Hi! I apologize if it's not 100% in your stands. I'm not sure where to ask. This isn't "can I write about X". I try to just think with others, if you may have advice?
I was thinking about writing a story, in which MC is HIV-positive.
The thing is. He dies in a part of the story, and then comes back with a new body. Which is very much "healing" trope.
Another thing I'm not sure about is that he was in sex work as a minor.
Problem: I don't want to stereotypical, or bring stigma.
Thing is, if I go this root:
It brings a whole new underlayer to his story.
1. He was a superhero as a teen (that's how he dies).
2. when he comes back, he's a crime lord. But very in helping people. It's important to me to add that he's funding PEP and PREP for sex workers, and an anonymous free clinic.
I know this can all be made by having a side character with HIV, but. I want to talk about it (and shame and stigma and life long implications of things).
Background: I'm not HIV-positive, but I do have an invisible disability, and was/am in sex work. We never see STDs in fiction or treatment (I know it's not the only way to transform HIV, I'm talking in general.)
Thank you ❤️
Hello, thank you for your ask! I don’t know how revival works in your story, but there are plenty of ways to bring him back without curing him! I’m assuming his ‘old’ body won’t be used, but what if his blood needed to be used to make the new body? You could also change it to make his previous body used to make the new one. He could even briefly go back to sex work to fund his plans and contract it again. There’s so little representation of HIV positive characters in media that I’d really love if your character didn’t magically stop having it.
The idea of a hero turning grey to support their morals isn’t an uncommon one, and I don’t think it would be necessarily bad! Just on the safe side I’d recommend adding morally good characters who are also HIV positive and making it clear his diagnosis wasn’t what caused his shift in morals.
I don’t believe having him be in sex work as a minor is stereotypical, especially if he was initially forced into this line of work. Just be very careful and respectful of writing about it, I’d recommend reading (non biographical) works from survivors to get an idea of how to respectfully discuss it if you don’t know anyone to ask.
Have a lovely day!

Homosexuality is dangerous than smoking
Homosexuality is dangerous than smoking. There are many reasons. The first reason is that homosexual people have a very high chance of contracting HIV or AIDS. It is quite difficult to cure homosexuality, same-sex couples cannot give birth to a child, to give birth to a child, you need two people of different sexes and many more reasons

Putting this into perspective: The issue is dated for August 1998.
There is a decent chance you browsing tumblr right now were born around that time. The infamous Pokemon Porygon episode aired in December 1997. The Clinton-Lewinsky scandal broke in January 1998 and Clinton was impeached later that year. Google was founded in September 1998. The first Half-Life game came out in November 1998.
And in August 1998, for the first time in 17 years, a San Francisco newspaper was able to report no HIV deaths in the past week.
The Bay Area Reporter was in its 28th volume. This means it spent more than half of its lifespan publishing the obituaries of AIDS victims. Every week. As of writing, August 1998 was 26 years ago. The newspaper was closer to its inception than to the current day.
Tumblr media
Matthew Hodson: “ 20 years ago, 2 years after the arrival of combination therapy that effectively treated #HIV, the Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco’s LGBT newspaper ran ‘No Obits’ as its headline. It was the first edition not to report an AIDS death in almost 15 years.”

“It seems like almost all of those people don’t have HIV,” said Jennifer Kates, HIV policy director at KFF, a health-research nonprofit. “If they did, that would be substandard care at a pretty severe level,” she said.
Ya’ll. United Health just got accused of $17 billion in medicare fraud.
Basically they made up diagnosis which are improbable or impossible, “forgot” to remove ones which had been cured, and overall allegedly stole billions from taxpayers.
The government pays insurers a base rate for each Medicare Advantage member. The insurers are entitled to extra money when their patients are diagnosed with certain conditions that are costly to treat.
… About 18,000 Medicare Advantage recipients had insurer-driven diagnoses of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, but weren’t receiving treatment for the virus from doctors, between 2018 and 2021, the data showed. Each HIV diagnosis generates about $3,000 a year in added payments to insurers.
… He said internal company data for 2022 showed a treatment rate for patients UnitedHealth diagnosed with HIV of more than triple what the Journal found. He said the pandemic disrupted care, lowering treatment rates during the period analyzed by the Journal, and that the analysis failed to account for patients who started treatments in future years.
The Medicare data, however, show UnitedHealth’s patients with insurer-driven HIV diagnoses were on the antiretrovirals at low rates even before the pandemic, and hardly any started the drugs in the years after UnitedHealth diagnosed them.

I bet United Health really wishes it was a different week right now.
UPDATE/EDIT: Article is from July. I didn’t notice myself since it came up in my news feed. Don’t always trust the internet to be time accurate. 😎My guess is it is getting promoted due to current events. However, there are some updates concerning actions taken based on the report which you can look into by checking the authors’ other articles.

To put it in plain terms:
There is absolutely treatment available for HIV. In addition to preventative PrEP and PEP, there are *lots* of antiretroviral treatments (ARTs) available to treat HIV, including but not limited to Biktarvy (3 ARTs in 1 daily pill) and Cabenuva (2 ARTs, long acting injectable). HIV is not a death sentence. HIV transmission is preventable. HIV treatment exists & there is national funding to help you get ARTs if you're HIV positive (look up Ryan White).

right?? We know drowsy driving is as bad as drunk driving, any expert will confirm this.
Yet why do we live with drowsy medicine?
We know our USA medical establishment schedules doctors to be so tired they're literally drunk as a skunk off fatigue, why would I pay 50,000 $$ to see a doctor who hasn't slept in 2 days? FOH i can get painkillers and travel abroad to get decent care.
Doctors would get fired for practicing drunk medicine. But drowsy medicine is routine! Someone make it make sense
Why can't hospitals learn how to schedule 3 shifts a day for 8 hours to make that nice (shocker) 24 hour cycle, since 8+8+8=24 conveniently.
Or you could easily schedule FOUR shift of 6 hours each, and they could have everyone including our doctors working 6 hour shifts. I'd prefer that.
Ah but there's a doctor shortage? I wonder why? Could it be that smart people get scared off by the 90 hour weeks they make new residents do for years? Could it be that doctors like myself know the horrible medical effects of working 90 hours and simply refuse to do that, and that we are severely limiting the supply of doctors by requiring rookie docs to work 90 hour weeks?...insanity. I'm happy to just be a doctor for my friends, family, our pets, and myself. I can make money any number of ways, I'm a doctor because I care, and b/c I care I've learned and remembered so much. I'm happy to help lend wisdom if anyone out there on tumblr has an ailment, I'm mainly eastern/ayurvedic and specialize / have experience in healing kidney stones, gallstones, cancer, heart disease, some cases of psoriasis, and some other conditions...
6 hour workday maximum i’m not kidding, if it can’t be done in that timeframe it doesn’t need doing.

Like it really does just speak to the power of music in film. I really would love to know the thought process. also genuinely sitting here torn between “nothing about the Hitcher could ever be good representation” and “they really went ‘we can’t have John Ryder become homicidally obsessed with a MAN, that was weird in the 80s.’” im. hello? it’s dark in here.
