Steph:"What is it about them? They all seem so..."

Do you think that the people of Gotham are ever just trying to enjoy their day and then see one of the Waynes walk into the cafe they’re at or go to the movies at the same time as them, and think, “Great, my chances of being a part of a hostage situation has just been raised by 20-40%”

2/4 Chapters - 18664 words
Kon whistles at his first glimpse into Tim’s living room, grinning with teeth when Tim reflexively rolls his eyes. “Sweet digs, dude,” he singsongs. “Love what you’ve done to the place.”
“I said,” Tim hisses, even as he slides the balcony door open to let Kon inside, “what are you doing here—”
Kon shrugs, peeling his jacket off. If I left it up to you, buddy, he doesn’t say, I’d see you once in a blue moon. “Couldn’t sleep. Gotta say, the empty Gatorade bottles really give this place personality.”
“Like you’re one to talk. I’ve seen your room,” Tim snipes back. “And I actually need the electrolytes. What’s your excuse?”
or;
on a whim, kon pays tim's gotham apartment a late night visit. and then he visits again.
and again, and again.

Cute
I don't know why I find it so unimaginably endearing whenever Stephanie refers to Bruce as 'boss,' 'bossman' or any variation thereof.

Objectively correct list on which Batfam members would swear
Bruce: no clue if he swears canonically or not outside of miller's all star b&r, but he should not. Look I am very opinionated on this. I do not think Bruce swears. Bruce values control over his own mind so much you know he would not want to do things that would make him look as if he is not in control of himself, even when he is not in control of himself. However, I do imagine that teenage bruce swore, as when Damian cusses Alfred out Alfred is like "Ah, memories" or something. Bruce was an angry teenager.
Damian: Canonically swears and would swear. him meeting the batfam by cussing out alfred is iconic i will not hear a word against it. he can be mean to people without swearing, too, of course. he just has a lot of tools in his arsenal.
babs: look, does Barbara canonically gamer-rage? Not really*. but she deserves it let her swear in anger when people are doing stupid stuff.
dick: I don't think dick is opposed to swearing on principal, but I don't think we have a lot of panels of him doing it in proportion to how long he has been in comics and not done it. I imagine it being more of in the "What the fuck" instances like when something weird or unexpected happens (and only when he's an adult or teenager, b/c as younger robin he was doing the 60s exclamations or whatever that everyone did)
stephanie brown: like dick I don't imagine her being opposed to swearing but I don't see her doing it a ton. I see her doing it more often in anger, since she's got quite a lot of anger locked up pre-Batgirl 2009 and possibly still in batgirl 2009
cass: cass isn't opposed to swearing, but given her propensity for mimicking the speech she sees around her in batgirl 2000, I don't think she'd do it a ton until she sees it on the videos she watches to figure out how 'normal people' talk. then she does do it, though I imagine it's less in anger and more just casually, since i headcanon that cass gets less verbal the more overwhelmed emotionally she is (which... IIRC is supported by canon? She stopped talking at some point in batgirl 2000 when she was on the outs with Bruce if I recall, it's been a bit since i did a read through)
duke: duke is another character I don't see as opposed to swearing, but I don't think he does it out loud on account of his mom clearly not liking it (at least he doesn't do it around his mom, or didn't back before she got joker-ified XD). he does in his internal monologue though sometimes
Tim: Tim canonically censors his own internal monologue IIRC in Robin 1993 you know he does not swear. possibly inspired by whatever cheesy 50s/60s exclamations his icon dick grayson made when he was robin.
*We do see her yelling and saying things she'd regret over comms, but also saying things you regret is like batfam 101 if you don't do it they kick you out.

