I don’t think I’ve ever been so comforted and haunted by a song as I have with Butchered Tongue by Hozier. It’s so incredibly, terribly beautiful. It took me a while to be able to listen to it without instantly sobbing my eyes out. Took me even longer to put words to my feelings towards it. The grief it portrays, of losing one’s culture and language. Yet also the comfort of finding others in common. The horror yet unity of realising that the scar of colonisation wraps around such a large chunk of the world.
It’s the cruelty of punishing those who dare to speak their own language, dare to dress and dance in the ways of their people.
To me, this song is hiraeth.
It’s grief and love and longing and hope all in one. There is no English word equivalent. Hiraeth can be used to describe that feeling when you can’t speak your grandparent’s language. When you no longer know the steps to a dance once performed often. That feeling of longing when you’re far from home. When you can’t return home. In this case, home can be a country, or it could be your old home or someone you once had in your life. Yet it can also be the hope that you might have those things again one day. That you might find someone to teach you the steps your body calls for or the words missing from your tongue. To me, Butchered Tongue encapsulates every corner of hiraeth. Both the hopeful and the hopeless kind. Because not every language has someone left who knows how to speak it, how to teach it. Yet there are those who do and still they must fight their rights and for respect from uncaring people. There’s a love in this song for minority and indigenous languages across the world. I listen to this song and I ache, not just for my own ancestors, but for those across the world whose fight is much harder than ours is. Whose governments still refuse to acknowledge them as human beings.
People need to stop viewing colonising languages as some kind of main character languages that are better and more intelligent than every other language. Fed up of folks mocking minoritised languages and calling them worthless.
Tell me again how funny you think my language is. Please. I might just laugh this time.

Every language I am learning on Duolingo and what is hardest about it, ranked by amount of xp:
Chinese (Mandarin): I speak more Chinese than the target audience. I spend lessons guessing what Duo wants and making mistakes cuz I forgot how English word order works. Also, if I were trying to learn characters, I would not be learning them via Duo even if I tried.
German: my German background is garbage. Nobody has formally explained how grammar works and I’m just brute forcing my way through. I have no clue which case to use.
Japanese: for some reason, I look at すし and think “shòu sī”. English pronounces it sushi. That hiragana is pronounced sushi. Why does my brain say it’s supposed to be “shòu sī”. Also, it hasn’t taught me any kanji yet, but I suspect it won’t do a great job of it.
Irish: bruh. Can you please explain the spelling. I know it’s a pretty regular spelling system but you’re not explaining how it works. Why. I am just guessing how things are pronounced but that’s a terrible idea because Irish spelling is even less Englishy than Pinyin.
Finnish: I’m two lessons in. I’m so hyped to experience vowel length. At least that’s a thing in Japanese too lol.
#Yes I know duo is bad at language teaching#Which is why I’m using it to maintain my Chinese and German vocab and learn enough Japanese to read song titles#And also Irish and Finnish were impulse adds lmao#Also yes this would be much easier if I learned any related languages. But nooo I speak Mando and a bit of German. So I’ll learn Irish.#Japanese at least has kanji?

Thinking of Eurovision next year... if Ireland don't put in a song as Gaeilge I will be upset.....Like a rock/metal song in Irish! We've so many fantastic artists that could do it so well. And in Irish! Ughhh!!! I doubt RTÉ will ever let it happen but I can dream

I just learned one of my colleagues (originally from Ireland) crossed paths with Hozier in a Dublin pub (I forget the name) years ago.
Does the gif at all indicate the nature of the story?
No, I just love looking at him.
But also, the hair?
Like, sir? Could you not?!
With the smile?!
And the glasses?!
My brain go brrr.
#no not all Irish people know each other#but did i almost make that comment#yes#anyway my coworker was playing pool and apparently Andrew was in his space#so my coworker said something like 'excuse me. can you move just a little bit.'#and hozier who has one woman on each arm stands up and my coworker's like y'know what? it's all good#😆#my coworker's...average height#and then his friend was like you know who that is right?#no#it's hozier#oh shit!#sooo we got on Hozier in our conversation because#that coworker (I'll call him L) asked another coworker (SW) for help with a leatherworking project#SW gave sound advice and L said 'I'm smelling what you're farting' and we lost it 😆#and that prompted me to share a (happens to be Irish) turn of phrase i had learned from a Hozier song#which is 'too sweet to be savoury'#anyway human language is fascinating#I'd heard 'I'm picking up what you're putting down' before#but not the farting one#and yet#pretty easy to infer#as was the sweet/savory one especially in context of the song lyrics

