AIDS to his wife and the only thing they did was kiss. Pat Robertson I learned to speak first, and then to sign. I have never really known what it was like to hear, so I can't compare hearing aids to normal hearing. Marlee Matlin I lost a very dear friend who lived with AIDS for about 17 years. Rejecting early treatments that were iffy, he thought he saved himself. I really miss him a lot. Bernadette Peters I lost relatives to AIDS, a couple of my closest cousins. I lost friends to AIDS, high-school friends who never even made it to their 21st birthdays in the '80s. When it's that close to you, you can't really deny it, and you can't run from it. Queen Latifah I'm doing a very funny show in which we talk about issues. I speak at Aids charities and things. It's great to do something fun with our days and yet we're told we're doing something important. Eric McCormack I'm grateful for doing those drugs, because they kept me from getting laid and I would have gotten AIDS. Steve Tyler I'm not really religious but very spiritual. I give money to this company that manufactures hearing aids on a regular basis. More people should really hear me sing. I have a gift from God. Christina Aguilera I've always wanted to write a book relating my experiences growing up as a deaf child in Chicago. Contrary to what people might think, it wasn't all about hearing aids and speech classes or frustrations. Marlee Matlin If Carter had been there when the AIDS crisis came up, it would have been a whole different story. It could have been treated like a legitimate disease. Jean O'Leary If I were offered a cochlear implant today, I would prefer not to have one. But that's not a statement about hearing aids or cochlear implants. It's about who you are. Marlee Matlin If we ever hope to rid the world of the political AIDS of our time, terrorism, the rule must be clear: One does not deal with terrorists; one does not bargain with terrorists; one kills terrorists. Meir Kahane If we only said safe sex, use a condom, we won't stop the spread of AIDS in this country. Thabo Mbeki If we stop exploring space, we're going to lose the same part of us that found vaccines and penicillin, the part that searches for cures to cancer and AIDS. Corbin Bernsen In fact, a large majority of those have died and of those expected to die of AIDS, as well as of those who are infected with the virus, are in sub-Saharan Africa. Claudio Hummes It doesn't upset artists to find out that artists used lenses or mirrors or other aids, but it certainly does upset the art historians. Chuck Close It is my mission to ensure that HIV-positive children and children with AIDS are no longer overlooked and that they begin receiving the treatment and care they deserve. Mike DeWine It was quite a ride and very conflicting for me, too - to be nominated for an Oscar, to be straight and healthy, and to be getting all these accolades while these people around me were suffering and dying from AIDS. Bruce Davison It will kill four times as many Americans as AIDS will over the next decade. I feel that what ever kind of disability God has given me, as an entertainer and as a public figure, it is so I can be a representative for others. Naomi Judd It's an interesting line that I walk. The AIDS crisis has done a lot for my songs and made them proliferate, and my songs have contributed a lot to that cause as well. David Friedman It's important not to lose sight of the fact people of all sorts are still putting themselves at risk. It happens to straight and gay, single and married. I have never been comfortable thinking of AIDS as something that 'other people' get. Brande Roderick It's not really that I've been an advocate for hearing aids for a long time, it's just that I've been losing my hearing for a long time! So it's actually very important for me because I'm actually hearing impaired and I simply want to hear better! Leslie Nielsen Most recently my battle has been against AIDS and the discrimination surrounding it. Ryan White My name is Ryan White. I am sixteen years old. I have hemophilia, and I have AIDS. Ryan White My play Safe Sex was picked apart because critics thought it was untrue. It was a play in which no one had AIDS, but the characters talked about how it was going to change their lives. Harvey Fierstein New drugs and surgical techniques offer promise in the fight against cancer, Alzheimer's, tuberculosis, AIDS, and a host of other life-threatening diseases. Animal research has been, and continues to be, fundamental to advancements in medicine. Daniel Akaka On December 17, 1984, I had surgery to remove two inches of my left lung due to pneumonia. After two hours of surgery the doctors told my mother I had AIDS. Ryan White One does nothing who tries to console a despondent person with word. A friend is one who aids with deeds at a critical time when deeds are called for. Euripides One is that if women's sexuality in Africa wasn't under assault, if women were able to say no, if women weren't subject to predatory attacks by men, or predatory behaviour generally, then you would have a disease in Africa called AIDS. But you wouldn't have a pandemic. Stephen Lewis Our meaning is to make our little planet Earth a better place to live, to stop wars, disarm nuclear missiles, to stop diseases, AIDS, plague, cancer and to stop pollution. Uri Geller Perhaps more than any other disease before or since, syphilis in early modern Europe provoked the kind of widespread moral panic that AIDS revived when it struck America in the 1980s. Peter Lewis Allen Questions have also arisen about AIDS being transmitted to hemophiliacs via blood transfusions. Serge Lang Roughly speaking, this hypothesis asks whether drug use causes some of the diseases officially associated with AIDS, such as immunodeficiency and Kaposi's sarcoma. Serge Lang Rumors of sneezing, kissing, tears, sweat, and saliva spreading AIDS caused people to panic. Ryan White Small aids to individuals, large aid to masses. Maria Mitchell Some say that AIDS came from the monkeys, and I doubt that because we have been living with monkeys from time immemorial, others say it was a curse from God, but I say it