what do you mean elon musk did a nazi salute on live tv at the united states presidential inauguration twice and is now erasing the evidence off the internet by replacing the footage with the crowd cheering instead?

would be a shame if people reblogged this, wouldn’t it?

I saw something in the news today that truly took my breath away. If you have been paying attention to U.S. politics over the past few days, you’ve most likely seen this woman:
Tumblr media
This is Bishop Mariann Budde, and on Monday (Trump’s inauguration) she led an interfaith prayer for Trump and the incoming administration. During the service she asked him to have mercy for LGBTQ+ Americans and undocumented immigrants. This was badly received by the Trump administration (as expected).
After seeing headlines about this woman, I read something that I wanted to share. In 1998 a man named Matthew Shepard was murdered for being gay. I’m not going to get into the details of his death on this post, but please be warned it is extremely triggering if you do choose to read more on your own. Matthew Shepard’s death caused a lot of change in the U.S. regarding how LGBTQ hate crimes are handled, and laws that were passed to protect LGBTQ+ people.
Now you’re probably wondering what Matthew Shepard has to do with an Episcopal bishop. For years after Matthew Shepard’s murder, his family had held onto his remains, too scared to lay him to rest in fear of his final resting place being vandalized. In 2018, Budde had his remains interred at the National Cathedral, which is also the place where the interfaith prayer for Trump and his administration took place. The impact of this really had an effect on me. Budde could have led a non confrontational prayer service, and chosen not to mention the harm that will come to the people Trump and his administration are going after. Instead she chose to call out hate and fear in front of some of the most powerful people on the planet, and at a place that has such a large historic meaning to the LGBTQ community.
In the next few years there will be many challenges in protecting free speech, standing up against hate, and protecting those in our communities. But I would like to believe that for every Donald Trump and Elon Musk, there are people like Marianne Budde. There are those of us who can’t speak up for themselves, so it’s important for those of us who can to amplify our voices, even if it’s not the ‘popular’ thing to do.
“And he said you should apologize. Will you apologize?
I am not going to apologize for asking for mercy for others.” - Mariann Budde’s response in a Time interview

Bishop asks Trump to show mercy to LGBTQ people and migrants He was simply asked to show mercy toward our marginalized groups of people. Yet being asked to treat vulnerable groups of men, women and children with some small amount of basic human decency made these MAGA Republicans visibly uncomfortable. To be clear, he wasn't asked to support these groups, or even show them a little kindness. He was simply asked to please treat them like human beings — to not single them out and treat them like subhuman "animals," as Trump has called them. There is something deeply and truly wrong with someone who views acting with even just a bare minimum of human decency is asking too much of them — as if things like Honor, Integrity and Compassion are repugnant to their very soul.

There's a saying my dad taught me, that I've found is very true in life:
The antidote to anxiety is action.
If you're like me, you're probably anxious right now. And scared. And quite probably angry. About climate change, about the Palestinian genocide, about Donald fucking Trump.
That only makes sense. It hurts to find out that people aren't as good as you thought, or hoped. It hurts to know how much better we could be doing, and then see all the ways in which we aren't doing that. It hurts to know that people are going to die.
This is something I've been grappling with myself since the US election. I had hopes that were higher than this, and I had reasons for those hopes, but in several spheres, those hopes have been disappointed.
That's not a reason to give up, though. It's not a reason to give up on the world, on yourself, on your life, or on hope.
The antidote to anxiety is action.
(Nobody is allowed to interpret this statement as being about/against psych meds btw. Meds are great and help a lot of people. But this isn't about them.)
Fear and anxiety exist for a reason: to warn us when there is a threat. And to motivate us to do something about that threat.
That's why, the more you push anxiety down down down, the worse it tends to get.
Your brain - your self - is telling you that something is wrong, and that you need to do something about it.
So listen. And find something you can do to help. Anything.
It will make you feel better, I promise. Maybe not right away, but it will.
And the more you do to help, the more you'll see the difference it can make. The more you're surrounded by people who are also helping, who also care. The more you'll see more and more ways to help.
Look up organizations near you - especially organizations that help protect the groups that are most vulnerable right now: undocumented people, immigrants, trans people, BIPOC, queer people, Muslims, Jewish people, disabled people, unhoused people.
Find someone who is helping, and find a way to help them.
The more we do to help each other, the more we organize, the more we resist fascism and work to beat climate change and make those fuckers pay for every. last. fucking. inch...
The more we will change. The more people we will protect and save.
We're stronger together. So find something you can do. And do it.