A Mhaighdean Bhàn Uasal
"Little baby, hear my voice / I’m beside you, O maiden fair / Our young Lady, grow and see / Your land, your own faithful land / Sun and moon, guide us / To the hour of our glory and honour / Little baby, our young Lady / Noble maiden fair" -"A Mhaighdean Bhàn Uasal (Noble Maiden Fair)" translated
"And what if I can't be like Thancred's Minfilia or Siberite? I knew nothing of the world or even how to live until just a few years ago, how could I ever be as heroic or capable as them?"
"You know there was a time when those two wondered how they would ever live up to those that came before them, Siberite especially. I don't know the full story but I have a feeling she, much like you, hadn't known much of the world or how to live until just a few years ago." Demos holds out his hand, Minfilia taking it gently and cautiously, "And like her you're not alone in this."
He's slow to start the lullaby in a tongue lost to the ages of the Shroud, but one of the few who's meaning was passed down. Minfilia looks up at him curiously, attempting to mouth the words finding some feel the same as that of the pixies' language. When he finishes, he gives the young woman's hand a reassuring squeeze and smile. "It's a beautiful song, but why sing it to me? What does it even mean?"
"Same thing I sang to Sib once upon a time. Just something meant to calm the mind and a reminder that you're still coming into your own, Mhaighdean. You'll figure out the heroic stuff, just give it time and look to those around you."
#Thank you for sending this in! Sorry it took me a minute to finish it!#Anyway have the two moments Demos sings this song!#and yes feo ul did pop out to translate the song when Ryne asked once more because i hc that there's some old elezen languages#that are similar to that of the pixies but because i'm not creative its just things in gaelic both irish and scottish#demos reyes oc#siberite akagane oc#brotp: anam cara#ryne waters#shadowbringers vibes#heavens blood vibes#ffxiv#ffxiv gpose#my screenshots

Kara once came home early from work and superheroing and stumbled upon Lena in the kitchen wearing comfy clothes in the middle of baking something and singing. The sight itself wasn’t anything too new, ever since Lena had become pregnant she’d taken to singing or humming anytime she was alone and content, but what was new was that as Kara stepped into the kitchen her vision changed from seeing Lena in their kitchen to seeing wide open moors filled with heather and wild grass along a sea side coast, Lena walked barefoot among the sweet grass with one hand running over the tall blades while her other arm held a baby to her chest, the white dress she wore flowing behind her in the soft breeze and the faint sound of singing in a language Kara didn’t know.
When Kara tells Lena about it a few months later Lena can’t help but blush and admit she’d been practicing her magic. Kara can only smile and ask to see more, Lena is more than happy to oblige and let her wife into the scenes and memories she sees when she sings.
(I haven’t watched season 6! Listen I stopped sometime in either late season 3 or early season 4 but thanks to the glory that is the internet I accidentally stumbled onto the fact that Lena is a witch! You wouldn’t believe how ecstatic that made me lol but from small context clues I’ve gathered she isn’t descended from an Irish coven but from Newfoundland? If I’m wrong correct me but I’m not changing my stuff because I’ve been with the side of the fandom that stands firm with Lena being Irish and I’m gonna stay that way lol)
#supergirl#supercorp#lena luthor#kara danvers#Lena owns every Celtic Woman album#and she loves the songs#Supercorp baby#Kryptonese is natural to Kara#but she can’t quite grasp Irish or Celtic#Lena finds it adorable#their kids will know so many languages

just found out apparently there is a song in hozier's new album abt language! wanted to rec it to you both because. it sounds very beautiful and also obviously because lyrics: butchered tongue
Oh, really? Cool! I've seen that Hozier songs have been coming out, but I haven't kept close track and didn't know there was a whole new album now.
I'm listening to it now and ough. Okay wow yeah that hurts. Especially that "Until the distance has been shown between what is lost forever / And what can still be known" line, that's incredibly reminiscent of several of the convos we've been having about trying to reclaim what we can, but how it will never be quite the same as what it could've been. And trying to reconcile and be okay with who we are while still feeling the righteous anger at what was taken from us culturally and linguistically.
And then "A butchered tongue still singin' here above the ground". I don't even know how to explain it, but you get it, right? We are butchered tongues, we're alive but with this piece cut from us. But we're still singing, we're still trying, we're teaching ourselves as many sounds and words as these butchered tongues will accept because we're not letting our language passively go. And despite our difficulties and how it's never be quite the same, we're still persevering.
I love this language...partnership? Camaraderie? Connection? Solidarity? we've accidentally discovered--thank you for sharing this song with me <3
#hozier#quil's queries#soryasongsaa#ough the guilt and grief and everything wrapped up in having a butchered tongue#that song just punched me in the chest#and also reminded me. gaelic is another language I'd like to learn#there's irish ancestry on my dad's side. I don't know how much but they're very loudly proud about it#so regardless of the amount because of that I understand that part of my family (and therefore myself) as irish#though I don't think...they speak the language?#idk I'm not close with them#but anyway!#just thought of that since. the song
