We never had the chance to see a cinematic of the romanced companion reacting to Rook's actual return from the Fade Prison after two (?) weeks like WHY LOL and so I drew it just because I couldn't get it off my head hajksdhah
throws this comic like a grenade and runs away
Also, drawing Neve's expression here hurts so much—why must I draw to hurt myself lol

The more muted coloration is also what drew me into the show!
I've always liked older styled cartoons and comics (and old ad posters) like Squirrel and Hedgehog because they have a different 'feel' than later cartoons. Like they are more down to earth or something like that. This show in particular, because you can kind of sense the passion the people behind it have for making it.
And Squirrel and Hedgehog in and of itself manages to have an extremely captivating espionage plot, alongside interesting characters. It is full of somewhat complicated schemes, but is still easy to follow.
I like Commander Jogjebi as well, since he appears to have a well developed character. He is very smart, but is suffering from a brain injury that appears to be affecting some of his judgement. You can see that he is very intelligent, and thinks about his men (although a lot of that is how he can use them, and knows that there must be a traitor group as soon as Operation: Mole fails), but he does come off as far too trusting if he likes someone. It does not help that Geumsaegi is able to point out actual traitors, which cements the scout as someone he can trust with almost all of his secrets.
I am also very interested in Dr. Huinjogjebi as a close second, although mainly because I am fascinated by the mechanisms of the Iron Crow and the Sturgeon Robots. The Iron Crows especially, since they have real life equivalents that work about the same way as the crows, albeit mostly on navy ships and on land (and that is just what is known to the public).

what’s your opinion on the show (the original not the dub) and what’s your favorite character?
Hey! Thanks for sending in an ask!!
I find Squirrel and Hedgehog fascinating honestly. I’ve been familiar with the series since 2017-2018, but i didn’t get this much into it until recently when I watched the video Paper Will did on youtube. (It’s a great video and I certainly recommend it to any SaH or North Korean media fans.
There’s just something so methodical about the show in general that catches my attention. The muted color tones and overall somber aura of eps 1-26 that makes the show instantly captivating and recognizable to me.
I think I like the show since It’s certainly alien compared to the bright and pastel colors in kinda the western (US) sphere of animation. Hell, even anime (back then and now) doesn’t really have the look or feel of SaH. I especially like the first four eps, and how despite the chaos the characters face, it gives a feeling of November.
As for my favorite character…
Tumblr media
Its this freak of nature (Commander Jogjebi)
He’s so delusional im glad he gets blown up lmao I think it would take 15 different miracles to fix him (why would you try and fix him?) but he’s an overall neat villain till the end.
A close second is the glasses weasel from ep 30
Tumblr media
Bro is just dragged along for the ride. I dont think he was as in on the coup the Chief of Staff was planning. I honestly just cling to the idea he’s still alive but knowing how weasels tend to end up in the show, well…who knows.
Feel free to ask me more stuff, this was fun 👋🏾

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain.
When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead.
To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.

Iron Crow and Laser Weapons
I'm just straight up going to be out here making up the schematics and blueprints of the Iron Crow planes for this chapter, so I can extrapolate later, huh?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know nothing about planes, but here I am reading manuals and blueprints since these planes will probably feature heavily throughout The Rod That Blocks the Lightning. After all, a good portion of the plot of S2 was Geumseagi trying to find out what they were, and how they could be used against Flower Hill.
Especially since laser based weapons are apparently in development already? Like the HELIOS 60-plus-K-Class laser used by the USS Preble, used to blind optics and supposedly can destroy small targets.
Tumblr media
I think it is a similar version of the AN/SEQ-3 Laser Weapon System or XN-1 LaWS already in use by the US Navy to take down small targets.
(USS Ponce). Tumblr won't let me upload the video I have of it in action.
So, obviously, I now have to research these far more in depth, in order to figure out how the Iron Crows can take out entire tank units like they do.
Tumblr media
Actually, the beam is comparable to what we have now, it just seems to have a wider effect. I could see the Wolf Unit coming up with something like this, since they are supposed to be based on the US from what I understand, and these types of lasers have been researched since the 1930s. So why does Dr. Huinjogjebi have this type of technology in S1, if not for espionage and such? There must be a reason why the Wolf Unit hates the Weasel Unit.
The shape of the lasers is comparable to real life. I can see how the weight is distributed for the most part, so the shape of the plane should be sound.
Tumblr media
Although, they mostly seem to need something much more larger, like one of those large Navy Boats, to provide a stable base and energy support. The ships they are attached to don't seem to be using nuclear energy or anything like that. In fact, it appears to be good for ground attacks and boats anyway, since it can burn through aircraft wiring surprisingly easily.
Anyway, things to get you on an FBI watch-list part 8.

Something something Nina being dressed as The Lost Bride and Kaz and Muzzen as Madman as their disguise for getting into Hellgate. Like, i know these are just silly made-up names and all, but Nina is literally a girl who's lost her man and is away from home with nowhere to go (a lost bride, one might say), Muzzen is someone who's accepted to take a slaver's place in the most horrible prison ever so he could bust out (a madman), and as for Kaz, well, it's self-explanatory.