Finally reading "Under the Red Hood" for my story, Dick Grayson V Gotham and some notes about what exactly happens here:
Jason's helmet really is a whole ass red circle with eyes, isn't it.
There's constant internal monologue about how much Batman cares about his kids. From Alfred and from Batman.
There's a whole ass woman who I have never seen referenced before called Onyx? Who's apparently the "only other hero allowed in the whole of gotham... other than catwoman".
Bruce recognizing Jason just based on how he fights and plans is beautiful, even if bruce doesn't believe it yet.
Superman's over here flirting with Bruce, going "we could have gotten tickets to the theater if you'd called ahead 😘😘" while bruce is traveling all over the world to figure out if his baby boy might be back from the dead.
Lowkey sad that Jason doesn't have the skunk stripe. I know it was fanon that occasionally became canon, but I still like it.
Wow, this Robin!Jason flashback is really giving us good views of the scaly panties, >:P
So, during the flashback, Bruce brings up the idea that Jason has a "mean streak" in comparison to how Dick was. But it's not that Jason was "mean" and Dick "nice"--Dick has a massive temper, even if canon rarely allows him to acknowledge it--but with Dick... Everytime he was Robin, I think he was still in the mindset of "performer". There was a bit more disconnect between him and the criminals of Gotham, because the fights were more like acts. Jason performs too, but he's very personal about it. This is his city, he's taking all these crimes personally and even when he's "performing" it's still Jason Todd, while Dick's Robin is more so a mask. IDK, this is just the vibes I'm picking up.
I really love the panels after Jason blows up the meth lab. The way the colors are... it makes Jason almost look like he's teared up? It's beautiful.
Oh great, Slade's here. No wonder this things so damn long
You know what, Slade? I'm on Black Mask's side here. A nazi and a hyena man? You can find better hired help on Craigslist.
Just finished the fight, and I'm STILL on Black Mask's side. Slade, who the fuck are these losers!?
Yes, Jason baby, kill the nazi!
Jason got them Christmas presents! That's sweet!
Slade, why the FUCK were you here? Did you see Nightwing was in town and go "lol, this'll be funny"?
Black Mask really calling himself Daddy around Jason... wasn't a joke. Huh.
There are some very nice parallels after Jason reveals his identity to Bruce. Bruce was too late to stop Joker's bomb, he was too late to stop the bomb in the meth lab. Bruce was too late to stop his son from getting attacked by a supervillain, but Bruce was faster now, good job! And Bruce never killed his son's killer, and he won't kill Stephanie's killer either. It's like he keeps testing Bruce to see if he really has to go through with his plan with the Joker.
Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if Jason's entire beef with Black Mask was because of his part in Stephanie Brown's death.
...I don't really like the idea of Jason calling himself a zombie after Joker did it.
Jason wiped the smile off his face, goddamn! (And don't think I didn't notice how similar Joker and Jason's laughs are, comic artists. Sure, maybe that's just how cackling laughter was drawn back then, but in literature, that smells like foiling).
...THIS is when Bludhaven gets destroyed!? Really???
Also, what is this depiction of Bludhaven just... being across a river? This feels unreasonably close, why hasn't Gotham just eaten Bludhaven at this point?
IT'S A NUKE???
THEY ARE LOOKING DIRECTLY AT IT, HOW ARE THEIR EYES NOT GETTING BURNT OUT OF THEIR HEADS
I'm just realizing how many explosives there are in this series. Between the bombs the Bats use, and the bombs Jason sets up, and... what happened to bludhaven. That, kids, is what we call a theme!
Bruce really is sympathetic in this. It's subtle, which is good, I don't think anyone would have appreciated the author blaring out "BATMAN IS IN THE RIGHT, HE'S THE BEST GUY, FUCK JASON."
And Jason is getting more and more unhinged as the fight progresses.
You know, it's occurring to me that this all could have been prevented if New Jersey had the death penalty. There's no way Joker could have gotten the insanity plea so many times if they could put him in the ground for good.
...I wonder if Batman votes to reinstate the death penalty?
"But why... why on God's earth--??! Is he still alive!!??" Is just... such a good reveal. Such a good line. No wonder we're all so fixated on this character, omg.
Oh. This is why Jason thinks Batman doesn't love him.
It's the lack of reciprocation. Jason sees "killing the Joker after he killed you" as an act of love. Batman cannot provide that act, so Jason sees that refusal as proof he is unloved.
The funniest Joker's ever been:
Tumblr media
Oh, the batarang moment. Oh no.
Oh no oh no oh no
I still feel like resurrection via Superboy punching the universe hard is still a cop-out reason why Jason's alive, but the line "Until time decided to set things right." is speaking to me.
Oh god, the buried alive scene is brutal.
Okay, so Jason came back fully sane, he definitely knew what he was doing breaking out of the coffin, but his injuries that were unhealed and getting hit by a fucking car are what caused his catatonic state. He didn't just wake up not all there, that happened because no one was looking out for him.
Okay, so 6 months dead, about a... year in a coma. It says a year for his time catatonic on the streets, then a year with Talia, still catatonic... that's three and a half years, Jason really started being the Red Hood... like what, a few weeks after he got tossed in the Pits?
...I thought the pits were green. They look gold in my version of these comics, is that normal?
EW, WHY'D SHE KISS HIM
Also, there was no brainwashing this boy, Talia literally just said "you remain avenged" and it sent Jason on this whole murder spiral, she didn't do shit
Except kiss him. which, EW
Alright, good night everybody!

Stephanie Brown likes to go on luxury brand shopping sprees using Bruce’s credit card at international airports because
1. It’s tax free, so she’s literally saving Bruce money
And 2. By the time Bruce notices she’s using his card she’s on the plane. Which means Bruce can’t contact her because airplane mode, and Stephanie is not paying extra for that in plane WiFi.
By the time Steph lands and comes back to Gotham hours later he’s completely forgotten about the money.

