This Month's Favs

Gabe @words-writ-in-starlight (wordswritinstarlight on Storygraph) : The Husky & His White Cat Shizun (2ha) Volume 6 by Meatbun Doesn't Eat Meat. Runner up is the whole Murderbot series by Martha Wells (on a re-listen). They refuse to pick favorites.

Nic (businesswife) : The Sacrifice by Rin Chupeco for fav novel and Re-Living My Life with A Boyfriend who Doesn't Remember Me by Gin Shirakawa was their favorite manga.

Meghan (edgybutfemme): The Husky & His White Cat Shizun was also probably my fav, with the final Guardian by Priest as a very close second. Literally any month I read a 2ha volume it'll be hard to pick a different fav book.

We had an absolutely wild August, but thankfully we managed to fit some reading in (especially devouring some of the manga we got at AnimeNYC)!

not sure if it was a writer's decision or a harpercollins one but you can really feel the strain with them trying to quickly include fire and ice on top of into the wild. they've cut out a lot of key moments like setting up fireheart's relationships with morningflower, gorsepaw, and onewhisker which helped later emotional beats hit harder. it's a choice i can understand but not one i can really get behind. cutting out the battle i guess is something....but once again we're missing a key introduction to one of arc 1's antagonists: leopardstar. you don't need the vendetta to make it work, but it adds a lot to it.

This is in the middle of a story arc, but it doesn't really matter. Only context you need for Harley's part is that she, Batman and a kid named Bao (Clownhunter) were knocked out and brought to Arkham as a part of a separate conflict between Bruce and someone. ❤️

Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red

The first chapter, "Harleen: Red", is connected to and takes place in the Harleen (2019) universe. Best read after Harleen and the unofficial continuation.

The continuation is just parts that Stjepan has posted online over the years, I tried my best to put them in an order that flowed. <3

Batman Secret Files: The Gardener

The full comic isn't Harley centric, but I absolutely adore the way Bella tells the tale of Ivy's origin & meeting Harley, it's a cute part showing their relationship.

Harley Quinn: Wild Card (Backstories)

This one is kinda like a somewhat more detailed cliff notes for kids. Parts of her origin is different and aligned with her Rebirth one, but I think it's great to get a feeling of how her character progresses. Though like I said, it is definitely for a preteen & younger audience so some stuff is watered down. Her relationship with Joker isn't as graphically abusive (he's a toxic little bitch, but not shown being directly physical with her.), and her introduction into the Suicide Squad is more chill and something she agrees to do.

But even with that, I love it! It's got pencil sketches throughout, notes from Harley herself which I think is a lovely detail and added bits about her relationship with Ivy over the years.

Harley Quinn (2000)

#6: this is kinda the beginning of a two chapter plot, but I'm including for stuff in this chapter only.

Also, her characterization during one part that involves Bruce's female bodyguard feels ooc imo, especially considering it's the same writer from #2.

Taako having a twin sister was obviously wild. Like Lup was such a major presence in the entire story and we didn’t even know who tf she was which is incredible- how you can love Lup and know nothing about her.

Not on hand but I can make one here! :D

There are two, soon to be three, canon graphic novels.

Through the Moon takes place between seasons 3 and 4, like a little season 3.5 It isn't Necessary to read it before watching S4 but the story is cool and the extra information is neat. It feels like we might get more info regarding what happened to Rayla while she was gone later in the show

Bloodmoon Huntress takes place when Rayla is a child around when her parents leave. Lots of Runaan and Ethari, also introduces Kim'dael who will be in S5. Again, not Required reading but a fun extra story.

Puzzle House is coming out August 1st and is about Claudia and Soren as children, and we also get a look at younger Viren and other people. Harrow's father, King Atticus is still king in this one so interesting Katolis lore, SUPER hyped for when we get to read all of this one. The Scholastic link has a 15 pages preview if you wanna take a peek.

There are novelizations for Dragon Prince Season 1 and Season 2, they add a bit of introspection and small extra details. Viren in particular gets more of his internal thought processes laid out and for me it just Confirmed a lot of things. Season 3's novelization is coming out April 2nd, 2024. I'm sure all 7 seasons will eventually have novelizations.

Tales of Xadia is the ttrpg book and it's gorgeous and is probably the most lore heavy supplemental material as far as world building goes. The system also looks fun! The website has a character builder too for OC making. As a writer, it's been a great help as far as seeing some aspects of the world laid out. The system looks fun and there are videos of some of the cortex(?) team playing ToX official tales/campaigns but I haven't watched them yet. The campaigns are also available to look at online too.

I think that ToX is getting an expansion at some point since the base game doesn't touch much on Ocean or Star magic, I imagine due to spoilers for the seasons we're coming up on.

