rewatched whisker away again knowing that when this movie came out year ago I did NOT care for it. and I STILL don't care for it. probably in the exact same damn way as the first time I watched it.

the romance just like. Stinks. it's annoying how much it stinks. the character dynamic is bland and route in the way that forced background romance is, but the romance is The Point of this movie. the characters are immature (fine) but the movie takes them so so seriously all the time. there's a big dramatic 'only YOU love her and can save her' bit but this guy is like, a middle schooler.

it's like the romance standards of a ffnet fic but without the deranged, single-minded passion of a teenage girl. paint by numbers romance but painting with the most boring millennial grayscale.

the movie did have good emotional beats-- ms kaoru's cat kinako wanting to become a human to have more time with her kills me-- but it's just... the good beats are all contained to side characters... the emotional climax of the film relies on the weakest emotional beats possible...

this is why the movie eats at me. could've actually worked. or at least been Fun. kill the romance and I could have a good time. but, no. No.