The first thing Stephanie learns about Jazz - even before she learns her name - is that the girl has a Fight Response and she knows how to use it.
Civilians leaning on railings at night doesn't always spell trouble, but it never hurts to check.
She lands quietly, touching down just behind the woman - a redhead, she notes, but clearly not Ivy from the normally colored skin.
Spoiler has always excelled at stealth, so she isn't expecting the woman to whip around and deck her before she gets a chance to announce to her presence.
It's a good punch, she notes as she folds in half, unable to breath.
She's quick to leap back despite her breathless state, hearing the woman gasp as she goes.
"I'm so sorry! Oh crud are you okay? You're just winded - I hope - your breath should come back in a second! ...You probably knew that."
Spoiler holds up a hand. It's a relief when her breath finally returns.
"Nice punch." She says once she can speak instead of literally anything else. The woman just looks more mortified.
"I am so, so sorry! I-"
"Hey, hey it's totally fine! It's my bad for sneaking up on you, really. A city like Gotham, that kind of response is probably for the best. Sorry for the scare."
The woman laughs and shakes her head.
"How about we try this again. What brings a vigilante to my humble building? Should I be worried?"
"No, no, nothing's wrong miss...?"
"Jazz - just Jazz," she smiles.
"Well Miss Just Jazz," she grins, walking over to lean on the railing, "I noticed you up on a roof in the middle of the night during my patrol and thought I'd check in. Sorry again for the scare."
"Oh. Oh! I'm perfectly fine," she waves her arms energetically. "I'm just up here admiring the view."
Spoiler looks pointedly over her shoulder at the dreary skyline, then up to the smoggy, starless sky. She raises a brow.
Jazz just smiles at her and returns to leaning on the railing and gazing out at the world.
"One man's trash," she says.
Spoiler follows her gaze and can't help but wonder what she sees that makes her so happy.
"I better get moving," she says a few minutes later, launching her grappling hook at the next building up. "Have a nice night Miss Just Jazz!"
"Have a nice night Grappling Gal!"
This would be the first meeting of many.
***
The fact that I knew so little about Steph is a tragedy. Her backstory is actually really interesting and I could see her & Jazz bonding over the whole 'villain or really-should-be-considered villains' parents thing (idk much about Steph's mom but I'm planning to read up on it).
Do these two have a ship name yet?
Short DPXDC Prompts #568
While going around her usual nightly patrol, Spoiler finds a red headed lady just chilling on a rooftop.
Something about this woman interested her so she stopped for a moment to say hello.
Apparently the lady’s name was Jazz. She has lived in Gotham for over two years now and can also throw a mean punch (note to self: surprisingly quick reflexes. Do not surprise from behind again.)
Little did Spoiler know but their meet ups would become a nightly occurrence that she looked forward to every day.

Like a lot of people, I am currently in "everyone needs to be real chill and give things a chance" territory over the new title announcements, but I'm going to dip a toe in.
What the new Batgirl title announcement is confirmation of, to me, is that DC internally have agreed again that Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown are separate characters who can be treated separately, and they're proceeding to do that.
How did things end up here? Not to retread well-worn ground over and over, but the two did get conflated together back in the late 2000s between various parts of editorial wanting to remove Cass and Steph from appearing in Bat titles and fans asking to see characters again.
And look, fans supporting each other in explaining to DC editorial that they would like acknowledgement of their favourite characters, and about the streak of misogyny that accompanied their removal, makes sense. But Cass and Steph are separate characters with separate trajectories in storytelling, and I think the way they've become conflated in part of the fandom (and sections of DC's) eyes has been harmful for both.
DC's been a bit each-ways about it, but it's pretty clear that in terms of pitches, writers mostly want to be able to write one character or the other, rather than a double act, and allowing Cass and Steph to appear as separate characters rather than demanding a double act is something the fandom needs to be normal about if they want them used.
Cass' trajectory since Rebirth is reasonably solid, in terms of Detective Comics - Batman and the Outsiders - Batgirls - Spirit World - Batgirl.
She's worked with lots of different groups of characters, she's got her own team affiliations, and as a solo title I think it's got a fair amount of promise; but people are going to need to chill out if there are very few side character and crossover appearances in the first 6 issues. If it's going to develop into a healthy ongoing it needs to be able to do things like have Duke appear for a single issue, and then Tim appear for another issue, and then Xanthe appear for an issue, well spaced out. It should be focused on Cass. It should hopefully let Cass start building her own supporting cast.
Until we see the opening issue it's going to be unclear if the intention here is to spin out of Spirit World or out of Batgirls, but I feel like the more promising trajectory for Cass is if it's coming from Spirit World, in terms of creative direction and new story telling.
So I'm looking forward to seeing what we get. But I also worry for the creative team unless everyone takes a deep breath and decides to enjoy the stories on offer.
