Genuinely, I don’t know how else to get the word out, but I feel like if your home-cooked dinners don’t taste right, you're missing either paprika, sugar, butter, or chicken bouillon.

back when I used to post pics of our chickens more often, cute photoshoots etc, naturally some people would be like "ahh I want to have chickens so bad!! maybe I should get some backyard chickens, it looks so fun..." and I just need to tell you that if you want to raise and keep poultry, you may need the Disgust Tolerance of a farmer. you MAY NEED the disgust tolerance of an old farmer, because you may need to be okay with putting three separate pieces of a chicken into a bag with your (gloved) hand. you MAAAAY need to sew up a chicken's cut open crop because the feed she's eating keeps just falling out of the hole. IT IS POSSIBLE that you might have to look at / touch maggots in a major way in order to treat a chicken with flystrike. And much, much more!

had a couple of reblogs on my last post, mentioning toga being a failed yandere and a bad character as a whole, specifically by @mikeellee @amethystoceandespiser and @kite2013 so this is for you guys.
and, yes, she is. she is both a bad example of a yandere, and a bad character.
when you think of yanderes you think of yuno gasai from mirai nikki or monika from ddlc, or even ayano aishi from yan sim or every single girl in higurashi.
and they're all excellent examples of yanderes.
the term 'yandere' comes from two words: 'yanderu', meaning "to be sick", and 'deredere', meaning "lovestruck". together, it the loose translation would be 'sick with love'.
yuno gasai is the best example of a yandere, encapsulating it in every way possible. she's sick and twisted, ready to sacrifice everything, herself included, just to be with yuki. she acts sweet and caring, but is truly a jealous, overprotective, dangerous girl underneath all that.
one of the first things she says to yuki is that she is willing to give up everything for him.
yanderes are supposed to be obsessed with love, and more specifically, with the target of their love.
love is the only reason they have to keep going.
and toga is not it.
because when she's first introduced, it isn't love that's her driving force. it's admiration. some may say it's a form of love, but it doesn't matter. yandere's are obsessed with romantic love specifically, and toga was not introduced as such.
even if she developed into a yandere after meeting izuku, or perhaps her nature was revealed far later, as was the case with homura from pmmm, it wouldn't matter as we still don't know who she's devoted to.
yeah, she's into izuku, but we don't see that devotion. a real yandere would have abandoned everything just to be with their love, but toga doesn't.
she is not a yandere, but horikoshi presents her in such a way, because they're one of the most popular tropes in Japan, and even in the west. appearing adorable and speaking cutely, and obsessed with blood.
what, are we supposed to assume her 'love' is blood? no, her obsession with blood is as a result of both her quirk, and how she envisions love.
blood is how she expresses her adoration. there's a stark difference in how she wants to see izuku's blood, and how she wants to see overhauls. with izuku, her face is flushed and she's almost shy in the way she says it. but with overhaul, she's full of fury. it isn't about wanting to become closer with him, it's about getting revenge for mangne's death.
so, yeah. terrible example of a yandere.
if i were to write her to be a proper yandere, i'd have her obsess over twice, who canonically had feelings for her. i'd have her destroy everything just for twice.
and i'd have izuku's appearance challenge her. suddenly, she can't tear everyone and everything else down, because she can't hurt him. maybe she'd have a mental breakdown over it, trying to figure out who to fight for, if it's okay to love more than one person, maybe even coming to the conclusion that it was never love - it was obsession.
i'd have her be a proper deconstruction of the yander archetype. not this failed version of a yandere.
as for her character...
her writing is really bad, which doesn't say much when most other characters in mha are badly written, but we're focusing on her today.
we are first introduced to her after the hosu arc, where she joins the lov due to believing stain was working with them.
why did she love stain? what specifically drew him to her? we don't know, and we never find out.
why is she so attracted to izuku? the many injuries he gets? but what was it specifically that caught her attention? no clue.
did she ever love twice back? why did she stick with shigiraki? how close is she to the villains other than twice?
we don't know.
there were so many ways to develop her. maybe she, dabi and spinner would reminisce about how they first found out about stain, which would also further delve into all of their motivations. maybe they would find out stain rejected the lov, and struggle on deciding whether to leave or not.
it'd be far more interesting if she actually wanted to damn everything to join izuku, but maybe he rejected her and so she turned against him.
maybe she could have been a good deconstruction of the yandere trope, maybe she could have been a well-written character, but she wasn't.

Rice was rejected by the Council of Sparty's Innards, so reported to our vet this morning. She's not worried as long as Sparty has an appetite, drinks, pees, and seems relatively chipper, so there's no immediate change of plans other than dropping the rice idea altogether and sticking with very low volumes of a diluted gastrointestinal wet food my sister picked up for me. If she doesn't keep that either or gets worse, we're going in tomorrow evening to consider an x-ray just to rule out foreign objects, but neither of us really feel like that fits the symptoms here.
Also discussed my semi-controversial use of yogurt as a stomach aid and got a thumbs up on that - especially considering she spews bile on a normal day on an empty stomach.