cannot be that. Wangari Maathai That the AIDS pandemic is threatening sustainable development in Africa only reinforces the reality that health is at the center of sustainable development. Gro Harlem Brundtland That's why I wanted to be part of this AIDS Project Los Angeles party. We help raise funds for those who are having a tough time with some very basic necessities, like shelter, food, and medical care. Brande Roderick The African Union has to act in order to put an end to armed conflicts that undermine the continent, to fight against the devastation caused by AIDS and other contagious diseases, to promote sustainable development of its member states. Omar Bongo The challenges surrounding HIV and AIDS are getting more complex and mature, and we just can't stick our heads in the sand and say 'it can't happen to me.' Brande Roderick The desire to move into a bigger house, to avoid living AIDS daily, and a dream to be accepted by a community and school, became possible and a reality with a movie about my life, The Ryan White Story. Ryan White The film itself involves a New York City radio storyteller, Gabriel Noone, who strikes up a friendship with one of his fans, an abused 14-year-old teenager who is suffering from AIDS, who does not have much longer to live. Armistead Maupin The film was made in 1973. It was a golden time for people to experiment without risking, for example, AIDS. Today one has to be so much more careful and I don't think a character like that could exist now. Sylvia Kristel The greatest grand challenge for any scientist is discovering how to prevent the spread of HIV and finding the cure or an effective vaccine for AIDS. Philip Emeagwali The hearing aids are very helpful for speech reading. Without the hearing aids, my voice becomes very loud, and I cannot control the quality of my voice. Marlee Matlin The heart of the security agenda is protecting lives - and we now know that the number of people who will die of AIDS in the first decade of the 21st Century will rival the number that died in all the wars in all the decades of the 20th century. Al Gore The message has become clearer to the nation about AIDS. People used to think they could catch it all kinds of ways, but we now know that it is absolutely passed through bodily fluids. Loretta Devine The music aids the message, it's there to punctuate and abbreviate and shape the silence. Saul Williams The pandemic of AIDS is a gender-based disease. Stephen Lewis The radical right is so homophobic that they're blaming global warming on the AIDS quilt. Dennis Miller The school I was going to said they had no guidelines for a person with AIDS. Ryan White The spirals of the helix should be as nearly approximated as possible, as each aids by its heat that of its neighbour, or rather diminishes the cooling effect of the gaseous atmosphere. William Robert Grove The trouble is it's very difficult to pin-point the most important thing because Aids affects everyone in different levels of society, differently and you have to respond to it differently. Emma Thompson The U.S. government has in recent years fought what it termed wars against AIDs, drug abuse, poverty, illiteracy and terrorism. Each of those wars has budgets, legislation, offices, officials, letterhead - everything necessary in a bureaucracy to tell you something is real. Bruce Jackson There are two things that I put my focus on. One is the fight against AIDS and finding a cure. The other is human rights. Judith Light There have been two popular subjects for poetry in the last few decades: the Vietnam War and AIDS, about both of which almost all of us have felt deeply. Thom Gunn There's a huge AIDS epidemic in Africa, and one of Bad Boy's plans this year is to give more awareness to that. We're gonna be doing a big charity concert helping to save some of the brothers and sisters in Africa. Puff Daddy Think about it: Look at the strides of awareness and treatment and tests that women have had with breast cancer, that the gay community has had with AIDS, because they're active and they talk about it. Herbie Mann This AIDS stuff is pretty scary. I hope I don't get it. Robert Mapplethorpe To date, nearly 100,000 Hispanics have died with AIDS. Since Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group in the United States, our challenge is even greater. Solomon Ortiz To me, celebrity doesn't mean a whole lot unless you're willing to use it. So I wanted to use it in a different way, with my AIDS work, the human rights stuff for the gay and lesbian community and the speaking I do. Judith Light We have common enemies today. It's called childhood poverty. It's called cancer. It's called AIDS. It's called Parkinson's. It's called Muscular Dystrophy. Jerry Doyle We must encourage people to get educated, to get tested, to get involved in the fight against AIDS. Gwen Moore We need men and women to sit down and talk to each other about sex honestly and openly. That would help us fight Aids so immediately. But our lack of communication is hugely problematic. Emma Thompson We started the AIDS virus. We are only able to maintain our level of living by making sure that Third World people live in grinding poverty. Jeremiah Wright We were taking collections for people with AIDS in New York around Easter. Chita Rivera We've taken on the major health problems of the poorest - tuberculosis, maternal mortality, AIDS, malaria - in four countries. We've scored some victories in the sense that we've cured or treated thousands and changed the discourse about what is possible. Paul Farmer When there's a terrible illness like AIDS sweeping through, you help people. Bernadette Peters When we walk away from global warming, Kyoto, when we are irresponsibly slow in moving toward AIDS in Africa, when we don't advance and live up to our own rhetoric and standards, we set a terrible message of duplicity and hypocrisy. John F. Kerry Wouldn't it be great if you could only get AIDS by giving money to television preachers? Elayne Boosler You know it's very difficult to be an actor, and to have people depending on you to say the right line, at the right time, and to not be able to hear your cues!