There's also a tabletop game called Battlecharged which I haven't personally played and I don't think it Adds lore but I've heard it's fun.

Also, it will likely be a long time before we see it, but there's a video game in the works as well that's in alpha testing right now called Project Arcanum. Wonderstorm is pretty busy!

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE

The Free Stuff:

Reflections are official short stories hosted on TDP's website and all of them are excellent and provide little extra scenes. Some of them are quite impactful, and the ones in this second batch are promising an absolutely wild S5. The first batch was released pre S4 and the second batch is being released now pre S5 as we count down to the new season. They aren't Required reading since the most key information from them will be in the show (going by the S4 ones) but I highly HIGHLY rec reading them all. Banger after banger. As of posting this there may be one more coming.

There's also little 4 panel comics called Everyday Xadia that have been also released during countdown mode and they're just fun/cute. Volume One and Volume 2 (still coming out). Sometimes when people say comics they might mean these, or the graphic novels lol.

Little hiatus break thoughts on the graphic novel. Spoilers below cut:

I'm bummed out we have no Smudge/FirePaw interaction from when he runs into him again, but honestly I'm happy it went to Princess

You can really feel the constraint in the book to sort of speed-run through Fire and Ice but my guess is that's on Harper Collins for wanting to condense it

I didn't understand the decision to cut out the battle they had with Riverclan when Fire and Grey were returning with Windclan

Not an original take but the art is very nice I like it

There ain't no way that Barley and Smudge are related please please come on they look like father and son

Good DarkStripe moments I was scouting out for her like a hawk

I said this before but I like DarkStripe's eyelash markings. She needs her estrogen now

I like OneWhisker's design. That's all I gotta say about him because his appearances are very sparse

I might’ve gotten a bit sick and under poor health these past few days too- so, I had to hold off the book haul until today and let me just say — I love these books a little too much. But oh well!

This one was an impulse buy but given I never fully read the series as a kid, I figured why not get it now? Even if it is a graphic novel! It looked cool!

This one felt like a Scooby Doo esque book, and I just got sold by the description in the back. So, another small impulse buy!

I’ve been wanting this book for AGES, and now I finally have it! Who knows, maybe this time I finally finish my Secret Quartet AU (and Project Zero) though to be fair, I have health issues so-

There's also a character who is poly pan, he has both a female and a male love interest, and there's a gay couple who have a son. And there's some het couples too that aren't treated as superior nor horrible because they are het, all the couples are treated just as natural. I hope there'll be some canon a-spec people too.

I'm a repulsed aroace but none of the romances were repulsing to me personally if any other repulsed aros, aces, aroace, or traumatized think it looks interesting but are afraid it'll be too much.

Haven't read it yet either, *goes to book store, they only have it that I'm interested in, feels dumb if I just buy one thing due to social anxiety, goes to another bookstore, they have another book I'm interested in but not it, repeat*. But the author (I do not know about the artist) is bi. I don't know if this'll be presented in the books, but the main character is modelled and named after the author.

The girl main character (the main characters are twins, a girl and a boy) is canonically (although the author didn't specify it before 2022) an aroace lesbian! The first edition of book 1 came out in 2002! The years where most of what a female character was, was dreaming about having a boyfriend! Isn't that just amazing?!

Not read it yet but it's a coming of age story about a gay boy, and while the other kids are figuring out themselves, he already knows and is infuriated by this.

I don't know if there's others, but Seven Seas Entertainment has a monthly survey where you can suggest stories, if enough suggest them they'll hopefully licence it.

TAZ suffering game graphic novel

Hey so I have the Suffering Game pre-ordered and I’m so excited to get it but I’ve been seeing people finding it in the wild early and was wondering if I could ask someone to send me a picture from it. I want the rest to be a surprise, I’m just having a shitty week and really want to see *that* spoiler

So I recently bought Dracula of Transylvania and yes, I read though lots of reviews and scanned the book first bc I’m not about to throw $40 on a book that disrespects the characters (like soooo many adaptations)

And anyway, seemed alright enough! Here’s the cover

I’m only a bit into it. They weren’t kidding with the “retelling” bit bc wooooow, the part of Jonathan just getting into Drac’s carriage to go to the castle is far more dramatic and whumpy here. Spoilers ahead:

While I’m annoyed and confused at some nonsensical changes (why make Jonathan a New Yorker, and other spoilers) I am also curious as to where this book goes since I only just got out of the castle section and it was a wild ride!

But if this book doesn’t go Jonmina I’m gonna be so disappointed. I hate the way so many adaptations ship Mina and Dracula. That ship gives me the ick.

The main “I didn’t like this book” review reason seemed to be that people assumed it was gonna be a graphic novel and it’s not. So if you go by just review stars alone, maybe don’t for this one.