Hi Bones!! Thank you for you hard work on this project and for sharing it with us!
I've seen your posts about weird representation of society (regarding the "natural order of things") in xenofiction, especially in lion king, so I wanted to ask:
could you recommend any xenofiction media that has all (or most of the) animal species sapient? Or is the only solution to make just one or two species sapient while the others (especially prey) are plain animals?
Really sorry if you've seen this ask from me before - my account had a weird laggy period when I couldn't send or receive messages and asks, so I don't know if you got the previous one! I just know that now it's fixed so I double all the asks sent haha
Honestly I'm not totally sure! If any 3rd person has some good recommendations for "every being is alive" xenofiction types, feel free to weigh in.
If you want to jump in with me though, I am following the webcomic Africa. It updates every Wednesday. Africa is about a mother Leopard on the verge of a great ecological disaster, the relationship between her children and the animals around her, and the strength of both instinct and choice as the characters face an uncertain future.
Since it's ongoing, I still don't know how it's going to end and can't judge it as a full work! But it's absolutely fascinating and I think the author is doing a fantastic job so far. Bonus points for the way it portrays humans, btw.
No more spoilers though, if you're interested, it's on Webtoons.
(I'm also planning to read Oren's Forge soon. Ask me about it again in a few months over on Bonebabbles and I'll give you my thoughts)
As an aside though, funny you mention it because like... ever since I was a kid I've had a story I want to tell with the premise. It's a scintilla I've kept close to me for well over a decade but haven't done anything official with. So this is actually a theme I've thought about a lot.
It's rare to see it done well though because like... its very premise butts heads with reality. The "natural order" that an animal follows is not something it moralizes. A tiger doesn't have the capacity to think about how fucked up it is to kill to stay alive, the deer doesn't know that if its population isn't controlled it will destroy the forest.
They're animals. They don't HAVE that agency. Your dog does not care about being sterilized. A snake doesn't differentiate between a pinky and an adult mouse except in terms of if it will fit in its mouth. But the minute you put human morality in there... they have the ability to reason, create and agree on the rules of a society, make choices about MORALITY.
If nothing is going to change about their world, you just end up putting human arguments about "natural order" in their mouths and, well... start telling a parable justifying this "natural order."
(Genuine) Does what I'm saying make sense? Animals DON'T rationalize or negotiate. HUMANS do.
So the minute you're approaching a world with that logic, like it or not, you are invoking those "arguments from nature." And you're putting them in a being that is not fully an animal or a human, but an anthropomorphic mix which CAN rationalize but WON'T make an effort to change their world.
(Which is why tbh the best examples i know of are works with a theme of "change.")
OH WAIT I also remember another that's interesting!! Leafy: Hen into the Wild actually has a fascinating take on it. It's not interested in "moralizing" or really being about an animal society. It's a very emotional sort of movie, and it's about joys in adversity, the freedom that choice gives you, how bad things are going to happen and you can never completely prevent them.
INTENSE movie emotionally, the ending will wreck you (especially in the English translation which leaves out a really important theme making it feel abrupt x_x) but it's really good. Check that one out.
OH and also You Are Umasou. That one has more pitfalls imo (it does try to moralize a bit) but it's super unique as a movie. And is about dinosaurs.

i need to draw this part of mochi more but she is honestly, from an onlookers perspective, very weird. and the reason for it is that she has a habit of collecting and hoarding old, gross, used, useless, or otherwise unwanted things.
as a witch, anything can be used all spell ingredients because objects in the world inherently have properties that can be used for spells (think botw where its like "old snail shell can boost speed" kind of thing), and often times the properties are stronger AFTER said object has been gently to moderately used. an eraser has good properties for glue spells BUT a used and chewed on eraser has STRONGER properties for glue spells
so when she was a little kid, in school you could catch her on the floor scraping up eraser shavings that a kid brushed off his desk. the teacher tries to empty out the pencil shavings bin and mochi ZOOMS in with a jar to catch all of it before it goes into the trash. a kid sticks their gum under the desk and 10 minutes later mochi is on the floor scraping it off and putting it in a little box. and when they were young it really FREAKED lime out, but over time hes like "Whatever, you do you i guess." (shes trying to be a good little witch-to-be and help her mom collect potion ingredients)
as she grows up she gets better at blending in and and uhh NOT doing that, but occasionally you'll still catch her picking up old chewed on pencils, rusty paper clips, soggy pieces of paper, whatever off the floor