Cackling wildly as he pulled himself from the smoldering wreckage while those around him watched in horror, Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth reportedly crashed a golf cart into the stage at the presidential inauguration Monday. “Ooooh shiiiiit, what the fuck was that?” said the bewildered former Fox News host, who, after stumbling out of the vehicle and touching his hand to his bleeding forehead, strolled through the Capitol rotunda, took a large swig of whiskey, and then lost his balance while attempting to throw a haymaker at Chief Justice John Roberts. “John! Johnny boy! Justice J! Nice robes—for a girl! Ha ha, am I right? Full Story

On the Elon musk salute
I don’t like him either but if feels like suddenly everyone cares about antisemitism.Americans managed to make Nazi salute about their politics with memes and edits of politicians saluting .
making it a cheap joke is not helping.
Jews worldwide have been experiencing a startling rise in antisemitism and violence.

it's so funny to me that caleb and veth really did just trade off the job of intensely pining for the other at like the halfway point of the campaign. like, imo, nott in the early days did not behave in any real romantic or even romance-adjacent ways toward him--I imagine it would be very hard to even think in that way when you hate what you look like so much, have such low self-esteem, and are actively lying about your entire past, including a secret husband. caleb, on the other hand, is kind of diving directly back into the sort of relationship he had with astrid and eadwulf. very close, very intimate, we-huddled-for-warmth-together-and-oops-it-led-to-something-else sort of thing. he is the one who expresses that he's fine with it if people think he and nott are romantically together when they're talking to keg. nott is the one who pushes back on that. he calls her his life partner. unknowingly, he compares his feelings for nott to nott's feelings for yeza. his behavior only really starts to change after he finds out about veth's husband because suddenly all of that other stuff is rendered inappropriate in retrospect. but even then he compliments her to yeza over dinner in the most awkward of ways, he admits to being jealous, he calls yeza "a lucky man" to have her, he stares at veth and yeza closed bedroom door for far too long, he creates an entire arcane tower with room for her family just so she'll stay with him. in general, his behavior is not, um, totally and completely platonic about it, you know?
like, veth's feelings for caleb are canonical and therefore indisputable in their existence, but caleb in the early days was not that dissimilar to how veth was acting near the end of the campaign. it really paints a picture of "right person, wrong time" in the way things just didn't line up for them. or, as veth would say: "in another world, maybe"

If ICE approaches you tell them you are asserting the right to remain silent and the right to call your attorney if they ask any questions just keep telling them you are asserting those rights. If ICE gets aggressive you cannot get aggressive back, that will give them cause to detain you. imagine:
its january 19th, 2029. the next president will be taking office tomorrow. youve nearly survived trumps second and last presidential term, no matter the struggles, the fears, the new experiences, the peaceful moments, the ups and the downs. youve almost done it.
you open tumblr, and the newest, most spectacular webbedsite holiday is taking place. and your feed is full of this image
Tumblr media
throughout the whole day, this meme is passed around. some are edited with pictures poking fun at the soon-to-not-be president, others with effects of confetti and fireworks. but the most widespread are being continuously made to count down the time live, and one increasingly popular blog has countdown posts scheduled updating to the second.
finally, the next president inauguration comes, and theyre sworn in, and youve done it.
youve made it. no matter how, youve survived. you can breathe. and youre okay.
